Kakegurui is a Japanese manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, serialized since 2014 in Monthly Gangan Joker.

The story takes place at the prestigious Hyakkaou Private Academy, where social hierarchy is based on gambling skills, not academics or sports.

The alluring transfer student, Yumeko Jabami, shakes up the established order, revealing her true nature as a compulsive high-stakes gambler.

This unique blend of suspense, psychological games, and eccentric characters has inspired numerous spin-offs, anime adaptations, dramas, films, and even stage plays.

Homura Kawamoto originally conceived the series based on his earlier web manga, "Dominium: Gokusai Shoujo Tobaku-den," which provided the foundational concepts and some character archetypes for Kakegurui.

The manga debuted in the April 2014 issue of Monthly Gangan Joker, quickly gaining popularity for its bold themes and unorthodox heroines.

By March 2021, the franchise had surpassed 6.2 million copies in circulation, cementing its status as a modern hit in the gambling thriller genre.

Hyakkaou Private Academy is an elite institution attended by children from influential political and financial families.

The school is ruled by a student council led by Kirari Momobami, who enforces a strict caste system determined by gambling prowess.

Success brings fortune and influence, while failure means mockery, humiliation, and even the loss of personal rights—dubbed “Housepets.”

Extravagant gambling games are used to shape future leaders' negotiation, risk-taking, and psychological manipulation skills.

Yumeko Jabami arrives at Hyakkaou Private Academy, appearing gentle and refined but quickly revealing her thrill-seeking addiction to high-risk gambling.

She challenges top students—and the frighteningly sharp student council—to increasingly dangerous games, overturning their cheats and exposing dark secrets.

Mary Saotome, once the class queen bee, is humbled by Yumeko but eventually becomes her rival and unconventional friend.

Key story arcs feature audacious games against student council members like Sayaka Igarashi, idol Yumemi Yumemite, enforcer Midari Ikishima, and even a high-stakes election involving the powerful Momobami clan.

Spin-offs like Kakegurui Twin offer a look into Mary's backstory and ascent within the Academy, while other side stories highlight characters' unique approaches to betting and survival.

  • Housepet: The derogatory label for students who fail in gambling and cannot pay their debts, required to wear a tag denoting their low rank (“Pochi” for boys, “Mike” for girls).
  • Life Schedule Plan: A draconian contract the student council imposes on debtors, dictating their personal futures after graduation unless their debts are paid.
  • Student Council: The ruling body at the Academy, wielding immense authority and manipulating gambling rules to suit their agenda.
  • Momobami Clan: An influential family conglomerate vying for leadership within the Academy, each with their own approach to gambling, from torture and trickery to art and performance.
  • Official Match: A special privilege for housepets, allowing them to challenge anyone (including council members) to one formal, high-stakes gambling match.
  • Debt Settlement Auction: A special event where debtors have the chance to redistribute their debts through group gambling, often leading to shocking upsets.

Kakegurui has expanded into several successful spin-offs, such as Kakegurui Twin, Kakegurui (Tentative), and Kakegurui Midari, each exploring different characters and themes from the main series.

The story was adapted into a hit anime (two seasons, produced by MAPPA), multiple live-action TV dramas, and two live-action films—all featuring unique plotlines and casting many prominent young actors.

A stage adaptation will premiere in 2025 at Theatre H, led by Kanisawa Moko from ≠ME as Yumeko Jabami.

Additionally, an original Netflix web anime, "Kakegurui Twin," and the mobile game "Kakegurui Cheating Road" further expanded the franchise's appeal.

In 2024, Netflix announced "Kakegurui BET," an international live-action drama with a new cast, set for release in May 2025.

The anime and many live-action adaptations were driven by strong fan interest and the show's distinctive, stylized visuals, with MAPPA handling animation duties.

High-profile actors such as Minami Hamabe (Yumeko) and Elaiza Ikeda (Kirari/Momobami twins) brought characters to life in dramatizations.

Unique portrayals of psychological tension and over-the-top facial expressions became series trademarks, captivating audiences.

Gambling games were carefully crafted by the author with input from professional board game designers for authenticity and excitement.

The anime featured energetic opening and ending themes, including "Deal with the devil" by Tia (Season 1 OP), "Kono Yubi Tomare" by JUNNA (Season 2 OP), and electronic group TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-FUND for various endings and insert songs.

Live-action productions used songs by BIGMAMA, PassCode, and others to accentuate the dramatic stakes and eccentric energy of the series.

Kakegurui’s critical acclaim includes placing third in the 2nd Next Manga Awards (Comic Division), as well as widespread recognition for its stylish adaptation and magnetic characters.

Kakegurui is credited with revitalizing the gambling manga subgenre, especially among new readers drawn to its intense mind games and flamboyant character designs.

Its reputation for over-the-top expression, dramatic plot twists, and psychological duels earned it enduring media and merchandising success.

The series remains ongoing, spawning a loyal global fandom and influencing works across anime, drama, games, and fashion.

Merchandise, official anthologies, and spin-off novels further enriched the Kakegurui universe, allowing fans to explore different facets of its dangerous and alluring world.

The franchise has even inspired collaborations in gaming, pachislot machines, and themed cafes, demonstrating its widespread cultural impact.
