Kana Minami is the lively middle sister in the Minami household and one of the main sources of trouble throughout the story.

She is introduced early on as something like the "national representative of idiots," which captures both her recklessness and her comic role.

Even so, Kana is not simply foolish.

She also has the instincts of a natural schemer who can transform everyday life into an event, usually because she is always looking for whatever seems funniest.

Her appearance is especially recognizable because of her long black twin-tails.

At one point, when only her head was sticking out from under a kotatsu, Chiaki Minami and others compared her to a stag beetle hiding inside it.

She is usually called Kana or Kana-chan.

Akira Minami calls her Kana-san, while Fujioka calls her Minami.

Kana is bright, active, and constantly in motion.

She loves jokes and pranks, and she regularly drags everyone around her into the confusion she creates.

Within the Minami family, she fills the role of the troublemaker almost perfectly.

A large share of the incidents in the story begin with her, and Chiaki Minami often dismisses her simply as a fool.

Still, Kana is not disliked.

She is charismatic in her own way, gets along with Haruka Minami's and Chiaki Minami's friends, and is almost always surrounded by people.

She often gives bizarre answers even to riddles simple enough for elementary school children.

Because of that, she can come across as a bit of an airhead.

At the same time, when something catches her interest or promises fun, her mind becomes surprisingly sharp.

In those moments, she can think quickly and act with impressive cunning.

Kana's academic performance is weaker than that of Haruka Minami and Chiaki Minami.

She has been shown scrambling at the end of summer vacation and generally does not score especially well on tests.

That said, she is not portrayed as a hopeless failing student.

Rather than being a constant bottom-ranker, she sits in an awkward middle ground where her results are simply not very impressive.

Her unpredictability shows up here too.

If someone tells her what topics are likely to appear on a test, she may end up scoring even higher than the very person who gave her the advice.

That contradiction is part of her charm.

She can seem foolish one moment and oddly brilliant the next.

Kana is not as good at cooking as Haruka Minami, and she is fully aware of that herself.

She was initially an extremely bad cook.

Over time, however, she improved.

She eventually became capable of making proper food, including curry, and at least handling boiled noodle dishes.

She is also a fan of the Hiroshima Carp baseball team.

This is one of the few clear personal preferences attached to her outside her daily mischief.

Another unusual talent of hers is dressing boys as girls.

She turned Makoto into "Mako-chan," which she proudly described as a perfect creation, and later did the same with Akira Minami as "Aki-chan."

Kana has a close but chaotic relationship with her sisters.

Haruka Minami is the dependable older sister, while Chiaki Minami often acts as the sharp-tongued observer of Kana's nonsense.

Although she is socially popular and constantly interacting with others, Kana is very oblivious when it comes to her own love life.

In that respect, she resembles Haruka Minami.

Fujioka has feelings for her and has effectively confessed to her both indirectly and directly.

Kana, however, never realizes what is happening.

Part of the reason is that Chiaki Minami once filled her head with misleading information.

As a result, Kana completely misread the situation.

In one especially famous misunderstanding, she interpreted Fujioka's feelings as if a "soccer boss" were challenging her to a one-on-one fight.

That absurd misunderstanding became one of the defining jokes of their relationship.

When Fujioka first appeared, Kana was thrilled to receive what was actually a love letter.

That reaction suggests that she may have liked his appearance, at least on some level.

Kana's signature hairstyle is her black twin-tails, which currently fall below her shoulders.

It is also stated that her hair used to be shorter in the past.

Normally she presents herself in a casual, energetic way that matches her personality.

However, when she lets her hair down and dresses up, she can look surprisingly beautiful.

This contrast is part of what makes her memorable.

Beneath the noisy troublemaker image, she can appear strikingly attractive.

Kana is one of the most visually and narratively prominent members of the Minami family.

Despite being the middle sister, she often stands out more than either Haruka Minami or Chiaki Minami.

She appeared on the cover of the very first volume of the original manga, even though she is not the eldest or youngest sister.

That placement reflects how central she is to the series' comedic identity.

She was also featured solo in the ending sequence of the first and final episodes of the anime continuation.

In that ending, she is shown walking along railway tracks as the scenery changes from episode to episode.

In the final episode's last shot, a figure who appears to be an older future version of Kana is shown.

That image gave the ending a slightly reflective and mysterious tone.

Kana's behavior often makes her seem like the human engine of the story's daily disasters.

If a normal day suddenly turns into an incident, there is a good chance she is responsible.

She combines childish foolishness with flashes of tactical brilliance.

That balance is what makes her feel less like a simple comic idiot and more like a chaos-loving genius.

Her popularity inside the story mirrors her prominence outside it.

Even when she causes trouble, people continue to gather around her.
