Jack the Ripper is the captain of the Green Mantis squad, one of the nine Magic Knight squads that protect the Clover Kingdom.
He is famed and feared for his unique Slash Magic, which allows him to adapt his blades to cut through virtually anything.
He openly calls himself a lover of destruction and “slashing,” taking extreme joy in cutting enemies and obstacles apart.
Despite his crude personality, Jack is acknowledged as one of the strongest captains and has earned the rank of Grand Magic Knight.
He constantly bickers with Yami Sukehiro, captain of the Black Bulls, and is mockingly called things like “Tall Freak” and “Tall Man” by him.
However, the two share a strange camaraderie and mutual respect, having once fought so fiercely that they reportedly shaved off an entire mountain.
Jack is a very tall and extremely lean man, the tallest among the Magic Knight captains.
He has long black hair, sharp orange eyes, and a reptilian or mantis-like presence that fits his squad’s theme.
A distinctive red line runs from his left eye down to his jaw, making his expression look even more vicious.
He often sticks out his long tongue, adding to his predatory and unsettling vibe.
After the six months of training in the Heart Kingdom era, his outfit gains a cloak and details that resemble mantis wings.
Even with the new look, his fundamental silhouette remains the same: long, thin, and dangerous-looking.
Jack is an unapologetic battle junkie who finds intense pleasure in cutting strong opponents to pieces.
He laughs loudly and maniacally in combat, often using a harsh “Ka-ka!” kind of laugh while grinning with his tongue out.
He uses rough language with everyone, regardless of rank or status, and comes off as constantly hostile or ready to fight.
Meetings and strategy talks bore him unless a strong opponent or a big battle is mentioned, at which point he becomes hyper-focused.
He loves provoking others and frequently trades insults with Yami Sukehiro, treating him as both a rival and a benchmark for strength.
Even so, he clearly acknowledges Yami’s power and will rely on him in emergencies, showing that his respect is real beneath the trash talk.
Jack is actually capable of recognizing and praising skill when he sees it.
For example, when Finral Roulacase supports him perfectly with Spatial Magic during the elf incident, Jack bluntly compliments him with, “You’re not bad.”
He even tries to “borrow” Finral’s services from Yami, only to be angrily refused.
This shows that behind his rude exterior, Jack is pragmatic about talent and not blinded by pride.
As a captain, Jack tends to act on his own rather than carefully commanding from the rear.
In dangerous situations he often charges forward himself, sometimes leaving his squad members to fend for themselves, emphasizing his reckless, front-line style.
Despite being rough and self-centered on the surface, Jack has a code of his own and does care about results and strength.
His view of others can change when they prove themselves in real battle, even if they come from the very lowest social classes.
Jack was born a commoner and grew up as the son of a hunter in the mountains.
His father was conservative and repeatedly drilled into him the rule: “Never go after anything that looks stronger than you.”
Following that rule, Jack spent his childhood hunting only weaker prey, living a relatively small and safe life.
When his magic manifested as blades suited for cutting, his father was delighted, believing Jack would make an excellent hunter.
At age thirteen, Jack’s life changed when his father went into the mountains and never came back alive.
His father’s body was returned with a massive claw mark on his back, evidence that he had been killed by the mountain’s apex creature, known as the “mountain lord.”
Breaking his father’s lifelong rule, Jack decided to confront this mountain lord himself.
The story does not dwell on the details of the fight, but Jack appears afterward with little visible damage, implying a decisive victory.
In defeating a foe stronger than himself, Jack experienced a rush of exhilaration and a deep joy in overcoming such strength.
In that moment, he realized how thrilling it was to cut down powerful opponents and impulsively decided: “I’m going to join the Magic Knights.”
From then on, his life goal became simple and brutal: to slice apart anything stronger than him.
This drive, combined with his frightening talent, eventually earned him a captain’s position and, later, a noble title.
Because of his commoner origins, Jack is particularly willing to take commoners into his squad, the Green Mantis.
He believes in giving them a real chance to prove themselves as Magic Knights, although he initially draws a line at taking in people from the very lowest “peasant” class.
Green Mantis Squad
Jack is the current captain of the Green Mantis squad of the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights.
Under his leadership, the squad is known for its high number of commoner members and a somewhat rough, mercenary-like vibe.
In terms of performance, the squad ranks sixth among the nine squads early in the story, based on earned “stars.”
Despite his chaotic personality, Jack is not completely irresponsible as a captain and does attempt to manage and improve his squad in his own way.
During the Royal Knights Selection Exam, he allows new members and lower-ranked Knights to show their worth, giving them opportunities in real combat.
This reflects a results-based mindset: if they prove themselves in battle, he will acknowledge them, regardless of status.
Relationship with Yami Sukehiro
Jack’s most notable relationship is with Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls.
Every time they meet, they quickly slip into foul-mouthed arguments and posturing.
Yami mocks him with nicknames such as “Tall Freak” and “Tall Man,” highlighting Jack’s height and strange proportions.
Jack, in turn, constantly tries to one-up Yami and belittles him in words, even though he clearly respects him deep down.
At one point in the past, Jack and Yami clashed so violently that they carved away an entire mountain in their fight.
This legendary duel cemented their rivalry and mutual recognition as monsters in combat.
When Yami is later captured by Dante Zogratis of the Spade Kingdom, Jack sarcastically claims he is not doing anything “for that idiot.”
However, his actions contradict his words: he seriously considers, and almost attempts, to storm the Spade Kingdom alone to rescue Yami.
Seeing Magna Swing, a peasant from Yami’s Black Bulls, defeat Dante in a brutal one-on-one fight changes Jack’s thinking.
He realizes that Yami’s decision to accept even the lowest peasants into his squad has produced incredible strength and starts to genuinely respect that approach.
Relationship with Nacht Faust and Morgen Faust
Jack is one of the few captains who seems to know of Nacht Faust before his public return to the Magic Knights.
When Nacht appears at the captains’ meeting as the Black Bulls’ vice-captain and a Devil host, Jack senses familiarity and tries to question him.
Jack feels a strange discrepancy in the way Nacht uses his magic.
Nacht brushes him off, eventually telling him that “the person you remember is no longer here,” referring to his late twin brother Morgen Faust.
Jack’s remembered impression is actually of Morgen, not Nacht, which explains the mismatch he senses between appearance, manner, and magic.
This hints at Jack having some past contact or at least knowledge of Morgen during his time as a Magic Knight.
Later, Nacht watches Jack fight Dante and is forced to re-evaluate Jack’s capabilities.
Initially underestimating him, Nacht ends up impressed by Jack’s terrifying adaptability and resolve.
Relationship with Commoners and Peasants
Because Jack himself rose from commoner origins, he actively recruits commoners into the Green Mantis squad.
He wants to give talented commoners a chance to succeed as Magic Knights, independent of aristocratic bloodlines.
At first, however, he is skeptical about the idea of recruiting people from the very lowest “peasant” tier.
He views Yami’s acceptance of such people into the Black Bulls as reckless and questionable.
After witnessing Magna Swing and Zora Ideale, both peasants, risk their lives and ultimately defeat Dante Zogratis, Jack’s outlook changes.
He comes to genuinely acknowledge the strength and potential of peasants, especially when forged in desperate, real battles.
Overall Magic Style
Jack specializes in an offensive magic type known as Slash Magic.
When activated, his magic manifests as huge green scythe-like blades on his forearms, resembling the forelegs of a praying mantis.
These blades are made of pure magic and can be reformed after being destroyed.
He combines this magic with physical reinforcement spells to turn himself into a high-speed, close-combat blender.
The true terrifying feature of his Slash Magic is its adaptability.
In the middle of combat, Jack can sense the properties of an enemy’s magic and sharpen or alter his blades to cut through it specifically.
This means that even magics that are usually impervious to damage can be broken once Jack “learns” them through repeated clashes.
The longer the fight goes on and the more he slashes, the faster and more lethal he becomes.
He even claims, “There’s nothing I can’t cut,” and this is not just empty boasting.
He has proven capable of cutting through Spatial Magic, ultra-durable defenses, gravity fields, and even magic enhanced by otherworldly devils.
He can also use conventional Body Reinforcement magic to increase his speed and mobility.
In later battles, he evolves his style further, sprouting blades not only from his arms but also his legs and even his head.
Slash Magic: Death Scythe
Death Scythe is Jack’s basic offensive spell and the foundation of all his techniques.
He forms large scythe-like magical blades on his forearms and uses them to physically slash enemies and the environment.
He can also release slashes as ranged attacks, sending cutting waves across distance.
As the clash continues, his blades automatically refine themselves to counter the opponent’s specific magic.
By the time he is fighting in the Spade Kingdom, Jack can manifest multiple blades on different parts of his body.
These blades can be moved and run along surfaces at will, allowing him to attack from unexpected angles.
Jack’s Death Scythe has been shown to be strong enough that even Vetto, a member of the reincarnated elf group known for extreme toughness, chose to dodge it instead of tanking it.
He has also demonstrated the ability to cut magic influenced by devils from “the other world,” including highly advanced healing magic.
Slash Magic: Death Scythe – Wild Bloom
Death Scythe – Wild Bloom (sometimes rendered as “Mad Bloom” or “Crazy Bloom”) is Jack’s rapid-fire multi-slash technique.
Using both of his blades, he unleashes a flood of slashes that tear through a wide area.
Despite looking wild and chaotic, his control is surprisingly precise.
He can, for example, destroy only a wall while cleanly avoiding nearby allies.
This technique is one of the clearest displays of his adaptive slash capability.
He uses it to cut through the Spatial Magic of Langris Vaude, as well as the Gravity Magic of Dante Zogratis and the highest-ranked devil Lucifero.
Jack’s combat style is centered on relentless aggression and adaptation under pressure.
He excels in drawn-out battles where he can learn, adjust, and eventually overwhelm his opponents.
His blades are not fixed in type; their cutting nature evolves to match what he is currently up against.
When facing Spatial Magic, they become capable of carving open distorted space; when facing hardened defenses, they sharpen to pierce or sever them.
He has cut:
– The Spatial Magic of Langris Vaude during the elf reincarnation crisis.
– Extremely high-defense magic and terrain such as rock and earth.
– Dante Zogratis’s Gravity Magic, which initially pinned him to the ground.
– Magic tied to devils and even partially manifested devil power of Lucifero.
The more he slashes, the faster his movements become, both magically and physically.
Because of this, his opponents often find themselves gradually losing ground the longer they let him keep fighting.
Jack also has a vicious killing instinct and near-fearless mindset, rarely backing down even when badly injured.
This stubbornness borders on self-destructive but makes him an incredibly difficult opponent to put down.
Elf Reincarnation Incident
During the elf reincarnation crisis, Jack teams up with Yami Sukehiro and Finral Roulacase to confront rampaging elves.
Their combination of spatial support and high-powered slashes allows them to quickly defeat multiple enemies.
Jack ends up facing Langris Vaude, who is possessed by an elf and wielding massively enhanced Spatial Magic.
At first, Jack struggles, as Langris’s magic erases everything it touches, making it seem impossible to “cut.”
However, as their battle continues, Jack’s Slash Magic adapts.
He gradually refines his blades to the point where he can slice through the Spatial Magic itself.
Ultimately, Jack overcomes Langris, proving that his adaptability can outpace even reality-erasing magic.
Afterward, he later intervenes when Noelle Silva is struggling against Fana, an elf and reincarnated Third Eye member, and engages Fana in combat.
When Fana learns what truly happened to Licht and the elves, the battle stops and they escape together from the ongoing chaos.
Even then, Jack is still itching to slice Fana apart, leading her to mentally label him as a dangerously unhinged person.
Anime-Original Crystal Competition
In the anime-original six-month training arc, Jack participates in a special crystal-capture team battle restricted to Magic Knight captains.
He forms a team with Yami Sukehiro, Dorothy Unsworth, and Kaiser Granvorka.
During the battle, he is at one point ensnared by William Vangeance’s World Tree Magic, Mistilteinn Tree, appearing to be on the verge of elimination.
He is then freed when Nozel Silva’s Silver Eagle spear spell shatters the tree, allowing Jack to return to the fight just in time.
Back in action, he slashes apart Fuegoleon Vermillion’s Salamander’s Breath, demonstrating once again that if you can throw it at him, he can probably cut it.
This match further showcases the dangerous versatility of his cutting power even among the strongest captains.
Pre-Spade Kingdom War: Captains’ Meeting
After the Spade Kingdom’s Dark Triad attacks Clover, abducting William Vangeance and Yami Sukehiro, an emergency captains’ meeting is called.
When Yuno Grinberryall reports what he witnessed of Zenon Zogratis’s power, Jack wastes no time in mocking him for his failure.
Frustrated with the slow pace of the discussion, Jack tries to leave the meeting entirely.
Nozel Silva calls him out, asking if he intends to invade the Spade Kingdom on his own.
Jack denies doing it “for that idiot Yami,” insisting it is none of the others’ business even if he did.
Beneath his insults, however, it is clear that he is angry and deeply unsettled that someone managed to kidnap a captain like Yami.
Nacht Faust then appears and reveals information about the Tree of Qliphoth and his own nature as a Devil host.
Jack recognizes something off about Nacht, sensing a difference from the person he thought he knew, which was actually Nacht’s late brother Morgen.
When Nacht explains the plan to invade the Spade Kingdom and stop the Tree of Qliphoth ritual, Jack is among the first to volunteer.
Yuno steps up at the same time, and Jack initially tries to discourage him, pointing out that Yuno has already lost once.
Once Jack learns that Yuno is secretly of Spade Kingdom royal blood, he briefly shows some suspicion.
But sensing Yuno’s overwhelming potential, Jack drops the matter and focuses on the upcoming war.
Spade Kingdom Raid and Battle Against Dante Zogratis
Jack is chosen as one of the elite members of the assault team that Nacht assembles to invade the Spade Kingdom.
Using Nacht’s Shadow Magic, Jack, Nacht, and Fuegoleon Vermillion infiltrate the castle at the heart of the kingdom.
Along the way they encounter one of the Dark Disciples, servants empowered by the Dark Triad’s devil magic.
Fuegoleon stays behind to handle them, letting Jack and Nacht continue deeper into the stronghold.
They eventually confront Dante Zogratis, the Dark Triad member who previously fought Yami and the Black Bulls.
Jack immediately tries to tear him apart, but Dante now has far greater durability and an even stronger regeneration factor.
Dante crushes Jack with Gravity Magic, forcing him to the ground and leaving him seemingly helpless.
Nacht, in a form where he has united with his devils (Devil Union), intervenes and saves Jack from what looks like a finishing blow.
Pinned and struggling, Jack remembers his father’s warning never to attack things stronger than him.
He also recalls how breaking that rule and killing the mountain lord changed his life and made him who he is.
When Dante casually tells him, “Yami Sukehiro was a lot more entertaining than you,” it hits a nerve.
Jack, already furious and humiliated, takes that as an unforgivable insult.
Still on the ground, he starts moving just the blades of his Death Scythe, sharpening them even as he lies pinned under gravity.
His Slash Magic gradually begins to slice apart Dante’s Gravity Magic itself, nullifying its effect on him.
Giving in fully to his urge to “cut,” Jack rises to his feet, his body sprouting multiple blades from his limbs and head.
He then launches a flurry of slashes that tear into Dante, forcing even his mighty regeneration to strain.
He declares that those who survive lethal battles are the truly strong, not the ones who look good on paper.
Nacht, who had previously written Jack off as a mere brute, is forced to recognize how dangerous and powerful Jack really is when pushed.
However, the situation shifts again when the first gate of the Tree of Qliphoth opens.
The highest-ranking devils Nahamah and Lilith appear and attack from another battlefield, and the Dark Triad’s devils can now exert 100% of their power.
With Devil power fully unleashed, Dante overwhelms Jack once more and leaves him on the verge of collapse.
Even so, Jack refuses to stay down and keeps trying to fight, driven by sheer stubbornness and bloodlust.
At that moment, Magna Swing and Zora Ideale unexpectedly arrive, having infiltrated the Spade Kingdom on their own to save Yami.
Magna uses a new spell that links his and Dante’s magic power, forcing Dante into a brutally fair one-on-one slugfest.
Jack watches as Magna, a so-called “weak” peasant, wins a life-or-death battle against a monster like Dante.
Impressed and shaken, Jack fully acknowledges Magna and Zora’s strength and, by extension, the potential of peasants.
After the group moves on to press the fight deeper into the castle, Dante begins to recover at an unnaturally fast rate.
Jack notices this abnormal regeneration and returns to finish him off.
He tells Dante not to “spoil” Magna and Zora’s victory and then cuts him down for good.
It is a rare moment where Jack shows a kind of grim honor and respect for others’ hard-won triumphs.
Battle Against Lucifero’s Manifestation
When the highest-ranking devil Lucifero attempts to manifest into the world, albeit in an incomplete form, Jack joins the other captains in battling him.
Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance are excluded from this fight because they are being used as sacrifices for the ritual.
Jack uses his most refined Slash Magic to try to cut Lucifero and his Gravity Magic apart.
Despite managing to slice through Gravity Magic before, this time the power difference is overwhelming.
Lucifero casually knocks aside Jack and the other captains, thoroughly dominating the battlefield.
Jack is defeated along with the rest, showing that even his adaptability has limits against an entity of such absolute power.
“Judgment Day” and Confrontation with Morgen Faust
During the “Judgment Day” events, the new villain Lucius Zogratis (using Julius Novachrono’s body) begins remaking the world.
He resurrects or recreates various individuals as “Paladins,” holy knights empowered by devil and soul manipulation magic.
Among these Paladins is Morgen Faust, Nacht’s deceased twin brother and former Magic Knight.
Morgen, now a Paladin loyal to Lucius, attacks Jack.
In their encounter, Morgen pierces Jack through the torso, inflicting a fatal wound.
Despite the grievous injury, Jack musters his remaining strength to launch one final, all-out attack.
He releases a last slash worthy of his reputation as the one who can cut anything.
After that final blow, Jack dies, falling in battle against the Paladin version of the man he once vaguely remembered.
Jack’s name is a direct reference to “Jack the Ripper,” the infamous serial killer from real-world history.
The Japanese spelling originally sometimes appeared as “Jack the Ripper,” but has since been standardized in official materials and in the anime as “Jack the Ripper” without a space in his surname.
Because of this, searching his name often brings up the historical criminal before the fictional character.
The series plays on this association intentionally, tying the idea of a “ripper” to Jack’s obsession with cutting and his scythe-like blades.
Within the story, Jack’s combination of commoner roots, destructive obsession, and adaptive Slash Magic makes him one of the most distinctive and unpredictable captains.
He is loud, abrasive, and terrifying—but also brutally honest about strength and oddly fair when it comes to acknowledging those who earn his respect in battle.
