Goten Son is the second son of Goku and Chi-Chi, and the little brother of Gohan Son. Like his brother, he is a half-Saiyan and half-Earthling. Goten Son looks almost exactly like a young Goku, except he doesn’t have a tail. He grew up without ever meeting his father, because Goku died before he was born, but later got to meet him after Goku came back to life. Goten Son is playful, friendly, and very close to his family. He is best friends with Trunks, the son of Vegeta. Amazingly, Goten Son was able to become a Super Saiyan when he was just seven years old. As he grows up, he deals with both the life of a student and being a young fighter.
Goten Son looks a lot like Goku did when he was a child—same hair, face, and cheerful eyes—except Goten Son does not have a Saiyan tail.
He has spiky black hair and warm eyes.
When he gets older, he changes his hairstyle to try to look less like his father, especially during the teen years.
Goten Son is cheerful, innocent, and loving.
He often sticks close to his brother Gohan Son and his mom Chi-Chi, especially since he did not have his father around when he was younger.
He can be a bit childish and loves to play—especially with Trunks.
He sometimes acts a little spoiled and likes to be around his dad after Goku returns.
Even as a teenager, Goten Son likes to have fun and cares about his friends.
Goten Son was born after Goku died during the battle with Cell, so he lived with only his mother and older brother.
He was raised by Chi-Chi and learned some martial arts from her.
Later, Goku was brought back to life, and Goten Son finally met his dad.
He values his family a lot, especially his father and older brother.
His name, “Goten,” means “to understand the sky” and is meant to sound even grander than “Goku.”
Goten Son is called a “super genius” by Goku, since he can become a Super Saiyan at just seven years old.
When he is first introduced, he cannot fly, but he learns to do so quickly with help from Gohan Son.
He learns how to fire energy blasts, including the famous “Kamehameha” (even though he calls it “Kamekame-ha” by mistake at first).
Later on, he learns Fusion with Trunks, allowing them to become the powerful fighter “Gotenks.”
- Goku: Goten Son’s father. At first Goten Son never knew him, but they become close after Goku returns.
- Chi-Chi: His mother. Goten Son listens to her, though sometimes she scolds him just like she does with Goku and Gohan Son.
- Gohan Son: His big brother, who acts like a father figure when Goku is not around. Goten Son looks up to him.
- Trunks: His best friend. The two are the same age, love to play together, and even fuse to become Gotenks.
- Videl: Gohan Son’s wife. Goten Son thinks she is cool and learns to respect her.
- Pan: His niece. He cares about her, especially in Dragon Ball GT.
"Hey, can I become like my big brother too?"
Introduction and Early Life
Goten Son is first seen at age 7.
He is playful and cuddly, usually hanging around Gohan Son and Chi-Chi.
Unlike Gohan Son, who was made to focus on studying, Goten Son gets to grow up more freely.
He starts learning fighting from his mom.
Meeting Goku and Training
On the day of the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goten Son finally meets his father Goku for the first time.
At first, he hides behind Chi-Chi, but soon he bonds with Goku and even cries when it’s time to say goodbye.
Becoming a Super Saiyan
Goten Son shocks everyone when he turns into a Super Saiyan during training with Gohan Son.
He says he doesn’t remember when he first did it.
In the anime, he goes Super Saiyan when he gets frustrated during training with Chi-Chi.
Training with Gohan Son and Making Friends
Goten Son can’t fly at first, but quickly learns how from Gohan Son—along with Videl, who is also learning.
After just one day, Goten Son is able to fly all by himself.
He knows how to shoot energy blasts and shows off his version of the Kamehameha during the tournament.
Goten Son becomes best friends with Trunks, who is just a little older.
They are often seen playing pretend battles together.
Trunks usually acts as the leader, but Goten Son doesn’t mind.
Fusion and Fighting Evil
When Majin Buu shows up, Goten Son and Trunks learn Fusion from Piccolo, combining their strength to become the powerful Gotenks.
With Gotenks’ power, they help fight against Majin Buu.
Teen Years and the Peaceful World
In the peaceful times after the big battles, Goten Son is 17 years old.
He changes his hairstyle to look different from Goku, because people keep mixing them up.
He spends most of his days like any normal teen—hanging out with friends and sometimes going on dates.
He doesn't train as much and even complains about missing a date for a tournament.
He doesn’t get very far in the tournament because he has to face Buu right away.
Dragon Ball GT
In Dragon Ball GT, Goten Son is shown as a fun-loving young man.
He isn’t as serious about training, making Chi-Chi worry.
He still cares for his friends and family and still stays close to Trunks, even as an adult.
Sometimes he’s forgetful and doesn’t notice things, like when Vegeta shaves his mustache.
He almost goes on an adventure to space with Trunks but ends up staying behind when Pan starts the spaceship herself.
He is taken over by Baby in the Baby Saga and has to fight his own brother, Gohan Son.
In Dragon Ball GT, he mainly uses Kamehameha as his special move.
In some games, this version of Goten Son is not always included, but he appears in Dragon Ball Heroes.
In the alternate future where Goku died due to illness, Goten Son was never born, but another version appears in the spin-offs.
Dragon Ball Super
When Gohan Son marries Videl, Goten Son goes to school as well.
His clothes change a bit, with a new color band and wristbands, but otherwise, he looks similar.
He grows a little slower than Gohan Son or Trunks.
Goten Son prefers having fun and isn’t great at studying, just like Goku.
Because Earth is peaceful, Chi-Chi says there is no need for him to fight, so he is told to focus on schoolwork.
But he is still curious and sneaks onto Monaka’s spaceship with Trunks, which causes some trouble.
Afterwards, he understands what he did wrong and learns from his mistake.
He has grown more mature too—he used to think Gohan Son’s superhero costume was cool, but later says it looks silly.
He also tries to be polite, like suggesting bringing boxed sweets as a gift to Beerus and Whis, which makes Goku and Chi-Chi proud.
In the manga version, Goten Son goes to Blue Hall High School, which is away from his mountain home.
He likes listening to music and playing games on his phone, enjoying school life just like any other student.
Even though he is not as serious about studying as Gohan Son, he tries out being a hero himself because he admires heroes just a little bit.
- Goten Son can become a Super Saiyan at a very young age, which makes him unique.
- As a teenager, he changes his hair so people stop confusing him with his father.
- He is often partnered with Trunks for adventures and battles.
- In alternate timelines, Goten Son sometimes appears in different forms, and in some, he may not exist at all.
