Character Setting

Edit

Perv Asshat is a male antagonist in the light novel, manga, and anime series The Eminence in Shadow, serving as the fiancé of Rose Oriana and a high-ranking conspirator within the Oriana Kingdom who secretly belongs to the Cult of Diablos.

Perv Asshat is the second son of a duke family in the Oriana Kingdom and the official fiancé of one of the series’ heroines, Rose Oriana.

Behind this respectable façade, he is a member of the Cult of Diablos, acting as one of the front-line agents tasked with orchestrating the takeover of the Oriana Kingdom.

He serves as the kingdom’s chancellor, placing him at the political core of Oriana.

By the time he appears in the story, he has already reduced the Oriana king to a drug-controlled puppet and is close to completing his coup.

His plan involves using the drugged Oriana king as a tool at the Bushin Festival, having him assassinate the king of the Midgar Kingdom in order to sour relations between the two nations and spark a war.

However, this plot collapses due to several unforeseen factors, most notably the actions of Shadow and Rose.

At the Bushin Festival, Perv intends to activate his scheme by controlling the Oriana king and forcing him to murder the Midgar king in public.

This act is meant to trigger diplomatic catastrophe and pave the way for the Cult of Diablos and Perv’s faction to seize power amid the chaos.

The plan becomes difficult to execute when Iris Midgar unexpectedly invites Beatrix to an adjacent special seat, greatly increasing the risk of intervention.

On top of that, Rose Oriana abruptly kills the puppet Oriana king, destabilizing the carefully prepared scenario.

Shadow, having dropped his disguise as Cid Kagenou’s persona “Jimina Seinen,” then aids Rose in escaping.

With the festival incident foiled and his key asset lost, Perv is forced to retreat back to the Oriana Kingdom.

Events in the Light Novel (Book Version)

In the book version, after returning to Oriana, Perv continues his machinations by exploiting Reina Oriana, the queen.

Through her, he manages to capture Rose and attempts to use a special artifact known as the Contract Ring, a ring tied to the Oriana Kingdom and its royal line.

Perv’s ambition is to forcibly marry Rose and, using the Contract Ring, elevate himself to the rank of Round (a top member within the Cult of Diablos hierarchy).

However, the crucial Contract Ring is stolen by Shadow, and through a small mishap ends up in Rose’s hands instead.

The ring contains the last will of the Oriana king and vital records of Perv’s crimes and schemes.

When these secrets are exposed, public opinion turns against Perv, and he finds himself cornered and disgraced.

Ultimately, Perv and Reina Oriana are both deemed “no longer useful” by Mordred.

Mordred personally cuts them down, disposing of them once they have outlived their usefulness to the Cult.

Events in the Web Version

In the web novel version, his fate is even more grotesque and darkly comedic.

Perv is kidnapped by Shadow, who then tampers with his brain in a way that warps his consciousness.

Under this mental interference, Perv is forced to openly confess, in words matching his name, that he “wants his butt to be spanked.”

He dies while spilling this humiliating self-incriminating desire, making his end both brutal and absurd.

Events in the Anime Version

In the television anime adaptation of The Eminence in Shadow, the story follows the Bushin Festival and his retreat more closely to the book.

After Perv flees back to the Oriana Kingdom, there is a scene showing him being scolded harshly by Mordred, highlighting the power hierarchy between them.

The anime emphasizes Perv’s ambition and political cunning, but also his arrogance.

He is shown badmouthing Mordred behind his back, dismissing him as an “old fossil,” which underscores his overconfidence and lack of genuine loyalty.

Perv Asshat is portrayed as a highly capable and calculating schemer.

He seizes control of the kingdom’s core institutions, manipulates the royal family, and carefully engineers situations to push Rose Oriana into a corner.

He deliberately provokes and enrages Rose to make her act impulsively, injure herself, and fall into increasingly desperate circumstances.

This shows that he is not only politically savvy but also psychologically manipulative.

He is skilled enough in martial and tactical arts to discuss the combat abilities of Iris Midgar and “Jimina Seinen” on relatively equal footing.

This suggests that, besides his political influence, he has notable combat insight and battlefield awareness.

As a villain, he fits the series’ pattern where antagonists are repeatedly derailed by Cid/Shadow’s actions.

Despite his competence, he is ultimately ruined by unexpected interference from Shadow and Rose and ends up with a humiliating downfall.

The ironic thing about his character is that, in terms of villain competence, he is actually one of the more capable antagonists depicted.

Yet his skills are overshadowed by the sheer absurdity of his name and the way his schemes are destroyed in spectacular fashion.

The character’s name, Perv Asshat, is itself a pointed joke and a major source of fan reaction.

In the original naming joke, his name basically reads as “perverted masochist, butt bat,” making it a blatant gag.

Because of this, many readers and viewers, upon first hearing his name, jokingly interpret Rose Oriana stabbing him as nothing more than “their play escalating too far.”

This meta-humor has made his very introduction a moment of comedy among fans, even though the story itself treats the scene seriously.

Interestingly, in both the anime and the book version that the anime follows, there is no explicit depiction of Perv Asshat actually being a masochist.

His “perverted masochist” image is largely driven by his name, fan jokes, and especially his exaggerated fate in the web version.

His first spoken line in the anime is the line rendered in English as something like “Perv Asshat is fine.”

Delivered in a rich, charismatic voice by his voice actor, it leaves a ridiculous yet memorable impression, making many viewers burst out laughing.

Fans also often note that his character design and voice work together almost too perfectly.

The director reportedly decided on his voice casting after seeing the book’s illustrations, feeling that “with this design, using that voice was the only honest choice.”

In the manga adaptation, his design is adjusted to better match its more comedic, gag-oriented tone.

His signature moustache is removed, his lines are softer and rounder, and overall he is drawn to look somewhat younger and more comically inclined.

In the anime adaptation of The Eminence in Shadow, Perv Asshat is voiced by Sho Hayami.

Hayami’s deep and elegant voice contrasts sharply with the character’s absurd name and schemes, heightening the comedic effect.

His delivery of Perv’s lines, especially his early introductions, became a notable highlight among viewers.

The combination of cool, dignified voice acting and the outrageous name “Perv Asshat” has been widely discussed and shared by fans.
