Kowloon Generic Romance

Creator Jun Mayuzuki first discovered Kowloon Walled City through the PlayStation game "Kowloon's Gate" during her school years.

Her fascination with the labyrinthine, lawless architecture of old Hong Kong merged with memories of trips to Taiwan, influencing the atmosphere of the manga.

Initially, the story concept began while she was still working on her previous hit series.

The story unfolds in an alternate world where "Generic Earth (Terra)" has been constructed in outer space, echoing the original but shrouded in its own mysterious atmosphere.

Here, Kowloon emerges as a city rebuilt after demolition, housing a unique cast and hidden from those who lack regret in their hearts.

The city operates almost as a pocket dimension, mimicking eternal summer and mixing retro aesthetics with futuristic conspiracies.

Reiko Kujirai, a 32-year-old woman working at "Wang Lai Real Estate" in Kowloon, quietly harbors feelings for her colleague, Hajime Kudou.

One day, she stumbles upon a stunning secret: another woman with her exact name and appearance—Kujirai B—once lived a parallel life in the same neighborhood.

With no memory of her own past, Reiko becomes consumed by questions of identity and existence, especially as the truth about clones (Zirconians) and a mysterious city reconstruction comes to light.

Her journey is not only about everyday love and office routine, but also about unraveling the secrets hidden in this counterfeit Kowloon.

Second Kowloon Walled City:

After Kowloon Walled City's demolition in 1994, residents reconstructed a replica city with perpetual summer and odd laws of reality. Some people can see this city, while others only perceive it as ruins—depending on their sense of regret.

Zirconians:

Rumored clone humans created in secret under the "Generic Terra" project. When a Zirconian and their original meet, the clone disappears. Many Kowloon residents are suspected to be Zirconians. Since Reiko’s original has already died, hers is called "Generic" by Hebinuma.

Manga

KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE has been serialized since late 2019, with 11 volumes published as of April 2025 by Shueisha under the Young Jump Comics label.

TV Anime

Produced by Arvo Animation, the anime began airing in April 2025 on TV Tokyo and is available for streaming on multiple platforms including Abema, Disney+, Netflix, and more.

Key staff include director Yoshiaki Iwasaki, series composer Jin Tanaka, character designer Yuka Shibata, and music by Ryouhei Sataka.

Voice talent features Haruka Shiraishi as Reiko Kujirai and Tomokazu Sugita as Hajime Kudou.

Live-Action Movie

Premiering in August 2025, the movie stars Riho Yoshioka as Reiko Kujirai and Kouji Mizukami as Hajime Kudou, directed by Chihiro Ikeda. The cast also includes notable actors such as Shuntaro Yanagi and Minami Umezawa.

“Generic Radio” is hosted monthly by Haruka Shiraishi and distributed on Otosen and YouTube since April 2025.

Scenography is heavily influenced by photo collections of the old Kowloon Walled City and the creator’s travels in Taiwan, blending both real and imagined details.

This results in a setting that feels both otherworldly and grounded in authentic nostalgia.

The anime's opening theme "Summertime Ghost" is performed by Wednesday Campanella, written and composed by Hidefumi Kenmochi.

The ending theme "Koi no Retronym" and episode-specific song "Polaris Only for Me" are sung by mekakushe and arranged by Ryouhei Sataka.

With over 1.2 million copies sold, KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE has been celebrated for its mature depiction of romance, atmospheric art, and mysterious sci-fi elements.

Its multi-media adaptations have drawn both longtime manga fans and new audiences, further expanding the series' cultural footprint.
