Character Setting

Edit

Conan Edogawa is the main character of Case Closed. On the outside, he looks like a first grader, but he is really a high school detective, Jimmy Kudo, whose body was shrunk by a mysterious drug created by a criminal organization. Conan secretly tries to solve tough crimes and catch the organization, while living as a kid and hiding his true identity from everyone around him. With his sharp mind, cool gadgets, and strong sense of justice, Conan faces danger and mysteries every day.

Conan has the appearance of a small boy, usually wearing a red bow tie, blue jacket, and shorts.

He wears glasses, which are not for vision but to help hide his identity and contain special features for investigations.

His weight is 18kg.

Conan has a brilliant mind and a cool, calm attitude, just like he did as Jimmy Kudo.

He tries to act like a regular, cheerful child to fool adults and other kids, but when a crime happens, he becomes serious and focused.

He cares a lot about his friends and wants to keep them safe, even if it means hiding the truth from them.

He is very brave, never afraid to face criminals, and is quick to get angry when people hurt others for selfish reasons.

Sometimes, he shows his emotions quietly, but he can also lose his temper if someone crosses the line.

He enjoys soccer, food, and sometimes acts a bit shy around pretty girls, especially Rachel Moore.

Conan Edogawa is actually Jimmy Kudo, a famous high school detective.

One day, while visiting an amusement park called Tropical Land, he witnessed a suspicious deal by a secret group called the Black Organization.

They forced him to take a mysterious drug (APTX 4869). Instead of killing him, it shrank his body to that of a 7-year-old.

To protect those he cares about, Conan hides his true identity. He moves into the Moore Detective Agency as a family friend and starts living with Rachel Moore and her father, Richard Moore.

His cover story is that his parents are away due to an accident, so he is staying with people near the Moores.

Through Agasa Hershel's help, he enrolls in Teitan Elementary School as a first-grader and leads a group called the Junior Detective League.

Deduction Skills

Conan has incredible detective skills, able to solve complex mysteries that stump adults.

He notices even tiny clues and can figure out who the culprit is, sometimes almost by instinct.

He is a genius when it comes to puzzles, science facts, and police terms, and can even remember things from lots of different fields.

Although very skilled, his father is said to be even smarter.

Physical Skills

Conan is a soccer prodigy.

He makes up for his smaller body with gadgets like Agasa’s Power-Enhancing Shoes.

He can dodge, run, and tackle like an athlete much older and stronger than him.

His agility is top-notch, and in movies, he can do almost superhuman stunts like skateboarding to catch criminals.

Other Talents

Conan is great at acting, often fooling both kids and adults into believing he is truly a regular child.

He can imitate voices using his gadget bow tie.

Despite having perfect pitch, he is terrible at singing and easily stands out for the wrong reasons during music class or karaoke.

Weaknesses

Conan cannot sing well at all and is even more off-key than he realizes.

He is not good at baseball and only plays because his friends want to.

He is terrible at video games and loses to his classmates all the time.

He struggles with regional trivia and dialects, especially things from outside Tokyo, and often needs help from Harley Hartwell.

He is not very good at comforting culprits after a case and rarely tries to make them feel better.

Sometimes, he relies too much on guessing someone’s dominant hand, which in real life doesn’t always work.

Conan has deep feelings for Rachel Moore, but since he is stuck in the body of a child, it’s hard for him to express how he feels.

He wants to return to normal mainly so he can be with Rachel as Jimmy.

When he does briefly regain his true form, he confesses his feelings to her, and eventually, they become a couple.

He is also close to Professor Agasa, Ai Haibara, and other friends who sometimes discover his secret.

Conan can be jealous if anyone seems interested in Rachel and isn’t very skilled at romance.

  • The name "Conan" comes from Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, and "Edogawa" is from the famous Japanese mystery writer Edogawa Ranpo.
  • The character’s signature look was inspired by his own childhood clothes found in his closet after he shrank.
  • Even adults sometimes suspect that Conan and Jimmy are similar, especially because of how he acts and his deduction skills.
  • He is called "The Grim Reaper that walks," since murders happen wherever he goes.
  • His inventions, like the tranquilizer watch and tracking glasses, are from Professor Agasa.
  • In popularity polls, Conan always ranks at the very top, showing just how much fans love him.

"Conan Edogawa... I'm a detective."

"There is always only one truth."

How He Became Conan

Jimmy Kudo, a high school detective, witnesses a crime by a mysterious group called the Black Organization.

They poison him, but instead of dying, he shrinks into a child’s body.

He takes the name Conan Edogawa by picking it from books in his room to hide his real self.

Hiding and Investigating

To avoid putting his friends in danger, Conan goes to live with Richard and Rachel Moore and enrolls in Teitan Elementary School.

He uses amazing gadgets from Hershel Agasa, like a voice-changing bow tie, tracking glasses, and a tranquilizer watch, to solve crimes without revealing who he is.

He leads the Junior Detective League and often helps Richard solve tough cases, usually knocking him out and speaking with Richard’s voice to present the solution.

Chasing the Black Organization

Conan’s main goal is to gather clues about the organization to find an antidote and catch the bad guys.

He keeps his identity a secret from most people, but a few close allies, like Professor Agasa, Harley Hartwell, Ai Haibara, and his parents, know who he is.

Some enemies like Kaitou Kid, Vermouth, and others also discover his secret, while most people just think he is a very smart kid.

Danger and Adventure

Everywhere Conan goes, trouble seems to follow—there are always murders, thefts, or kidnappings nearby.

He is often put in danger, facing criminals with weapons or even being targeted by the organization.

Despite the risks, he always manages to crack the case and save the day.

Gadgets Invented by Professor Agasa

  • Power-Enhancing Soccer Shoes
  • Anywhere Soccer Ball Belt
  • Stretchable Suspenders
  • Lunchbox Fax Machine (used less after cellphones became common)
  • Turbo Engine Skateboard
  • Tranquilizer Watch
  • Voice-Changing Bow Tie
  • Criminal Tracking Glasses

  • Most of Conan’s close friends eventually suspect him or know his real identity.
  • If members of the Black Organization learn who Conan is, it usually spells trouble for them.
  • His detective adventures have turned him into a legendary character all across anime and manga.
