Character Setting

Edit

Souka is a female warrior from the former Lizardman Kingdom who, after being named by Rimuru Tempest, evolved into a Dragonewt and now serves as the head of Souei’s secret intelligence corps in the nation of Tempest.

Souka is the younger sister of Gabiru and formerly served as the captain of the royal guard for the Lizardman Kingdom’s chieftain.

After the defeat of the Orc Lord, she moved to the Jura Tempest Federation under orders from her father, Abiru, both to watch over Gabiru and to broaden her knowledge of other nations and races.

She voluntarily requested to become one of Rimuru Tempest’s subordinates.

Rimuru named her “Souka,” which triggered her evolution from a Lizardman into a Dragonewt.

Following this evolution, Souka’s appearance changed from a typical Lizardman to that of a human-like girl with dragon wings, horns, and small fangs.

Her four personal subordinates also evolved into more humanlike forms, though not all Lizardmen underwent such drastic changes; Gabiru and his subordinates, for example, showed no particularly notable change in appearance.

By leveraging her skill often translated as “Dragon Scale Transformation,” she can make her appearance even closer to that of a human.

In everyday life she usually keeps her wings and horns hidden, only revealing them during movement or combat, though her horns may pop out reflexively when she is surprised or emotionally agitated.

In terms of strength, Souka and her four subordinates, together with Gabiru, achieved exceptional growth compared to other Lizardmen.

Her four subordinates reached roughly B+ rank, Souka herself reached around A– rank, and Gabiru casually surpassed the barrier to full A rank.

She retains all the battle experience and technical skill she had as a Lizardman warrior, so her combat ability is considered more than sufficient.

Souka is voiced by Rumi Okubo in anime adaptations.

After receiving her name from Rimuru Tempest, Souka evolved into a Dragonewt, dramatically enhancing both her physical capabilities and magical energy.

Her newly acquired skill allows her to cloak her draconic traits and assume a more inconspicuous form, which is especially useful for covert operations.

When Gabiru underwent his own awakened evolution, Souka received a blessing as his blood relative.

This blessing elevated her magicule quantity to a level comparable to that of a high-ranking demon general, while her four direct subordinates were reinforced to a level roughly equivalent to high-ranking demons.

Her evolution has occurred relatively recently within the story timeline.

Because of this, there are scenes where she is still self-conscious, wondering if her new appearance looks strange to others.

Souka is earnest, diligent, and very serious about her duties, especially in her role as a warrior and intelligence officer.

She trains constantly and takes pride in her work, but she also has a shy and somewhat awkward side when it comes to her personal feelings.

Although she often argues with her older brother Gabiru whenever they meet, the two are actually on very good terms.

They worry about each other deeply, and their supposed quarrels are so transparent that people around them can easily tell they are a close-knit pair of siblings.

Souka shows great respect and loyalty toward Rimuru Tempest as her lord.

At the same time, she harbors an intense admiration—possibly more than admiration—for Souei, the man who once saved both her and her father.

Because she evolved only recently, she sometimes frets about whether her horns, wings, or overall look might be off-putting.

This insecurity, combined with her feelings for Souei, occasionally leads to cute, flustered reactions in spin-off stories.

Under orders from her father Abiru, Souka relocated to the nation of Tempest primarily for two reasons.

She was to act as Gabiru’s monitor and guardian and to broaden her horizons by interacting with various races and foreign countries.

Souka pledged allegiance to Rimuru and was assigned to be one of his subordinates.

Recognizing her talent and her strong desire to serve Souei, Rimuru placed her under Souei’s command in Tempest’s intelligence and covert operations division.

In that role, Souka works as Souei’s deputy, overseeing secret missions, espionage, and reconnaissance.

Her four subordinates—Toka (East Flower), Saika (West Flower), Hokusou (North Spear), and Nansou (South Spear)—operate as an elite squad under her direct command.

Souka deeply respects Souei because he once saved her father’s life and also rescued her.

This event became one of her core motivations for going to Tempest, as she wanted the chance to serve directly under him.

Rimuru Tempest responded to this wish and arranged for Souka and her four subordinates to be placed under Souei in the intelligence corps.

Souka quickly rose to become Souei’s vice-captain, working beside him in stealth operations, reconnaissance, and training.

Souei himself highly values Souka’s skills and judgment.

He has stated to Benimaru that, among his subordinates, Souka is his most skilled subordinate and someone in whom he places complete trust.

Because they so often train together or work side-by-side, Souka’s feelings for Souei are frequently teased in spin-off works.

She insists that she merely “admires him as a warrior,” but her behavior suggests something more.

In the spin-off series “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Slime Diaries,” Shion asks Souka directly whether she likes Souei.

Souka becomes flustered and denies having romantic feelings, yet she is shown secretly watching Souei train from the shadows and even trying to peek at his written wish during the Tanabata festival, despite knowing it is improper.

In another cute scene, she makes snow sculptures of herself and Souei arranged so that they stand close together.

These moments strongly hint that her “admiration” borders on romantic affection, even if she has not fully acknowledged it herself.

In the spin-off “The Ways of the Monster Nation,” Souka is shown surveilling a hidden underground group—essentially a fan club for Shion and Shuna—while clinging to the ceiling.

When the question of who would be the most suitable lawful wife for Rimuru arises, some female Hobgoblins nominate Benimaru, and Souka blurts out via communication magic, “I would like Souei-sama to be by his side as well!” which prompts Rimuru to protest, “Don’t you go over to that side too.”

This exchange also plays on the fact that monsters like Rimuru do not have fixed human gender in the usual sense, so the idea of “that side” is humorously questionable.

Even so, the scene underscores Souka’s emotional attachment to Souei and her unique way of expressing it.

Gabiru is Souka’s older brother, and their relationship is portrayed as a comedic mix of bickering and genuine familial affection.

Whenever they meet, they almost inevitably fall into loud arguments, scolding or criticizing one another.

Despite this, both siblings care deeply for each other.

Their concern is obvious enough that others around them easily see through the façade and understand how close they actually are.

Abiru, their father and the chieftain of the former Lizardman Kingdom, ordered Souka to accompany Gabiru to Tempest.

He entrusted her with watching over Gabiru’s behavior while also encouraging her to learn from the outside world and its many races.

When Gabiru later undergoes awakened evolution, the blessing he receives also benefits Souka through their blood ties.

This further boosts Souka’s power and that of her four subordinates, reinforcing their status as an elite combat and intelligence unit within Tempest.
