Character Setting

Edit

Footman is a male magic-born fighter and member of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, known by the epithet “Angry Pierrot.”

He is a battle-oriented Deathman created by Kagali and secretly carries the implanted soul of the former Magic Emperor Jahil.

Footman is one of several compatriots reborn as a Deathman under Kagali’s control.

He belongs to the Moderate Harlequin Alliance and acts as one of its main combat executors in large-scale schemes.

His nickname “Angry Pierrot” reflects both his clown-like affiliation and his dangerous, explosive temperament in battle.

Despite his easygoing, almost carefree way of speaking, he is feared for the raw destructive power he can unleash.

He has a fat, heavyset body, which contrasts with the speed and impact of his attacks.

Within the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, he possesses the greatest total energy output.

Footman is voiced by Shinji Kawada in the anime adaptation.

His appearance and mannerisms emphasize the unsettling mix of clownishness and brutality that defines many members of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance.

On the surface, Footman speaks with a casual, almost playful tone.

This laid-back speech style can make him seem foolish or harmless at first glance.

However, due to Kagali’s earlier lack of skill when creating him, his soul and power were poorly balanced.

His immense power overwhelmed his psyche, leaving his mind underdeveloped and unstable.

As a result, Footman is emotionally immature and easily swept up in impulse and rage.

He often acts as a blunt instrument in the Alliance’s plans rather than as a careful strategist.

He retains enough cunning to perform covert operations and follow complicated orders.

Even so, he is more comfortable overwhelming enemies with raw power than outwitting them.

Footman is also bound by a restriction that prevents him from disobeying Kagali.

This lack of freedom becomes a central point of inner conflict when he is forced to act against people he would rather not fight.

Footman is a battle-specialized Deathman whose combat style centers on overwhelming kinetic force.

He has the ability to freely amplify waveforms and mass according to his will.

By increasing mass and energy, he can strike with colossal amounts of kinetic energy.

This makes his attacks devastating in close-quarters combat and even at medium range when he manifests that power through impacts.

Among the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, Footman has the highest energy reserves.

He is stronger overall than Tear, who is also a combat-specialized Deathman, although his technical finesse is inferior.

His raw power is tremendous, but his control and precision are not top-tier.

Because of his limited technical skill, he can lose out to more refined fighters despite his greater energy.

Even so, Footman’s strength is high enough to decisively defeat Geld at the time when Geld had just powered up in response to Rimuru Tempest’s evolution into a Demon Lord.

This places Footman well above most ordinary high-class fighters and marks him as a serious threat on the battlefield.

He is skilled in direct combat and can apply his amplification abilities to various movements and strikes.

This allows him to crush defenses through sheer force and overwhelm opponents who rely on endurance or physical toughness.

Footman was born as a Deathman through the efforts of Kagali.

He is one of her artificially created subordinates, designed specifically for combat.

At the time of his creation, Kagali’s technique was still immature.

The distribution of Footman’s soul and power failed, causing his immense power to suppress the growth of his mind.

This imbalance locked him into an underdeveloped mental state, even though his body and abilities are extremely powerful.

The resulting instability makes him more prone to recklessness and emotional outbursts.

Like Tear, Footman belongs to a series of battle-oriented Deathmen created for large-scale warfare and covert operations.

Their design emphasizes brute combat ability over emotional stability or independence.

Unknown to most, Footman’s body houses the implanted soul of Jahil.

Jahil was the Magic Emperor of a super-magic empire destroyed by Milim Nava under Feldway’s guidance.

This hidden implantation later becomes crucial when Feldway triggers Jahil’s awakening.

At that moment, Footman’s body becomes a vessel for Jahil’s return.

Early Activities in the Great Jura Forest

In the early part of the story, Footman works alongside Tear and others to stir up chaos.

He plays an active role in the events surrounding the Pig-Head Emperor Geld.

During this time, Footman is involved in schemes that lead to the destruction of the ogre tribe’s village.

Acting as a behind-the-scenes executor, he helps plunge the Great Jura Forest into disorder.

His actions contribute to the chain of tragedies that ultimately bring several key characters into conflict.

Footman’s presence marks him as an early antagonist operating from the shadows.

Surveillance of the Battle in Eurazania

In volume 6 of the novels, Footman is dispatched at Clayman’s request.

His mission is to observe the battlefield in the Beast Kingdom of Eurazania.

While he is monitoring the conflict, he is discovered by Geld and others, who have a deep grudge against him.

This confrontation leads to a battle where Footman clashes directly with Geld.

Thanks to his overwhelming raw power, Footman dominates the fight and overpowers Geld.

This encounter showcases just how dangerous he has become as a combatant.

Assault on the Holy Empire of Lubelius

In volume 10, Footman participates in an assault on the Holy Empire of Lubelius.

During this operation, he fights against Gunther Strauss.

The battle with Gunther is intense and pushes Footman to his limits.

He is nearly killed in the confrontation, coming close to death despite his enormous power.

This near-fatal experience highlights the level of resistance posed by the defenders of Lubelius.

It also shows that Footman’s brute-force approach can be countered by strong and well-prepared opponents.

Forced Cooperation with the Eastern Empire

By volume 15, Footman’s inability to disobey Kagali places him in a difficult position.

Kagali falls under the mental control of Kondo, an agent of the Eastern Empire.

Because of this, Footman is compelled to support the Eastern Empire’s plans, even against his own preferences.

He is forced into battle against allies of Rimuru Tempest and other factions.

To cope with the situation and with the restriction placed upon him, Footman deliberately lets his rationality slip.

By doing so, he attempts to avoid going all out or making fully conscious decisions that would deepen his guilt.

During this period, he fights against Phobio and Barn.

These battles take place while Footman is intentionally suppressing his reason, limiting how seriously he can commit to the fight.

His actions in this arc underline his status as a pawn trapped by binding constraints.

Even as a powerful warrior, he lacks the freedom to choose his own path.

Behind Footman’s clownish exterior lies a far darker secret.

The soul of Jahil, the Magic Emperor of a once-great super-magic empire, has been implanted into him.

Jahil’s empire was annihilated by Milim Nava in the past, under the direction of Feldway.

To further his own schemes, Feldway preserved Jahil’s soul and later placed it within Footman.

For much of the story, this fact remains hidden.

Footman functions as himself, albeit with his usual instability and overwhelming power.

During the battles in Eldorado, Feldway finally gives the signal for Jahil to awaken.

In response, Jahil’s soul seizes control of Footman’s body.

At that moment, Footman effectively loses his body to Jahil.

The vessel that had once been the clumsy yet fearsome “Angry Pierrot” becomes the reincarnation of the Magic Emperor.

This twist reframes Footman’s entire existence as part of a long-term plan orchestrated by Feldway.

His life as a Deathman and member of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance turns out to be a stepping stone in a much larger plot.

Footman is a core combatant of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance.

Within the group, he is one of the main executors for dangerous field operations.

He shares a similar origin with Tear, who is also a battle-focused Deathman created by Kagali.

Though he possesses greater energy than Tear, his comparative lack of finesse keeps their relationship from being purely hierarchical.

His creator, Kagali, holds an unbreakable influence over him due to the restrictions placed upon his existence.

He cannot disobey her, regardless of his personal feelings, which makes him vulnerable when Kagali herself is manipulated by others.

Footman’s enmity with Geld is especially strong, stemming from the destruction of the ogre village and the events around the Pig-Head Emperor.

Their confrontation during the monitoring of Eurazania’s battlefield gives physical form to that deep-seated grudge.

He also has direct conflict with Gunther Strauss during the attack on Lubelius.

Later, he is forced into battle against Phobio and Barn while acting under the Eastern Empire’s orders.

Through these encounters, Footman becomes entangled with many major factions across the world.

Even as a subordinate figure, his power and actions significantly shape events in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
