Adalman is an undead sorcerer and former high-ranking cleric who becomes a key ally of Rimuru Tempest in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, evolving from a cursed undead guardian into the Holy-Demonic Twelve Guardian King known as the Nether Spirit King (Gehenna Lord).
Adalman is a high-tier undead (originally a Wight, later a Wight King and finally a Light Spirit Skeleton) who commands gigantic armies of the dead.
He wears pure white ceremonial robes once reserved only for high-ranking clergy of the Luminous Church, over a skeletal body.
In the web novel version, he was an independent undead in the Great Jura Forest who came seeking Rimuru Tempest after hearing of the new Demon Lord.
In the light novel version, he first appears as one of Clayman’s “Five Fingers,” blocking Shuna, Souei, and Hakurou during the Puppet Nation Jistav campaign that runs parallel to Walpurgis.
Originally, he was a human prince of a small country under the Holy Empire of Ruberios and a devout believer in Luminous Valentine.
After his betrayal and death at the hands of the Seven Days Clergy, he revived as an undead due to his friend Gadra’s reincarnation spell and became bound to the cursed land of Jistav, serving as its guardian for a thousand years.
Eventually he is defeated and freed by Shuna, then voluntarily submits to Rimuru, joins the Monster Country Tempest, and becomes a Dungeon Guardian.
Over time he regains and surpasses his former powers, ultimately awakening as a mid-ranked holy-demonic spirit and being appointed one of the Holy-Demonic Twelve Guardian Kings.

Early Life as a Prince and Cleric
Adalman was born as a prince of a small country under the Holy Empire of Ruberios and grew up as a devout follower of Luminous Valentine.
He distinguished himself as an exceptionally faithful and capable believer, achieving numerous merits and rising all the way up to the rank of cardinal in the West Holy Church.
He mastered advanced holy magic to a very high degree and studied many other schools of magic as well.
Through harsh training, he reached the realm of a “sage” (hermit), standing just one step away from becoming a genuine saint.
Betrayal by the Seven Days Clergy
His strength of will and deep faith made the upper echelon known as the Seven Days Clergy wary of him.
They judged that he might one day discover the true nature and will of God, and feared he could take away their divine favor and influence.
Seeing Adalman as a dangerous element, they plotted to eliminate him.
Under the pretext of “purifying a death-spirit disaster,” they sent him to the western part of the Great Jura Forest near Jistav, a land crawling with undead.
Adalman led his loyal subordinate Albert and a unit of holy knights into this mission.
There, the group was overrun and killed amidst a swarm of undead, allowing the Seven Days Clergy to quietly remove a potential threat.
Accidental Undead Rebirth
Adalman’s friend, the great magician Gadra, had anticipated that the higher-ups might try to erase him.
To protect him, Gadra secretly applied the mysterious divine art “Reincarnation” to Adalman, which would allow him to revive after death.
The spell did work, and Adalman’s life was preserved.
However, because he revived in a land saturated with grudges and miasma, he resurrected not as a living human, but as an undead.
This twist of fate turned him into a Wight, an undead driven by resentment and the remnants of his former self.
His former holy knights and companions also became undead, forming the core of his later undead host.
Thousand-Year Guardian of Jistav
Later, the Demon Lord Kagali (in her former identity, before Clayman’s rise) came to Jistav and turned it into part of her defensive system.
She cursed the land and bound Adalman to it, compelling him to serve as Jistav’s guardian.
For about a thousand years he continued to protect Jistav from invaders, not out of loyalty, but because Kagali’s curse and his attachment to his undead comrades trapped him there.
He considered ending his existence more than once but was unable to do so due to the curse and his responsibility to the fallen knights who now followed him as undead.
When Kagali was defeated by the Demon Lord Leon Cromwell, her position as a Demon Lord was effectively taken over by Clayman.
Adalman, as part of the “asset package” of Jistav, became Clayman’s subordinate.
Clayman’s “Pointing Finger”
Recognizing his power, Clayman elevated Adalman to one of his strongest top executives, the “Five Fingers.”
Adalman received the title “Pointing Finger Adalman” and continued to guard Jistav, now for Clayman’s benefit.
During Clayman’s plot to obtain mass souls by orchestrating the massacre of the Beast Kingdom Eurazania’s citizens, Adalman’s side of the plan was the defense of Jistav.
At the same time, the Monster Country Tempest, under Shuna’s leadership, launched a counteroffensive aimed at Jistav itself.
Battle Against Shuna and Liberation
To stop Tempest’s attack, Adalman used a mist barrier to confuse and mislead the invading team of Shuna, Souei, and Hakurou.
He lured them into a carefully prepared encirclement by his undead army and gradually tightened the noose.
At that point, Adalman was actually stronger than Shuna and the others.
Shuna later acknowledges that if Adalman had fought seriously from the start, she and her group would likely have died.
During their magical duel, Adalman relied on the assumption that, as an undead, he could no longer use true holy magic.
Shuna shattered this belief by demonstrating that even a monster with a pure heart and genuine faith could wield holy magic, despite not being human.
Her words and actions shook Adalman’s convictions, making him realize that his inability to use holy magic was largely a psychological block.
Feeling both ashamed and enlightened, he resolved to end everything in a final act of redemption.
He cast his strongest holy spell, “Disintegration,” intending to self-destruct and purify himself along with his undead army to free them from their curse.
However, Shuna used her Unique Skills “Analyst” and “Creator” to overwrite the spell’s structure, changing it into a new holy spell, “Particle Overdrive.”
This modified spell cleansed his undead forces and broke Kagali’s curse, effectively liberating Adalman and his followers.
They seemed to be annihilated, but in truth they survived, now free from the curse and from their forced duty to Jistav.
Submission to Rimuru and Joining Tempest
After the purification, Adalman and his undead soldiers were no longer bound to Jistav.
Recognizing his defeat and Shuna’s mercy, he chose to surrender to Tempest.
He declared that he wished to swear allegiance to Rimuru Tempest and even worship him as his new god.
He also began treating Shuna as a “priestess princess” serving that god, much to her discomfort.
When Shuna moved to seize Jistav’s castle, Adalman enthusiastically volunteered to guide her, effectively helping Tempest to take over the fortress.
Following the conclusion of Walpurgis, Adalman was formally granted an audience with Rimuru and officially joined Tempest.
On Shuna’s recommendation, he was assigned to the labyrinth (Demon Labyrinth) as one of its Guardians.
At first, he became the floor boss of the 60th Floor.
Temporary Weakening and Re-Evolution
Because of Shuna’s purification and the severing of his connection to Jistav’s leylines, Adalman initially regressed from a Wight King to a lower-level Wight.
This meant that, for some time, he was significantly weaker than in his former prime.
However, the Dungeon’s environment is saturated with the enormous magicules of Veldora Tempest.
By absorbing that dense magical energy and driven by his renewed faith in Rimuru, Adalman steadily regained and then exceeded his past power.
He re-evolved into a Wight King (King of the Wights), effectively returning to his previous rank as an upper-tier undead.
His strength and influence were recognized, and he became one of the “Labyrinth Ten Lords,” bearing the title “Immortal King.”
Promotion to 70th Floor Guardian
The 70th Floor of the labyrinth was originally guarded by the Demon Colossus, a golem created to protect a Demon Lord.
Thanks to his rapid and impressive growth, Adalman was promoted and took over the position of 70th Floor Guardian.
He now commanded his undead armies in a deeper and more crucial part of the Dungeon.
His role became even more important as Tempest prepared for the looming large-scale conflict known as the Great Tenma War.
Holy-Demonic Twelve Guardian King and Awakening
When Rimuru began a program of mass strengthening for his subordinates ahead of the Great Tenma War, Adalman was one of those chosen for major enhancement.
With the help of Wisdom King Raphael (later known as Ciel), his abilities and body were magically “re-engineered.”
He received souls and blessings from Rimuru and awakened from Wight King to a mid-ranked holy-demonic spirit form known as Light Spirit Skeleton.
This awakening significantly boosted both his holy and demonic capabilities and cemented his status as a top-tier combatant.
At the same time, he was granted the Ultimate Gift “Book of the Arcane Path (Necronomicon),” a supreme control-type ability tailored around magic and death.
He was also appointed one of the Holy-Demonic Twelve Guardian Kings, taking the title “Nether Spirit King (Gehenna Lord).”
Reunion with Gadra and Later Recognition
During Tempest’s later confrontations and alliances, Gadra eventually joins Tempest as well.
This leads to an emotional reunion between Adalman and his old friend who once tried to save his life.
Adalman’s explosive growth and achievements, especially his victory over Shinji and his group (from the Empire), are recognized by Rimuru and others.
His successful combat performance is one reason for his promotion to the 70th Floor Guardian position.
Meanwhile, back in Ruberios, the upper leadership bitterly regrets losing such a valuable talent due to internal power struggles.
In stark contrast, the reputation of the Seven Days Clergy continues to plummet even after their deaths, while Adalman’s long series of hardships finally feels vindicated.
Adalman is fundamentally kind-hearted, dutiful, and deeply sincere.
Even after becoming an undead, he chooses to stay with his fallen comrades rather than leave them, leading them as an army so they will not be abandoned.
In his heyday as a human, he was a devout follower of Luminous Valentine and embodied the ideal of a faithful, hardworking cleric.
His progress in magic and spiritual cultivation was built on relentless effort, independent study, and strict self-discipline.
At first, when he appears as Clayman’s subordinate, he speaks and acts like a dignified ruler or high priest.
His tone is solemn and imposing, befitting a skeletal holy man in white vestments commanding a legion of undead.
However, once Shuna’s intervention frees him from Kagali’s curse, his true personality gradually surfaces.
He reveals himself to be surprisingly humorous, talkative, and a bit theatrical, creating a sharp and often comical gap between his grim appearance and cheerful behavior.
He is deeply moved by Shuna’s pure faith and her ability to wield holy magic despite being a monster.
Realizing that he had limited himself by believing an undead could never use holy magic again, he feels ashamed of his own mental weakness.
Adalman also has a strong sense of responsibility.
When he decides to use “Disintegration” as a self-sacrificial move to free his companions, he does so fully prepared to die with them.
After losing faith in the Luminous Church leadership that betrayed him, he no longer feels loyalty toward Kagali or Clayman.
His original Luminous faith had already faded by the time he was bound as an undead guardian.
Upon joining Tempest, he redirects his faith toward Rimuru, treating him as a true god.
Shuna becomes, in his eyes, a “divine priestess” serving that god, and he reveres her with exaggerated formality.
This over-the-top devotion, combined with his dramatic speech and gestures, makes Shuna feel awkward and a bit uncomfortable.
Rimuru himself also finds Adalman somewhat difficult to handle, in a similar way to how he feels about Diablo.
Despite his comedic traits, Adalman is intelligent and capable of carefully laid strategies.
He uses tactics and traps skillfully, both as a battlefield commander and as a Dungeon Guardian.
Overall Combat Style
Adalman is primarily a magic caster, specializing in holy magic and death spirit (necromantic) magic.
He also commands a colossal undead army, using both mass summoning and battlefield control.
Even at the time he first battles Shuna, Souei, and Hakurou—when he is weaker than his peak—he is still technically stronger than them.
Shuna later realizes that if Adalman had been fully serious from the start, her team would have been wiped out.
Most notably, despite his weakened state as an undead, he can still cast “Disintegration,” the ultimate holy spell also used by Hinata Sakaguchi as her trump card.
This demonstrates that his original mastery of holy magic was extremely high.
After becoming Rimuru’s subordinate, he goes through several stages of weakening and re-strengthening.
From a weakened Wight he returns to Wight King level and later awakens as a holy-demonic spirit Light Spirit Skeleton, massively boosting his capabilities.
Loss and Restoration of Holy Magic
Initially, Adalman believes that becoming an undead has permanently taken away his ability to use holy magic.
This belief becomes a psychological seal, and his use of holy magic is limited compared to his living days.
Shuna’s example proves that it is faith and heart—not species—that determine the capacity to wield holy magic.
This realization shakes Adalman and sets the stage for his eventual spiritual and magical restoration.
Later, Rimuru grants him the secret principles of “Faith and Grace,” essentially turning worship of Rimuru into a new, valid holy source.
By taking Rimuru as his object of faith, Adalman regains his holy magic completely and even strengthens it.
Extra Skill: Holy-Demonic Reversal
One of his signature powers is the Extra Skill “Holy-Demonic Reversal.”
This skill was derived from the “Day-Night Reversal” ability that Luminous Valentine gave him as compensation for the injustice of the Seven Days Clergy and reconstructed with the help of the chaos puppet Beretta and Beretta’s Unique Skill “Contrarian (One Who Inverts).”
“Holy-Demonic Reversal” can convert holy attributes into demonic attributes and vice versa.
Adalman uses this to turn his naturally demonic-aligned undead into holy-aligned beings.
As a result, he can bypass the classic undead weakness to holy magic.
In fact, he and his entire army become effectively immune to holy attacks, rendering many enemies’ strongest spells useless.
He then uses “Faith and Grace,” with Rimuru as his deity, to fully anchor and empower his holy magic.
This combination is a massive “rules hack” that turns the usual “holy vs undead” relationship upside down.
Because the effect extends to his entire undead host, large-scale holy bombardments against his forces do almost nothing.
This makes him a nightmare opponent for any holy-based nation or army.
Ultimate Gift: Book of the Arcane Path (Necronomicon)
After awakening as a Light Spirit Skeleton, Adalman receives the Ultimate Gift “Book of the Arcane Path (Necronomicon)” from Rimuru via Wisdom King Raphael.
This ability provides complete control and optimization over his magic, especially death spirit magic.
The Book of the Arcane Path grants him functions such as accelerated thought, universal perception, Demon Lord domination aura, chantless casting, analysis and appraisal, comprehension of all phenomena, mental destruction methods, “Holy-Demonic Reversal” integration, and death control.
It essentially acts as a supreme magical operating system inside his soul.
With this Gift, Adalman can handle enormous spell volumes and complex composite magic without strain.
It also boosts his capacity to command and manage huge numbers of undead simultaneously.
Death Spirit Magic and Undead Army
Adalman uses a variant of spirit magic called death spirit magic (necromantic sorcery).
With it, he can summon, control, strengthen, and reconstruct undead entities.
His main forces consist of his former holy knights, now undead, as well as countless spirits and zombies that once haunted Jistav.
He later adds even more dead from battlefields, significantly expanding his ranks.
His undead army’s typical scale is around 2,000 death spirit knights and about 150,000 death spirit soldiers.
This makes his command comparable to a full-sized national army, and he is skilled at both strategic deployment and trap-based tactics.
Death Spirit Legion Creation (Immortal Legion)
One of his ultimate death spirit spells is a large-area magic known as “Deathless Legion Creation (Immortal Legion).”
Within the affected area, any dead are transformed into part of his undead army.
The spell has a terrifying feedback loop: his undead kill enemies, whose corpses are then converted into more undead, which then kill more enemies, and so on.
This leads to exponential army growth in prolonged battles, fitting the title of a true king of the dead.
Large-Scale Destruction Magic
Adalman can unleash “Tempest Meteor,” a large-scale wide-area spell that calls down more than a thousand meteors on the enemy.
This spell can annihilate entire armies in an instant.
This offensive capacity ensures that he is not only a summoner and commander but also a direct battlefield threat.
Combined with his defensive immunities and army, he becomes a one-man apocalypse engine.
Physical Combat and Fusion with Wenti
Although best known as a caster, Adalman was once a “holy fist master” in his youth, combining holy magic and martial arts.
This background is revealed later in the story when magic alone is not enough against certain enemies.
Faced with an opponent resistant or immune to magic, Adalman unexpectedly fuses with his subordinate Wenti, the Nether Dragon King.
This union transforms him into his younger human form with a powerful physical body.
In this fused state he fights as he did as a living master of holy fists, now enhanced by draconic toughness and undead durability.
While not a permanent form, it allows him to hold off opponents far above his normal level and buy precious time for allies.
Rimuru Tempest
Rimuru Tempest is Adalman’s liege, benefactor, and self-chosen “god.”
Adalman treats Rimuru with almost religious fervor, showering him with grandiose praise and unwavering devotion.
Rimuru, however, feels more bewildered than flattered by this excessive worship.
Adalman’s style of devotion is intense and slightly suffocating from Rimuru’s point of view.
Shuna
Shuna is the one who defeated Adalman and freed him from Kagali’s curse.
She is the catalyst for his return to his true self and new life under Tempest.
Adalman reveres her as the “priestess princess” of Rimuru, treating her as a holy figure who mediates his god’s will.
While Shuna appreciates the fact that he is now an ally, she finds his exaggerated reverence and dramatic speeches overwhelming.
Albert
Albert was once the strongest holy knight of the West Holy Church and Adalman’s close subordinate in life.
After their deaths, Albert becomes a Death Knight and later a skeletal swordsman under Adalman’s command.
Following their conversion to Tempest’s side, Albert regains his former strength and then evolves further into a “Death Holy Knight (Death Paladin).”
He joins the Labyrinth Ten Lords under the title “Death Holy Knight,” standing as Adalman’s shield.
Later, after the Empire campaign, Rimuru grants Albert myth-class equipment and, following Adalman’s awakening, blesses him into a mid-ranked holy-demonic spirit of the flame type, an “Abyss Flame Spiritman.”
Albert obtains the Ultimate Gift “Immortal,” making him a truly unending warrior.
Wenti (Nether Dragon King)
Adalman’s “pet” is a Death Dragon, originally a Dragon Zombie he controlled in Jistav.
This creature combines the overwhelming physical power of a dragon with the near-indestructible immortality of undead.
By entrusting its soul to Adalman, the Death Dragon attains complete immortality, instantly reviving even after being diced by Souei’s threads.
Later, Rimuru names it “Wenti” and grants it the title “Nether Dragon King (Gehenna Dragon).”
Wenti evolves into a Nether Dragon King and even gains a human girl form.
Rimuru also grants Wenti the Ultimate Gift “Eternal,” ensuring she cannot be permanently destroyed.
Wenti often serves as Adalman’s powerhouse partner and, in extreme situations, fuses with him to boost his physical combat ability.
Their bond is both strategic and deeply loyal.
Gadra
Gadra is a legendary great magician and Adalman’s old friend from his human days.
He was the one who cast “Reincarnation” on Adalman, indirectly causing his undead rebirth.
Later, Gadra himself ends up joining Tempest after events involving the Eastern Empire.
This allows the two old companions to reunite and stand together under Rimuru’s banner.
Their relationship highlights a more human side of Adalman, grounded in genuine friendship and mutual respect.
Gadra’s regret about how the reincarnation went wrong is partially eased by seeing Adalman’s new life bear great fruit.
Kumara and Mjurran
Kumara and Mjurran are former members of Clayman’s Five Fingers, just like Adalman.
They share a history of being forcibly bound by curses and manipulated into serving a master they did not truly respect.
After joining Tempest, Kumara and Adalman both become part of the Dungeon’s elite defenders.
Mjurran (formerly enslaved by Kagali’s curse) shares with him the trauma of having their will overridden and the relief of finally gaining freedom under Rimuru.
Diablo
Diablo and Adalman are often described as similar types from Rimuru’s perspective.
Both show extreme, sometimes unsettling devotion to Rimuru.
However, where Diablo’s devotion is calm, elegant, and quietly intense, Adalman is more loud, theatrical, and priest-like.
Rimuru worries a little when these two zealously loyal followers operate in the same space.
Luminous Valentine
Luminous Valentine is the true God of the Luminous Church and the one Adalman originally worshiped.
While she is not directly responsible for his suffering, the corruption of her church and the Seven Days Clergy’s treachery led to his downfall.
After learning about what happened, Luminous expresses regret and offers Adalman a form of atonement.
She grants him the skill “Day-Night Reversal,” which later becomes the basis for “Holy-Demonic Reversal.”
This act acknowledges the injustice done to him and subtly helps him on his new path under Rimuru.
It is a rare moment of divine apology in the setting.
Other Connections
Adalman’s exaggerated, ceremonious attitude causes some comrades in Tempest to feel a mix of amusement and secondhand embarrassment.
Still, his results on the battlefield and his reliability gradually earn him widespread respect.
Former colleagues in Ruberios later hear of his role as one of Rimuru’s top guardians and regret driving him away.
Within Tempest, however, he is considered an indispensable part of their strategic core.
In the spin-off manga Clayman Revenge, which explores a time-loop scenario for Clayman, Adalman appears again as Clayman’s subordinate.
Here, his characterization leans more openly into his natural “playful gentleman” personality from the start.
As the defensive specialist of Jistav, he is often left at home or stuck with support and security duties.
He complains about the curse-based control from Kagali, but in this timeline Clayman himself is more considerate, so Adalman holds no personal grudge against him.
When the character Sasha, Gadra’s disciple and a female sage, is introduced, Adalman finally becomes more involved in the main story.
He has known Sasha since she was a child, and she once declared she would marry him when she grew up, showing how attached she was to him.
At one point, Clayman instructs Adalman to train to overcome the undead weakness to sunlight.
Adalman takes this hilariously literally and begins doing enthusiastic sunbathing in an aloha shirt.
Clayman is baffled, but the training bizarrely works: Adalman successfully gains high resistance to sunlight.
Later, it is revealed that his undead subordinates have also adopted this routine, casually playing volleyball and baseball outside in broad daylight.
This sight of undead enjoying outdoor sports shocks Clayman and others.
Adalman gets scolded, but the results are undeniable.
Because the defensive role is usually uneventful and overpowered visitors like Milim Nava render his defensive barriers useless, Adalman and his subordinates are often bored.
Their sunbathing and recreational activities are partly a way to kill time.
Eventually, Sasha and Adalman reunite as colleagues, with Sasha effectively becoming his subordinate.
Clayman originally suggested that Sasha use Adalman as her subordinate because of how much he and his undead seemed to be slacking off, but Adalman desperately blocked this plan, and the arrangement ends with Sasha working under him instead.
Adalman’s archetype is similar to the classic “Lich” in fantasy role-playing games: a powerful sorcerer who becomes an immortal undead to gain greater power.
However, unlike a typical lich, he did not choose undeath; he became a Wight due to a failed resurrection in a cursed land driven by grudges.
Because he died painfully, revived in resentment, and was bound by someone else’s curse, his situation matches the classic conditions of a Wight.
His evolution into a Wight King, and later a holy-demonic Light Spirit Skeleton, makes him a unique hybrid of “lich king” and “holy undead” archetypes.
The term “Wight King” itself has roots in fantasy gaming, famously appearing in early titles like Dragon Quest.
Adalman’s portrayal draws from this tradition but adds layers of faith, betrayal, and redemption.
In the anime, his voice actor Tomokazu Sugita initially delivers Adalman with a gruff, aged, and authoritative tone.
At first, it is hard for many viewers to recognize him as Sugita.
As the story progresses and Adalman becomes more threatening, the voice shifts into a more familiar villainous style associated with Sugita’s roles.
After his liberation and personality reveal, his performance becomes openly comedic and unmistakably “Sugita,” matching the character’s talkative, theatrical nature.
