A former Imperial Navy officer from the countryside, Wave is a loyal and earnest soldier who is often bewildered by the eccentricities of the capital and his comrades in the Jaegers. He is a rival and friend to Tatsumi, sharing a bond over the struggles of dealing with their respective teams, and his story is deeply intertwined with his desire to protect his comrade, Kurome.

Wave is the token sane man in a squad full of eccentrics and often finds himself being the straight man to their bizarre antics. This is why he quickly bonded with Tatsumi, as they both shared the burden of being surrounded by oddball teammates.
He is incredibly loyal and deeply cares for his comrades, operating on the belief that one must always repay their debts and support their allies. Among the Jaegers, many of whom harbor dark pasts, Wave stands out as one of the few who fights with a pure desire to protect the people, holding a firm belief that this is the true duty of a soldier.
Even after learning about the darkness within his teammates, he remains committed to helping them as a friend. He grieved for Bols after his death and was deeply concerned for his family, and when confronting Night Raid, he considered them all "his comrades' killers," even including Seryu's biological Teigu, Coro, in that sentiment.
His kind nature is so apparent that even his enemy, Tatsumi, couldn't help but think of him as a "good guy." He is particularly close with Kurome and Run, with whom he often partners on missions.
Despite his gentle heart, he can fly into a rage when his friends or their loved ones are harmed. While initially tormented by the Empire's corruption, he is inspired by Run's goal to "change the Empire from within" and begins studying politics to achieve it.
Hailing from a rural area, Wave was a member of the Imperial Navy before being scouted by Esdeath to join the Jaegers. His countryside origins are immediately obvious to those around him, making him a bit of a "country bumpkin" in the sophisticated capital.
He loves seafood and even brought a large bag of fresh fish as a gift on his first day with the Jaegers. He is also a skilled cook, though his dishes almost always feature some kind of fish or seafood. Wave often prefaces his statements with "A man of the sea..." which leads Kurome to tease him for "smelling of the tide."
Wave is a master of close-quarters combat, primarily relying on a powerful hand-to-hand fighting style. His skills are formidable; he overwhelmed an Incursio-clad Tatsumi in their first encounter, even though Tatsumi was focused on defense.
During the mission to protect Bolic, he single-handedly took on three Teigu users—Akame, Mine, and Lubbock. He managed to nullify Murasame's deadly curse, dodge all of Mine's shots, and tear through Lubbock's wires.
Even without his Teigu, his physical strength is immense, capable of sending a grown man flying several meters with a single punch. When using Grand Chariot, his ultimate move is a powerful kick called "Grand Fall," which can inflict serious damage even on another Teigu user.
His potential was praised by both General Esdeath, who stated his strength was "already perfected," and General Budo. However, he has a recurring misfortune of being knocked away or separated from his team during crucial moments, leaving him with immense guilt over the deaths of comrades like Bols.
Teigu
Demon Armor: Grand Chariot
This is the successor model to the armor Teigu Incursio, used by Bulat and Tatsumi. Grand Chariot is a full-body armor that grants its user immense power and defense in close-range battles.
Mastema
Later in the story, Wave inherits this Teigu from Run. This makes him the only known character in the series to wield two Teigu simultaneously, but this feat comes at a great cost, leaving him with irreversible damage to one of his internal organs.
Kurome
As fellow members of the Jaegers, Wave and Kurome spend a great deal of time together. It's no exaggeration to say that Wave's personal journey is inseparable from his relationship with her, as his primary motivation becomes to save her from her past and her failing health. Their close bond is a fan favorite, often tagged as "WaveKuro."
Tatsumi
Wave considers Tatsumi his rival, yet the two also share a unique friendship. They find common ground in their mutual struggle of being the most "normal" members of their respective, highly eccentric teams.
A Country Boy in the Capital
Wave arrived in the Imperial Capital from a rural post in the Imperial Navy. He was immediately baffled by the strange behavior of his new comrades in the Jaegers and the general oddities of the capital, sensing that something was deeply wrong. Despite his confusion, he resolved to fulfill his duty as a soldier to repay a debt to his benefactor.
A Moral Compass in Chaos
As he witnessed the Empire's corruption and the atrocities committed by Wild Hunt, Wave began to question whether he was truly fighting for the right cause. He eventually solidified his resolve to "change the Empire from within." After Wild Hunt brutalized and murdered Bols's wife and daughter and attempted to assault Kurome, Wave was overcome with fury. He challenged Syura to a bare-fisted duel, and with General Budo presiding, he overcame Syura's tricky fighting style and emerged victorious.
A Vow to Protect
During one of Akame's assassination missions, Wave intercepted and fought her. She managed to damage Grand Chariot by repeatedly striking the same spot, but she ceased her attack before finishing him. Afterward, Akame explained her tragic past with Kurome and their deep-seated conflict, leading Wave to vow that he would be the one to save Kurome.
Manga Storyline
When Kurome set out for a final duel with Akame, Wave tried to stop her but was knocked unconscious. After waking, he located her by spotting Run, who then entrusted him with his Teigu, Mastema. Using two Teigu at once, a forbidden act, Wave fought past Tatsumi's attempts to stop him and reached Kurome. He confessed his feelings, convinced her to stop the duel, and destroyed her Teigu, Yatsufusa, freeing her from its curse. The two then deserted the army and traveled to a sanctuary known as "God's Secret Hot Spring." He briefly returned to help Tatsumi protect civilians from the rampaging Emperor during the final battle. After the revolution, Wave suffered severe aftereffects from using two Teigu, requiring a long recovery, but chose to spend his life with Kurome, who had little time left.
Anime Storyline
In the anime, Wave fails to stop Kurome from facing Akame and is forced to watch her die in the duel. Wracked with conflict over how to use his strength, he is bluntly told by Akame, "Don't pick up a weapon if you lack resolve." This steels his determination to fight not for the nation, but for its people. He joins Tatsumi in the battle against the rampaging Emperor. Wave survives the revolution and remains in the military to help rebuild the country.
- Despite being a major character, Wave never got a solo cover on any of the 15 manga volumes, unlike Esdeath, Kurome, and Seryu from the Empire's side.
- He did, however, receive a special write-up book cover as a bonus with Gangan Joker magazine, making him one of the few male characters, alongside Tatsumi, to be featured on a cover.
- On art sites like Pixiv, illustrations of him are most often paired with Kurome rather than solo.
- "No need to thank me for the follow-up, we're a team, right?"
- "Don't you dare touch my comrades with your filthy hands."
- "The Jaegers will hunt down any rabble that disturbs the peace!!"
- "That's enough!! I'll listen if it's about saving Kurome, but I won't hear a word about killing her!!"
- "No matter the circumstances... saying that killing your own sister is a form of salvation... You're insane."
