Case Closed (Detective Conan) is a legendary Japanese detective manga series by Gosho Aoyama, first published in 1994.

The series follows high school detective Jimmy Kudo, who is transformed into a child after being poisoned by a mysterious criminal syndicate.

Under the alias Conan Edogawa, he solves countless complex cases, all while searching for a way to regain his true form.

With sharp mystery plots, unforgettable characters like Rachel Moore, Harley Hartwell, Ai Haibara, and a huge global fanbase, Case Closed has become a true cultural phenomenon, inspiring TV anime, movies, games, and more.

Case Closed was created by Gosho Aoyama and debuted in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1994.

Aoyama was inspired by classic detective fiction, giving the story a modern twist by combining murder mysteries with an ongoing narrative.

His original intent was a blend of detective science, logic games, and humor, styled for young readers but with layers that appealed to older fans.

Over time, the series became known for its detailed plots and deeply interconnected storylines, with a unique blend of suspense and lighthearted moments.

The story is set in a fictional version of Tokyo, featuring places like Beika Town, Cupido City, and Teitan Elementary.

Landmarks such as the Tropical Land amusement park, Beika Museum, and Haido City Hotel are frequent backdrops for crimes and adventures.

Most names come from references to classic detective stories, like Baker Street (Beika), Poirot (Kissaten Poirot), and Hyde Park (Haido).

Technology in the series evolves with real-world trends: Conan and friends go from using public phones and specialized gadgets to prominently carrying smartphones.

The main story follows Jimmy Kudo, a brilliant and famous high school detective.

One day while visiting an amusement park with his childhood friend Rachel Moore, he observes a suspicious transaction and is attacked by members of the mysterious Black Organization.

Poisoned with experimental drug APTX4869, Jimmy’s body shrinks into that of a child, but his mind remains razor-sharp.

With the help of quirky inventor Hershel Agasa, Jimmy takes the new name Conan Edogawa to hide his identity, fearing retribution from the Organization.

He moves in with Rachel and her bumbling private detective father, Kogoro Mori, using ingenious gadgets and his intellect to solve intricate murders and kidnappings.

Conan’s daily life blends school, friendship, wild adventures, and dangerous run-ins with the Black Organization.

Over time, new allies like Ai Haibara—herself a runaway Organization scientist, now in child form—join the team.

The ongoing story weaves together day-to-day mysteries with an epic battle to uncover the secrets of the Organization and restore Jimmy’s true self.

Notable story arcs include:

  • The Gin & Vodka Arc: Conan’s initial transformation and his early battles with Organization operatives Gin and Vodka.
  • The Vermouth Arc: In-depth infiltration of the Organization by various agents, new faces like Vermouth, and shocking twists about allies and enemies.
  • The Kir Arc: Enter CIA operative Kir, a double agent within the Organization, and intense FBI-Organization showdowns.
  • The Bourbon Arc: Featuring undercover police agent Bourbon (Rei Furuya), deepening the series’ espionage undertones.
  • The Rum Arc: Conan faces off against the Organization’s No. 2, Rum, while tracking the syndicate’s elusive boss, Karasuma Renya.

  • High School Detective: Talented teenagers recognized by the police and media, such as Jimmy Kudo, Harley Hartwell, and Masumi Sera.
  • The Black Organization: The central crime syndicate, whose members use code names based on alcoholic drinks.
  • APTX4869: The experimental poison that shrinks Jimmy and Ai Haibara to childhood. Its “APO” prefix hints at “apoptosis”—programmed cell death.
  • FBI & CIA: American agencies hunting the Organization in Japan. Key figures include Shuichi Akai (FBI) and Kir (CIA).
  • Public Security Bureau (PSB): Japanese secret police specializing in counterterrorism and undercover work. Rei Furuya works here under the code name Bourbon.
  • Detective Boys: The self-styled school club led by Conan and classmate friends Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and George Kojima. They solve cases as a group and aid Conan in field operations.
  • Gadgets: Hershel Agasa invents a slew of gadgets—tranquilizer watch, voice-changing bowtie, turbo-powered skateboard—that Conan uses to outmaneuver criminals and save lives.

Case Closed has a massive media universe:

  • Anime TV Series: Began in 1996 on Yomiuri TV/Nippon TV networks, produced by TMS Entertainment. It's currently the longest-running anime of its kind in Japan.
  • Theatrical Movies: Released annually since 1997 (except 2020). Each film features original mysteries and massive action set pieces.
  • OVAs: Direct-to-video specials featuring extra cases and crossover stories.
  • TV Drama: Live-action adaptations focusing on Jimmy Kudo’s adventures before his transformation.
  • Novels: Original stories and adaptations of anime episodes and films.
  • Games: Releases on consoles (Game Boy, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, Switch), smartphone apps, and even analog card and board games.
  • Spin-off Manga: Notable series include "Detective Conan: The Culprit Hanzawa", "Zero’s Tea Time" (focusing on Rei Furuya), and "Wild Police Story" (about the police academy days).

Creator Gosho Aoyama supervises nearly all media, with creative involvement in character design, plot outlines, and adaptation approvals.

The manga’s serialized structure, filled with long-running plotlines and clever clues, set new standards in the genre.

Aoyama’s stated goal is to keep the series accessible for new readers, so individual cases are often self-contained, but deeper readers discover carefully laid threads linking across hundreds of chapters.

The anime’s opening and ending themes have become pop hits, featuring artists like ZARD, Mai Kuraki, Koshi Inaba, and more.

Iconic openings like "Truth ~A Great Detective of Love~" and "Secret of My Heart" are beloved by fans.

  • 2001: Won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Boys’ Category.
  • Multiple Oricon chart-topping manga volumes.
  • The anime series and films frequently win audience popularity awards.

By 2015, domestic manga sales surpassed 149 million volumes in Japan; by 2023, global sales passed 270 million.

The anime is broadcast in over 40 countries, and manga is translated into more than 25 languages.

Detective Conan has influenced countless artists and reignited global love for “whodunit” mysteries.

The franchise promotes tourism, with the creator’s hometown of Hokuei, Tottori, known as “Conan Town,” featuring themed statues and attractions.

Cultural collaborations include real-life deduction games (Real Escape Game x Detective Conan), stage plays, and regional events across Japan.

Crossover episodes and movies with “Lupin III” brought together two of Japan’s most iconic crime franchises.

Case Closed continues to evolve, consistently ranking among the most beloved detective and shonen manga worldwide.
