Pulcinella is a mysterious jester-type NPC whose creator is unknown.

He was designed with the purpose of making many of Nazarick’s inhabitants happy and lives by that guiding principle.

Within the Great Tomb of Nazarick, he is recognized as a gentle and compassionate being, standing out sharply against its generally cruel denizens.

He openly declares that he wants to “make everyone happy,” and he takes this role very seriously.

Pulcinella typically works under Demiurge, assisting with the management and operation of the livestock farms that fall under Demiurge’s control.

In practice, this makes him closely involved with some of the most horrifying facilities of Nazarick, even as he frames his actions as acts of “mercy” and “happiness.”

Although he extends his wish for happiness to those sent into Nazarick from the outside world, his definition of happiness for them is deeply warped.

For non-Nazarick individuals, he believes happiness is achieved “relatively,” by seeing others suffer or be sacrificed so they can feel comparatively better.

Pulcinella speaks in an eccentric, affected manner that visually replaces the usual topic-marking particle “wa” with “wa” written phonetically at the end of relevant words (for example, “watashi wa” appearing as “watashi wa” in stylized form).

In English rendering, this is often represented by a quirky, sing-song tone, giving his lines a distinctive flavor that fits his jester persona.

Within Nazarick, he is considered exceptionally mild-tempered, patient, and merciful.

He shows kindness and concern toward many of Nazarick’s residents and sincerely wishes for their emotional fulfillment.

His concept of “mercy” and “kindness,” however, is tightly bound to Nazarick’s worldview.

He has no apparent moral objection to torture, slaughter, or experiments, as long as these acts serve Nazarick’s goals and his own idea of distributing “happiness.”

For residents of Nazarick, his benevolence is direct and genuine: he wants them to feel joy, safety, and satisfaction.

He acts like a caretaker or court entertainer, trying to brighten their lives in an otherwise grim environment.

For those from the outside, his approach is disturbingly utilitarian and relative.

He believes that people can feel happy when they see that someone else is suffering worse than they are, or when others are sacrificed on their behalf, and he treats this as a legitimate form of “happiness.”

This twisted but internally consistent philosophy makes him both unsettling and strangely earnest.

He does not see himself as evil; he imagines he is giving “the best possible happiness” within the cruel framework he accepts as normal.

The mask resembles a bird’s beak, with a long, sharply protruding nose that stretches out from his face in an exaggerated fashion.
