Character Setting

Edit

The Fox Devil is a powerful but temperamental devil in the manga series "Chainsaw Man," known for forming contracts with multiple Devil Hunters and manifesting as a gigantic multi‑eyed fox that attacks with bites and slashing limbs.

The Fox Devil is a devil whose name is invoked with the command "Kon" and fox‑shaped hand signs to summon parts of her body for combat.

Despite being called a fox, her manifested form is a towering monster over an estimated ten meters in length, with a vulpine body and a head covered in multiple grotesque eyes.

Her main body is said to reside in Kyoto, and only parts of her, such as her head or limbs, are summoned to battlefields elsewhere.

She is voiced by Yuko Kaida in the anime adaptation.

The Fox Devil is considered relatively friendly toward humans compared to many other devils, which makes her a popular partner among Devil Hunters in Japan.

Her contracts are especially common among Public Safety Devil Hunters, including recruits, because her power is strong while the payment she demands is comparatively affordable.

The Fox Devil is generally cooperative with humans and is unusually willing to form multiple contracts at the same time.

However, her friendliness has strict limits, and she is easily offended if something displeases her.

She is notably picky about appearance and is explicitly described as a "face connoisseur" who favors attractive men.

Only men she finds handsome are allowed to summon her head, which is her most devastating and prestigious attack form.

Average‑looking male contractors are typically restricted to summoning only her legs or feet for blunt attacks.

She does not contract with women, and all her known contractors are male.

Her temperament is capricious and demanding.

If she is displeased—by taste, injury, or an affront to her preferences—she may refuse to answer summons or will perform only the bare minimum required by her contract and then immediately withdraw.

From her speech and behavior, she is presented as female.

She shows strong likes and dislikes in terms of prey, and distasteful experiences can leave her with a lasting aversion that affects future battles.

The Fox Devil’s power revolves around partial summoning of her body to deliver overwhelming single strikes.

To activate her, a contractor forms a specific fox‑style hand sign and calls out "Kon" along with the target they want attacked.

Contractors allowed to use her head form a hand sign representing a fox’s head.

Those restricted to her legs or feet form a sign resembling a fox’s front paws.

When her head is summoned, it appears with incredible speed and bites down on the target with enough power to kill most devils or humans instantly.

Victims often die before they have any idea what has happened, turning her attack into a near‑instant execution.

When only her legs or feet are allowed, she delivers devastating blunt or slashing strikes with her gigantic paws.

These attacks can crush or hurl normal opponents in a single blow.

Each summoning results in only a single attack, after which the Fox Devil’s manifested part vanishes.

If the target evades or blocks the attack, the contractor must perform the summoning ritual again, creating an exploitable interval for crafty or fast enemies.

In terms of cost, the Fox Devil demands parts of the contractor’s body as payment every time she is summoned.

She usually asks for skin or bundles of hair, biting off or consuming the offered part as a condition of her service.

Because the required sacrifice is relatively small compared to the destructive power she provides, her contract is considered extremely cost‑effective among Devil Hunters.

This favorable balance of risk and power is a major reason she is widely used as a "standard" contracted devil for mid‑tier hunters.

However, her effectiveness drops drastically against enemies that are not standard devils or humans.

She shows an intense distaste for certain unusual beings—especially hybrids like the Katana Devil and characters like Reze—and may refuse to fully devour them even when ordered.

The Fox Devil maintains multiple simultaneous contracts, primarily with Japanese Public Safety Devil Hunters.

Due to her body’s presence in Japan and Public Safety’s control over devil activity, her contracts appear to be effectively limited to Japanese nationals within that organization.

She is known to contract only with men.

Even within that limited pool, only those she personally finds handsome are given access to her head.

Known contractors include:

Aki Hayakawa – Granted use of the Fox Devil’s head.

As a relatively handsome and capable Devil Hunter, he receives preferential treatment and can summon her most lethal biting attack.

Hirokazu Arai – Contractor details are not explicitly specified, but his ordinary appearance suggests he could only summon her feet or legs.

He represents the typical "rookie" Devil Hunter profile who relies on the Fox Devil as a basic but respectable combat option.

Nomo – Allowed to summon her legs for single‑hit attacks.

His usage emphasizes the Fox Devil’s role as a common support devil among rank‑and‑file hunters.

Public Safety Devil Hunter Division 2 Vice‑Captain – Granted use of her head, indicating that higher‑ranking and more distinguished men are sometimes approved for full head summoning.

This underscores how selective she is about granting her best attack.

Nakamura – Restricted to her legs or feet.

His fights highlight the limitations of contractors who do not meet her "beauty standards."

These contracts illustrate her tiered access system: handsome men get the head, ordinary men get the legs, and women get nothing.

This hierarchy directly affects a hunter’s combat potential when relying on her.

The Fox Devil first appears when Aki Hayakawa arrives as backup in a battle where Denji is struggling against the Leech Devil.

Aki calmly forms the fox hand sign, calls "Kon," and the Fox Devil’s head instantly manifests and bites the Leech Devil, killing it in one chomp and showcasing her power as one of the series’ earliest contracted devils.

Later, during Aki’s confrontation with the Katana Devil (often called Samurai Sword), he again summons the Fox Devil’s head to eat the enemy.

The Fox Devil does bite down on the Katana Devil, but because he is a human–devil hybrid, she finds his taste repulsive and receives a severe internal counterattack that injures her.

Deeply offended by both the taste and the injury, she becomes disgusted with Aki’s usage of her.

As a result, she stops answering his summons entirely, effectively terminating their practical cooperation even though the contract technically still exists.

In subsequent arcs, other Devil Hunters also summon the Fox Devil, but her results become increasingly underwhelming as the overall threat level in the story escalates.

She has her leg attacks dodged by Reze (the Bomb hybrid), illustrating how single‑strike summons can be ineffective against agile or high‑tier enemies.

In one battle, she bites down on Reze and then abruptly abandons the fight, stating that she "hates this taste" without even properly informing her contractor.

She simply withdraws, leaving the human fighters in a worse position and highlighting how her temperament can be as dangerous as the enemy.

As more terrifying foes appear—such as weapon hybrids and hordes of living dolls—her once impressive strength starts to look modest.

The narrative increasingly pits her against enemies that normal devils cannot handle, making her failures more common.

During the battle over Denji’s heart, the Fox Devil is summoned again and briefly shines by smashing through large numbers of dolls in one sweeping attack.

However, the dolls quickly adapt, climbing her legs and evading subsequent blows, which neutralizes her effectiveness and returns her to a position of relative helplessness against specialized threats.

In a meta sense, the Fox Devil functions as a "standard‑issue" devil power for side‑character Devil Hunters.

Because "Chainsaw Man" is notorious for killing off minor characters quickly and brutally, the devils associated with those characters—including the Fox Devil—tend to rack up a lot of failures and anticlimactic exits despite having strong abilities on paper.

Overall, the Fox Devil is portrayed as a formidable yet increasingly outdated power in a world where the stakes and enemy types escalate beyond what traditional devils can manage.

Her combination of beauty bias, temper, and single‑hit limitations makes her both memorable and unreliable, especially as the series moves into more extreme and supernatural territory.
