Azashiro Kenpachi is the eighth "Kenpachi" and a former captain of the 11th Division. He is famous for his cold personality and his powerful zanpakuto, Urozakuro, which is always released in its Bankai form. He believes Shinigami should only serve as emotionless gears in the world, and he once tried to forcefully change all souls so no Hollow would ever appear again. This act got him imprisoned in Muken, the same endless prison where Sousuke Aizen is also held. He hates unnecessary fighting and clashes with others, especially the later Kenpachi, Kenpachi Zaraki.
Azashiro Kenpachi looks like a slim young man with a calm and emotionless expression. He wears the captain's cloak of the 11th Division. At first glance, he seems very quiet and almost empty of feelings. He usually doesn’t carry a sword, since his zanpakuto is always in its Bankai state.
Azashiro Kenpachi acts almost like a robot. He dislikes anything wasteful and always looks for the best way to solve problems with perfect efficiency. He completely forgets about emotions and only cares about the mission. Azashiro thinks that both humans and shinigami should act like machinery, keeping the balance in the world without showing feelings.
He does not care about the title "Kenpachi" and only took charge of the 11th Division because it allowed him to show his full power. He believes any emotion or sense of pride that interrupts the mission is pointless.
Despite this, some captains recognize his dedication to his job. Even though he is all about reason, deep down Azashiro can notice when someone is kind, like Don Kan’onji, and finds it impressive.
He dislikes Kenpachi Zaraki for holding back in battle, thinking it is wasteful. Azashiro will not even acknowledge Zaraki as a true "Kenpachi."
Azashiro used to be called Azashiro Soya, and he was born into the noble Azashiro family, well-known for their skill in demon arts. Other nobles became jealous of his family's wealth and power. Even though they did not do everything right, they were blamed for crimes they did not commit, and his whole family was killed.
Azashiro and his older sister were forced to fight Hollows as a cruel show for others. Before dying, his sister used her own spell in a desperate attempt to save him, but died anyway. The person who promised to spare their lives broke his word, and Azashiro barely survived. When he faced death, he met his zanpakuto spirit Urozakuro in his mind.
He then took revenge on the nobles who ruined his family, but never felt any better. He remembered his sister's last words—to become a strong shinigami—and wandered alone from then on.
About 250 years ago, Azashiro challenged Kuruyashiki Kenpachi, the previous Kenpachi, and won after a tough fight. He became the new captain of the 11th Division and held the title of eighth Kenpachi.
However, soon after, he was framed for another crime. During his arrest, he defeated hundreds of shinigami, but when he realized the Zero Division would come, he surrendered to avoid useless fighting. He was given a sentence of 19,500 years and sent to Muken, the prison for the most dangerous criminals.
Azashiro mainly uses demon arts (kido) in battle and can use even the highest-level spells with ease. He can control artificed bodies and can shoot dozens or even hundreds of high-level kido spells at once.
He uses his zanpakuto, Urozakuro, which is always in its Bankai form. This special Bankai allows him to merge with any material or living thing around him, control them, and know everything happening inside his fused zone. His power is said to rival even Sousuke Aizen’s Kyoka Suigetsu.
His fusion ability makes it seem he cannot be hurt or even killed as long as he maintains Bankai. He can become part of the air to move instantly, make blades out of it to attack, and modify or control things and people.
But his power comes with costs:
- Some special attacks can do extreme harm to him.
- If he tries to merge with someone with a strong will, it causes much pain to both sides.
- If he ever stops his Bankai and switches to shikai, he must wait one full year to use Bankai again.
His shikai is a perfectly shaped Japanese sword. When in this form, he can focus the spiritual energy he absorbed and unleash a super powerful attack, said by Sousuke Aizen to be one of the strongest attacks in Bleach.
- He dislikes Kenpachi Zaraki, refusing to accept him as Kenpachi.
- He sees Don Kan'onji’s kindness as something special, because Azashiro himself cannot act that way.
- Other captains, like Kyoraku Shunsui and Sajin Komamura, respect his sense of duty even if he seems cold.
- Azashiro became a captain not through the entrance tests, but by defeating the previous Kenpachi in a duel.
- His zanpakuto spirit Urozakuro appears to him as a talkative, seductive woman, the opposite of his own personality.
- He skipped all the normal steps to reach Bankai, awakening it in the moment his sister died.
- While in Bankai, he can never grow or get stronger, but he can use his power without end and never ages.

Becoming Kenpachi
Azashiro avenged his family and, after wandering for some time, challenged Kuruyashiki Kenpachi in a one-on-one battle. He won and became the captain of the 11th Division, earning the title of the eighth Kenpachi.
His Tragic Past
He was once a noble and skilled in demon arts. But because other nobles were afraid of his family’s power, they framed and destroyed his clan. His only surviving family member, his sister, died saving him during a cruel show. This tragedy awakened Urozakuro’s Bankai without the usual process.
The Soul Modification Plan
Driven by the belief that all waste and sadness should be erased, Azashiro tried to use his power to change the soul society forever. He wanted to redesign human souls to stop Hollows from ever being born. He did this even though the Soul Society's leaders forbade it.
Imprisonment in Muken
When the Zero Division came to stop him, he decided to surrender to avoid unnecessary fighting. He was sentenced to almost 20,000 years in the endless prison Muken.
Breaking Out and Major Battles
Later, Azashiro escapes from Muken after getting special threads from Roka Paramia. He plans to use them to change humanity and face powerful enemies: Kenpachi Zaraki, Cien Granz, and Don Kan'onji.
Powers Unleashed
In battle, Azashiro uses hundreds of high-level spells and fuses with large spaces, controlling and modifying the battlefield and everyone in it. He can even escape from Muken using his abilities.
Azashiro is one of the most unique and powerful captains in Bleach, known for his cold logic and overwhelming Bankai ability. He stands out as someone who rejects all personal feelings and wants to make the world perfectly efficient, no matter what the cost.
