Mercy Haku

Dispatched out of deep concern by Maria Theresa, Mercy Haku served not only as an Austrian ambassador to France but also as a dedicated tutor and mentor to Marie Antoinette. He repeatedly scolded her with advice that may have felt harsh to her, but all of his words stemmed from a sincere and loyal desire for Marie Antoinette's future wellbeing. There is a scene where he urges Marie Antoinette to compose a letter of condolence upon her mother's death, and after this moment, he vanishes from sight. However, clues to his enduring presence linger: after the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, Hans Axel von Fersen advises Marie Antoinette to “return to Mercy Haku”; just before the outbreak of the revolution, Marie Thérèse anxiously remarks that “Mercy Haku has a scary expression.” These moments reveal that he was always a shadow at Marie Antoinette's side, watching over her. After the revolution erupted, Mercy Haku went into hiding and ultimately escaped to Belgium.
