Little Witch Academia is an original anime created by animation studio TRIGGER, first released in theaters in 2013 as part of the "Anime Mirai" project. The story follows Atsuko "Akko" Kagari, a lively Japanese girl with little magical talent, who dreams of becoming a witch like her childhood idol, Shiny Chariot. The franchise blossomed into follow-up films, a 25-episode TV series, manga, and games, captivating fans worldwide with its enchanting mix of humor, heartfelt character growth, and a vibrant school life setting filled with magic and adventure.

Little Witch Academia was born from "Anime Mirai," a project to foster young animators sponsored by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Director Yoh Yoshinari, renowned for his work on titles like FLCL and Gurren Lagann, helmed the concept, direction, and character design.

The creators wanted to merge the theme of trainee animators with the classic idea of young witches, reimagining the struggles of new magical students as a metaphor for creative growth.

The original short's infectious charm won worldwide attention, resulting in a successful Kickstarter campaign that funded a sequel. This international fan support directly influenced the franchise's expansion into more films, TV, manga, and games.

Set in the magical Luna Nova Academy, a prestigious school for training witches, the world blends fantasy with modern elements.

Magic exists alongside technology, but it is becoming obsolete in the eyes of society.

Luna Nova welcomes students from various backgrounds, both magical lineages and ordinary families, with tough curriculum and unique school traditions.

The universe features magical items like the Shiny Rod, ley lines (energy currents for witches to fly on), legendary magical artifacts, and fantastical creatures like dragons and mandrakes.

Anime Mirai Short

Akko, admiring Shiny Chariot’s magic shows as a child, enters Luna Nova Academy.

She struggles with basic magic and is often mocked by top student Diana Cavendish and even her friends Lotte Jansson and Sucy Manbavaran.

During a practical exam in a labyrinth, Diana accidentally releases an ancient dragon. Akko discovers the discarded Shiny Rod and, urged on by her teacher Ursula, manages to rescue the school using the Rod’s true power—saving everyone and earning her peers' respect.

The Enchanted Parade Movie

Akko and her friends get into trouble and are assigned to turn the local town’s witch parade, historically hostile, into a celebration.

Akko faces quarrels with her friends and prejudice from townsfolk, but with help from new allies Amanda O'Neill, Constanze, and Jasminka, she stages a spectacular parade.

A magical mishap resurrects a giant golem, causing chaos, but Akko’s teamwork—and the lessons learned about believing in herself—save the day.

TV Anime Series

Sixteen-year-old Akko enters Luna Nova with optimism, despite her lack of magical skill and inability to fly on a broom.

She encounters the enigmatic Shiny Rod in a forbidden forest and, with Ursula's (secretly Shiny Chariot's) guidance, starts unlocking its mysterious powers.

Akko works relentlessly through obstacles, wins friends like Diana's respect, and becomes embroiled in a conflict between Shiny Chariot (Ursula) and the innovator teacher Croix Meridies, who pushes modern magic and harbors a troubled past.

As tensions rise, Akko’s unwavering belief in magic and friendship helps overcome the forces threatening to destabilize the magical world, culminating in an epic finale where unity, faith, and a believing heart become the ultimate magic.

  • Luna Nova Academy: Prestigious witches' school, historically selective but now open to non-magical families due to declining enrolment.
  • Shiny Rod: Legendary magical staff, central to Akko’s growth.
  • Ley Lines: Magical energy highways for witches’ brooms and spells.
  • Shiny Chariot: Akko’s childhood idol, real name Chariot Du Nord, now living as the teacher Ursula.
  • Seven Words of Arcturus: Secret powers sealed within the Shiny Rod, requiring heart and purpose to unlock.
  • SSS (Sorcery Solution System): Croix Meridies's system for efficiently using magic with limited resources.
  • Grand Triskelion: The ultimate world-altering magic sealed in the Arcturus Forest.
  • Mana: The core magical energy source for witches.

Little Witch Academia spans:

  • Two theatrical films (2013, 2015)
  • TV anime series (25 episodes, 2017)
  • Multiple manga adaptations in various magazines
  • Novels (Tsubasa Bunko's youth novelization)
  • Video games: "Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time" (PS4, Steam) and "Little Witch Academia VR: Racing on Broomstick Stars"
  • Web events, special programs, and collaborations with cafes and merchandise pop-ups

Produced by animation studio TRIGGER, with director Yoh Yoshinari at the creative helm.

The first short was part of an animator training initiative, intending to both showcase and train new talent.

Success led to international crowdfunding, a rare feat for Japanese anime at the time.

With growing popularity, the team expanded the universe with more ambitious projects, like the TV series and games, while retaining the original staff and spirit.

Its international popularity fueled more anime productions and merchandise.

Little Witch Academia succeeded in bringing together all ages, becoming one of TRIGGER's most iconic works.

It revitalized interest in all-ages magical girl stories and inspired a new wave of imaginative, character-driven fantasies.
