Dreyfus is a tall adult man characterized by long, wavy black hair and an unshaven beard in his prime years as a Great Holy Knight.
After regaining his freedom, he cuts his hair short and trims his beard, giving him a tidier, more disciplined appearance.
He has powerful leadership qualities and strong charisma, commanding the respect of other Holy Knights.
His swordsmanship is said to surpass even that of his half-brother Zaratras, the previous Great Holy Knight.
On the surface, Dreyfus is dutiful, serious, and deeply committed to his role as a knight.
However, he harbors a long-standing inferiority complex toward his talented elder brother, which makes his heart more fragile than his imposing exterior suggests.
He is capable of compassion and vulnerability, as seen when he falls into deep despair after hearing the false news of his son Griamore’s death.
He is not a cold-blooded warrior; he is a man who struggles with guilt, doubt, and conflicting loyalties.
Before the tragedy involving The Seven Deadly Sins, he was on friendly terms with them and even drank with the group.
In the present timeline, though, he initially regards The Seven Deadly Sins as enemies to be defeated in the coming Holy War, arguing that the “Guiding Hands of Light” should be the Holy Knights.
He has known Hendrickson since childhood, and their bond is deep enough that Dreyfus ultimately sacrifices his own body to save him.
Despite this bond, he grows suspicious of Hendrickson’s secretive and dangerous behavior in the shadows.
Dreyfus is an all-rounder with balanced magic, physical power, and spirit, each rated at 1000.
He fights primarily as a swordsman, combining powerful sword techniques with ranged magical attacks.
Magic: Break
Magic Name: Break
This magic releases shockwaves that pierce through virtually any object.
It is effective even against opponents whose combat class is more than ten times higher than his own, making it a deceptively dangerous ability.
Lakan
Name: Lakan
By thrusting out his sword, Dreyfus generates a highly penetrating shockwave from the tip that pierces the enemy.
This is his core application of Break and a signature finishing technique.
Lakan Fan Volley
Name: Lakan Fan Volley
Dreyfus fires multiple Lakan shockwaves at once in a fan-like spread.
He uses this technique in Four Knights of the Apocalypse, showing he still retains both skill and precision even in old age.
Heavenly River Hell-Blade
Name: Heavenly River Hell-Blade
Dreyfus condenses his total magic into his sword and releases it all at once as a massively enhanced Lakan.
The power is so great that even higher-ranked demons admit that taking a direct hit would be catastrophic.
This move is his ultimate trump card, boasting extraordinary destructive power.
However, it requires a significant charging time and consumes a large amount of magic, leaving him vulnerable if it fails.
Sword Techniques (Physical Skills)
Even without magic, Dreyfus is an elite swordsman whose techniques are feared across Liones.
He uses classical yet overwhelming sword strikes to dominate opponents.
Collapsing Strike
Name: Collapsing Strike
He swings his sword upward with full force, sending the enemy flying.
It is a brute-force technique meant to break guard and create distance.
Penetrating Thrust
Name: Penetrating Thrust
Dreyfus dashes forward at high speed while performing a thrust that pierces the opponent’s body.
It is designed to finish foes in a single, direct charge.
Flowing Strike
Name: Flowing Strike
He swings his sword downward with all his strength, the opposite trajectory of Collapsing Strike.
This move is about crushing opponents and driving them into the ground with sheer impact.
Magic: Full Size
Magic Name: Full Size
This magic originally belonged to Fraudrin of the Demon Clan, who possessed Dreyfus’s body.
Full Size allows the user to enlarge their body to a massive scale, increasing reach and power.
When Griamore was on the verge of being killed, Dreyfus awakened this ability for the first time in order to protect his son.
Although originating from Fraudrin, the awakening symbolizes Dreyfus’s own will overriding the demon’s control to save his family.
Background as a Great Holy Knight
Dreyfus is one of the two leading Great Holy Knights of Liones, paired with Hendrickson.
He is recognized for swordsmanship that surpasses Zaratras, along with overwhelming leadership and charisma.
Ten years before the main story, driven partly by jealousy toward his elder brother Zaratras, Dreyfus conspires with Hendrickson to assassinate him.
They frame The Seven Deadly Sins for the attempted coup d’état, turning them into wanted criminals.
In the aftermath, Dreyfus becomes increasingly withdrawn, often shutting himself away in his room.
His actions in this period appear inconsistent: sometimes ruthless, sometimes guilty and hesitant.
Battle in the Capital with Diane, Gowther, and King
When The Seven Deadly Sins enter the capital, Dreyfus is one of the first top Holy Knights to respond.
He teleports to the center of the city to confront Diane.
He overpowers Diane in a one-on-one battle, clearly outclassing her compared to other Holy Knights who had fought her.
However, he fails to capture her after Howzer and Guila, influenced by Diane’s past actions and her protecting of Zeal, decide to defect and help her escape.
After Gowther arrives, Dreyfus’s mind is trapped inside a mental world due to Gowther’s ability.
Yet he unexpectedly retaliates from within, breaks free, and proceeds to defeat Gowther, revealing that his mental resilience is far from ordinary.
He then attempts a surprise attack on King, but this time he is defeated.
Persuaded by Howzer, he accepts a temporary ceasefire with The Seven Deadly Sins.
Arrest and Escape
Following the ceasefire, Margaret Liones testifies that Dreyfus was involved in the assassination of Zaratras, forcing Dreyfus to admit his crime.
He is arrested and taken to the underground cells.
During the transfer, Dreyfus suddenly kills all members of the “Dawn Roar” unit except Slader and Simon.
He also defeats Howzer, leaving him half dead, and escapes custody.
Later, when Hendrickson appears in a red demon form and confronts Griamore, Dreyfus arrives at the scene.
He fights alongside his son, but in the chaos he accidentally injures Elizabeth Liones with a misplaced attack.
Shocked by his mistake and exhausted from using his magic, he loses his composure.
Hendrickson uses his “Acid” ability to dissolve Dreyfus, and he is believed to have died.
Suspicion and Investigation
The people closest to Dreyfus, including Gilthunder and Howzer, are deeply troubled by his recent behavior.
He seems unlike the knight they once admired, swinging between guilt, cruelty, hesitation, and self-loathing.
They convince Griamore, who still believes in his father, to investigate Dreyfus’s private room.
There they discover books related to the Demon Clan, which Dreyfus should have had no reason to possess.
This reveals that, despite openly opposing Hendrickson in some matters, he had secret ties to the Demon Clan.
Their suspicion grows, setting the stage for the true nature of Dreyfus to be revealed.
Dreyfus Appears to the Dying Hendrickson
Far from Liones, during the kingdom’s decisive battle, Hendrickson lies on the brink of death.
At that moment, the supposedly dead Dreyfus appears before him.
Hendrickson, in a hazy state, confesses and repents for his sins.
Instead of condemning him, Dreyfus encourages him and gives him his own blood, an inhuman act that rapidly restores Hendrickson’s strength.
Afterwards, Dreyfus deliberately leaves a handkerchief stained with Elizabeth Liones’s blood on a nearby tree.
He then departs, watching Hendrickson from behind as Hendrickson realizes he has everything needed to resurrect the Demon Clan and laughs in madness.
On Dreyfus’s face, ominous markings of the Demon Clan appear.
This confirms that the Dreyfus everyone has been seeing is, in fact, under the influence of a demon.
The Past: Danafor Ruins and the Deal with Fraudrin
Ten years earlier, Dreyfus and Hendrickson visited the ruins of the fallen kingdom of Danafor on a mission.
There they encountered Fraudrin, a demon wounded in battle with Meliodas sixteen years prior.
Fraudrin needed a human vessel to revive the Demon Clan and attempted to possess Dreyfus’s body.
Dreyfus, however, possessed such a strong will that he resisted and repelled the demon’s mind.
To bypass this, Fraudrin took Hendrickson hostage.
Dreyfus, unwilling to risk the life of his childhood friend, agreed to surrender his body in exchange for Hendrickson’s safety.
From that point onward, Fraudrin controlled Dreyfus’s body and impersonated him within Liones.
Dreyfus’s true personality and actions were buried under the demon’s performance of “Dreyfus the human.”
Explaining His “Inconsistency”
All the mental instability, hesitation, guilt, and seemingly irrational decisions attributed to Dreyfus in the main story are actually Fraudrin acting through his body.
This includes his erratic behavior after Zaratras’s death and his drastic swings between coldness and remorse.
Even the moment when Gowther sealed Dreyfus’s mind in the mental world becomes clear in hindsight.
Dreyfus revived unexpectedly because there was another consciousness in his body: Fraudrin.
The chaotic mix of actions—admitting guilt, fleeing after killing other knights, confronting Hendrickson despite supposedly being an ally, and accidentally hitting Elizabeth Liones—were all part of Fraudrin’s complex plans and manipulations.
Dreyfus himself was essentially a captive spirit watching from within, unable to fully act.
The Real Dreyfus’s Character
In reality, Dreyfus is a knight of high integrity and conviction who values honor, duty, and his comrades.
He does carry genuine feelings of inferiority toward Zaratras, but his will is strong enough to resist a demon’s brainwashing.
Initially, he truly fights against Fraudrin’s control.
However, once Hendrickson is threatened, he willingly yields his body to protect his longtime friend.
Even while imprisoned within his own mind, Dreyfus remains active spiritually.
During key moments, he tries to influence Fraudrin and eventually even begs him to spare Hendrickson’s life when guiding him toward the resurrection of the Ten Commandments.
Separation from Fraudrin
During the mid-stage of the Holy War, Fraudrin, still in control of Dreyfus’s body, attempts to massacre the resistance forces in Liones.
At this critical moment, Zaratras, who has been temporarily resurrected, sacrifices all of his remaining life force to unleash the purification ability “Purification.”
This powerful attack finally separates Dreyfus and Fraudrin.
Dreyfus is freed from the demon’s control and returns to his own body as an independent human again.
Fraudrin later dies at the hands of Meliodas.
Only then does Dreyfus finally become truly free, with the demon who destroyed his life gone for good.
Resignation and Atonement
Even though he was manipulated, Dreyfus does not excuse his involvement.
He believes that the consequences of his actions, while possessed, are too grave to be erased.
When the time comes to appoint a new Great Holy Knight in the absence of Gilthunder, Dreyfus declines the position.
Hendrickson also refuses, and the two choose not to return to the highest command post.
Instead, Dreyfus opts to live as a simple soldier—one more fighting force among many.
He serves as a guardian for Margaret Liones on her journey to search for the missing Gilthunder.
During this period, he maintains his short-haired, neatly groomed appearance, a visual symbol of his new humble resolve.
He devotes himself to protecting others rather than leading from above.
Relationship with Vivian
In the aftermath of the Holy War, Dreyfus has an unexpected interaction with Vivian.
When she is stabbed and collapses, Dreyfus tends to her and helps her.
This simple act of kindness causes Vivian to develop a fierce and obsessive affection for him.
Although this one-sided crush becomes a comedic element, it also shows Dreyfus’s gentler side in caring for former enemies.
Retirement and Role in Four Knights of the Apocalypse
After the Holy War, Dreyfus eventually retires from front-line Holy Knight duty.
He becomes a swordsmanship instructor dedicated to training the next generation.
He also helps at Hendrickson’s “medicine hall,” supporting his old friend’s new life as a healer and researcher.
They continue to work together, this time on the side of peace and restoration instead of war and conspiracies.
In Four Knights of the Apocalypse, Dreyfus is now an older man, around 63 years old.
He suffers from chronic back pain and is often not in condition to fight at full strength.
Nevertheless, when facing Arthur Pendragon, he manages to unleash Lakan once again.
This shows that, despite age and injuries, the core of the legendary Great Holy Knight Dreyfus remains as sharp as ever.
