Biscas T. Balmus is the Pope of the Three Heroes Church, a figure who appears calm and is trusted by his followers, but in reality, he is a dangerous fanatic willing to do anything for his faith. He orchestrated the summoning of the Four Holy Heroes to Melromarc and was also behind the persecution of the Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani. He manipulated events from the shadows, tried to eliminate even the very heroes he was supposed to support, and didn't hesitate to target royal family members for his own benefit. His power comes from ritual magic and a powerful replica of the Holy Weapons, making him a tough opponent. Ultimately, he is brought down by the teamwork of Naofumi’s group and the intervention of Queen Mirellia Q Melromarc. In the spin-off story, he recurs as a villain, but suffers even harsher fates, often being quickly defeated and killed.
Biscas T. Balmus is a middle-aged man with a gentle look and wears glasses.
He is often seen dressed in white robes, which are typical attire for the Pope of the Three Heroes Church.
His outfit gives him an air of dignity and trustworthiness.
He appears calm and collected, not showing his true emotions easily.
To the public, Biscas T. Balmus appears gentle, polite, and fair.
He is trusted by his followers, who believe he is wise and virtuous.
Behind this calm mask, he is an intense fanatic.
He is willing to do anything for the Church’s authority, even taking lives.
He justifies any action by saying, “It is all guided by God.”
He especially despises the Shield Hero, referring to him as the “Devil of the Shield.”
Biscas is highly manipulative, using faith and religion as tools to control others.
When he feels threatened, he quickly becomes ruthless and even arrogant, claiming himself almost as a god.
He is the leader of the Three Heroes Church, which is the state religion of Melromarc.
He played a central role in stealing the relic needed to summon the Four Holy Heroes, causing them to be summoned only in Melromarc.
This led to the Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani, being unfairly targeted.
He abused the trust and power the Church held over the people to manipulate both the public and the heroes.
For a long time, he hid his true colors behind polite gestures and fake righteousness.
Biscas T. Balmus uses ritual magic, powered by the energy of his Church’s believers.
He wields a replica of the Four Holy Weapons, which allows him to change its form (except for the shield, which he refuses to use due to his beliefs).
This replica can mimic the powers and skills of the actual Holy Weapons with about one-fourth of their real power.
The weapon's strong skills include:
- Brionac: Shoots a powerful beam from the spear.
- Phoenix Blade: Sends flames shaped like a phoenix.
- Great Windmill: Defensive spinning of the spear.
- Hide Arrow: Creates copies as camouflage.
He commands group magic with his believers, using spells like “Judgment” (a giant bolt of magic lightning), “Wall” (defensive barriers), and “Sanctuary” (removes curses).
His fighting skills are enhanced by the support and healing magic from his followers.
However, his attacks consume a huge amount of magical energy, needing hundreds of followers to maintain them.
- Naofumi Iwatani: Biscas sees him as the church’s enemy, labeling him as the “Devil of the Shield.”
- Mirellia Q Melromarc (the Queen): The Pope manipulates events behind her back and is eventually overthrown with her help.
- The Three Heroes (Motoyasu Kitamura, Ren Amaki, Itsuki Kawasumi): Initially tries to use them as tools; later sees them as disposable.
- Malty S Melromarc and Melty Q Melromarc (Princesses): Biscas plans to kill them when they become obstacles.
- His name, Biscas T. Balmus, is set in the anime and official guidebooks.
- In the web and manga versions, he is simply referred to as the “Pope.”
- He never uses the shield form of the replica Holy Weapon because of the Church’s hatred for the Shield Hero.
- In the anime adaptation, he appears earlier than in the original story, acting as a referee for Naofumi’s duel.
- "Everything is guided by God."
- "Please be grateful for the mercy of God."
- "We don't need heroes! I am God!"
Early Appearance
Biscas T. Balmus is first introduced when Naofumi Iwatani and Raphtalia come to the Church to buy holy water to heal Raphtalia’s curse.
He scolds a sister trying to sell low-quality holy water, leaving a good impression on Naofumi.
Manipulation and Schemes
In secret, Biscas works to turn the Three Heroes against Naofumi, spreading negative rumors and using spies to shape public opinion.
He sends false information through the guild and Malty S Melromarc, causing trouble for Naofumi.
However, Naofumi’s good deeds and the problems caused by the other heroes make the public doubt the Church and trust the Shield Hero more.
Escalation of Conflict
Angry that his plans are failing, Biscas tries to frame Naofumi for the attempted murder of Melty Q Melromarc, forcing a confrontation amongst the heroes.
With trust eroding, he attempts to kill Naofumi and the Three Heroes, while also planning to get rid of the two princesses so the church can control the throne.
The Final Battle
Biscas calls Ren Amaki and Itsuki Kawasumi away to attack them with ritual magic called “Judgment.”
He tries to trap Naofumi, Motoyasu Kitamura, and the princesses to kill them all at once.
Even when the Four Heroes join forces, Biscas overpowers them with the replica Holy Weapon and the backing of his followers’ magic.
Naofumi manages to turn the tide with his powerful “Curse Shield” skills and the arrival of Queen Mirellia Q Melromarc.
Biscas is finally defeated and is left badly wounded and killed by Naofumi’s blood sacrifice skill.
In "The Reprise of the Spear Hero"
In the spin-off, Motoyasu Kitamura directly targets Biscas as his main enemy.
No matter which timeline, Biscas always meets a terrible end, often being easily and quickly defeated by the now much stronger Motoyasu.
He tries to use holy weapon replicas and take hostages but is always outmatched and killed, often alongside his loyal followers.
Holy Weapon Replica
The replica weapon created by lost technology can change into a sword, spear, bow, or shield, though Biscas never uses the shield form.
The replica is only about a quarter as strong as the real Holy Weapons.
It is fueled by ritual magic, which requires the magical power of hundreds of believers.
It is used to attack the heroes and their party with strong skills, as well as to create barriers and defense.
After his defeat, the replica is discovered to be much less powerful than the original weapons when copied by Naofumi and his friends.
In the past, Eclair Seaetto and others used improved versions of these weapons in their battles.
Magic Skills
Biscas and his followers use group ritual magic for attack and defense.
Their most-used attack is “Judgment,” a huge lightning strike from the sky.
They create strong barriers with “Wall” and can use “Sanctuary” for curse removal.
In the anime, a unique spell called “Cathedral” traps opponents in a magical space and powers up attacks, although it is eventually broken by Queen Mirellia.
- Biscas’s fanatical devotion and hidden cruelty make him one of the most dangerous villains in the story.
- His downfall is caused by his own arrogance and by underestimating his opponents.
- His character highlights the dangers of blind faith and fanaticism in positions of power.
