Naofumi Iwatani

Naofumi Iwatani is usually shown as a young man with short, dark hair and sharp eyes. His look changes depending on his situation—a softer look in early scenes, but more glum and harsh after he is betrayed. He often wears armor that fits his role as the Shield Hero, such as spiked armor or layered protective gear made by Elhart. Over time, his armor and shield evolve, showing his journey and growth.

Before the Betrayal

Naofumi was cheerful, a bit clumsy, and had a bright attitude. He acted as an easy-going, friendly guy with a passion for games, manga, and anime.

After the Betrayal

His personality changes sharply after the false accusation. Naofumi becomes filled with anger, distrust, and a sense of cruelty. He finds it hard to trust others and is sometimes cold or harsh to people he dislikes. Threats, blackmail, or tricks do not faze him if he needs to survive. He especially does not tolerate lies or betrayal.

Yet, if someone helps him, he always pays back the favor. He looks after his companions and the children he takes in, even if he calls himself a "bad guy." He often claims that he is undeserving of happiness because of his past actions but still protects the weak and returns kindness he receives.

Relationships With Women

Because of the trauma from the false accusation, Naofumi avoids romantic or sexual thoughts. He is uneasy around women who approach him, misunderstandings with Raphtalia often happen, and he is very dense to any hints of attraction. He cannot sense when girls like him and avoids getting involved in romance.

Naofumi Iwatani was an ordinary 20-year-old otaku who loved games, manga, and anime. One day, while reading a mysterious book called "The Four Holy Weapons Record" at the library, he is pulled into another world alongside three other heroes. He is given the role of the Shield Hero, which comes with heavy restrictions—he can only use shields and cannot attack directly.

At first, he tries to fit in and be friends with others, but he is set up by Malty S Melromarc, accused of a crime he never did, and becomes the most hated person in the kingdom. With no one to trust, he buys Raphtalia, a slave girl, and starts his quest from the very bottom.

Shield Fighting

Naofumi’s fighting style focuses on defense. He cannot use any weapons except shields, so he blocks attacks and protects his team. His shields can have different abilities, like reflecting damage or creating barriers.

Magic and Skills

He is good at support magic, especially healing and enchantment. One of his key skills, "Aura," powers up allies during battle. He also has "Curse Series" abilities, which allow him to use powerful moves at the cost of hurting himself or risking his mind.

Crafting and Cooking

Naofumi is extremely talented at making potions, accessories, and unique dishes. He can copy foods he has tasted before and adapt recipes to people's tastes. His creations are so good that people believe he could open a famous restaurant.

Shortly after being summoned, Malty S Melromarc tricks and frames Naofumi for a crime he did not commit. He loses all status, money, and trust. This betrayal makes him distrustful and bitter.

Building a New Life

With nothing left, Naofumi buys Raphtalia as a slave and begins to fight monsters for money. Even though he is cruel to enemies, he shows kind care to those under his protection.

He saves villages during the Waves, focusing on helping people rather than just fighting monsters. Eventually, Raphtalia wins his trust and becomes his closest friend.

Adventures With Companions

He rescues and travels with Raphtalia, Filo, and later Melty Q Melromarc, the second princess. Together, they help solve problems in towns, fight powerful monsters, and build up trust as a team.

Naofumi also works as a merchant, selling potions and goods made with his unique abilities, which bring him respect and a new reputation as the "Saint of the Sacred Bird."

Clearing His Name

After a long struggle, Naofumi defeats the main enemies who targeted him and finds support among the people. The Queen, Mirellia Q Melromarc, returns and clears his name, but Naofumi remains cautious.

Becoming a Leader

He is given land and a noble title as thanks for saving the kingdom. He gathers more followers, helps rebuild villages, and trains young fighters. His experience changes him; though still stern, he opens up more as he finds people he can trust again.

Facing Greater Threats

Naofumi and his friends face stronger enemies from other worlds, such as Kyo Ethnina and Glass. He overcomes his trauma bit by bit, aided by his companions and his sense of responsibility as a hero.

The Curse and His Growth

Through battles, he unlocks the full power of his shield but must battle against the "Curse Series" inside him, which threatens his mind and soul. He learns to balance his anger and love for his friends.

Alternate Paths

In the spinoff "The Reprise of the Spear Hero," Naofumi is saved from the betrayal by Motoyasu Kitamura. In these worlds, his personality is much warmer and less broken, but he is still strict towards enemies who threaten others.
