Boxxo

Boxxo is the protagonist of Reborn as a Vending Machine. He was a self-proclaimed vending machine enthusiast in his previous life, pouring most of his salary into various machines. After dying in an accident involving a vending machine, he finds himself reincarnated in another world as an actual vending machine near a lakeshore. With no ability to move or speak freely, he communicates using pre-recorded vending machine phrases. Named Boxxo by Lammis, he uses the world's currency to earn points, which he needs to resupply products, power himself, and unlock new vending functionalities. Despite being immobile, Boxxo uses his in-depth vending machine knowledge and quick thinking to contribute to his companions. Over time, he becomes less interested in returning to a human body, embracing his new life and role.

Boxxo literally appears as a vending machine, with no human features. Depending on his adaptations, he can take multiple forms—ranging from a standard drinking vending machine to models selling noodles, snacks, or even flowers. His emotional expressions are portrayed via digital eyes as a comedic device for the audience, but to other characters, he looks like an ordinary vending machine.

Boxxo is thoughtful, resourceful, and deeply caring about those who help or accompany him, especially Lammis. His passion for vending machines blends with a generous and protective spirit. Boxxo has little hesitation in putting himself at risk for others, sometimes drawing concern from his friends. He adapts quickly to unusual situations and is highly inventive, using his vending machine skills to solve problems and support his group.

In his former life, Boxxo was a Japanese man obsessed with vending machines, viewing them almost as treasures. His selflessness and attachment to these machines led to his demise: he tried to shield a flying vending machine during an accident, resulting in his death. Upon waking, he discovered he'd been reincarnated as a vending machine in a dungeon-like world. Human memories and knowledge remained with him, allowing him to recognize and recreate an array of vending machines and products from his old world.

Boxxo can only sell items he had purchased in his previous life and can transform into different vending machine types, such as:

Lammis: The person who names and saves Boxxo. He is devoted to her and values her deeply.
He forms strong bonds with other dungeon residents, assisting them by providing food and creative solutions using his products.
Although Lammis hopes Boxxo will revert to being human, he becomes increasingly passive about returning to his old self.

Boxxo's vending machine knowledge is encyclopedic.
His ability to "speak" is limited to pre-recorded lines like "Welcome" (for affirmation) and "Too bad" (for negation), but later he learns to creatively splice phrases for more nuanced conversation.
Trash from purchased items can be made to disappear at his discretion.
His favorite thing after vending machines is cats.
His popularity inspired others in the world to copy his vending concept—sometimes with odd or humorous results.

Death and Rebirth

Boxxo dies in a traffic accident after trying to save a vending machine. He reincarnates as a real vending machine in another world, with his memories and knowledge intact.

Survival in the Dungeon

Unable to move or speak freely, Boxxo relies on Lammis and other locals, supplying them with food and goods in exchange for coins. He gradually establishes a reputation as a mysterious but benevolent magical device.

Evolving Functions

Through accumulated points, he expands his capabilities. Boxxo acquires items such as magical barriers, transformation into alternate vending machine types, and even the ability to manage environmental hazards (like extreme temperatures or damage).

Facing Danger

Although he cannot fight directly, Boxxo uses inventive methods to protect his allies, such as creating chemical reactions among the items he dispenses or deploying surprise goods during emergencies.

Changing Desires

Once strongly desiring to return to human form, Boxxo’s attachment wanes as he becomes more integrated into his new life. Even when presented with the possibility of a wish (using the Dungeon Master’s coin), Boxxo is reluctant compared to Lammis, who wishes earnestly for his return.

Comedic and Emotional Touches

Boxxo sometimes displays expressions via digital "eyes" for the audience’s benefit, though in-universe, he remains just a machine. He feels temperature and pain, indicated by his reactions during severe impacts, and his internal lighting dims during sleep or deep thought.

Attempts have been made to imitate Boxxo's vending techniques, including selling lunch boxes in a human-sized box.
The rapid adoption of his unique vending concepts creates both admiration and amusing trouble among the world’s inhabitants.
