Character Setting

Edit

Hestia is one of the main heroines of the light novel series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, the patron goddess of the Hestia Familia, and the protagonist of the mobile game arc Memoria Freese – Aedes Vesta.

She is a childlike-looking but high-ranked Olympian virgin goddess of the hearth who descends to the lower world and becomes the patron of Bell Cranel.

Name: Hestia

Species: Goddess

Gender: Female

Age: Several hundred million years old (ageless goddess)

Height: About 140 cm

Affiliation: Hestia Familia

Occupation: Familia head (main god)

Role in series: Main heroine, Bell Cranel’s patron goddess

Other divine title / alias: Vesta (“ever-burning holy fire”)

Voice actor (anime): Inori Minase

Hestia is the goddess of the hearth and eternal flame, one of the Three Virgin Goddesses of Olympus in the DanMachi setting.

Despite her tiny physique and casual behavior, her divine rank is extremely high, and in heaven she was once chosen for the prestigious position among the Twelve Olympians, which she later declined.

In the city of Orario, she is a relatively recent arrival from the heavens, descending around the time Bell’s grandfather died.

She founds the Hestia Familia, initially a one-man, tiny exploration Familia with Bell Cranel as her first and only follower.

Under her other name Vesta, she represents the concept of the “ever-burning holy flame”, and the game event Aedes Vesta explores this aspect in depth.

Hestia has the looks of a petite teenage girl rather than an adult woman, leading others to see her more as a “beautiful girl” than a classic beauty.

She has long black hair tied into twin-tails, each fastened with bell-shaped hair ornaments.

Those hair ornaments are a precious gift from Bell, given shortly after the founding of the Hestia Familia.

Her twin-tails can be moved at will like prehensile tendrils, an odd but very Hestia-like trait.

Her most famous feature is her large bust combined with her short stature, creating the “loli big-breasts” impression that other gods tease relentlessly.

In-universe, her bust size is top-class even among the female cast, rivaling figures like Freya and Demeter.

Hestia wears a white, halter-neck mini dress with a large opening at the chest.

A blue ribbon is tied from her left upper arm, under her breasts, and wrapped around her torso – this is the infamous “string” that became a real-world meme.

The outfit is very revealing, yet she insists on wearing it regardless of the weather, to the exasperation of those around her.

Because of her small frame, huge chest, and childish behavior, gods mockingly call her the “loli goddess” or “loli big-breasts,” though the text itself notes she is more “girl” than “little child.”

Hestia is a classic “boku-girl”, using “boku” (a typically boyish pronoun) as her first-person pronoun.

She addresses children in the lower world as “-kun,” treating them with casual fondness.

As a goddess, she is known as the Goddess of Protection and Affection and ranks among the most virtuous deities.

She treats everyone equally, without discrimination or prejudice, earning strong respect and affection from many gods and mortals.

Hestia is extremely kind, straightforward, and free of guile.

She shows compassion not only to her own children and strangers, but even to monsters that do not deserve immediate hatred, and she never forgives clearly unjust acts—even by other gods.

At the same time, she is a lazy, spoiled, and somewhat useless “trash goddess” in everyday life.

She likes to slack off, has poor life skills, and is far from a dignified administrator, so people around her rarely treat her with solemn respect.

She is terrible with money, prone to impulsive spending, and completely willing to drown herself in debt for the sake of her children.

As a result, she works multiple part-time jobs—primarily at the Jagamaru-kun food stand and Hephaistos’s weapon shop—with only two days off per month, to repay a massive 200 million valis debt.

Hestia is bad at political maneuvering or divine-level mind games, suffering whenever godly negotiations get complicated.

Yet she often shifts from childish jealousy or flustered antics into moments of calm, mature insight, reminding others that she is still an ancient, high-ranking goddess.

As head of the Hestia Familia, Hestia follows a clear principle: she respects and supports her children’s own will first.

She does everything she can to help them, sometimes at great personal cost, and this makes her deeply trusted by her followers.

She has an exceptional eye for people and uncanny luck in recruiting.

Her Familia members are all fundamentally good people and tend to possess rare skills or magic, enabling the Hestia Familia to rise from nothing to a top-tier faction in less than a year.

Because every member is unusually gifted, other gods sometimes envy or resent Hestia.

Nevertheless, even those gods acknowledge her broad-hearted leadership and talent for guiding adventurers.

Many characters and even gods remark that Bell Cranel would never have achieved his current greatness if Hestia had not been his patron goddess.

However, Hestia is still disorganized, impulsive, and prone to blunders, causing frequent trouble that her children must help fix.

She lacks any aura of stern authority, so even after her Familia becomes one of Orario’s top groups, many gods still treat her lightly.

In heaven, Hestia famously rejected every confession from male gods.

Her fellow goddesses even called her an “impregnable fortress,” but not because her role as a virgin goddess forbade romance—instead, all the gods who courted her were simply unreliable or unappealing in her eyes.

After descending and meeting Bell Cranel, her stance on love changes abruptly.

Within less than half a month, she falls for him and becomes extremely proactive: hugging him often, sneaking into his bed to sleep beside him, and openly declaring her feelings.

Her passion sometimes carries her into behavior that feels rather un-virgin-like for a goddess of chastity.

She dreams of mutual romantic love with Bell, transcending the barrier between god and human.

Hestia is extremely jealous and possessive.

She stays constantly on alert regarding Bell’s relationships with women—especially his crush Ais Wallenstein and the many girls who fall for him.

Because Bell is both very popular and very dense about romance, Hestia suffers continuous anxiety and frustration.

Even so, she rarely becomes truly cruel toward the other girls; her jealousy is hot-headed but not malicious.

Hestia presides over the “protecting flame,” also called the “eternal holy fire” or “undying flame.”

Unlike the weapons-forging fire of Hephaistos or the intoxicating wine of Soma, her authority rarely has obvious, flashy uses in the lower world, leading her to feel it is somewhat “plain.”

As one of the Three Virgin Goddesses of Olympus, she possesses some of the highest anti-temptation authority in existence.

She is one of the few beings capable of resisting the Charm of Freya, the goddess of beauty whose presence can enslave both mortals and gods.

Freya herself speculates that only Hestia and the other two Olympian virgin goddesses could stand against her Charm.

Because of this, the gods have granted Hestia a special exception: in emergencies involving Freya, she is allowed unrestricted use of her divine authority in the lower world.

Godflame Authority: “Pseudo-Sanctum of the Hearth-God”

Technique name: Pseudo-Sanctum of the Hearth-God (Dios Aedes Vesta)

Using prepared altars and specially treated firewood infused with her divine blood, Hestia can summon a replica of her heavenly temple and manifest powerful purifying flames.

These flames possess magical power rivaling Freya’s own.

Their area of effect can cover the entire city of Orario, allowing Hestia to burn away mass enchantments or distortions affecting the populace.

She uses this authority at full scale during the “box garden” incident to cleanse Orario of Freya’s all-encompassing Charm.

Bell Cranel is Hestia’s first follower and her most precious person.

She finds him wandering the city after being rejected by multiple exploration-type Familia due to his weak appearance.

Moved by his earnestness and kindness, she invites him into her newly formed Familia, giving him a home and purpose.

From that moment, the Hestia Familia—eventually a force that changes the world—begins.

Hestia and Bell share similar gentle and straightforward personalities, making them highly compatible.

Their bond is built on trust: Bell trusts Hestia as his guiding god, while she wishes to stand by him not only as a patron but as a woman he can love.

At the same time, Bell has an extraordinary growth rate and is constantly drawn into crises and conflicts.

Hestia is proud of his achievements but also spends many sleepless nights worrying about his safety.

She pushes herself into massive debt and exhausting double work just to provide him with a custom divine weapon, the Hestia Knife created by Hephaistos.

In volume 8, she even tells Bell not to be afraid of loving a god, misreading his reaction and believing her feelings have already been understood.

Allies, Friends, and Familia Members

Ais Wallenstein

Ais is Bell’s crush and thus the biggest “rival in love” in Hestia’s mind.

Hestia refuses to even say her name properly, calling her “that Valen-whatshername,” yet she acknowledges Ais’s character and never truly mistreats her.

Outside of competing for Bell’s heart, author comments suggest that Hestia and Ais would get along quite well.

Ais initially thinks of Hestia simply as “the Jagamaru-kun goddess.”

Liliruca Arde

Lili is the second member of the Hestia Familia, originally a supporter from the Soma Familia.

Hestia calls her “Supporter-kun” and often clashes with her, since both like Bell and Lili constantly nags Hestia about finances and tactical prudence.

Despite frequent arguments and hair-pulling fights, their relationship is fundamentally good.

Lili acts as Bell’s watchdog, protecting him from being exploited, a role Hestia deeply values.

Welf Crozzo

The third member, formerly a smith of the Hephaistos Familia.

Welf is a reliable big-brother figure, and Hestia depends on him to anchor the Familia with his craftsmanship and level-headed personality.

Mikoto Yamato

Fourth member, originally a warrior of the Takemikazuchi Familia.

She temporarily transfers under contract, promising to return after a year, but Hestia truly treats her as family and respects her unwavering sense of duty.

Haruhime Sanjouno

Fifth member, once a courtesan and mage of the Ishtar Familia.

Haruhime’s gentle nature makes her easy for Hestia to befriend, and they often guard the home together, chatting peacefully.

Nevertheless, Haruhime is shyly lecherous and very much in love with Bell.

Hestia keeps an eye on her to ensure Bell does not get dragged into “indecent” situations.

Ryuu Lion

Sixth member, formerly a waitress at the pub Hostess of Fertility and ex-adventurer of the Astrea Familia.

Long before formal recruitment, Ryuu repeatedly risked herself to aid the Hestia Familia, earning Hestia’s deep trust.

Hestia calls her “Elf-kun” and sees her as a powerful and principled ally.

Of course, Ryuu is also another woman in love with Bell, so she is watched carefully on that front as well.

Nina Tulle

A student from the roaming academy “Academy District” who admires Bell and hopes to join the Hestia Familia.

Nina is a rare healer with a powerful support magic, making her extremely valuable.

Hestia reluctantly accepts her as an intern (faction trainee), torn between not wanting more girls around Bell and recognizing Nina’s perfect fit with the Familia.

After learning just how strong Nina’s magic is, Hestia wants her to officially join as soon as possible.

Eina Tulle

Guild advisor to Bell and Nina’s older sister.

Hestia appreciates Eina for supporting Bell from his first days as an adventurer but also sees her as a romantic rival.

Ironically, the two get along so well that they once drank together and passionately discussed everything they love about Bell.

Hestia affectionately refers to her as “Advisor-kun.”

Other Friendly Gods

Miach

A good-natured god of a small, poor Familia.

He helped Hestia a great deal when she first came to Orario, and their similar “kind but broke” status makes them natural drinking buddies and allies.

Their Familia children also cooperate well, exploring the dungeon together on occasion.

Takemikazuchi

God of another small, poverty-stricken Familia and Mikoto’s former patron.

Their outlooks are similar, and their children are close, so their relationship is cordial and cooperative.

Both he and Hestia work at the Jagamaru-kun stand, sometimes competing for sales.

Hephaistos

An Olympian goddess and Bell’s smith Welf’s former patron.

Hephaistos is one of Hestia’s oldest divine friends, and Hestia was one of the few gods who treated her as normal despite the scarred eye she hid behind an eyepatch.

After descending, Hestia freeloaded at her place until Hephaistos finally kicked her out for laziness.

Hestia now owes her 200 million valis and is obligated to work at Hephaistos’s shop until the debt is repaid.

Hermes

An Olympian trickster god closely tied to Bell’s foster grandfather.

He is both a source of trouble and vital aid, constantly nudging Bell toward growth through dangerous situations.

Hestia is exasperated by his meddling but still relies on him at crucial moments.

Miach, Takemikazuchi, and the “goddess alliance”

During the faction war against Freya, many small and mid-tier Familia led by kind gods flock to Hestia’s side, forming a massive coalition.

A loose “goddess alliance” of deities who resent Freya’s whims also supports Hestia as a symbolic leader of a more humane divine order.

Rival Gods and Complicated Figures

Apollo

An Olympian god who once repeatedly proposed to Hestia in heaven after falling in love with her “eternal flame.”

In Orario, he aggressively tries to steal Bell via a War Game, earning Hestia’s deep dislike.

Hestia describes him as a “pervert with far too broad a target range,” since he likes both boys and girls.

Even so, Apollo does genuinely respect Hestia’s personality, not just her looks.

Loki

One of Hestia’s oldest frenemy gods and a head of a top Familia.

Loki constantly teases Hestia about her chest and mocks her, often leading to literal fistfights when they meet.

Despite the bickering, they understand each other well.

Loki admits Hestia’s kindness and eye for talent, while Hestia knows Loki is fundamentally trustworthy beneath her mischief.

Freya / Syr Flover

Freya is the goddess of beauty, and Syr Flover is the human persona she uses.

Both share a deep connection with Bell, mirroring Hestia’s role: both are child-loving, lonely goddesses who quietly support the same boy.

Hestia is intimidated by Freya’s capricious and sensual nature but recognizes their similarities.

After the faction war, Freya is forced to remain in Orario only as Syr, her divine self “subordinated” to Hestia as a vassal goddess for supervision.

Hestia still calls her “Syr-whatshername-kun,” half out of teasing and half due to lingering jealousy, as Syr continues to dote on Bell.

Bete Loga

The only lower-world child Hestia openly says she “dislikes.”

Bete once mocked Bell so harshly that it drove him to reckless overexertion, and Hestia has never forgiven that wound, even while acknowledging it helped Bell grow.

Uranus

The guild’s chief god, who secretly seeks coexistence between humans and certain intelligent monsters.

Hestia is shocked but intrigued by his grand vision and becomes one of the few gods to share his secret dealings regarding the Xenos.

Before the Main Story: Life After Descent

After descending from heaven, Hestia heads straight to Orario.

She initially freeloads at Hephaistos’s home, postponing the formation of her own Familia until Hephaistos loses patience and kicks her out.

Lacking funds and housing, Hestia is given access to an abandoned church, where she lives in a hidden underground chamber.

She begins working at the Jagamaru-kun food stall, though she initially keeps blowing up the shop by mishandling the ignition device.

She repeatedly fails to recruit any children, having no base, reputation, or money.

She also lacks common sense about how to found an exploration Familia properly, which normally is established outside Orario before entering the city.

Meeting Bell Cranel

One day, after more than fifty recruitment failures, she spots a lonely-looking white-haired boy wandering Orario.

This boy is Bell Cranel, repeatedly rejected by all exploration Familia because he appears weak.

Moved by his predicament and charmed by his sincerity, Hestia offers him a place in her Familia.

He accepts enthusiastically, and she finally gains her first child, founding the Hestia Familia.

Their meeting becomes the starting point of a chain of events that will transform the city and the world.

Birth of the Skill “Argonaut of Devotion” (Realis Fraysē)

After Bell survives a Minotaur encounter in the fifth floor thanks to Ais Wallenstein, he develops an intense admiration and romantic longing for her.

Hestia updates his status and discovers a rare growth-boosting skill has appeared in his Falna, translated as “Realis Fraysē”, often rendered as “Single-minded Devotion” or “Argonaut of Devotion.”

This skill drastically accelerates Bell’s growth when he remembers his admiration and goals, leading to near-unprecedented level-up speeds.

Fearing such a skill would turn Bell into a toy for bored gods, and driven by jealousy toward Ais, Hestia decides not to tell Bell about its existence.

She worries that rapid growth could corrupt Bell’s personality.

Ultimately, she chooses to trust his heart and support his ambitions anyway.

Creating the Hestia Knife

Desiring to support Bell more directly, Hestia begs Hephaistos to forge a personal weapon for him.

Hephaistos initially refuses: her forged blades are the best in the lower world, and she already does too much for Hestia.

Hestia does not give up and spends two full days kneeling and begging in Hephaistos’s workshop.

Finally, Hephaistos relents and crafts the Hestia Knife, a divine blade that grows with Bell’s status.

The price is steep: a 200 million valis debt and an obligation for Hestia to work essentially unpaid at Hephaistos’s shop until it is repaid.

Hestia accepts this without hesitation, valuing Bell’s future above her convenience.

Monsterphilia: Trust and Trial

During the monster show Monsterphilia, Freya secretly causes a Silverback to rampage to test Bell.

Hestia and Bell are targeted, chased through the slum district Daedalus Street.

Hestia decides that running will resolve nothing and hands Bell the newly completed Hestia Knife.

She declares, “I believe in you more than anyone or anything,” and urges him to trust the goddess who trusts him.

Bell rises to the challenge and defeats the Silverback, dazzling the city with his victory.

This moment cements the mutual trust that defines their relationship.

First Denatus and Bell’s Nickname “Little Rookie”

When Bell reaches Level 2 after defeating the one-horned Minotaur, Hestia gains the right to attend the gods’ meeting Denatus.

Newly promoted adventurers are given divine nicknames there, usually silly for newcomers as a form of hazing.

Hestia fears the other gods will saddle Bell with a humiliating title.

Thanks in part to Freya’s intervention, they settle on “Little Rookie”, a simple, respectable nickname that leaves Bell mildly disappointed but Hestia very relieved.

Middle Floors Incident and the Black Goliath

Bell’s party is accidentally targeted with a monster parade by the Takemikazuchi Familia, causing them to become lost in the middle floors.

Hestia, sensing trouble when they fail to return, organizes a rescue party and insists on going herself despite the taboo against gods entering the dungeon.

Suppressing her divinity, she descends to the safe 18th floor, Rivira – the Under Resort, where she reunites with Bell’s group.

A brawl with jealous adventurers leads to her briefly releasing divine pressure to stop the fight, which in turn triggers a dungeon frenzy and the birth of the Black Goliath.

Bell and allies battle the Black Goliath, combining magic, magic swords, and ultimately Bell’s “heroic blow” to defeat it.

Hestia witnesses this “heroic strike” firsthand, both terrified and proud of her child’s rapidly escalating feats.

War Game Against Apollo

After returning, Bell’s sudden fame draws the attention of Apollo, who demands Bell’s transfer to his Familia.

Hestia rejects him, leading to escalating harassment and an official War Game challenge with Bell as the prize.

Hestia works to strengthen her forces, personally rescuing Liliruca from the Soma Familia’s clutches.

She then recruits Lili, Welf, and Mikoto into the Hestia Familia as permanent members.

In the War Game, the small Hestia Familia outmaneuvers and overcomes Apollo’s larger forces, culminating in Bell defeating their captain Hyacinthus.

Hestia wins and imposes harsh terms: Apollo’s Familia is dissolved, all assets seized, and Apollo is exiled from Orario.

Pleasure Quarter Incident and Haruhime

Moving into Apollo’s confiscated mansion, the Hearth Mansion, Hestia barely has time to enjoy her new home before Bell and Mikoto are entangled with the powerful Ishtar Familia in the Pleasure Quarter.

Freya’s intervention leads to a war in the red-light district, ending in the total destruction of the Ishtar Familia.

Hestia’s own Familia survives without major casualties.

Afterward, she welcomes Haruhime Sanjouno, a rescued former courtesan mage, as the fifth member of the Hestia Familia.

Xenos: Wiene and the Monster Coexistence Dilemma

Bell and his party bring home Wiene, a girl-shaped, intelligent monster from the middle floors.

Hestia is startled but chooses to accept Wiene, trying to hide her existence in the base.

When Wiene is spotted by citizens, an uproar looms.

Guild god Uranus intervenes secretly, and Hestia is invited to learn the truth about the Xenos, monsters with human minds trying to survive between dungeon and surface.

Uranus explains his long quest to ensure a future for these beings.

Hestia cannot fully agree or disagree but empathizes, having accepted Wiene as part of Bell’s story.

Ultimately, they escort Wiene to the Xenos’ hidden village on the 20th floor.

After their tearful farewell, Bell asks Hestia what the dungeon truly is, and she can only reply: “The dungeon… is the dungeon,” expressing her own confusion.

Xenos Rampage, Bell’s Infamy, and “Heroic Return”

The Xenos are manipulated into a rampage on the surface by the Ikeros Familia.

Uranus secretly drafts Bell into the force meant to stop them, hoping to see whether Bell can reconcile his ideals with reality.

At the same time, Hestia and Lili investigate the Ikeros Familia’s trail in Daedalus Street.

They encounter Wiene, injured and frenzied, Bell, and the Loki Familia all at once, plunging the slums into chaos.

Through Bell’s desperate efforts and Fels’s resurrection magic, Wiene survives.

However, Bell is labeled as a traitor who endangered the city for selfish reasons, tarnishing the Hestia Familia’s reputation.

Later, a return operation is planned to send stranded Xenos back to the dungeon.

Hestia assists by guiding them through the hidden Artificial Labyrinth Knossos using Hermes’s documents.

Realizing Hermes’s manuscript is a water-resistant fake, Hestia deduces he is plotting something.

While Bell is drawn into a staged Xenos confrontation meant to “redeem” him publicly, the plan derails when Asterius arrives and challenges Bell to a duel.

Their brutal one-on-one battle captures the hearts of everyone watching.

Public sentiment shifts, Bell’s stigma is wiped away, and Hestia witnesses what the gods call a “Heroic Return”, where a hero regains favor through overwhelming struggle.

Though Bell loses to Asterius, the Xenos are returned safely, and the Hestia Familia’s name is cleared.

Later, when Hermes comes to apologize, Hestia greets him with a flying dropkick to the face before eventually accepting his remorse.

Second Denatus and New Nicknames

After these events, Hestia attends Denatus again.

This time, both Bell (now Level 4) and Welf (Level 2) get new nicknames.

Welf’s nickname is quickly decided as “Ignis” / “He-who-never-cools”, referencing his declaration that “the iron forged by you will not cool so easily.”

Bell’s nickname is hotly debated due to his incredible exploits and rapid growth, but eventually they choose “Rabbit Foot”, alluding to his white hair, quickness, and rabbit-like motif.

Jealous gods try to push joke names, but Hestia and Freya’s presence ensures a proper title.

First Expedition and the Deep Floors Ordeal

When the Hestia Familia’s rank reaches D, the guild forces them to undertake a mandatory expedition to the lower floors.

They form a coalition with Miach and Takemikazuchi Familia, plus ally Aisha Belka.

Hestia remains on the surface but receives word that a series of horrific incidents have occurred:

a strengthened Moss Huge, a terrifying Worm Whale, and above all, a monstrous Juggernaut that drags Bell and Ryuu into the deep floors.

When they finally return alive, maimed but triumphant, Hestia hears that they survived the dungeon’s worst danger zone, the Deep Floors.

The shock is so great that she literally faints.

Updating their status later, she discovers that Bell, Lili, and Haruhime are all ready to level up.

However, she delays Bell and especially Haruhime’s promotions, concerned about pace and experience.

Goddess Festival and Syr

During Orario’s autumn Goddess Festival, Bell plans a date with Syr Flover.

Hestia, burning with jealousy, attempts to tail them but is conscripted to help in the busy Hostess of Fertility and promptly proves useless.

Eventually she is dismissed as a “non-asset” and sneaks out, teaming up with Ais Wallenstein to chase after Bell and Syr.

Their search is repeatedly thwarted by chaos stirred up by Freya’s Familia.

The following day, Bell still has not returned, and Hestia breaks down in tears before mobilizing help from Hermes and others.

They finally find Bell being pursued by Freya’s elite, and Hestia comes face-to-face with Syr.

Despite her divine sight, Hestia cannot pierce Syr’s disguise to see her true identity, which terrifies her.

Freya’s Box Garden and Hestia’s “Holy Fire” Counterattack

Hestia confronts Freya, correctly suspecting Syr is her human persona.

Freya openly demands Bell’s conversion; Hestia refuses, but Freya’s Familia overwhelms the Hestia Familia and captures Bell.

Freya insists Bell has always been hers and uses Charm to rewrite the memories of everyone in Orario:

in the “box garden” she creates, Bell is remembered as a member of the Freya Familia from the beginning.

Hestia, following Hermes’s prior instruction, had already raised her divinity to maximum to resist Freya’s Charm.

Thus, she alone retains her memory, as does Uranus by his own means.

In this altered world, Bell visits the Hestia Familia mansion, but the Familia members—memories changed—reject him.

Hestia, watched by Ottar and others, painfully pretends not to know Bell to keep him safe.

She then meets Uranus in secret, using coded language only Olympian gods understand to discuss countermeasures.

Meanwhile, Bell’s continued resistance and Freya’s growing doubts begin to crack the box garden.

Hermes instructs Hestia: use her divine blood on firewood distributed across the city as “altars.”

With this network prepared, Hestia climbs Babel Tower and invokes Pseudo-Sanctum of the Hearth-God (Dios Aedes Vesta).

She descends in radiant glory, summoning a phantom of her heavenly temple and unleashing purifying flames over the entire city.

These flames burn away Freya’s Charm, restoring everyone’s memories and shattering the box garden.

Hestia immediately heads to Freya’s mansion, where Bell stands between Freya and his freedom.

She proudly reclaims Bell, but Freya, still unwilling to give up, proposes a formal War Game—what becomes known as the Faction War.

Faction War Against Freya

Freya offers a handicap: other Familia may cooperate with Hestia’s side.

However, the guild forbids the Loki Familia from participating to prevent the two strongest factions from destroying each other.

Even without Loki, a massive alliance forms around Hestia—forty-six Familia, including Miach, Takemikazuchi, Hephaistos, and many inspired by Bell’s past deeds.

Hestia attends a Denatus session to decide the war’s format: after tense debate, they settle on “God Hunt” – each side must hide their main god, and victory comes from plucking the flower pinned to the enemy god’s chest.

In the ruins of the city Orza, the war begins.

Despite numerical advantage, the alliance is crushed by the elite Freya Familia, and Hestia’s allied gods are hunted down one after another, their flowers destroyed.

Soon, only four gods remain with intact flowers, including Hestia.

It appears hopeless until Ryuu Lion (now Level 6), the strategist Hedin Selland switching sides, and the sudden arrival of the Hostess of Fertility’s staff tilt the balance.

Hestia runs through the ruins with Haruhime, following Lili’s plan to reach the battlefield where Bell and others are fighting Ottar.

She updates Bell’s status mid-battle to maximize their chance of victory.

After a titanic struggle, Bell and his allies defeat Ottar.

Bell then pushes forward and reaches Freya, plucking the flower from her chest and securing victory for Hestia’s coalition.

Afterward, the goddess alliance demands Freya’s expulsion from Orario.

Hestia offers a compromise: Freya the goddess must leave, but Syr the girl may stay, and Freya’s divine self will be subordinated to Hestia as a vassal deity under supervision.

Ryuu Joins the Hestia Familia

Shortly after the faction war, Ryuu requests to officially join the Hestia Familia.

Hestia happily accepts, knowing Ryuu is a rare Level 6 adventurer with a strong moral code.

Later, when choosing a new adventurer name for Ryuu, the elf shyly proposes “Ryuu Cranel,” obviously wanting to share Bell’s surname.

Hestia explodes in outrage and smacks Ryuu on the head with her sandal for even suggesting such a thing.

Academy District, Nina, and Third Denatus

A mobile educational institution known as the Academy District returns to Orario.

Hermes, as usual, moves behind the scenes, arranging for Bell to attend as a temporary student without Hestia’s initial consent.

He argues that Bell will inevitably be drafted into the final Three Great Adventurer Quests, especially the one involving the One-Eyed Black Dragon.

Hestia reluctantly agrees, wanting Bell to understand the wider world and prepare for his fate, and allows him a “vacation” in the Academy District.

Bell survives yet another mid-level dungeon cave-in during his stay, returning stronger and more experienced.

After his visit, Academy student Nina Tulle asks to join the Hestia Familia out of admiration for Bell, leading to her being accepted as an intern.

While Bell is away on a lower-floor expedition, Hestia attends her third Denatus.

Her Familia has now reached a B(S) rank in Orario, giving Hestia significant influence in discussions, especially regarding her own children’s nicknames.

They officially grant Lili the nickname “Little Marshal” and Haruhime “Sixfold Golden Lord.”

Bell’s new nickname is deferred, as he is expected to level again soon.

Orario-Piade: City Games with the Academy District

A student uprising breaks out when the guild forcibly requisitions orichalcum from Academy District students.

To resolve the conflict, the gods agree on a grand competition: Orario-Piade, a city-versus-academy games festival.

With the Loki Familia away on expedition and the Freya Familia ostensibly disbanded, Orario lacks top fighters.

As a top-tier group with first-class adventurers, the Hestia Familia is drawn in, and Bell plus Ryuu are chosen as Orario’s representatives.

Around this time, Hestia receives a letter from the god Baldr indicating Bell will be taken to the Dragon’s Valley, where the One-Eyed Black Dragon is sealed.

Knowing Bell’s encounter with that threat is inevitable, she decides he must train with Ais Wallenstein, despite her jealousy, and reluctantly approves their joint training.

Before Bell departs with Leon (a top ace from the academy side), Hestia gives him a greatsword and a magic sword forged by Welf.

She tells him that whatever he is about to face is something he needs to see with his own eyes and feel for himself.

Bell vs. Leon and the Venomous Hundred-Foot Dragon

During the fifth match of Orario-Piade, Bell faces Leon near the Dragon’s Valley.

Hestia slips away from her part-time job to watch via the divine “god mirrors” in the coliseum.

The battle is brutal: Leon uses a transcendent technique called “Afterglow”, ruthlessly cutting Bell down.

The violence is so overwhelming that the entire stadium falls silent, stunned by the spectacle.

Syr appears at Hestia’s side and asks whether she regrets sending Bell.

Hestia answers that if he does not challenge such trials now, he will only regret it later when facing the Black Dragon.

Mid-battle, a floor-boss-class monster, the Venom Sky Centipede Dragon, bursts forth from the Dragon’s Valley.

Bell and Leon are forced to cooperate to defeat it.

Through this life-and-death struggle, Leon successfully passes his technique Afterglow to Bell.

Witnessing the danger of the Dragon’s Valley, both Orario and the Academy District realize they must stand together against future calamity and reconcile their differences.

Later, at Denatus, the gods consider Bell’s new role as the inheritor of Leon’s light.

They grant him a new nickname: “Regulus Arne” – “Lion-Rabbit of Light”, symbolizing light passed from the lion to the rabbit, which Hestia wholeheartedly approves.

“That String” and Fan Craze

When the first anime adaptation aired in 2015, Hestia’s design—especially her blue under-bust ribbon, popularly dubbed “that string”—ignited a global fan phenomenon.

Fan art sites like pixiv saw Hestia and her ribbon dominate male popularity rankings, with the top three entirely occupied by variations of her.

So many illustrations were posted in a short time that pixiv created a special feature highlighting Hestia and “that string.”

Cosplayers worldwide embraced the design; prominent cosplayer Enako described it as a boom across countries and genders.

Character designer Suzuhito Yasuda has said that Hestia’s bust was heavily emphasized in the novel text.

He started from “she’s very busty” and built the outfit around that; if the description had been different, he would have drawn her with a smaller chest.

Limited Screen Time in Some Arcs

Although Hestia is a main heroine, she is a non-combatant and forbidden to freely enter the dungeon.

As a result, in dungeon-heavy arcs like the fourth anime season’s New Chapter: Labyrinth Arc and Deep Chapter: Calamity Arc, her on-screen presence is limited.

In the latter half of those arcs, she barely appears in the actual story and mainly shows up in web previews and commentary segments.

Symbolism of Her War Game Flower

During the faction war, participating gods must wear a flower over their chest as a target.

Hestia chooses a red freesias (often translated as “red freesia”), whose flower language includes “purity”, fitting the virgin goddess of chastity.

Cross-Work References: “Wistoria: Wand and Sword”

In a special short story “A Very Far, Very Close, Another Labyrinth Tale,” Hestia and Bell read the author’s other series Wistoria: Wand and Sword in the Familia’s library.

Hestia’s favorite character is Colette, a heroine who supports the protagonist from up close, mirroring Hestia’s own position.

Other heroines in Wistoria resemble Ais and Ryuu in role—one being a distant goal and another fighting at the protagonist’s side.

This meta-layer humorously reflects the structure of Bell’s relationships in DanMachi.

Voice Actor Connections

In the anime, Hestia is voiced by Inori Minase, while her rival Ais Wallenstein is voiced by Saori Oonishi.

In real life, these two voice actors are known to be extremely close friends, to the point another cast member jokingly calls them “twins from a past life.”

Both also frequently co-star with Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Bell’s voice actor, often in close roles.

This real-world camaraderie contrasts amusingly with the in-story romantic rivalry between their characters.

Speech Pattern Parody

Some fans note that Hestia’s speaking style (especially in certain tones) loosely resembles that of a famous variety show personality.

This led to parodies combining DanMachi with travel-variety show humor, jokingly titled “DanMachi Road Trip” and featuring lines like, “Hey, you want pie?” in Hestia’s voice.

Hestia appears or is referenced in various crossover games and events, often as a support character or comedic guest.

Tales of the Rays – Appears in a 2021 collaboration event as a non-playable character, though she can be placed in the “room” system.

KonoSuba: Fantastic Days – Appears in a 2021 crossover; in classic KonoSuba fashion, she suffers slapstick misfortune, including being swallowed by the series’ signature giant frogs.

Shinobi Master – Features collaboration content with Hestia as a guest character.

Valkyrie Anatomia – Appears in crossover events tied to the DanMachi franchise.

CounterSide – Appears as a collaboration character taking the role of a ship operator, fitting her supportive nature.

In all these, Hestia retains her core traits: a tiny eager goddess, fiercely loyal to Bell Cranel, endlessly hardworking for her family, and forever iconic thanks to one very famous blue ribbon.
