Yami Sukehiro is the captain of the infamous Black Bull squad, a Magic Knight group notorious for its misfits and troublemakers.

Despite his slovenly appearance and rough demeanor, he is an exceptionally powerful mage whose Darkness Magic is one of the keys to the Tree of Qliphoth, a spell connecting the human world and the underworld.

He is physically built more like a martial artist than a typical mage and fights as a magic swordsman using a katana imbued with Darkness Magic.

His motto, “Surpass your limits right here, right now,” defines both his own life and his approach to training his subordinates.

Yami usually sports messy hair, stubble, and perpetually sleepy eyes, with a cigarette almost always hanging from his mouth, even in battle.

He fled Hino Country on a fishing boat, which then met with a disaster at sea, leaving him shipwrecked in the Clover Kingdom.

Arriving as a foreigner with different appearance and customs, Yami was treated with prejudice and called an “outsider.”

Unable to return home but too strong-willed to be crushed, he relied on his fists, growing latent magic, and survival instinct to carve out his place.

By the age of 14, even without a grimoire, he had beaten down grown adults and risen to become the leader of a bandit gang.

However, when he failed to protect a woman he had become close to, he faced a painful defeat that shattered his arrogance.

This failure led him to abandon his life as a bandit and start training again in earnest to gain true strength.

In the Shadow Palace, the underworld devil Zagred revealed itself, manipulating the battle behind the scenes.

Yami ended up fighting alongside Sharla, the elf soul possessing Charlotte Roselei’s body.

He discovered that his Darkness Magic was particularly effective against devils, capable of inflicting real physical damage.

With Sharla’s support, he used Mana Zone to unleash “Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: Higan,” a long-range, dimension-cutting strike from afar.

When Dante unleashed 80% of his devil’s power, the tides turned sharply against Yami.

Realizing the gap, Yami forced himself to surpass his limits again, concentrating Darkness into the piercing technique “Death Thrust,” which obliterated much of Dante’s body.

Even so, Dante grew even stronger under his devil’s influence, pushing Yami to the brink.

Yami, understanding he could not win alone, admitted that “I can’t win without you, Asta,” which fired Asta up to stand beside him.

Together, Yami’s Darkness Magic and Asta’s Anti-Magic—both connected to the underworld—clashed against Dante in a frenzied, high-speed battle.

Their teamwork, supported by Finral’s spatial support, ended with Asta’s finishing blow, finally defeating Dante.

Exhausted, Yami caught the collapsing Asta and genuinely praised him with a heartfelt “You did good.”

Just as they moved to restrain Dante, a dull impact sounded behind them, heralding disaster.

Zenon Zogratis arrived, sensing Dante’s delay and the magical disturbance.

With Yami drained of magic and stamina, Zenon’s Bone Magic restrained him instantly, leaving him unable to fight back.

Yami’s squad desperately tried to save him, but Zenon casually repelled all attempts.

Asta, having overused his devil powers, could not move, forced to watch as Yami and the unconscious William Vangeance were abducted to the Spade Kingdom.

Captivity, Rescue, and the Battle Against Lucifero

Yami remained unconscious as a sacrificial component in the Tree of Qliphoth ritual in the Spade Kingdom.

He eventually woke when he heard the voices and determination of his Black Bull squad, remembering his past and smiling despite his condition.

The former vice-captain of the Black Bull, Nacht Faust, had infiltrated the Spade Kingdom and coordinated a large-scale rescue operation.

Captains, Magic Knights, and the Black Bulls mounted an assault and, after fierce battles, succeeded in freeing Yami and William.

Yami’s body was in terrible shape due to the ritual, but Grey and Vanessa Enoteca used their magic to stabilize and restore him.

William Vangeance, deeply indebted to Yami, forged a special sword—the Mistletoe Blade—by pouring all his magic power into it and entrusted it to him.

Armed with this new sword and his restored Darkness Magic, Yami rushed to save Nacht from certain death.

He and Nacht combined their powers in spectacular teamwork, using Darkness and Shadow Magic together.

During the battle with Lucifero, the highest-ranking devil of the underworld, Yami’s strength was acknowledged even by Lucifero himself.

Along with Asta and Yuno Grinberryall, he fought against Lucifero’s full power, showing some of the most intense combat in the series.

Yami and Nacht attempted to finish Lucifero with a coordinated strike, but Lucifero’s arms extended from his back and pierced their torsos, inflicting lethal wounds.

On the brink of death, Yami watched as Asta reached a true Devil Union state and launched a final attack.

Yami used the last of his magic and strength to support Asta’s decisive strike.

After Lucifero was ultimately defeated, both Yami and Nacht were at death’s door, their bodies grievously damaged.

Thanks to Charmy Pappitson’s food restoring Mimosa Vermillion’s magic power, Mimosa healed them completely.

Yami survived and later formally handed his sword over to Asta as a permanent weapon, acknowledging his growth.

Aftermath and Relationship with Charlotte

At Asta’s investiture ceremony following the Spade incident, Yami noticed that Charlotte Roselei had been avoiding him.

Because of this and his strong presence, she developed romantic feelings for him, though she is extremely shy and tsundere about it.

Yami, being incredibly dense in matters of romance, did not realize her feelings at all.

He interpreted her nervous behavior and unique “energy” as disgust toward him, leading to a string of insensitive comments and misunderstandings.

After the elf incident, they started to get a bit closer, even sharing meals (albeit mainly for work reasons).

However, after the Spade Kingdom battle and her desperate confession while he was near death, Charlotte became too embarrassed to face him and began avoiding him.

Once Finral revealed the truth to Yami, he was deeply shaken, having never considered himself the object of someone else’s affection.

In the manga it was interrupted before completion, but the anime depicts him successfully using it.
