Character Setting

Edit

Sentarou is a significant figure in Ai Enma’s tragic past, serving as both her childhood friend and a key to her fate, whose actions echo through generations.

Sentarou appears exclusively in flashbacks and supernatural visions.

He has a deep, inextricable connection to the Shibata family line, as both Ai Enma’s cousin and childhood companion.

Sentarou is considered the ancestor of Hajime Shibata and Tsugumi Shibata.

His choices shaped not only Ai Enma’s destiny but also the dire story of their entire village.

Sentarou lived with his father, forming a small family unit.

When Ai Enma was chosen as a human sacrifice for a bountiful harvest, Sentarou secretly rescued her at her parents’ heartfelt request.

However, after her secret rescue, the village experienced continuous crop failures, causing the community to blame Ai’s survival for their misfortune.

For six years, Sentarou hid Ai Enma in a shrine to keep her safe.

Their bond was a mix of sibling closeness and young friendship, complicated by the heavy burden of secrecy.

One day, while helping Ai Enma bathe outside the shrine, villagers discovered her.

Sentarou’s father and the villagers forced him, against his will, to throw soil onto Ai Enma as she was buried alive.

Paralyzed by guilt and fear as Ai Enma cursed them in despair, Sentarou could not save her and fled the scene.

That night, Ai Enma rose from her grave, her grief and anger igniting the destruction of their entire village.

Sentarou escaped, consumed by remorse, and later became a prosperous candy seller.

To atone for his tragic role, Sentarou established Nanakodou Temple, praying for Ai Enma’s soul and the other girls sacrificed before her.

His acts of repentance became a foundation for spiritual ritual in the region.

In modern times, the Nanakodou Temple is run by someone unrelated to Sentarou’s bloodline.

Although Ai Enma later burned the temple’s main hall, the current head priest survived, fleeing in panic as the flames consumed the building.

Sentarou is depicted as gentle but burdened by loyalty and guilt.

Despite his love and devotion, he is ultimately a tragic figure, unable to stand against the pressure of his village, and haunted by the consequences.

His story reveals the complex interplay of fear, love, and remorse, painting him as a deeply human character whose actions shaped centuries of suffering and redemption.

Childhood friend, cousin, and reluctant betrayer of Ai Enma.

Ancestor of Hajime Shibata and Tsugumi Shibata, leading to generations tied to the curse.

Son in a two-person household; later, founder of a temple dedicated to atonement.

Sentarou’s actions directly caused the event that transformed Ai Enma into Hell Girl.

His name lives on in spiritual history, tied to both tragedy and the sincere quest for forgiveness.

He is remembered as the catalyst for the supernatural cycle central to Ai Enma’s existence.
