Fortuna is Emilia’s foster mother and, by blood, her paternal aunt, being the younger sister of Emilia’s father.

She raised Emilia in the Elior Great Forest and became the central emotional pillar of the girl’s early life.

She lived around one hundred years before the main events of Re:Zero, sharing a hidden settlement in the Elior Great Forest with other elves.

By the time the main story begins, she has already died and appears only in flashbacks and memories.

Fortuna closely resembles Emilia, which is no coincidence given their blood relation.

She has silver hair and deep violet eyes, just like Emilia, but keeps her hair cut short, giving her a sharper, more mature look.

Her gaze is described as keen and piercing, which contrasts with her warm and affectionate personality.

As an elf, she has the typical long ears and youthful appearance associated with her race despite her age.

Fortuna is nurturing, protective, and deeply affectionate toward Emilia, treating her like a beloved daughter rather than a niece.

Her famous line to Emilia, “Emilia… you are my pride. My treasure…!” captures the depth of her love and the way she sees Emilia as both precious and admirable.

She is generally calm and composed, but when those she loves are threatened, she shows fierce determination and resolve.

Fortuna is not blindly hateful toward all members of the Witch Cult.

She uses this power to create and control ice, making her combat style visually similar to ice magic despite its fire attribute basis.

Her control is refined enough to be considered strong even among elves, who are generally talented with magic.

This strength, however, still proves insufficient when faced with the overwhelming power of Pandora and Regulus Corneas.

Emilia

Fortuna is Emilia’s foster mother and paternal aunt.

After the death of Emilia’s parents, Fortuna takes Emilia into her care and raises her in the Elior Great Forest.

She gives Emilia emotional security, daily care, and gentle discipline, shaping much of Emilia’s personality and values.

Emilia adores her, and their relationship is one of the most important emotional cores of Emilia’s backstory.

Emilia’s Parents

Fortuna is the younger sister of Emilia’s father, making her Emilia’s aunt by blood.

Pandora is implied to know things about Fortuna’s brother and his wife, connecting their deaths to Pandora and creating a deep grudge for Fortuna.

The deaths of her brother and sister-in-law are part of the complicated history between Fortuna and Pandora.

This tragedy also sets the stage for Fortuna becoming Emilia’s guardian.

Juice / Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti

Fortuna has a close, trusting relationship with Juice, the man who will later become the Sin Archbishop of Sloth, Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti.

Juice is depicted as a “moderate” member of the Witch Cult, and Fortuna respects and relies on him instead of treating him as an enemy.

She holds deep trust and affection toward Juice, seeing him as an ally and friend in protecting Emilia and the forest.

This relationship makes the later events that break Juice’s mind all the more tragic.

Pandora

Pandora, the Witch of Vainglory, is Fortuna’s greatest personal enemy.

Fortuna blames Pandora for the circumstances surrounding her brother’s and sister-in-law’s deaths.

When Pandora appears at the elf village, Fortuna immediately rejects her presence and confronts her.

Pandora’s terrifying authority, however, makes her nearly invincible, despite Fortuna’s resistance.

Regulus Corneas

Regulus Corneas, the Sin Archbishop of Greed in the Witch Cult, accompanies Pandora to the Elior Great Forest.

Fortuna and Juice recognize him and understand how dangerous he is.

Although Fortuna attempts to oppose him, Regulus and Pandora together create an overwhelming threat.

Their arrival marks the beginning of the disaster that destroys Fortuna’s peaceful life.

Life in the Elior Great Forest

About a hundred years before the main plot, Fortuna lives with Emilia and other elves in the Elior Great Forest.

Their community’s duty is to guard a mysterious “Seal,” which Pandora and the Witch Cult are very interested in.

Fortuna acts as both caretaker and protector, keeping Emilia away from the Seal and from outside dangers.

This secluded life is peaceful but built on many secrets, especially about Emilia’s origins and the purpose of the Seal.

The Attack on the Elior Great Forest

One day, Pandora arrives at the forest, accompanied by Regulus Corneas and the great magical beast known as the “Black Serpent.”

The Black Serpent is one of the three great mabeasts, alongside the White Whale and the Great Rabbit.

Fortuna and Juice already know Pandora and understand how catastrophic her presence is.

Pandora hints that she knows details about Fortuna’s brother, heavily implying past interactions and unresolved history.

Fortuna and Juice attempt to reject and drive out Pandora’s group.

However, the difference in power between them and Pandora’s side is far too great.

Fortuna’s Death

During the confrontation, Pandora uses her authority to manipulate perception and reality.

Through this power, she forces Juice to “misrecognize” Fortuna, making him believe she is Pandora.

Under the influence of this authority, Juice attacks and kills Fortuna, believing he is defeating Pandora.

When the illusion breaks and he realizes he has murdered Fortuna, the shock shatters his mind and leads to the birth of Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti as the broken Sin Archbishop of Sloth.

Fortuna’s death thus becomes a turning point not only in Emilia’s life, but in Juice’s transformation into one of the Witch Cult’s most infamous figures.

The aftermath of this tragedy leaves the forest devastated and Emilia frozen in ice for many years.

Emilia’s Memory and Later Revelation

After the incident, Pandora rewrites Emilia’s memories.

Because of this, Emilia forgets the true events of the Elior Great Forest, including the exact circumstances of Fortuna’s death.

These memories remain sealed until much later in the story, during the events of arc 4, when Emilia’s contract with Pack is broken.

Only then does Emilia fully recall Fortuna, her love, her words, and the tragedy that took her away.

Fortuna’s final words to Emilia—that she is her pride and her treasure—become a powerful emotional support when Emilia faces trials in the present.

The restored memories also bring Emilia painful guilt and sorrow, but they help her accept her past and move forward.

Fortuna appears primarily in flashback episodes and sections, as she is already dead by the start of the main Re:Zero storyline.

Because of this, many fans initially believed she would not play a large ongoing role, but her influence over Emilia’s character development is significant.

In fan discussions, there has been a popular theory that another character introduced later in the story might actually be Fortuna or closely connected to her.

This speculation was strong enough that many expected this later character to share Fortuna’s voice actress.

However, promotional material for the anime revealed that the later character is voiced by a different actress.

This casting decision weakened or disproved many of the “same person” theories, though fan speculation about Fortuna’s legacy and connections still continues.
