Character Setting

Edit

Gueira is a Black Whistle and one of the "Prayers" serving Bondrewd, the White Whistle delver known as the Lord of Dawn, in *Made in Abyss*. He was a tall man, even surpassing Bondrewd in height.

He possessed a cheerful and lighthearted personality, always speaking in a casual tone. He referred to Bondrewd as "Master" and previously served as Prushka's tutor, becoming the Prayer closest to her.

"Is it really alright, Master, to let them be so free?"

Gueira is a prominent character in *Made in Abyss*, voiced by Kawada Shinji. He was a member of Bondrewd's exploration team, known as the "Prayers."

His rank within the team was that of a Black Whistle.

His End

Gueira met his demise while accompanying Bondrewd in pursuit of Nanachi and the "Relic of the Abyss," Reg. They ventured into the colony of the giant venomous scorpion, Kasshougashira.

There, he and other Prayers were brutally used as shields by Bondrewd, leading to his death. His body was completely dissolved by a massive amount of corrosive fluid, losing all human form, and his internal organs were devoured.

Personality

Gueira is a peculiar character, as his name and personality were only revealed posthumously through Prushka's recollections. Among the Prayers featured in the story, he, Gallice, and Bidou (whose name isn't explicitly mentioned) are highlighted.

His casual demeanor and calling Bondrewd "Master" suggested he held an executive position within the Prayers. He was also responsible for Prushka's upbringing in the past.

In the original manga, after Prushka was brought to the Forward Operating Base severely injured, Gueira remarked, "It's too much trouble to use her like this" or "It's better to crush her." This implies his awareness and involvement in Bondrewd's human experiments. However, once Bondrewd decided to raise Prushka, Gueira began treating her like a normal child.

He displayed very human behavior, such as talking to Prushka about delicious Abyss food. He even asked her if she was making one for herself when she was distributing paper Black Whistles to other Prayers with destroyed brains doing simple tasks (nicknamed "Stick-Habu old men").

Despite these human traits, he was ultimately one of the Prayers who literally dedicated his life and body to Bondrewd.

After Riko, Reg, and Nanachi visited the Forward Operating Base, Gueira fell under the strong control (brainwashing) of Bondrewd's special grade relic, the "Spirit-Severing Machine." He then became silent and clung to Bondrewd like a ghost. He participated in Reg's dismantling in an abnormal and unsettling state.

Movie Version

In the movie adaptation, Gueira's presence was even more pronounced than in the manga, serving (posthumously) as the only Prayer with meaningful dialogue apart from the Garden's Prayers. The scene where he saw Prushka injured was changed to him saying, "It's too cruel to use her like this," showing more consideration for her.

Furthermore, the scene where he gifts Prushka her trademark helmet-like hat was meticulously depicted, enhancing his role.

Analysis

Bondrewd's cruelty is highlighted by his attempt to make Gueira dismantle Prushka and by treating him as a mere pawn. He was sent into a dangerous situation without significant armament.

However, Prushka's comment, "They (referring to the Prayers) seemed strange today," suggests that Gueira might have been hastily brainwashed and deployed for combat to intercept and capture the "Relic of the Abyss." After being brainwashed, he literally acted as Bondrewd's (the parent unit) arms and legs.

Under this brainwashing, his movements became sluggish, leading to uncharacteristic failures for a Black Whistle, such as easily letting Riko's group escape.

*Note: According to audio commentary viewers, it was revealed that Bondrewd intentionally used the Kasshougashira (during the confrontation with Riko) to kill Gueira, his close executive Prayer, to perfect Prushka's love for him. However, caution is advised as Lord Tsukushi, the creator, often makes spontaneous remarks about future developments in such talks.*
