Julius Novachrono is the peak of the Clover Kingdom’s magic knights, holding the title of Wizard King.

In terms of military authority, he is on equal footing with the king, and in practice functions as the kingdom’s prime minister and supreme commander because the king rarely takes initiative.

He is widely loved by commoners and lower-class citizens, many of whom openly wish he were king instead of Augustus Kira Clover XIII.

This popularity and moral authority make the actual king deeply jealous of him.

Julius is easygoing, approachable, and almost childlike when it comes to magic.

He is a pure “magic nerd,” whose eyes shine whenever he encounters a rare or innovative spell.

Despite his lighthearted demeanor, he is extremely pragmatic and clear‑headed about what a Wizard King must be.

He teaches Asta and Yuno that the Wizard King is defined not by status, but by overwhelming achievements and power proven in reality.

He believes that human potential is limitless and hates the idea that birth or social class determine one’s worth.

He sees the current society—where nobles are arrogant and commoners give up on themselves—as tragically wasteful.

To change this, Julius worked relentlessly to rack up achievements and rise to the top so he could reshape the system from within.

His goal is a world where people are evaluated fairly regardless of lineage, solely by their actions and contributions.

Before becoming Wizard King, Julius was Captain of the Grey Deer squad (later known as the Grey Deer / Azure Deer depending on era).

He personally scouted Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance, who would both become captains and crucial figures in the story.

Yami was once shunned because of his foreign origin and dark magic, but Julius recognized his talent.

He supported Yami from his early days, acknowledged his results honestly, and eventually promoted him to captain, earning Yami’s deep, if rarely spoken, respect and gratitude.

Julius also encountered Zora Ideale’s father, Zara, the first commoner to become a magic knight.

He was moved by Zara’s attitude and dedication, and this meeting strongly reinforced his resolve to build a merit-based, discrimination‑free system.

In the anime, it is revealed that Zara’s success provoked jealousy among noble squad members, who conspired to murder him.

After Julius became Wizard King, this tragedy pushed him to introduce a formal rank and “star” evaluation system, ensuring all squad members—regardless of status—receive fair assessment and recognition for their achievements.

Because of his integrity, long‑term vision, and willingness to back people from any background, Julius has enormous trust from most captains.

Even wild and unruly figures like Yami and Jack the Ripper ultimately obey his judgments when it truly matters.

Julius not only fights powerful enemies but also actively works to reform the magic knight system.

He seeks to make promotions and rewards merit-based, using stars and ranks to measure a squad’s and an individual’s real performance.

He frequently arranges missions that test the magic knights, develops them, and gives them chances to be recognized.

He also ensures that those who risk their lives—like Asta, Yuno, and many others during the Elf Reincarnation incident—are officially honored and promoted.

During a later half‑year training period (anime original), he supports large-scale training initiatives and morale-boosting events.

He uses these opportunities to strengthen the kingdom before looming threats from other nations like the Spade Kingdom.

Julius is a user of Time Magic, controlling the flow, acceleration, stopping, and reversal of time.

The core of his magic is the ability to take time away from a target, store it, and later use that accumulated time.

The concept is that “stealing time” is equivalent to “stealing the future.”

If he takes decades of time from a person, that person instantly ages by that amount; if he takes all remaining time, the target dies as their remaining life is consumed.

Because the damage he inflicts is in the form of accelerated aging rather than conventional wounds, it cannot be healed in normal ways.

This means each of his offensive spells can be effectively lethal with a single hit.

His grimoire is highly unusual: it has no cover or spine, consisting only of pages that spin freely in the air.

This strange, floating grimoire reflects the fluid, intangible nature of time itself.

Julius bears a sigil on his forehead linked to an ancient magic tool called Swallowtail.

He discovered this relic during one of his incognito wanderings, finding it left behind by an ancient mage.

Swallowtail stores magic power and time little by little over a long period.

Julius used it as a safeguard: if anything happened to him, he could “rewind” his own life using the stored time.

During his battle with Licht (actually the elf Patry, inhabiting William Vangeance’s body), Julius expends all his magic and accumulated time to protect the entire Clover Kingdom.

He is mortally wounded and appears to die, but Swallowtail activates, rewinding his body to that of a boy and allowing him to resurrect in a much younger form.

However, this resurrection comes with heavy consequences.

His grimoire shrinks to a single book and most of his previous power is lost, leaving him convinced he can no longer continue serving as Wizard King in the same way.

Battle with Patry and Saving the Kingdom

While the Royal Knights (Royal Selection Knight Squad) attack the Eye of the Midnight Sun’s hideout, Julius is summoned by William Vangeance.

There he learns that two souls inhabit William’s body: William and Patry (mistakenly called Licht by most humans).

Patry reveals himself and engages Julius in combat.

Julius’s mastery of time and Mana Zone allows him to outclass Patry, even handling ultra-fast Light Magic with precise prediction and counters.

However, Patry shifts tactics and targets the entire population of the Clover Kingdom with a massive spell.

Faced with a choice, Julius uses all the time he has stored and his remaining mana to reverse and negate the attack, saving every citizen.

In doing so, he receives a fatal wound and is publicly believed to have died a hero.

Thanks to Swallowtail, he later returns in a child’s body, but with greatly reduced magical capabilities and only one grimoire remaining.

Support During the Magic Trial

Later, Asta and Secre Swallowtail are put on trial by Damnatio Kira in a “magic court,” where Damnatio seeks to condemn them.

Julius anticipates that Yami and the Black Bulls will crash the trial to rescue their comrades.

To prevent the kingdom from descending into chaos and to legitimize their actions, Julius intervenes indirectly.

Through Fuegoleon Vermillion and Nozel Silva, he orders the Black Bulls—by his direct authority—to investigate devils and curses, turning what would have been rebellion into a sanctioned mission.

Half-Year Training and Reforms (Anime Original)

In the anime‑original six‑month training arc, Julius visits the old workshop where Lemiel Silvamillion Clover once developed ancient magic tools.

He is deeply fascinated by these relics and their potential applications.

He also organizes a crystal‑capture team battle exclusively for squad captains, boosting their competitiveness and morale.

This event, among others, helps strengthen relationships between squads and prepares them for upcoming wars.

At a later investiture ceremony, through Marx Francois, Julius publicly honors those who fought in the Elf Reincarnation incident and in the Shadow Palace.

He announces major promotions for certain members and grants a blanket one‑rank promotion to all knights who were involved, reinforcing his principle of fair evaluation based on contribution.

Confronting the Spade Kingdom Threat and the Devil Within

After Nacht Faust and others infiltrate the Spade Kingdom, a giant demon is sent to attack the Clover Kingdom itself.

Julius asks Damnatio Kira for cooperation, realizing the threat requires extreme measures.

He temporarily advances his own body’s age by ten years, regaining a level of power close to his former prime.

With this regained strength and Time Magic, he attacks the demon and manages to fight it back, but his power runs out before he can completely destroy it, and he reverts to his childlike form.

He then learns that Asta and the others have defeated Lucifero, one of the highest-ranking devils.

Despite this apparent victory, Julius feels an inexplicable sense of dread and unease.

In a conversation with Damnatio, Julius gradually realizes a horrifying truth: he himself is the hidden devil host within the Clover Kingdom and the root cause of many events.

Just as he tries to have Damnatio stop him, the consciousness of Lucius Zogratis—his devil-linked alter ego—awakens and seizes control of his body.

Julius is one of the strongest mages in the series, described by Patry as “the last bastion of the world’s laws.”

His Time Magic, combined with Mana Zone, gives him unmatched control over a battlefield.

That said, his physical abilities are otherwise average compared to other mages.

He cannot wield Asta’s anti‑magic swords due to their nature and weight, showing that his power is purely magical rather than physical.

In combat, Julius prefers to observe, analyze, and then respond with perfectly timed counters.

He often allows opponents to reveal their spells just so he can witness and understand them, reflecting his deep curiosity and confidence.

Time Binding Magic: “Chrono Stasis”

Time Binding Magic: Chrono Stasis is Julius’s fundamental spell category, with multiple derived forms.

Its main function is to stop or manipulate a target’s flow of time.

He can envelop targets in spherical fields where time is reduced to zero, completely freezing them.

By rapidly accelerating time within these spheres, he can even cause targets to age to the point of disappearance.

In the game *Black Clover Quartet Knights*, this base spell has variants such as “Chrono Stasis: Bind (Exousia).”

In the story, almost all of Julius’s offensive and defensive time spells are considered offshoots of this core magic.

“Chrono Stasis: Seizure (Dynamis)”

This variant steals time directly from a target.

Stealing time from a person equates to stealing their future, causing sudden aging or death if all remaining time is taken.

The damage appears as instant aging rather than wounds or illness.

Because this type of damage cannot naturally heal, every strike from this magic is essentially lethal.

The name is given in *Black Clover Quartet Knights*.

“Chrono Stasis: Nether Light (Thanatos)”

This spell releases a penetrating beam that steals time from anything it hits.

It is Julius’s first clearly depicted offensive spell in the series.

He can combine it with binding aspects of Chrono Stasis to freeze targets struck by the beam.

Its name also comes from *Black Clover Quartet Knights*.

“Chrono Stasis: Grasp (Aphesis)”

This spell appears to restore wounds and stamina by manipulating time.

Observers describe it as “rewinding” time, though Julius notes that the actual mechanism is slightly different and more precise.

Functionally, it works as a time-based recovery spell, reverting a target toward their prior condition.

The name again is from *Black Clover Quartet Knights*.

Mana Zone: “Chrono Stasis – Foresight (Grigora)”

Here Julius expands his mana into the surrounding area and accelerates time only within his Mana Zone.

By doing so, he senses moments of the immediate future and reacts before actions fully occur.

With this, he can respond to even the fastest Light Magic, often proclaimed to be the fastest attribute.

He uses this foresight to read and counter attacks with terrifying precision.

“Chrono Stasis: Dominion (Apollyon)”

Julius uses this spell to seize control of enemy magic itself.

He freezes, accelerates, and redirects spells launched at him.

In the story, he combines it with his Foresight to catch and fling back Damnatio’s Judgment of Light swords.

The name is taken from *Black Clover Quartet Knights*.

Time Reversal Magic: “Chrono Anastasis”

Time Reversal Magic: Chrono Anastasis reverses the flow of time on a massive scale.

Julius uses this spell to neutralize and counter a devastating kingdom‑wide spell aimed at all citizens during his battle with Patry.

The range and power are enormous, showing just how much time he had stored in Swallowtail.

It exemplifies his willingness to spend all his accumulated power to protect others.

Transformation Magic

Aside from Time Magic, Julius frequently uses transformation magic to disguise himself.

He loves to wander the royal capital in various forms, especially as elderly men or women, to observe everyday life and discover new magic unnoticed.

These undercover outings are where he encounters many interesting magics and people.

They also allow him to experience the kingdom from the perspective of ordinary citizens, strengthening his resolve to reform it.

Julius’s ideals do not remain abstract; he repeatedly turns them into concrete policies and decisions.

He scouts outsiders like Yami, uplifts commoners like Zara, and later praises and promotes numerous knights regardless of pedigree.

He installs ranking and star systems so even a common-born knight can surpass nobles through sheer performance.

He uses his own status as Wizard King to protect and legitimize people whom the old system would have rejected.

Even after being reborn as a child and losing most of his power, he tries to guide the kingdom strategically.

However, the hidden existence of Lucius within him adds a tragic twist to his life, making him both the greatest protector and, unbeknownst to him, the seed of the greatest threat to the Clover Kingdom.
