A Meister whose body houses the weapon Ragnarok after Medusa Gorgon, Crona's own mother, replaced all of the character's blood with Black Blood. Known as the "Demon Sword," Crona is a child of unknown gender with an androgynous appearance and clothing.
Crona is noted for an androgynous look, making it difficult to determine the character's gender.
Crona has a very slender build and stands at a height of approximately 158cm.
After reuniting with Medusa, Crona develops a unique, androgynous charm.
One chapter cover, which depicts a partially nude Crona, hints at a slender, feminine figure.
Crona is introverted, withdrawn, and suffers from extreme shyness, often struggling with how to interact with others.
This is reflected in a common catchphrase, "I don't know how to deal with..."
When receiving orders from Medusa, Crona's standard reply is "Got it, understood."
Normally speaking in a timid and frightened manner, Crona's tone can suddenly become harsh when stress levels peak, usually due to Ragnarok's bullying.
Due to a childhood of abusive brainwashing by Medusa, Crona has always craved love.
This unstable mental state, steeped in loneliness and madness, found stability after fighting and befriending Maka.
As a testament to this dark past, a poem Crona wrote at the DWMA was so bleak it even depressed the usually boisterous Black☆Star.
Despite this timid nature, Crona's personality shifts dramatically in battle, becoming fierce and almost unhinged.
Crona is the biological child of the witch Medusa Gorgon.
Medusa performed experiments on Crona, replacing the child's blood with Black Blood and fusing the demon weapon Ragnarok into the body.
This was all part of Medusa's research into the madness wavelength, using Crona as the test subject.
Crona holds complex feelings for Medusa, a mixture of deep-seated fear and a desperate desire for a mother's affection and protection.
As a Meister, Crona fights in tandem with the internal demon weapon, Ragnarok, utilizing the unique properties of Black Blood.
Scream Resonance
This is the Soul Resonance technique used by Crona and Ragnarok.
Ragnarok's mouth, located on the sword's blade, emits a deafening shriek that causes the blade to vibrate at high speeds, increasing its cutting power enough to damage even a weapon form like Soul Eater.
- Screech Alpha: Crona unleashes a shockwave along the ground that takes the form of a large, screaming monster's mouth, which "bites" its target.
- Screech Beta: An upward slash boosted by the scream's power, allowing Crona to lunge forward and slice a target in two.
- Screech Gamma: A high-level resonance where the blade itself transforms into the monstrous shape seen in other Screech attacks, unleashing a relentless flurry of slashes that are difficult to escape.
- Screech Delta: A new technique developed after achieving Madness Fusion, firing multiple smaller Screech Alpha projectiles from Crona's three swords.
Demon Sword "Narak," "Impurity," and "Darkness"
This is a new power gained after Crona fuses with the Black Clown.
A pair of Ragnarok's arms sprout from Crona's back, wielding two new swords while Crona holds a third.
- Demon Sword Narak: A thin blade with a mouth on its guard, wielded by Ragnarok's right arm.
- Demon Sword Impurity: A single-edged sword with a jagged blade, wielded by Ragnarok's left arm.
- Demon Sword Darkness: A cleaver-shaped blade with a mouth on its flat side, wielded by Crona's own right hand.
Black Blood
The cornerstone of Crona's abilities, created by Medusa.
It grants Crona incredible power and can be hardened to nullify most physical attacks, though the character still feels the impact's damage.
This defense is vulnerable to attacks that directly strike the soul, like those from Black☆Star or Stein. The blood can also be hardened to instantly seal wounds.
- Bloody Needle: Sharp needles are fired from droplets of Black Blood, whether they are in the air, on the ground, or from a wound. This allows for surprise and delayed attacks.
- Bloody Slicer: By slitting the wrist, Crona can swing an arm to launch a flying slash made of blood, often used as a feint.
- Bloody Lance: A massive cone of Black Blood is launched at an opponent. If destroyed, it shatters into a counter-attack of countless needles.
- Bloody Coat: Crona creates a thin but incredibly durable wall of Black Blood capable of blocking even a Death Scythe's attack.
Mad Blood
This is Crona's simplest, yet most dangerous technique, acquired after Madness Fusion.
Crona unleashes a mass of Black Blood filled with immense madness, which consumes and dissolves anything it touches, transforming victims into a black sphere.
This attack was powerful enough to engulf the city of Moscow.
Furthermore, the sphere of Mad Blood emits a madness wavelength that can corrupt the minds of those who get too close.
Thorns of Black Blood
The ultimate form of Crona's Black Blood, achieved after the emotional trauma of killing Medusa.
The blood can now be shaped into thorny vines for both offense and defense, sharp enough to cut through Maka's glove on mere contact.
Its deadliest feature is the "Mismatched World" effect: the thorns disrupt the soul wavelength of anyone they touch, making it impossible for Meisters and Weapons to resonate and fight together. However, it cannot break the bond of a strong family connection.
- Rose Thorns Storm: Crona creates a massive storm of thorny vines that rampage and attack everything in the vicinity.
- Thorn Defense: A defensive wall of thorns is erected to block incoming attacks.
Medusa Gorgon: Crona's mother and creator. She subjected Crona to a lifetime of abuse and manipulation. Crona feared Medusa but also longed for her love, a conflict that ended when Crona killed her in a fit of rage.
Ragnarok: The Demon Sword fused with Crona's body. He acts as Crona's weapon but also frequently bullies and torments the Meister.
Maka Albarn: Crona's first true friend. Maka's kindness helped stabilize Crona's fragile mind, and Crona became deeply attached to her. Even after Medusa erased Crona's memories, the feelings for Maka remained, ultimately serving as Crona's salvation.
Marie Mjolnir: Crona appeared to have a slight crush on Marie. However, due to Marie's status as a former Zombie, Crona found it difficult to interact with her, stating a dislike for the undead.
Asura: Crona absorbs the Kishin Asura to gain ultimate power but is instead consumed by his overwhelming madness. Crona's final act is to use the Black Blood to seal Asura within the moon.
Crona's gender is deliberately left ambiguous throughout the story.
There are moments that hint toward both possibilities: Crona blushes about talking to girls, but reactions to Ragnarok's harassment are more typically feminine.
In the English version of the manga, the pronoun "he" is used for Crona. The translator's notes explain this was a choice to avoid the impersonal "it."
The "Thorns of Black Blood" ability to disrupt soul wavelengths is very similar to a technique Medusa used in the anime. It's believed the manga author may have "reverse-imported" this idea from the anime adaptation.
- "I don't know how to deal with people..."
- "It's not fair... You still have the 'love' you made me throw away."
- "I did everything you told me to do! I threw it all away!"
- "Let's meet again, Maka."
Early Encounters
Crona is first introduced as an antagonist under Medusa's command, defeating Maka and Soul in their initial battle.
Later, during the plot to revive the Kishin, Crona fights Maka and Soul again. However, the fight ends not with a victory, but with a form of "reconciliation" after Maka uses her Soul Perception to see into Crona's tormented heart.
Life at the DWMA
Following the battle, Crona is taken into the care of the DWMA for protection and observation.
There, Crona experiences friendship for the first time, becoming very close with Maka and slowly beginning to open up, even smiling.
Return to Medusa
This peaceful period ends when a revived Medusa contacts Crona, mentally manipulating the child into becoming a spy.
Forced to act against the new friends, Crona makes Marie Mjolnir swallow a listening device, an act that causes Crona immense guilt and secret tears. Medusa then erases all of Crona's memories of the DWMA and Maka, twisting the child's personality to be even more unstable and an enemy once more.
Descent into Madness
As part of Medusa's experiments, Crona fights Black☆Star's team and later attacks the DWMA's Eastern European branch.
There, Crona uses the horrific "Mad Blood" to kill Tsar and Fyodor, turning an entire Ukrainian city into a giant black sphere of madness.
Shortly after, a moment of kindness from Medusa causes Crona to snap, enraged that Medusa still possessed the love she had forced Crona to abandon. Crona brutally murders Medusa, and with this final anchor gone, the Black Blood within Crona reaches its terrifying "completion."
The Final Arc
Now a mass murderer, Crona is placed on Lord Death's execution list, with the order given to the members of Spartoi.
Crona and Maka reunite, but Maka's desperate pleas can no longer reach the madness-consumed child, who heads to the moon to absorb the Kishin Asura.
The Moon War and Sealing
During the final battle on the moon, Crona successfully absorbs Asura, becoming the new Kishin as Medusa had planned.
However, Crona is immediately overwhelmed and consumed from within by Asura's pure madness. Trapped in Asura's soul, Crona despises the lingering desire to see Maka again.
Maka, using the Black Blood, enters Asura's soul and convinces Crona that this desire is proof of the ability to trust others. Regaining confidence, Crona proposes a plan: to use the Black Blood and the magic tool "BREW" to seal Asura and all the madness within the moon. The Black Blood expands to envelop the entire moon, sealing Crona inside as well. Facing this fate without fear, Crona's final thought is of a promise to a friend: "Let's meet again, Maka."
Anime Version
In the anime's alternate storyline, Crona's redemption arc is more direct.
Crona accompanies Marie to Medusa's hideout to rescue Stein, openly defying Medusa. After being gravely wounded by the witch, Crona is saved when Maka defeats Medusa, allowing Crona to be truly free and become a permanent ally to the group.
