Demiurge is the Guardian of the 7th Floor, “Lava”, within the Great Tomb of Nazarick.

Within Nazarick, he also holds the role of overall defense commander, meaning that in emergencies he has the authority to coordinate all Floor Guardians in defense of the tomb.

He is one of the central planners behind Nazarick’s diplomacy, internal policy, and military strategy, though in the light novel much of the internal administration is delegated to Albedo, leaving Demiurge in charge mainly of external operations, expansion plans, and covert activities.

He is famous in-story and among readers as the one who took a casual joke by Ainz about “world domination” literally and then codified it as Nazarick’s grand strategic objective.

This misunderstanding forces Ainz, who is internally just a former Japanese office worker, to constantly pretend that all of Demiurge’s brilliant schemes are part of his own vast master plan.

Demiurge speaks extremely politely and calmly, with a soft, pleasant voice that complements his skill set and devilish charm.

On the surface he is the model of a courteous gentleman, and he treats Nazarick’s inhabitants as precious comrades and “family.”

Toward humans and most outsiders, however, he views them as toys or livestock, to be manipulated, tormented, and eventually discarded.

He derives genuine pleasure from tricking humans with eloquent lies, driving them into despair, and orchestrating their ruin, a textbook devil in both method and mentality.

That said, this cruelty is filtered through his absolute devotion to Ainz Ooal Gown.

If a human is useful to Ainz, has potential value, or has been recognized by Ainz, Demiurge will treat them “kindly” and cooperatively—at least as long as they remain beneficial.

He often acts on the basis of “What would Ainz do in this situation?”

Because he has an unshakable belief that Ainz’s intellect far surpasses his own, he tends to over-interpret simple words or unplanned actions by Ainz, spinning them into complex, multi-layered schemes.

This leads to the series’ recurring gag:

Ainz casually says or does something.

Demiurge reads a deep, terrifyingly brilliant plan into it.

Everyone praises Ainz’s genius.

Ainz internally panics and tries to keep up the act.

Demiurge’s loyalty is among the highest in Nazarick, generally considered second only to Pandora’s Actor (who was directly created by Ainz).

Because his creator was Ulbert, he cannot offer the same “creator-based” loyalty to Ainz, but emotionally and ideologically he is one of Ainz’s most devoted followers.

He is particularly anxious about the possibility that Ainz might disappear or abandon them, and scenes repeatedly show him worrying about Ainz’s wellbeing and future.

This concern is so strong that, in matters affecting Ainz’s life and safety, Demiurge is willing to oppose orders or question decisions, something almost unheard of in Nazarick.

He deeply dislikes Sebas Tian due to their diametrically opposite values regarding humans, and the two are in a “dogs and cats” relationship.

Ironically, Cocytus—whose personality and sense of honor is also opposite to Demiurge’s devilish cruelty—is one of Demiurge’s best friends, and the two get along surprisingly well.

Demiurge also has a quirky hobby: carpentry and “artistic” crafting.

He creates macabre furniture such as chairs made from the bones of various species and presents them as offerings to Ainz.

Demiurge believes Ainz to be a peerless schemer whose intellect dwarfs his own, and he treats Ainz’s words as near-absolute truth.

This belief is in stark contrast to reality: Ainz is, mentally, just an ordinary Japanese salaryman with no real-world experience in ruling or conquest.

The iconic misunderstanding that shapes the entire Overlord story is when Ainz—half-jokingly—mentions “world conquest.”

Demiurge interprets this as the true will of his supreme master, and from there he begins designing and executing long-term, multi-layered plans to make it a reality.

Ainz often does not fully understand what Demiurge is doing.

Because Demiurge is loyal, efficient, and terrifyingly smart, Ainz tends to give him broad freedom, which also means Ainz cannot completely track everything he does in the outside world.

When Ainz employs some spontaneous move (often to deal with a misunderstanding or to keep up appearances), Demiurge will reinterpret it as a hyper-advanced stratagem with hidden layers.

This in turn pressures Ainz to never admit ignorance, leading to moments like:

Ainz: internally, “I have no idea what’s going on; someone please explain!”

Out loud: “Demiurge, explain it for everyone’s sake.”

Demiurge: delivers a flawless, detailed analysis of “Ainz’s plan,” which Ainz hears for the first time.

In critical situations like the battle against Shalltear Bloodfallen when she is mind-controlled, or the deadly duel planned between Ainz and the group called Erich String Ensemble (a team including Demiurge’s subordinate “Rage” and doppleganger versions of the Pleiades), Demiurge is prepared to disobey Ainz’s orders to protect his life.

In such cases, he and Albedo are ready to intervene even if Ainz forbids it.

Demiurge embodies Nazarick supremacism.

He believes that all beings of Nazarick, as creations of the Supreme Beings, are inherently superior.

To fellow NPCs and subordinates within Nazarick, he is gentle, respectful, and sincerely caring.

He often uses warm words, encourages their growth, and takes their welfare seriously—as long as their loyalty to Ainz is unwavering.

Humans, on the other hand, are generally seen as “sheep,” playthings, or livestock.

The clearest manifestation of this is the Demiurge Ranch, where he “raises” humans in large numbers—calling them sheep—and flays their skin to produce parchment for magic scrolls, turning them into literal resources.

He does not hate humans emotionally; he simply doesn’t recognize them as equals.

However, if Ainz recognizes a human, or if a human proves extremely useful, Demiurge can behave in a very friendly and even nurturing way, as long as it serves Nazarick’s and Ainz’s interests.

In an alternate-world story, under orders from Ainz to avoid conflict, Demiurge even becomes completely friendly and in sync with a certain young girl, showing he can interact peacefully if ordered to.

Scroll Mass Production and the Demiurge Ranch

After Nazarick is transported to the new world, resources are finite and mass production of consumables becomes critical.

Among these, scrolls are key for enabling magic-less members to use spells.

Demiurge discovers and captures a creature known as the “Holy Kingdom Two-Legged Sheep (Averion Sheep)” and the method to use its “human-derived” skin to produce parchment.

By establishing the Demiurge Ranch, he successfully sets up mass production of low-tier scrolls, fulfilling Ainz’s desire for a sustainable scroll supply—though the ethical cost is horrifying by human standards.

The Jaldabaoth Persona and Kingdom Capital Attack

To quickly raise the fame of Ainz’s adventurer persona Momonga (Mommon), Demiurge creates the masked demon identity “Jaldabaoth.”

Under this alias, he stages a catastrophic attack on the Re-Estize Kingdom’s capital, turning the city into a hellish battlefield.

Objectives include:

Punishing those who insulted or harmed Ainz’s prestige.

Seizing large quantities of resources and slaves.

Creating a deadly “enemy” for the hero Momon to defeat, dramatically boosting his public reputation.

Ainz participates in this plan, “battling” Jaldabaoth in public.

Behind the scenes, “Jaldabaoth” is simply Demiurge in disguise, and the whole event is orchestrated so that the demon emperor becomes a future plot piece while Momon emerges as a legendary hero.

The plan consumes almost no Nazarick core resources, making it a high-efficiency operation.

Recruitment of a Genius in the Kingdom

During and around the capital attack, Demiurge, together with Albedo and others, successfully recruits a human whose intelligence may rival or even surpass theirs.

This individual becomes a key asset and a future cornerstone of the plan to take over the Kingdom from within.

This is generally understood to refer to Princess Renner (not named in the original text, but known in the series), whose cunning and moral emptiness match Nazarick’s interests very well.

Building the Sorcerer Kingdom

Demiurge leaks carefully chosen information about Nazarick to Emperor Jircniv Rune Farlord El Nix of the Baharuth Empire.

He deliberately allows Jircniv to send workers (adventurer-like mercenaries) into Nazarick, creating a scenario in which:

Nazarick appears as an innocent nation attacked first by the Empire.

Ainz gains moral high ground and a just cause to negotiate, retaliate, and then appear “reasonable.”

The way is paved for the founding of the Sorcerer Kingdom of Ainz Ooal Gown.

Demiurge’s design also cleverly leverages the legend of Momon to prevent internal revolts:

If anyone rebels against the Sorcerer King, they must face both Ainz and Momon, supposedly two separate top-tier heroes.

Momon publicly praises the Sorcerer King as merciful and wise, helping to shape public opinion and enable relatively peaceful rule.

However, Ainz personally is uncomfortable with allowing criminal workers to trample Nazarick’s sacred grounds, even as part of a plan.

He ultimately accepts it because he has no better alternative and must maintain his “all-knowing ruler” image.

Plan for Subjugating the Empire

Demiurge states that, if Ainz personally moved according to his design, the Baharuth Empire could be made a vassal within one month.

Nonetheless, he considers relying heavily on Ainz’s direct involvement a failure of his duty as a subordinate.

He therefore designs a slower, more subtle path to bring the Empire under Nazarick’s control largely through indirect pressure and political manipulation.

In contrast, Ainz eventually acts on his own and forces the Empire into vassalage within three days, without casualties, outpacing even Demiurge’s expectations.

The Sacred Kingdom Invasion

In the Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom storyline, Demiurge is the mastermind behind the invasion of the Roble Holy Kingdom.

Under the flag of “Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth,” he overruns much of the country, turning it into a living hell.

His goals include:

Sorting demi-human races into “useful” (to be integrated into the Sorcerer Kingdom) and “useless” (to be exterminated in war).

Securing resources, territory, and shock value to support Nazarick’s long-term expansion.

Interestingly, his written plan is deliberately vague about Ainz’s actions.

Demiurge, thinking he must not constrain Ainz’s brilliance, writes only something like “Ainz will act as he sees fit.”

As a result, Ainz pulls an improvisational “ultimate move” in the Sacred Kingdom, which compresses Demiurge’s multi-year plan into a drastically shorter timeline.

The Destruction of the Kingdom

When Ainz takes an incomprehensible step that ruins Demiurge’s and Albedo’s carefully layered plan to conquer the Re-Estize Kingdom from within, they are initially shocked.

However, Demiurge quickly reframes it as part of a “carrot and stick” plan to annihilate the Kingdom and grind its survivors into obedience to the Sorcerer Kingdom.

He proposes the “Candy and Whip” concept as a new strategic direction:

Show overwhelming terror and destruction to break resistance (the whip).

Then offer security and benefits under Ainz’s rule (the candy).

As always, he interprets Ainz’s sudden and seemingly chaotic move as a superior strategy none of them could foresee.

Demiurge’s unique Guardian trait is listed as “Rank 6: Manly Romance – Strongest”, a kind of joke designation pointing to his thematic strength rather than raw stats.

In straightforward physical terms, he is relatively weak among the Floor Guardians.

Overall power:

His basic combat parameters are “average” by Guardian standards.

In pure physical strength, he is regarded as the weakest of the Guardians.

The light novel shows him getting pushed back by a mid-tier monster when holding back, highlighting his lack of brute force.

Despite this, Demiurge’s importance is strategic, not purely combative.

He is the defensive commander of Nazarick, with the authority to direct all Guardians during a serious invasion, and his value lies in planning, command skills, and flexible abilities.

In battle, he often uses his “Aspects of the Devil” abilities to transform parts of his body and fight in close-quarters.

Even then, the raw damage is unimpressive compared to heavy hitters like Cocytus or Shalltear Bloodfallen, but his real edge comes from:

Status effects

Control skills

Summons

Environmental control

Clever item and scroll usage

He knows only a limited number of spells directly and tends to rely heavily on scrolls and other consumables.

In the web novel, he is more clearly built as a support and command type, with buffs and control abilities.

His true combat potential is believed to lie in his other transformation forms, but both web and light novel have only partially revealed these.

Below are some of Demiurge’s known abilities from the web novel, light novel, drama CDs, and game spinoffs.

Aspects of the Devil (Shapeshifting Suite)

These are thematic transformations where Demiurge alters parts of his body to gain specialized abilities.

Aspect of the Devil: Keen Severing Claws

Elongates both hands into claws over 80 cm long.

Used for slashing and melee attacks.

Aspect of the Devil: Loathsome Body Enhancement

(Web novel) Temporarily boosts overall physical abilities.

Increases strength, speed, and durability for close combat.

Aspect of the Devil: Great Demonic Arm

Enlarges his right arm to massive proportions.

Used to crush or swat enemies with brute force.

Aspect of the Devil: Tentacular Wings

His black wings transform into flexible, tentacle-like appendages.

He can attack multiple enemies at once or restrain targets.

Aspect of the Devil: Eight-Limbed Swiftness

(Drama CD “The Sealed Evil Tree”) Greatly boosts his speed and agility.

Details are not fully explained, but he becomes extremely fast and mobile.

Aspect of the Devil: Raiment of Purgatory

Wraps himself in hellfire.

Provides offense and possibly defense by wreathed flame.

Fire and Hellfire Manipulation

Hellfire (Hellish Flames)

Cloaks his body in flames and enhances all his fire damage via special techniques.

Even enemies with complete fire immunity cannot emerge entirely unharmed if they take the attack directly.

Hellfire Wall

Conjures a wall of hellfire.

In the story, this attack instantly kills Gagaran and Tia, showing its extreme lethality against human adventurers.

Sodom’s Fire and Brimstone

(Web novel and the game “Mass for the Dead”)

Calls down flaming projectiles from the sky, inflicting area fire-element damage.

Affects all enemies within the targeted region.

Control and Status Effects

Domination of the Word (Commanding Word / Control Word)

A signature skill.

Forces any target of level 40 or below to obey a command with no chance to resist.

In the new world, very few individuals exceed level 40, making this essentially absolute control over most humans.

However, it is sound-based, so it can be countered by:

Resistance to mind control and domination

Resistance to sonic or voice-based attacks

Reduced language comprehension or blocking sound transmission

Judecaa’s Freeze

(Drama CD “The Sealed Evil Tree”)

Appears to freeze either the target’s time or their body.

Exact mechanics are unclear but it functions as a strong immobilization ability.

Petrifying Gaze

(Web novel)

A short-range gaze attack that can petrify multiple targets within his field of view.

Space and Movement Control

Dimensional Lock

Prevents teleportation and other transfer-type magic within an area.

Used to trap enemies or secure a battlefield so targets cannot escape.

Summoning and Area Attacks

Viscera-Incense Censer

(Web novel)

A named technique likely tied to an item or spell that affects an area with some kind of gruesome, aura-like effect.

The exact details are not spelled out, but it functions as an area attack or debuff zone.

Demon General Summon (Magic General Summon / Evil Lord Summon)

Once every 50 hours he can summon a Demon General–class devil and control it for a limited time.

Used to bring powerful subordinates like the Evil Lords onto the battlefield.

Demiurge commands several powerful devils and specialized servants.

Three Demon Generals (Evil Lords)

These are high-level devils under Demiurge’s direct command, each embodying a deadly sin.

Evil Lord Wrath (Evil Lord of Rage)

Level: 84

Appearance:

Body covered in scales

Thick arms ending in sharp claws

Long snake-like tail

Burning wings

Overall, a classic, brutal devil-warrior look.

Role: Physical front-line fighter with extremely high HP.

Traits:

Physical attack focused.

Has a unique mechanic where rising “rage” increases both damage and defense.

Constantly emanates an “Aura of Flame,” a passive that deals ongoing fire damage to enemies in range.

Can cast spells up to 10th tier, making him a hybrid of a powerful warrior and high-tier spellcaster.

Wrath is used as one of the core combatants in operations like the masquerade battles involving the Erich String Ensemble, a group of disguised superior doppelgangers.

Evil Lord Envy

Level: Somewhere in the 80s (exact figure not given).

Appearance:

Seductive, voluptuous body wrapped in black bondage-like clothing.

Head of a crow or raven.

Her design mixes erotic and grotesque elements, fitting the sin of jealousy and twisted desire.

Details of her abilities are not deeply explored, but as an Evil Lord under Demiurge, she is assumed to be extremely dangerous.

Evil Lord Greed

Level: Also in the 80s.

Appearance:

Most human-looking of the three.

Has black bat-like wings and two horns.

Handsome face, with eyes that he keeps hidden, burdened by endless, unfulfillable desire.

Again, detailed abilities are not fully described, but his theme fits hoarding, acquisition, and insatiable hunger.

Shadow Demons

Shadow Demons are devils that live within the shadows of others, used for surveillance and relaying messages.

They function as spies and messengers, enabling Demiurge to monitor events remotely.

These creatures also serve other Nazarick members like Shalltear Bloodfallen and Sebas Tian, showing they are a general-purpose asset but under Demiurge’s control structure.

The Twelve Zodiac Demons

In the special story “The King’s Messenger,” Demiurge is shown to command a group called the Twelve Zodiac Demons.

Curiously, only seven of the twelve currently exist in Nazarick, and the whereabouts of the remaining five—Garila, Iabel, Belias, Kainan, Abilethia—are unknown.

Their names are derived from demons created by Yaldabaoth in the Book of Revelation, tying them thematically to Demiurge’s own alias Jaldabaoth.

Demiurge is one of the characters whose appearance and presentation differ the most between the original web novel and the published light novel.

In fact, visually he is almost a different person.

Web novel Demiurge:

More like a flamboyant “demon king” straight out of a fantasy game.

Red skin, horns, wings, splendid robes.

Personality slightly lighter and more “Italian playboy” in flavor—still evil, but with a flirtatious, dramatic flair.

Light novel Demiurge:

Designed as an intellectual aide and strategist, visually reminiscent of a sharp office worker.

More serious, composed, and less hot-blooded.

So far, every mission he takes on is executed perfectly, giving him a reputation as one of Nazarick’s most reliable Guardians.

The core concept remains the same: a polite, brilliant devil strategist totally devoted to Ainz.

However, the nuances of his mannerisms and emotional tone differ, with the light novel leaning towards a more calm, ultra-competent bureaucrat of evil.

In both versions, his relationship with Sebas Tian is consistently bad—they fundamentally clash in their views on humans and morality.

In the mobile game MASS FOR THE DEAD, Demiurge’s core characterization remains consistent: a ruthless but polite mastermind devoted to Ainz.

However, the game introduces additional storylines, including one where he unexpectedly ends up with a child—a concept that has become a popular topic in secondary fan works tied to the original author’s side stories.

Demiurge is voiced by Masayuki Kato in the anime adaptation of Overlord.

Fans often comment that his casting seems designed specifically to deliver the velvety, persuasive tone required for “Domination of the Word,” his charmingly lethal control skill.

By contrast, Pandora’s Actor, voiced by Mamoru Miyano, is so theatrically over-the-top that he’s often described as a “one-man voice actor no-rules zone,” accentuating Demiurge’s calmness by comparison.

Because of his devilish appearance and demeanor, many early viewers were convinced that “he will absolutely betray Ainz one day.”

The Season 2 opening, which shows Demiurge facing off against Momon, fueled this speculation, leading to memes such as “Demiurge, you betrayed us!”

In reality, barring mind control or external interference, Demiurge betraying Nazarick is virtually impossible.

His loyalty is one of the strongest in the entire series, and he consistently prioritizes Ainz’s safety and goals above everything else.

The author has mentioned that Demiurge’s model or inspiration is the final antagonist of Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro, a character known for committing horrific acts and possessing overwhelming intelligence.

In a similar way, many of Demiurge’s worst deeds are either only implied or briefly described, leaving their full horror to the imagination.

Because Demiurge often shows up with fully formed solutions to every problem—covering diplomacy, internal policy, war, economics, and more—the author has jokingly referred to him as “Demi-emon.”

The idea is “Why not let Demiurge handle everything?” in the same sense as a cartoon genius character who always has the right gadget.

Within the story, this leads to the humorous dynamic where Ainz, the supposed mastermind, is actually scrambling to keep up with Demiurge’s plans, while Demiurge is convinced Ainz is the one orchestrating everything.

The result is one of the most entertaining and defining relationships in Overlord, with Demiurge at the heart of Nazarick’s grand march toward world domination.
