*Swallowed Star* is a Chinese science-fantasy animated series adapted from the novel by I Eat Tomatoes, following Feng Luo from a monster-ravaged Earth to the wider cosmos in a long-running saga of cultivation, survival, and interstellar war.

Chinese title: *Tunshi Xingkong*

English title: *Swallowed Star*

It is based on the web novel by I Eat Tomatoes and belongs to the “future world” branch of Chinese speculative fiction.

Although often marketed as science fiction, it is also strongly shaped by cultivation, power progression, and cosmic fantasy.

The original novel was serialized on Qidian from July 20, 2010 to July 21, 2012.

It ran for 1,547 chapters and about 4.7846 million Chinese characters.

The animated adaptation premiered in November 2020.

It later continued through multiple seasons, becoming one of the best-known long-form Chinese web novel adaptations.

The story begins in a near-future Earth devastated by the outbreak of the RR virus.

The disaster triggers the “Great Nirvana Period,” causing massive mutation across animal species and pushing humanity into fortified base cities.

In this brutal new world, martial artists become the defenders of civilization.

Young people dream of becoming fighters not for glory alone, but to protect their families from the constant threat of monsters.

At the center is Feng Luo, a teenager from an ordinary family.

After failing to follow the smooth path expected of him, he awakens spiritual power and begins an extraordinary ascent.

What starts as a survival tale on Earth steadily expands into a giant cosmic epic.

The scale grows from city ruins and monster hunting to clans, empires, secret inheritances, universe-level factions, and the fate of all creation.

The novel was the sixth long-form work by I Eat Tomatoes.

It marked a notable shift for the author from earlier xianxia-oriented writing into a more overtly futuristic and cosmic setting.

The author described the work as an expression of creative freedom rather than a strict genre project.

That helps explain why the story blends post-apocalyptic action, martial growth, family emotion, star travel, treasure hunting, and enormous cosmology.

The novel later received multiple print editions.

A major print series began in May 2012 through Hubei Children’s Publishing House.

A later “collector’s edition” line was published by Anhui Literature and Art Publishing House beginning in 2019.

The franchise also expanded into comics, games, and animation.

Earth Arc

The earliest part of the story focuses on life after global collapse.

Humanity survives inside base cities while mutant beasts dominate the wilderness.

Feng Luo starts from a relatively humble position and trains as both a fighter and a spiritual master.

His first major motivations are deeply personal: protect his parents, support Hua Luo, and create a better life for the people he loves.

This section is one of the series’ biggest hooks.

It combines school-age pressure, urban danger, survival missions, monster battles, and the excitement of rapid growth.

Inheritance and Rise

A decisive turning point comes when Feng Luo receives the inheritance of the master of Yunmo Planet, Hu Yanbo.

This pushes him far beyond ordinary Earth fighters and opens the door to a much larger destiny.

He eventually becomes one of Earth’s strongest figures.

His battle against the world-threatening Golden-Horned Beast is one of the early story’s most famous events.

After losing his original human body, Feng Luo survives by seizing the Golden-Horned Beast body.

From there, the story fully embraces its huge cultivation-cosmos framework.

Entering the Universe

Once Earth’s coordinates are exposed, outside powers begin to interfere.

The planet is no longer an isolated battlefield but part of a vast and dangerous interstellar order.

Feng Luo buys Earth’s ownership rights, confronts the threat from the Nolanshan family, and formally steps into the universe.

He learns alien languages, explores planets, gathers resources, and adapts to the brutal hierarchy of cosmic civilization.

He later joins the Virtual Universe Company.

That move is a huge leap in both status and narrative scale, bringing him into the center of elite human cultivation systems.

Cosmic Warfare and Higher Realms

As the story advances, Feng Luo rises through major ranks including universe-level, domain lord, world lord, immortal, universe venerable, and beyond.

He gains powerful companions, body doubles, secret techniques, and treasures that define later arcs.

He becomes known under several famous identities and titles.

Among them, “Blade River King” is especially iconic.

The middle and late sections feature genius competitions, battlefield campaigns, ancient inheritances, hidden realms, and factional conflict among top species.

Eventually, Feng Luo reaches the level of a Universe Master and becomes one of the decisive powers in the cosmic sea.

The Realm Beast Crisis

One of the climactic threats is the disaster caused by the Realm Beasts.

These beings devour miniature universes and represent a civilization-ending menace far beyond ordinary war.

To stop them, Feng Luo works with figures such as Sitting Mountain Guest and Original Ancestor.

This phase emphasizes strategy, willpower, ultimate treasures, and the burden of protecting an entire race.

He ultimately subdues Morosa, the kingly Realm Beast.

That victory is one of the defining achievements of his life.

Transcending Reincarnation

Near the end of the novel, Feng Luo surpasses the cycle of reincarnation.

As the original universe approaches destruction, he leaves aboard Star Tower and heads toward the Origin Continent.

The ending is deliberately open.

Rather than closing everything off, it points toward an even larger stage beyond the universe sea.

Feng Luo

Feng Luo is the undisputed lead of the series.

He begins as a determined young man from an ordinary family and grows into a legendary cosmic powerhouse.

One of his most distinctive traits is his balance of ambition and emotional warmth.

He is not written as a cold machine for battle; family, loyalty, and responsibility remain central to his identity.

His development is also unusually layered.

He is at different times a human fighter, a spiritual master, the possessor of the Golden-Horned Beast body, and the owner of multiple powerful clones.

This multi-body structure becomes one of the series’ signature mechanics.

It allows the story to combine stealth, direct combat, endurance, law comprehension, and large-scale strategic power in one protagonist.

His wife is Xin Xu, and his immediate family includes Hongguo Luo, Xinlan Gong, and Hua Luo.

That family thread is important throughout the work and helps ground its massive cosmic setting.

Family and Close Relationships

A major emotional foundation of the story is Feng Luo’s home life.

His rise is never just about becoming stronger for its own sake.

His father Hongguo Luo, mother Xinlan Gong, brother Hua Luo, and wife Xin Xu all matter to the plot.

This family-centered emotional line distinguishes the series from more detached power fantasies.

Teachers and Mentors

Several mentor figures shape his growth.

Among the most important are Hu Yanbo, True Yan King, Chaos City Lord, and Sitting Mountain Guest.

These mentors represent different stages of his development.

Some teach technique, some open doors to institutions, and some reshape his place in the cosmic order.

Major Powers

The story’s world is packed with large organizations.

Among the most important are the Virtual Universe Company, Hong Alliance, Ancestral God School, the Starry Sky Behemoth Alliance, and various race-based coalitions.

These groups matter because advancement is never purely individual.

Status, resources, inheritance opportunities, and survival often depend on where one stands among them.

One of the most famous parts of *Swallowed Star* is its giant, highly structured power system.

It is intricate, but also one of the reasons fans enjoy the series so much.

Early Levels

The early human progression starts with trainee ranks and moves into fighter ranks such as warrior, warlord, and war god.

These stages dominate the Earth arc and are closely tied to physical force, speed, and combat technique.

Planetary and Stellar Growth

Above the Earth-based system are planetary, stellar, universe, domain lord, and world lord levels.

At these stages, characters begin using domains, world power, and increasingly direct contact with cosmic laws.

Immortality and Beyond

Past world lord comes immortality, then universe venerable, universe overlord, universe master, true god, void true god, eternal true god, and even higher states.

Later material also references chaos-level rulers, god kings, and still more distant transcendental stages.

This hierarchy gives the story its famous sense of escalation.

It is not just “stronger every arc,” but “entirely new layers of existence every arc.”

Laws and Comprehension

Power is not based on raw force alone.

Law comprehension is essential, especially the study of elemental and higher laws such as space and time.

At lower and middle stages, much of cultivation revolves around understanding these laws.

At higher stages, the focus shifts from law comprehension to deeper understanding of cosmic evolution and ultimate principles.

Spirit Masters and Warriors

The series also distinguishes between physical fighters and spiritual masters.

Spiritual masters are especially powerful in early arcs because they can attack from range, control weapons, and exert huge tactical pressure.

Feng Luo is notable because he combines both paths.

That makes him unusually versatile from the very beginning.

Earth After the RR Virus

The setting starts with a transformed Earth where mutated beasts have overwhelmed normal civilization.

Humanity survives inside giant base cities while wilderness zones become hunting grounds and death traps.

This premise gives the earliest arcs a strong post-apocalyptic flavor.

It also makes the protagonist’s growth feel urgent and practical rather than abstract.

The Wider Universe

As the story expands, readers are introduced to empires, training camps, auction houses, cosmic secret realms, battlefield zones, and ancient ruins.

The universe is presented as vast, hierarchical, and often indifferent to weak civilizations.

A recurring appeal of *Swallowed Star* is this sense of scale.

A character can go from surviving a ruined city to navigating powers that span star regions and universe seas.

Secret Realms and Ancient Inheritances

The world is full of mysterious places: ancient relics, dangerous secret realms, divine schools, and inheritance sites left by long-dead powers.

These locations often function as both plot engines and reward systems.

They are also where the series leans most heavily into adventure.

Treasure hunts, trials, and hidden legacies are constant highlights.

The animated adaptation of *Swallowed Star* began broadcast on November 29, 2020.

It was directed initially by Shen Leping, with later seasons also involving Wu Bilun and Shao Guanhua.

The release sequence listed in the source material is as follows.

Season 1 premiered on November 29, 2020; Season 2 on December 29, 2021; Season 3 on September 13, 2022; Season 4 on October 3, 2023; Season 5 on August 6, 2024; and Season 6 on February 4, 2025.

The anime helped bring the franchise to a broader audience beyond novel readers.

It also strengthened the series’ status as a major Chinese web novel IP.

A mobile game titled *Swallowed Star* was released in 2018.

Another game, *Swallowed Star: Dawn*, launched in May 2023.

There is also a comic adaptation.

A collected comic edition was published by Modern Press.

These adaptations show how firmly the franchise entered the Chinese IP ecosystem.

The property moved from web fiction into multimedia entertainment over more than a decade.

The first major print publication line began in 2012 through Hubei Children’s Publishing House.

That line was divided into multiple sub-series such as Awakening, Nirvana, Secret Realm, and Rise.

A later collector’s edition began through Anhui Literature and Art Publishing House in 2019.

That edition continued across many numbered volumes into the 2020s.

The original web version remained highly popular on Qidian.

By January 7, 2026, it had accumulated more than 8.0029 million total recommendations on the platform.

*Swallowed Star* became one of I Eat Tomatoes’ most influential representative works.

It helped cement his status as one of the defining “great god” authors of Chinese web fiction.

The work is especially important in the history of long-form progression fantasy on Chinese platforms.

Its popularity reinforced the viability of massive serialized narratives built around steady power growth, cliffhangers, and ever-larger world expansion.

It also had a strong role in the development and spread of “upgrade flow” fiction.

Its formula of family motivation, relentless progression, inherited techniques, institutional advancement, and cosmic scaling influenced many later works.

Academic and media commentary has often noted its hybrid nature.

One cited assessment described it as a large-scale “beginner-friendly” web novel wearing the outer coat of science fiction while actually operating with many xianxia and fantasy-cultivation conventions.

The novel first reached the Qidian homepage hotspot cover recommendation on August 1, 2010.

In October 2010, it won first place on Qidian’s September monthly ticket ranking.

It repeatedly placed highly in recommendation, activity, and monthly ticket charts during serialization.

Its web popularity remained visible long after completion.

In 2021, it was included in the China Online Literature Influence List: IP Adaptation Influence List.

In 2023, it was digitally collected by the Shanghai Library.

In January 2025, it was selected for the 2024 Online Literature Masterpiece List.

In February 2025, it was also named among the 20 Glory IPs of Yuewen’s Tenth Anniversary.

The biggest appeal of *Swallowed Star* is how boldly it scales up.

It starts with a teenager trying to survive in a ruined world and ends with battles tied to the fate of universes.

It also knows how to keep that scale emotionally readable.

Even when the setting reaches absurd cosmic heights, the story keeps circling back to family, mentorship, rivalry, and responsibility.

For fans of long progression stories, it offers nearly everything: monsters, training arcs, treasures, tournaments, body upgrades, clone abilities, giant organizations, ancient mysteries, and universe-spanning wars.

That mix is exactly why the franchise remained so durable across novel, anime, comic, and game forms.
