Luminous Valentine is a female vampire queen, a Demon Lord of the highest rank, and the hidden patron deity of the Holy Empire Ruberios in the series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
Name: Luminous Valentine
Race: High Blood (True Blood Magic Spirit Princess)
Gender: Female
Titles: Demon Lord, Queen of Nightmares, True Ancestor, Goddess Luminous, Fifth Demon Lord
Affiliation: Holy Empire Ruberios (secretly), Vampires
Ultimate Skills: Lustful King Asmodeus, later evolves into Virtuous King Ahura Mazda and Sinful King Angra Mainyu
Former Unique Skill: Lustful One (Lust)
Weapon: Night Rose, a mythic-grade sword named after her destroyed capital
First-Person Pronoun in original: archaic “I” used by nobility (translated as “I” here)
Voice Actor (anime): Lynn
Luminous appears as a beautiful young girl with shining silver hair and heterochromatic “mystic eyes”: one golden-red, one blue-gold.
Her refined bearing and noble aura make her look every bit the royalty and deity that people believe her to be.
Despite her divine image, she is actually a vampire Demon Lord with a sharp tongue and a proudly arrogant attitude.
She speaks in a lofty, imperious tone, but her actions show deep responsibility toward her people and those she cares about.
She tends to hide in seclusion and delegate most real-world management to subordinates, leading Rimuru Tempest to quietly suspect she might just be lazy.
She also shows clear fondness for women close to her, especially Chloe Aubert and Hinata Sakaguchi, with strong yuri-flavored overtones.
One of her core beliefs is summarized in her line:
“**There is no justice that can satisfy all free wills.
Believing you can achieve that is the truly arrogant thought, is it not?**”
Luminous is one of the rare beings who has reached the level of an awakened Demon Lord.
She is the queen and progenitor-like figure of the vampire race, often referred to as the True Ancestor.
Born as a vampire princess from the blood of the “God Progenitor” Twilight Valentine, she eventually slew him herself and took control of the vampire lineage.
Around two thousand years before the main story, her proud vampire nation and its capital Night Rose were annihilated by Veldora Tempest.
To ensure the survival of the vampires and secure a stable food supply, she founded the Holy Empire Ruberios.
About fifteen hundred years ago, she allowed herself to be worshipped as the god Luminous, building a religion-centered system where humans are protected under her rule.
On the surface, Ruberios is a human theocracy led by the Holy Church that worships the goddess Luminous.
In reality, that “god” is Luminous Valentine herself, hiding deep underground while her subordinates manage the state, church, and vampire society above.
From Vampire Princess to Demon Lord
Luminous was created by Twilight Valentine, a quasi-divine being tasked by the world’s creator, Veldanava, to populate the world with intelligent races.
Twilight created humans, vampires, elves, dwarves, beastmen, ogres, and more, with Luminous as a vampire princess and his disciple ranked second among his students.
Over time, Twilight’s experiments became increasingly twisted and dangerous to the world.
Unable to tolerate his madness and unethical behavior, Luminous killed him with her own hands, ending the life of her “father” and creator.
Her closest retainers, including Louis Valentin and Roy Valentin, were also products of Twilight’s creation.
This history strains her relationship with Dagruel, an older Demon Lord and Twilight’s old friend, who resents that she killed him.
Destruction of the Vampire Kingdom
Two thousand years ago, Luminous ruled a straightforward vampire kingdom.
Humans living there paid “taxes” in the form of small amounts of blood, while the vampire aristocracy protected them from external threats.
This ended when Veldora Tempest destroyed the capital Night Rose, wiping out her nation almost entirely.
The event left Luminous with a deep hatred and wariness toward Veldora, whom she often calls things like “lizard,” “useless dragon,” and “evil dragon.”
To avoid future annihilation and to recover, she moved her base underground and began to reshape her society and food system.
The new hidden capital, Night Garden, was built beneath Ruberios both to shield from sunlight and to stay off Veldora’s radar.
Creation of Ruberios and the Luminous Faith
In response to her kingdom’s destruction, Luminous reconstructed her rule using humans and religion as the core.
She established the Holy Empire Ruberios, a state whose official religion worships “God Luminous” as the sole, absolute deity.
Humans are protected citizens, while vampires live in secret and feed on them in a highly controlled way.
Faith in Luminous strengthens the state, consolidates power, and provides her with both food and power via her unique system of “Faith and Grace.”
Around 1500 years ago, she formally took on the role of “God Luminous” as an object of faith.
She then stepped back from the spotlight, appointing Roy Valentin as the public-facing Demon Lord and Louis Valentin as the Holy Emperor, while she herself hid as the “true” ruler behind the scenes.
Friendship with Chloe and Knowledge of the Future
Due to time travel, Luminous spent nearly a thousand years interacting with the time-traveling Chloe Aubert.
Through Chloe, she learned of Rimuru Tempest and certain future events, including crucial points involving humanity’s survival and world-shaking conflicts.
This makes her one of the few characters who is partly aware of the “future” before it happens.
As a result, she watches Rimuru carefully from a distance, prepared to intervene if things deviate too dangerously from what she was told.
After Hinata Sakaguchi reincarnates into this world, Luminous seals Chloe’s body and the personality Chronoa, striving to manage the timeline and reduce risk.
However, as Rimuru proclaims himself a Demon Lord and clashes with Hinata, Luminous realizes events are diverging from the “known” future and grows increasingly anxious internally.
Walpurgis and Exposure as a Demon Lord
In Volume 6, she attends the Demon Lords’ banquet, Walpurgis, disguised as Roy Valentin’s maid.
Her goal is to quietly assess Rimuru and be ready to protect him if the worst happens, as he is crucial to her friend’s future.
Some of the oldest Demon Lords already suspect or know her real identity but keep her secret.
Her plan, however, collapses when Milim Nava and Veldora carelessly mention her by name, exposing that the “maid” is actually Luminous Valentine.
With her cover blown among Demon Lords, she formally returns to the Demon Lord council as herself.
Even so, she strictly orders everyone to keep her identity hidden from the outside world, as revealing that the Church’s only god is a Demon Lord could ruin both Ruberios and the vampires.
Shortly afterward, Roy Valentin dies after underestimating an intruder during a new moon, losing the long-standing “fake Demon Lord” that kept up the façade.
This throws Ruberios’s delicate system into a new phase of uncertainty.
Confrontation with the Seven Days Clergy
The Seven Days Clergy are legendary human heroes who serve as Ruberios’s highest advisors and secretly know Luminous’s identity.
Over centuries, they drift from faithful guardians into self-indulgent power-holders obsessed with monopolizing Luminous’s favor.
Extended life from her technique “Kiss of Love” makes them fiercely cling to their positions and lifespan.
Luminous, being naturally immortal, fails to fully grasp their desperation and gradually extends intervals between the rituals, inadvertently fueling their fear and scheming.
The clergy manipulate events from the shadows, orchestrating conflicts involving Rimuru’s nation and Ruberios.
Their schemes nearly get Hinata killed during the tension between Tempest and Ruberios.
Enraged that Hinata was forced to the brink of death (and effectively died once), Luminous decides enough is enough.
As the true ruler and god they betrayed, she personally executes the Seven Days Clergy, ending their long, corrupted tenure with a heavy but resolute heart.
Treaty with Rimuru and the End of “Kill All Monsters”
Luminous feels responsibility for how Ruberios’s dogmatic stance almost led to a disastrous all-out war with Rimuru’s monster nation.
The old doctrine of the Luminous Church was simple: monsters exist only to be destroyed and must never be allowed to coexist with humanity.
This doctrine, meant to protect humans from monstrous threats, ironically pushed Ruberios into initiating a conflict that should have been avoidable.
Seeing how close this came to mass tragedy, Luminous agrees to fundamentally change course.
After disciplining Veldora for his past actions and the chaos he caused, she reconciles with Rimuru.
They sign a 100-year non-aggression treaty between Ruberios and the Jura Tempest Federation, formally establishing diplomatic relations.
The Luminous Church’s “no monsters allowed” doctrine is officially abolished.
For Luminous, faith itself remains useful, but she never cared about that specific doctrine beyond how it structured human society and her food supply.
Cultural and Technological Exchange
Attending Tempest’s nation-opening festival, Luminous is impressed by its cultural vibrancy and technology.
She sees value in peaceful exchange rather than constant tension.
As a major gesture of trust, she teaches Rimuru the secret system of “Faith and Grace,” allowing him to implement similar divine magic mechanics using faith and magicules.
In return, Rimuru accepts researchers from Ruberios—many of them “Transcendents” among vampires—to collaborate with Tempest.
In Volume 11, Luminous invites Rimuru and his allies to Ruberios for a music-focused cultural exchange.
This event, however, is ambushed by Granbell Rosso and Yuuki Kagurazaka, and Luminous nearly loses both Chloe and Hinata.
Working together with Rimuru, she manages to save them, cementing a practical alliance and deepening mutual trust.
The crisis becomes a turning point where her role as a hidden “enemy god” transitions into that of a powerful but genuine ally.
Controlled Feeding and “Scripted Salvation”
Vampires in Luminous’s domain feed on the life force contained in blood.
They are particularly fond of blood from humans who live happy, peaceful lives, which has richer life energy.
However, the amount needed is small, and high-ranking “Transcendent” vampires can survive without drinking blood at all.
Luminous strictly forbids any feeding that would kill humans or drain them to dangerous levels, imposing a rule of moderation.
Typically, vampires charm humans and quietly take small amounts of blood.
To the humans, at most, this causes mild anemia and never death, as long as the rules are followed.
At the same time, Luminous’s organization orchestrates attacks on humans by monsters or rogue vampires.
Then, Church knights or Luminous’s own forces “heroically” repel these threats, boosting the people’s sense of gratitude and faith.
This “scripted salvation” is essentially a managed pump-and-release cycle designed to maintain belief and loyalty.
Interestingly, the Church knights themselves are unaware they are being used this way and believe their missions are purely righteous.
Luminous’s genuine goal is to keep humans alive and stable as both citizens and a food source, not to exterminate or enslave them.
The manipulation is cold-blooded, but it is ultimately aimed at mutual survival in a dangerous world.
Night Garden and Life Underground
After Night Rose’s destruction, Luminous builds a new vampire metropolis called Night Garden directly under Ruberios.
It serves as both a fortress against Veldora and an ideal environment for vampires, away from sunlight.
Many of her top vampires, including the Transcendents, choose to live there.
They continue to oversee the complex balancing act between vampire survival, human prosperity, and the secrecy of Luminous’s true identity.
Ultimate Skills and Authority over Life and Death
Luminous originally possessed the unique skill Lustful One (Lust).
After Granbell’s betrayal and Hinata’s apparent death in Volume 11, her grief and rage awaken an ultimate skill: Lustful King Asmodeus.
Lustful King Asmodeus is a top-tier, demon-type ultimate ability linked to the sin of Lust.
It grants her dominion over life and death, allowing precise control over living organisms’ life force.
With this power, she can easily repair any physical damage, no matter how severe.
As long as a soul remains, she can fully resurrect the dead, restoring them in both body and mind.
Her finishing sword technique manifests as a single crimson sword flash, “Requiem for the Dead Memory End.”
This strike severs the target’s life force, forcing instant death regardless of physical durability.
When Hinata is killed by Granbell, Luminous’s awakening to Asmodeus allows her to reach into Chloe’s Infinite Prison, where Hinata’s soul has been drawn, and rescue it.
Thanks to this, Hinata is brought back from true death, preserving Luminous’s cherished “right hand.”
Later, as the story progresses beyond the provided text, Asmodeus further evolves into two separate ultimate skills: Virtuous King Ahura Mazda and Sinful King Angra Mainyu.
These reflect the dual aspects of her power and nature—salvation and punishment.
Divine Magic and the Secret of Faith and Grace
Luminous is a master of holy or divine magic.
She personally developed and operates the system known as the “Secret of Faith and Grace.”
In this system, when believers invoke holy magic, they symbolically offer magicules to Luminous as their god.
In exchange, she temporarily lends them part of her authority over spiritual particles, allowing them to wield powerful divine spells.
This effectively lets her “distribute” fragments of her abilities across thousands or millions of followers.
The more believers she has, the greater her total computational power and overall strength become, as she uses their brains as an expanded processing network.
This is the real reason she values faith so highly: belief in Luminous literally equates to processing power and magical throughput.
When she shares this system with Rimuru, she does so on the condition that Tempest accepts her researchers and cooperates in future exchanges.
Her techniques also include:
Death Blessing: an invisible divine hand that kills any target lacking sufficient mental resistance, turning them into corpses without warning.
Embrace Drain: by hugging someone, she absorbs their life energy (magicules) while sending their pain and negative sensations back into them in a feedback loop.
Kiss of Love: a secret ritual where she directly infuses her overflowing life energy into human retainers, drastically extending their lifespan.
Vampire Physiology and Transcendence
As a vampire of the highest class and a Transcendent, Luminous has completely overcome the typical vampire weakness to sunlight.
She can act freely at any time of day, regardless of sun exposure.
Her innate vampire skills include irresistible Charm and high-level Self-Regeneration.
She also possesses overwhelming physical ability, speed, and durability, befitting a Demon Lord.
Many of her elite subordinates are also Transcendents who no longer need blood to live.
This reduces the strain on human populations and gives Luminous more flexibility in how she manages her realm.
Her primary weapon is Night Rose, a mythic sword bearing the name of her lost capital.
With it, she channels her life-and-death powers and executes techniques like Memory End with terrifying precision.
Chloe Aubert / the Hero Chronoa
When Veldora destroyed Night Rose, the one who became Luminous’s ally in that darkest moment was the Hero who would later be known as Chloe Aubert and Chronoa.
From then on, the two formed a deep bond that lasted for two thousand years.
Due to Chloe’s time travel, Luminous spends around a thousand years with her as a friend and confidant.
She comes to hold feelings for Chloe that go beyond simple friendship.
Chloe eventually ends up sealed in a holy coffin.
Luminous obsessively visits the coffin, touching it directly with her bare skin even though the holy power burns her body, yet perceiving the pain as bliss because she can feel Chloe’s presence.
In the manga and anime, this is shown in an even more intense way, with Luminous depicted as fully naked as she embraces the sacred coffin.
Regardless of medium, it underlines just how extreme and devoted her feelings are.
When Chloe falls into danger in Ruberios due to the attack by Granbell and Yuuki Kagurazaka, Luminous fights with everything she has.
With Rimuru’s help, she succeeds in ensuring Chloe’s survival, fulfilling one of her deepest promises.
Hinata Sakaguchi
Hinata Sakaguchi is Luminous’s “right hand” and one of the people she values most in the world.
Their relationship mixes loyalty, mutual respect, and Luminous’s slightly possessive affection.
Luminous relies on Hinata’s rationality and strength to manage the human side of Ruberios.
At the same time, she treats Hinata as a treasured friend, often expressing feelings that are closer to romantic than purely platonic.
When the Seven Days Clergy’s manipulation leads to Hinata’s death in battle, Luminous is driven into fury and despair.
Her anguish triggers the evolution of Lustful One into Lustful King Asmodeus, and she uses her new power to snatch Hinata’s soul back from Chloe’s Infinite Prison.
After resurrecting Hinata, Luminous firmly cuts off the corrupted elements in her organization.
This marks a major turning point where she stops overlooking human failings in her name and accepts the hard responsibility of cleaning up her own house.
Rimuru Tempest
Rimuru Tempest is someone Luminous has known about for a long time due to Chloe’s time-travel stories.
She knows he is key to the world’s future and to Chloe’s survival and happiness.
From a distance, she closely monitors his actions, ready to intervene if he goes off the rails—or if others threaten him.
When she finally meets him at Walpurgis, it is under the guise of Roy’s maid, but she is actually judging his character and potential.
Luminous quickly comes to recognize Rimuru’s absurd capabilities and chaotic but ultimately benevolent nature.
Rimuru, in turn, understands her personality well enough that he even attempts to “bribe” her with benefits during important negotiations, and she cheerfully plays along.
Their relationship evolves from wary observation to strategic cooperation and finally genuine trust.
The 100-year non-aggression treaty and cultural exchanges are proof that she considers him a reliable partner, not merely a dangerous wildcard.
Veldora Tempest
Veldora Tempest is, in Luminous’s eyes, her greatest natural disaster and eternal nuisance.
He destroyed Night Rose, annihilated her original kingdom, and nearly erased her people.
Because of this, she holds a deep-seated hatred and calls him all kinds of insulting nicknames.
Veldora, for his part, barely remembered her at all and thought their clash was just a bit of “fun,” which only infuriates her further.
Realistically, Luminous knows she cannot win a direct fight against Veldora if he is serious.
She believes someone must properly discipline him, and when she sees Rimuru gradually reining Veldora in, she grudgingly approves.
After establishing diplomatic relations with Tempest, she occasionally fights alongside Veldora for shared goals.
Even so, she continues to treat him roughly, often moving past anger into exasperation at his idiotic behavior.
Louis Valentin and Roy Valentin
Louis Valentin is one of the “Three Lords” and serves as the Holy Emperor of Ruberios, acting as Luminous’s permanent proxy.
Roy Valentin, his counterpart, was outwardly recognized as the Demon Lord who opposed the Luminous faith.
Originally, Louis and Roy were a single being created by Twilight Valentine.
Because the original was too violently unstable, Luminous split him into two: Louis, the calmer twin, and Roy, the more aggressive one.
For 1500 years, Roy played the “evil Demon Lord” to keep believers fearful and faithful, while Louis maintained the holy government.
By staging conflict between “Demon Lord Roy” and “Holy Emperor Louis,” Luminous cemented the illusion of good vs. evil under her control.
After Walpurgis, Roy returned ahead of Luminous and encountered an intruder.
Arrogantly ignoring his weakened state due to the new moon, he underestimated his opponent, stepped on a “landmine” of sensitive issues, and was killed.
His death destabilizes the Three Lords’ delicate balance and intensifies arguments between Louis and Gunther Strauss about how to manage the country.
Luminous regrets the loss but moves forward, adapting to a world where Roy can no longer fill the role he once played.
Gunther Strauss
Gunther Strauss is one of the Three Lords and Luminous’s butler as well as Night Garden’s leader.
He is fiercely loyal and acts as her shield and manager of the underground vampire society.
After Roy’s death, Gunther clashes more often with Louis over how to stabilize Ruberios and maintain their systems.
Even so, both remain devoted to Luminous, each trying in their own way to defend her interests.
Granbell Rosso
Granbell Rosso was once a Light Hero who repeatedly clashed with Luminous, making him a long-standing rival.
Eventually, he came to agree with the world that Luminous was trying to build and joined her as “Sunday Master Gran,” leader of the Seven Days Clergy.
They share a complicated bond, seeing each other as rivals and comrades who understand one another deeply.
Luminous also knew and liked his wife, Maria, adding another layer to their connection.
However, after Maria is killed by human scheming, Granbell falls into madness and despair.
He ends up betraying Luminous’s ideals, orchestrating catastrophic events including attacks on Tempest and Ruberios.
In the end, Luminous confronts him in a fierce battle.
Granbell is defeated and dies, entrusting the future of humanity—and the world—to Luminous and her hero ally.
Twilight Valentine
Twilight Valentine, also called the God Progenitor and King of Twilight, is Luminous’s creator and “father.”
He was entrusted by Veldanava with the mission of creating intelligent life on the world.
Over time, Twilight’s experiments turned monstrous, crossing moral lines and causing widespread harm.
Luminous came to despise him for his cruelty and disregard for life.
Ultimately, she killed him herself, ending the threat he posed.
Even original demons are said to be appalled by how far Twilight’s madness had gone.
Three Lords like Louis, Roy, and Gunther were all created by Twilight as part of his “works.”
This legacy leaves mixed feelings among those who knew both Twilight and Luminous.
Dagruel
Dagruel is an elder Demon Lord who predates Luminous’s rise.
His territory borders Ruberios, consisting mainly of a barren wasteland.
For a long time, he repeatedly eyed Luminous’s prosperous lands, bringing them into periodic conflict.
Their personal relationship is strained, in part because Dagruel was a close friend of Twilight Valentine.
Dagruel does not entirely approve of Luminous’s decision to kill Twilight.
Nonetheless, the two maintain a mutual baseline of trust, recognizing each other as long-lived neighbors and powers that cannot be ignored.
Ultima
Ultima, formerly known as the unnamed Original Violet, is a primordial demon who frequently clashed with Luminous in the past.
Her sphere of influence overlapped with the territories of both Luminous and Dagruel, keeping them in recurring conflict with her.
Because of this, both Luminous and Dagruel see Ultima as an old, troublesome enemy.
These hostilities are even depicted in the OVA “Coleus’ Dream.”
When Luminous later learns that Ultima, alongside the other primordials, has joined Rimuru’s faction under Diablo, she is genuinely shocked.
The idea that one of her long-time nemeses now serves her ally is difficult for her to process.
Adalman
Adalman is a former cardinal of the Luminous Church who fell victim to the schemes of the Seven Days Clergy.
He died as part of their machinations, lost his faith, and later resurrected as an undead.
Realizing her responsibility in allowing the clergy’s corruption to fester, Luminous feels the need to make amends.
She grants Adalman the secret technique Day-Night Reversal as a form of atonement.
This technique is later modified and developed into Holy-Demonic Reversal by Adalman.
It becomes one of his signature abilities as he moves forward under Rimuru’s banner.
Furamea and Others
Furamea is a rabbitman girl who stars in the spin-off The Ways of the Monster Nation.
Under certain circumstances, Luminous becomes her namer.
Despite that, Luminous habitually teases her or exerts heavy pressure whenever they meet.
As a result, Furamea tends to keep her distance, intimidated by Luminous’s overwhelming presence.
Luminous also maintains a quiet, friendly relationship with Sylvia, the wind spirit race progenitor and mother of Elmesia El Ru Sarion, the empress of the Magic Kingdom Sarion.
Unlike Jahil, another of Twilight’s disciples, Sylvia bears no grudge toward Luminous for killing Twilight.
Jahil, the progenitor of the High Human race and Twilight’s top disciple, loathes Luminous for slaying his beloved master.
This animosity adds another long-term enemy to Luminous’s already complicated web of relationships.
