Yami Sukehiro is the captain of the infamous Black Bull squad, a Magic Knight group notorious for its misfits and troublemakers.
Despite his slovenly appearance and rough demeanor, he is an exceptionally powerful mage whose Darkness Magic is one of the keys to the Tree of Qliphoth, a spell connecting the human world and the underworld.
He is physically built more like a martial artist than a typical mage and fights as a magic swordsman using a katana imbued with Darkness Magic.
His motto, “Surpass your limits right here, right now,” defines both his own life and his approach to training his subordinates.
Yami usually sports messy hair, stubble, and perpetually sleepy eyes, with a cigarette almost always hanging from his mouth, even in battle.
His sharp gaze led Asta to describe him as having “killer eyes,” and his casual tone and crude language make him look more like a thug than a knight.
He is extremely muscular, able to throw Asta one-handed across long distances and smash stone walls with his bare fists.
Although now a heavy smoker, he did not smoke in his youth and only picked up the habit after a particular, unspecified incident.
He rides his broom in a crouched “delinquent squat” rather than sitting normally, emphasizing his bad-boy, street-fighter image.
He is also constipated and jokingly describes his long toilet sessions as intense battles he must fight alone.
Yami loves gambling but is notably bad at it, often losing so badly that he gets stripped of his belongings.
He makes decisions on the fly, sometimes deciding an entire mission’s direction based purely on his mood or instinct.
Under the rough surface, Yami has excellent people skills when it comes to outcasts and rejects.
He actively recruits those shunned by other squads or by society, giving them a home in the Black Bull and earning deep loyalty in return.
He trusts his subordinates’ potential and pushes them with reckless, often life-threatening “training” that is more like trial by fire.
His iconic phrase, “Surpass your limits right here, right now,” expresses his belief that people only grow when cornered—and he applies this equally to himself.
Despite his seemingly careless attitude, he repeatedly puts his life on the line to save his squad and others.
He is, in practice, a mentor figure to Asta, especially because they both fight with swords and rely on their bodies as much as their magic.
Origins in Hino Country
Yami was born in Hino Country, an isolated island nation far to the east of the Clover Kingdom.
His family were fishermen, and from a young age he accompanied his father out at sea.
He has a younger sister named Ichika; when she committed a grave crime in their homeland, Yami took the blame to protect her.
He fled Hino Country on a fishing boat, which then met with a disaster at sea, leaving him shipwrecked in the Clover Kingdom.
Arriving as a foreigner with different appearance and customs, Yami was treated with prejudice and called an “outsider.”
Unable to return home but too strong-willed to be crushed, he relied on his fists, growing latent magic, and survival instinct to carve out his place.
By the age of 14, even without a grimoire, he had beaten down grown adults and risen to become the leader of a bandit gang.
However, when he failed to protect a woman he had become close to, he faced a painful defeat that shattered his arrogance.
This failure led him to abandon his life as a bandit and start training again in earnest to gain true strength.
At 15, he finally received his grimoire, a pivotal step in his evolution as a Darkness Magic swordsman.
Joining the Magic Knights
News of this powerful foreign mage reached Julius Novachrono, then the captain of the Gray Deer squad.
Intrigued by both his magic and the fact that he was from another land, Julius personally scouted Yami and invited him to join the Magic Knights.
Yami joined the Gray Deer and served under Julius, gradually gaining recognition through his battle achievements.
During this time, he met and trained alongside future key figures such as William Vangeance.
Eventually, Yami was appointed captain of his own squad, the Black Bull.
His unconventional recruitment of problem children and misfits took shape here and earned him the label of an “eccentric Grand Magic Knight.”
Rise as Captain of the Black Bull
The Black Bull quickly gained a reputation as a “worst of the worst” squad that caused the most damage and trouble.
However, under Yami’s harsh but supportive leadership, it also became a powerful and tightly bonded team.
Many Black Bull members owe Yami life-changing debts—he saved them, accepted them, or gave them purpose.
Because of this, they willingly follow even his craziest orders and would risk their lives for him without hesitation.
In popularity polls, Yami consistently ranks extremely high, often taking second place right behind protagonist Asta.
This popularity is reflected in other media: in the PS4 game Black Clover: Quartet Knights, he is effectively treated as a lead character.
Early Black Bull Era
Yami recruited Asta into the Black Bull after seeing his resolve to aim for Wizard King despite having no magic.
He found Asta’s sheer stubbornness entertaining and worthy of investment, calling him “interesting” and taking him in.
His leadership and “limit surpassing” mentality significantly affected the growth of both Asta and Noelle Silva.
He often arrived at critical moments in missions to save his squad by unleashing overwhelming Darkness Magic.
During the Sea Temple arc, facing threats from the Eye of the Midnight Sun, Yami broke through his own limits.
Cornered, he created his signature technique “Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash,” a space-cutting slash that became one of his trump cards.
Julius vs. Licht (Patry)
When Julius Novachrono clashed with Licht (Patry), Yami responded immediately to Marx Francois’s urgent call.
He rushed to the scene but arrived just in time to see Julius protect the citizens and be mortally wounded by Licht.
Julius entrusted the future to Yami, telling him to take care of everything from that point onward.
Yami, who calls Julius “the boss,” deeply respects him and carries this final request heavily.
Elf Reincarnation Incident and the Shadow Palace
When the elves’ reincarnation magic activated, many Clover Kingdom mages had their bodies taken over by elves.
Yami fought against comrades like Marx Francois and Owen who had been possessed.
He joined forces with Jack the Ripper and Finral Roulacase to head toward the royal capital’s palace.
At the palace entrance, they linked up with Nozel Silva and other captains before stepping into the deeper conflict.
In the Shadow Palace, the underworld devil Zagred revealed itself, manipulating the battle behind the scenes.
Yami ended up fighting alongside Sharla, the elf soul possessing Charlotte Roselei’s body.
He discovered that his Darkness Magic was particularly effective against devils, capable of inflicting real physical damage.
With Sharla’s support, he used Mana Zone to unleash “Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: Higan,” a long-range, dimension-cutting strike from afar.
This attack dealt a critical blow to Zagred, exposing its heart and providing a decisive opening for Asta and the others.
Though he did not land the final hit, Yami’s contribution was crucial to defeating the devil.
After the defeat of Zagred, Yami later crashed Asta and Secre Swallowtail’s rigged trial, orchestrated by Damnatio Kira.
He stormed in aboard the Black Bull’s mobile base, the Black Bull Mobile, with his squad and formally welcomed Secre as a Black Bull member by giving her a robe.
Training Period and Captain Battle (Anime Original)
In the anime-original six-month training arc, Yami and the others encountered the anti-devil extremists called Devil Punishers.
It is revealed that he once met the queen of the Heart Kingdom, who stated that Yami had already found the key to his growth.
He took part in a captains-only crystal-stealing team battle, teaming up with Nozel Silva, Jack the Ripper, and Kaiser.
Inside Dorothy Unsworth’s Dream Magic realm, he used “Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: Higan,” accidentally cutting through the dream world and shattering both teams’ crystals, resulting in a draw.
Yami recommended Asta, Secre, Noelle Silva, Finral Roulacase, and Luck Voltia for advanced training under the Spirit Guardians of the Heart Kingdom.
Later, when Magna Swing passionately begged for a chance, Yami also allowed him to join their training.
Battle Against the Spade Kingdom – Dante Zogratis
After the six-month training, the Spade Kingdom’s Dark Triad launched assaults across nations.
Dante Zogratis attacked the Black Bull base, systematically incapacitating its members.
Yami returned in the nick of time just as Asta was about to be killed.
Using his newly honed Mana Zone and stronger Darkness Magic, he erased Dante’s gravity fields and fought him evenly.
He debuted new techniques such as “Dark Cloaked Iai Slash,” using Mana Zone to draw in enemies and cut them in one unstoppable stroke.
Initially, he managed to cut Dante down, but Dante’s Body Magic regenerated him.
When Dante unleashed 80% of his devil’s power, the tides turned sharply against Yami.
Realizing the gap, Yami forced himself to surpass his limits again, concentrating Darkness into the piercing technique “Death Thrust,” which obliterated much of Dante’s body.
Even so, Dante grew even stronger under his devil’s influence, pushing Yami to the brink.
Yami, understanding he could not win alone, admitted that “I can’t win without you, Asta,” which fired Asta up to stand beside him.
Together, Yami’s Darkness Magic and Asta’s Anti-Magic—both connected to the underworld—clashed against Dante in a frenzied, high-speed battle.
Their teamwork, supported by Finral’s spatial support, ended with Asta’s finishing blow, finally defeating Dante.
Exhausted, Yami caught the collapsing Asta and genuinely praised him with a heartfelt “You did good.”
Just as they moved to restrain Dante, a dull impact sounded behind them, heralding disaster.
Zenon Zogratis arrived, sensing Dante’s delay and the magical disturbance.
With Yami drained of magic and stamina, Zenon’s Bone Magic restrained him instantly, leaving him unable to fight back.
Yami’s squad desperately tried to save him, but Zenon casually repelled all attempts.
Asta, having overused his devil powers, could not move, forced to watch as Yami and the unconscious William Vangeance were abducted to the Spade Kingdom.
Yami’s expression as he was taken away—pained but resolute—looked like he was entrusting everything to his comrades.
His kidnapping was critical because his Darkness Magic, along with William’s World Tree Magic, was needed to create the Tree of Qliphoth, opening the gates to the underworld.
Captivity, Rescue, and the Battle Against Lucifero
Yami remained unconscious as a sacrificial component in the Tree of Qliphoth ritual in the Spade Kingdom.
He eventually woke when he heard the voices and determination of his Black Bull squad, remembering his past and smiling despite his condition.
The former vice-captain of the Black Bull, Nacht Faust, had infiltrated the Spade Kingdom and coordinated a large-scale rescue operation.
Captains, Magic Knights, and the Black Bulls mounted an assault and, after fierce battles, succeeded in freeing Yami and William.
Yami’s body was in terrible shape due to the ritual, but Grey and Vanessa Enoteca used their magic to stabilize and restore him.
William Vangeance, deeply indebted to Yami, forged a special sword—the Mistletoe Blade—by pouring all his magic power into it and entrusted it to him.
Armed with this new sword and his restored Darkness Magic, Yami rushed to save Nacht from certain death.
He and Nacht combined their powers in spectacular teamwork, using Darkness and Shadow Magic together.
During the battle with Lucifero, the highest-ranking devil of the underworld, Yami’s strength was acknowledged even by Lucifero himself.
Along with Asta and Yuno Grinberryall, he fought against Lucifero’s full power, showing some of the most intense combat in the series.
Yami and Nacht attempted to finish Lucifero with a coordinated strike, but Lucifero’s arms extended from his back and pierced their torsos, inflicting lethal wounds.
On the brink of death, Yami watched as Asta reached a true Devil Union state and launched a final attack.
Yami used the last of his magic and strength to support Asta’s decisive strike.
After Lucifero was ultimately defeated, both Yami and Nacht were at death’s door, their bodies grievously damaged.
Thanks to Charmy Pappitson’s food restoring Mimosa Vermillion’s magic power, Mimosa healed them completely.
Yami survived and later formally handed his sword over to Asta as a permanent weapon, acknowledging his growth.
Aftermath and Relationship with Charlotte
At Asta’s investiture ceremony following the Spade incident, Yami noticed that Charlotte Roselei had been avoiding him.
Confused by her behavior, he asked about it while she flusteredly kept her distance.
Finral quietly explained to him that Charlotte had actually confessed her feelings to Yami while he was on the verge of death.
Yami, who had never realized she was in love with him, was stunned by this revelation.
Until then, he had interpreted the unusual “energy” he sensed from Charlotte as a kind of visceral dislike.
Knowing it was actually affection, he became visibly shaken, unsure how to respond, marking a rare moment where the unflappable captain was emotionally off balance.
Black Bull Squad
Yami handpicks the Black Bull members based on instinct, interest, and their potential to become strong through hardship.
He does not coddle them and often treats them roughly, but he is fiercely protective and deeply trusts them.
Most members owe Yami great personal debts: he saved them from execution, isolation, or despair.
Because of this, their loyalty is absolute, and they will throw themselves into danger to follow his orders or rescue him.
He is especially important to Asta, who sees him as both a mentor and a goal to surpass.
He encourages Asta to push beyond his limits and fights alongside him in key battles, shaping Asta’s development as a swordsman.
Julius Novachrono
Julius Novachrono, the future Wizard King, is the man who brought Yami into the Magic Knights.
Yami calls him “the boss” and respects him greatly, recognizing that Julius took in a foreign delinquent and gave him a chance.
It was Julius’s faith in Yami that allowed him to escape his bandit past and become a legitimate knight and then a captain.
Yami feels a deep sense of obligation toward Julius and takes his last request—entrusting the future to him—very seriously.
William Vangeance
William Vangeance was Yami’s contemporary in the Gray Deer squad and later another squad captain.
While they are not overtly close in daily life, they share a bond forged from rising through the ranks together.
William felt responsible for the events involving the elves and for the danger Yami faced due to the Tree of Qliphoth.
He risked his own life to forge the Mistletoe Blade for Yami, pouring all of his magic into the sword to help him fight Lucifero.
Charlotte Roselei
Charlotte Roselei is a fellow captain who owes Yami her freedom from a curse he once broke almost casually.
Because of this and his strong presence, she developed romantic feelings for him, though she is extremely shy and tsundere about it.
Yami, being incredibly dense in matters of romance, did not realize her feelings at all.
He interpreted her nervous behavior and unique “energy” as disgust toward him, leading to a string of insensitive comments and misunderstandings.
After the elf incident, they started to get a bit closer, even sharing meals (albeit mainly for work reasons).
However, after the Spade Kingdom battle and her desperate confession while he was near death, Charlotte became too embarrassed to face him and began avoiding him.
Once Finral revealed the truth to Yami, he was deeply shaken, having never considered himself the object of someone else’s affection.
This revelation added a new, awkwardly comedic and heartfelt layer to their relationship.
Fuegoleon Vermillion
Fuegoleon Vermillion is one of the few captains who treats everyone fairly regardless of status, which Yami respects.
They are on good terms, and Yami would visit Fuegoleon while he was in a coma after being attacked by the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
When Yami first fought Licht, Fuegoleon was upset on his behalf, suggesting only a dirty trick could have beaten Yami.
They share a quiet camaraderie as strong, serious captains with different but compatible ideals.
Jack the Ripper
Jack the Ripper often bickers with Yami, and the two seem like constant rivals.
Despite their loud arguments and insults, they recognize each other’s strength and fight with excellent coordination when necessary.
In emergencies, their teamwork is surprisingly smooth, with Jack’s slicing magic and Yami’s darkness combining effectively.
Their love-hate dynamic adds a mischievous, combative flavor to the relationships among the captains.
Nacht Faust
Nacht Faust is the vice-captain of the Black Bull and Yami’s old friend from his rougher days.
Although their personalities are almost opposite, they share a deep mutual understanding born from hard experiences.
In the Spade Kingdom war, Yami and Nacht use combined Shadow and Darkness Magic to create devastating fusion techniques.
Their joint efforts against Lucifero show a high degree of trust, coordination, and shared willingness to risk their lives.
Overall Power and Combat Style
Yami is one of the Clover Kingdom’s strongest mages and a top-tier captain.
His Darkness Magic has a gravitational, absorbing nature and is intrinsically linked to the underworld, making him crucial to the Tree of Qliphoth ritual.
Though Darkness Magic is inherently slow, Yami compensates by combining it with incredible physical strength, katana-based swordsmanship, and Ki sensing.
This transforms him into a magic swordsman whose attacks can sever space, devour magic, and even harm devils.
He uses body reinforcement magic alongside relentless physical training, making his fighting style extremely close-range and high-risk.
Like Asta, he has a combat style that simply would not work without a perfectly honed body and fearless mindset.
His Darkness Magic is extremely effective against Light Magic, making him a natural counter to Licht’s attacks.
Because he can inflict real damage on high-ranking devils, he is classified as an “Underworld-level” mage, an exceptionally rare category.
Darkness Magic
Yami’s Darkness Magic is one of the two pillars necessary to form the Tree of Qliphoth, a connection between the human world and the underworld.
It manipulates a tangible, heavy darkness that can absorb magic, draw in enemies, and cut through space itself when used with his sword.
Key techniques include:
Dark Cocoon
Yami creates a sphere or barrier of darkness around himself or others.
It serves as a defensive shield, blocking and absorbing incoming attacks.
Dark Cloaked Slash (basic)
He coats his katana with darkness and fires a flying slash.
The attack has a pulling effect, drawing in enemy magic and then cutting it apart.
Dark Cloaked Black Blade
Yami extends his sword with a blade of darkness, increasing its reach dramatically.
This also allows him to compensate if his physical blade is broken, creating a full-length dark blade to continue fighting.
Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash
An advanced slash developed in the Sea Temple arc when he pushed beyond his limits for his squad.
The strike cuts not just the target but the space itself, passing through and destroying spatial magic.
Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: Higan
A refined, Mana Zone-enhanced version of Dimension Slash.
With external magical support (notably from Sharla in Charlotte’s body), Yami can cut targets at an enormous distance, slicing through space from far away.
In the anime’s captain team battle, this slash was so strong it cut through Dorothy’s Dream Magic world and affected the real world.
Black Hole
Yami creates small dark voids that absorb enemy spells to neutralize them.
Within about five meters, this can also halt enemy movement by pulling them in.
Black Moon
A Mana Zone–augmented evolution of Black Hole.
He forms a floating sphere like a dark full moon that nullifies enemy magic within a certain area, even canceling Dante’s enhanced gravity magic.
Dark Cloaked Iai Slash
Yami condenses Darkness Magic on his blade using Mana Zone and creates a territory around himself.
Any enemy entering that territory is forcibly drawn in and then instantly cut in a single, unavoidable quick-draw slash.
Death Thrust
Yami compresses Darkness further than ever before on his blade and thrusts forward.
The attack drills through and gouges out a large chunk of whatever it hits—strong enough to tear away most of Dante’s devil-boosted body.
Yami himself joked that he intended it as a thrust, but it turned into a cannon-like blast.
Dark Cloaked Deep Black Blade
A boosted version of Dark Cloaked Black Blade, powered further through combination with Shadow Magic.
It appears in his combo with Nacht, with the darkness and shadow amplifying each other.
Dark Binding of Darkness (Binding Spell)
Yami forms rope-like darkness that wraps around and restrains targets.
In the manga it was interrupted before completion, but the anime depicts him successfully using it.
Combined Magic
Yami has demonstrated powerful combo techniques with other high-level mages.
These joint attacks multiply his destructive capability and scope.
Glutton’s Playground (with Nacht Faust)
A fusion of Darkness and Shadow Magic.
They create a shadow city, dive into it, and generate countless shadowy doubles that attack from all directions.
The synergy between darkness expanding shadows and shadows birthing more darkness creates an infinite amplification loop.
Within this domain, Yami’s dark blade evolves into Dark Cloaked Deep Black Blade, massively increasing his reach and cutting strength.
Dimension Slash: Scorching Light (with Nozel Silva and Fuegoleon Vermillion – movie)
Seen in Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King.
Here, instead of darkness, Yami’s blade is extended by Nozel’s Mercury Magic and Fuegoleon’s Fire Magic.
The elongated magic blade is then swung as a powerful dimension-cutting strike.
It functions like a hybrid of his Dimension Slash and elemental magic amplification.
Swordsmanship
Yami wields a katana, a curved blade from his homeland’s style of swordsmanship.
It is unclear if he was formally trained back in Hino Country or learned on his own, but his skill is clearly at master level.
He uses quick-draw techniques, precise timing, and devastating power, all enhanced by Darkness Magic.
His trademark Dark Cloaked Iai Slash is a pure expression of this—combining classic iaijutsu (draw cut) with Mana Zone and Darkness.
Even without magic, Yami is a fearsome swordsman due to his reflexes, instincts, and raw power.
His style is straightforward, brutal, and efficient, perfectly fitting his personality.
Ki Sensing
Yami uses a sensory technique called Ki, the “breath” or life energy of all things.
By reading Ki, he can predict movements, detect intent, and react to unseen attacks.
This sixth sense lets him react to surprise attacks such as falling rocks or sneak strikes.
Its precision is so high that he can respond to Licht’s Light Magic—attacks close to the speed of light—by sensing the Ki movements beforehand.
Ki is one of the reasons Yami can fight on equal footing with enemies who should be far faster than him on paper.
It also helps him read emotions and states of mind, though he is hilariously clueless when it comes to romantic signals like Charlotte’s.
