Character Setting

Edit

Takemikazuchi is a male war god and the patron deity of the small Takemikazuchi Familia in Orario in the series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?.

He is a god of martial arts whose character is based on the Takemikazuchi of Japanese mythology and is voiced by Junji Majima in the anime adaptation.

Takemikazuchi resides in Orario as the head of the exploration-type Takemikazuchi Familia.

His familia is a small, poor group that only recently settled in the city, and he supplements its finances by working part-time in town.

He is an old friend of Hestia and Miach from the heavens, even though they come from different divine homelands.

Hestia affectionately calls him “Take,” and he is the one who taught her the act of full prostration as an apology technique.

Takemikazuchi is also on good terms with Hephaistos and Demeter, often socializing with them as fellow deities in Orario.

Because he is a relative newcomer to the lower world, he is frequently teased by other gods, especially Hermes.

In the city, he works at a different stall from Hestia making the popular snack jagamaru-kun, and he is quietly competitive about sales.

He nevertheless maintains an excellent relationship with Hestia, even helping manage her home when her familia spends long periods in the Dungeon.

Takemikazuchi appears as a dignified, sharp-looking young man with a topknot-style hairstyle reminiscent of ancient East Asian warriors.

He usually wears clothing inspired by the Yayoi period of the Far East, and in the anime he is sometimes seen in hakama-like attire during divine gatherings.

At his core he is sincere, responsible, and very caring, taking the troubles of others as if they were his own.

He looks after not only his own children but also the members of Hestia and Miach’s familias, showing a broad-hearted, big-brother-like nature.

He is intelligent and thoughtful, with a strong awareness of differences in human cultures, values, and customs across various nations.

Because of this, he often warns others that refusing to understand those differences can lead to needless conflict and confrontation.

Takemikazuchi is popular with women and children due to his good looks, kindness, and natural lady-killer tendencies.

This popularity causes jealousy among other male gods, who pick on him and, during the Denatus, saddle him with painfully embarrassing epithets.

Despite his attractiveness, he is extremely dense when it comes to romance directed at himself.

He tends to perceive affection from those he raised as paternal rather than romantic, which leads to comedic misunderstandings.

Like all deities in the series, Takemikazuchi is a transcendental being (Deusdea) whose divine power is deliberately sealed in the lower world.

His physical abilities are restricted to normal human levels, and violating this rule would result in immediate forced return to the heavens.

Even with this limit, Takemikazuchi is a genuine war god who has spent countless ages mastering every imaginable martial art.

He has perfected swordsmanship, spear techniques, archery, unarmed combat, and even ninja-like arts, making him a true embodiment of martial skill.

In pure technique, he can toy with adventurers who have undergone repeated Status updates and level-ups to reach superhuman strength.

He is fully capable of treating them like children in training bouts, relying solely on skill, timing, and tactics rather than divine power.

Before the great War Game and later faction conflicts, he stated he could handle up to twenty second-class adventurers (Level 3–4) or one first-class adventurer (Level 5+) on his own.

Other gods jokingly told him that if he is that strong, he should just go fight on the front lines himself.

He later proves his claims during the Faction War, where he actually fulfills this boast in real combat.

However, his stamina remains strictly at human levels, so he must end fights quickly; in drawn-out battles, adventurers’ superior physical stats will eventually overwhelm him.

He is not just a fighter but also an excellent instructor who understands how to convey technique clearly.

This teaching talent is a key reason his otherwise low-leveled familia members can fight well above what their Status alone would suggest.

Life in Orario

Takemikazuchi only started a familia in Orario relatively recently, after spending years in the Far East with the children he protected.

Because his group is poor and still developing, he works part-time to make ends meet, mirroring Hestia’s own struggles.

He sells jagamaru-kun at a different stand than Hestia, and he feels a bit of rivalry because her stall sells better.

Outside this friendly competition, he actively supports Hestia, reflects on her problems with her, and even helps cover responsibilities for her familia.

When the Hestia Familia explores the Dungeon for extended periods, Takemikazuchi often stays at their home, the Hearth Mansion, to house-sit.

He happily enjoys the hinoki bath there, which is also a favorite of Mikoto Yamato, and considers this a perfectly fair trade for his help.

In the main story’s ninth volume, Hestia consults him in secret concerning the existence of the Xenos, intelligent monsters capable of communication.

By doing so, she makes him one of the few gods who are aware of the Xenos’ existence early on.

Attitude Toward the Xenos

When the existence of the Xenos is revealed, Hephaistos reacts with instinctive rejection.

Takemikazuchi instead maintains a neutral stance and considers the issue carefully.

Drawing on his awareness of cultural differences among humans, he understands that a rush to deny something unfamiliar can cause pointless strife.

He respects Mikoto Yamato’s feelings after she bonds with the Xenos, and he chooses to honor her compassion instead of forbidding it outright.

This balanced attitude reflects his mix of rationality and empathy.

He is neither naive nor paranoid, but tries to weigh both the dangers and the possibilities of coexistence.

Faction War

In volume 18, during the Faction War against the Freya Familia, Takemikazuchi and his children join as part of the alliance forces.

When Allen Fromel leads the elite group known as the “Stout Warriors” in an offensive, Takemikazuchi chooses to act as a shield for Hestia and the others.

Despite his human-level stamina, he manages to throw and knock out twenty-one Stout Warriors with back throws and other grappling techniques.

He is ultimately eliminated from the war when the flower pinned to his chest is scattered, but his effort is crucial to the alliance’s eventual victory over the Freya Familia.

His feats during this battle essentially confirm his earlier “twenty second-class adventurers, one first-class adventurer” claim.

Other gods, half joking and half serious, continue to urge him to just fight as a front-line warrior himself since he is already so effective.

Battle Chronicle Event

In the mobile game Danmachi – Battle Chronicle, an event story titled “Undiscriminating King Championship” features Takemikazuchi in a sumo match.

In this event he even defeats Ottar in a sumo showdown, showcasing his deep understanding of martial arts.

Takemikazuchi explains that he was able to win because of his familiarity with all sorts of martial disciplines.

He notes that if Ottar had used a completely unknown style not present in the Far East, the outcome might have been different, acknowledging Ottar’s power.

Takemikazuchi’s combat style is built entirely on technique, positioning, timing, and psychological warfare rather than raw strength.

He excels in using throws and joint locks that let him defeat physically stronger opponents quickly, which is essential given his limited stamina.

He is famous within his own familia for emphasizing “technique” and “tactics” over blind reliance on Status.

He criticizes the fact that most adventurers, even many top-class elites from familias like Loki and Freya, lean too heavily on their parameters and level-ups.

According to him, modern adventurers rely too much on the Blessing (Falna) and chase convenient Status updates and rank-ups.

They often neglect the painstaking process of refining technique through effort, grit, and the will to achieve something at any cost.

Because his children train under a true war god, even their modest Status values can be pushed far beyond their apparent limits.

This approach results in a group of low-level adventurers who routinely accomplish feats that would normally be impossible for their rank.

Mikoto Yamato, for example, is able to defeat monsters of the lower floors on her own while still at Level 2.

Ōka Kashima manages to sever one of the heads of Amphisbæna, a floor boss of the lower levels, and Chigusa Hitachi can precisely destroy the special organ of the rare deep-floor monster Worm Whale.

These accomplishments are far beyond what ordinary Level 2 adventurers can achieve and are direct proof of Takemikazuchi’s teaching.

He has effectively turned careful training in technique into a way to “cheat” the usual limits of Status.

He even teaches Mikoto a signature throw known in the story as the “Crescent Moon Throw.”

However, since this move is essentially a “happy throw” similar to a pro wrestling Frankensteiner, he later earns a harsh scolding from the goddess Tsukuyomi for teaching something so flashy and risky.

Hestia and Miach

Takemikazuchi is one of Hestia’s closest god-friends, and their bond predates their arrival in the lower world.

He not only teaches her how to do a dramatic apology via prostration but also repeatedly supports her familia in concrete, practical ways.

When necessary, he even suggests that Mikoto temporarily convert to Hestia’s familia to help in a War Game.

He also watches Hestia’s home, discusses strategy with her, and becomes one of the confidants who learn about the Xenos.

He is likewise friendly with Miach and looks after Miach Familia members as if they were partly his own.

This shared sense of responsibility among the three gods further underlines his role as a dependable, grounded deity.

He is also acquainted with Hephaistos and Demeter, regularly interacting with them in Orario’s divine social circles.

His relationships with these gods show he is well-liked and trusted, even while being teased for his popularity.

His Children: Mikoto, Ōka, and Chigusa

The main members of the Takemikazuchi Familia are Mikoto Yamato, Ōka Kashima, and Chigusa Hitachi.

All three were once children he protected in the Far East and later became his formal followers after growing up.

He raised them together with other gods, one of whom is the goddess Tsukuyomi.

This shared upbringing gave the group a strong “large extended family” atmosphere, with Takemikazuchi as a father figure.

Mikoto eventually transfers to the Hestia Familia for plot reasons, but her respect and affection for Takemikazuchi never diminish.

She continues to see him as both a mentor and a parental figure, even as she fights alongside Bell Cranel and his companions.

From Takemikazuchi’s perspective, Mikoto and the others are “children he raised” rather than potential romantic partners.

This parental viewpoint is one reason he is so oblivious to Mikoto’s more personal feelings toward him.

Mikoto’s Feelings and Light Romance

Mikoto harbors romantic feelings for Takemikazuchi, which she struggles to express openly.

Her emotions are tangled because she also deeply respects him as a warrior and guardian.

Takemikazuchi, however, is a stereotypical thick-headed man when it comes to romance.

He sees Mikoto as a daughter he raised and not as a woman, resulting in a “dense man and pining girl” dynamic that often plays out as lighthearted romantic comedy.

This situation leads to various small “love comedy” incidents between them.

Even so, both remain deeply loyal to each other as familia and family.

Haruhime Sanjouno and Others

Takemikazuchi also knew Haruhime Sanjouno during her childhood.

He noticed how suffocated she felt in her strict household and took pity on her situation.

He told Mikoto and the others to sneak Haruhime out of her house so she could play and experience a bit of freedom.

Afterward, he went to her family and apologized by prostrating himself as a sign of deep remorse and respect, despite being a god.

This episode highlights both his empathy and his willingness to humble himself for the sake of children.

It also shows his readiness to defy social expectations when he believes a child’s happiness is at stake.

He also plays a background role supporting various other adventurers connected to his friends’ familias.

Many younger characters see him as a reliable adult who is firm but kind.

In the mobile game Danmemo (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? – Memoria Freese), there was an early concept for a Christmas event centered on Haruhime Sanjouno.

The initial plot draft included Takemikazuchi fighting Valetta, a member of the Evilus faction introduced in the spin-off Sword Oratoria.

However, the developers felt that this scenario did not really showcase what made Takemikazuchi charming and unique.

As a result, that version of the event was scrapped, and the story was reworked into something that better highlighted Haruhime and Takemikazuchi’s appeal.

During the Denatus, where gods gather and assign adventurers their nicknames, Takemikazuchi becomes a target of playful bullying by jealous male gods.

They deliberately give him overly painful and embarrassing epithets, leaving him holding his head in exasperation.

Even though he is a god, he is often the one doing the apologizing, including kneeling in full prostration to human families.

This humility and willingness to bow his head make him both comedic and endearing.

He may be a war god capable of throwing high-level adventurers around, but he is also the sort of person who worries about sales numbers for fried potato snacks.

That blend of terrifying martial prowess, fatherly gentleness, and grounded, everyday concerns is what makes Takemikazuchi such a distinctive and beloved character.
