Plus-Sized Elf is a Japanese comedy manga created by Synecdoche.

The manga first ran online on Comic Gum from 2016 to 2020, before moving through several digital platforms and continuing under the title "New Plus-Sized Elf."

Blending modern Japan with fantasy, it follows Elfuda, a elf who becomes addicted to food from the human world, resulting in weight gain that prevents her from returning home.

With hilarious characters and relatable dieting adventures, the series exploded in popularity, sparking an anime adaptation in 2024.

Synecdoche launched Plus-Sized Elf in 2016, inspired by everyday eating temptations and health challenges.

The author mixes personal observations with fantasy settings, using mythical beings to explore modern lifestyle issues such as diet and body image.

The series was serialized on Comic Gum, moved to NewsCrunch, and later transferred to Akita Shoten’s digital magazine “Doko Demo Young Champion.”

The story is set in modern Japan, where gate-like portals connect Earth and various fantasy worlds.

Creatures such as elves, ogres, dark elves, mermaids, and plant folk cross into Japan.

Once here, they discover that the delicious human food is nearly irresistible.

To return home, these visitors must maintain the same weight as when they arrived—but Japanese snacks and fast food often thwart their plans.

Tomoatsu Naoe works at “Smiley Boa,” a relaxation and chiropractic clinic in Tokyo.

His main clientele? Plus-sized women from different worlds, each struggling with their weight thanks to Japanese cuisine.

Elfuda, a beautiful elf archer, overeats fries and can’t fit back through the portal to her homeland.

She becomes Tomoatsu’s first (and most challenging) patient.

Together, they embark on a fun journey of exercise, dieting, and self-discovery, joined by a dark elf named Kuroeda, the giant and gentle ogre Olga, the fishmonger mermaid Melo, and many more.

  • "Smiley Boa": The wellness clinic where Tomoatsu works and where the mystical cast gathers to diet and recover.
  • “Portal Weight Rule”: Only by maintaining the weight at the time of interdimensional travel can a being return home.
  • "Potato Mode": Elfuda’s insatiable craving for fried potatoes—a recurring gag and her greatest dieting obstacle.

The manga was collected into 8 volumes by Wani Books for volumes 1–7 and continued under Akita Shoten for volume 8 and the New Plus-Sized Elf sequel series.

The anime adaptation was produced by Elias Studio and aired in 2024 on TOKYO MX and other platforms.

It features three different version edits for TV, streaming, and premium streaming, plus a mini anime spin-off and an official radio program hosted by Elfuda’s voice actress.

Director Toshikatsu Tokoro helmed the anime, while Yuuki Takabayashi handled series composition.

Character designs were provided by Katsuyuki Sato.

The soundtrack was composed by Cheru Watanabe, adding quirky and upbeat tones to match the series’ comedic spirit.

King Records oversaw music production, reflecting the anime’s lighthearted, energetic vibe.

The opening theme “Fried☆Pride” is performed by REAL AKIBA BOYZ, featuring Kayo Taguchi and AiRyA.

The closing theme “Everyone DE Diet” is sung by the series’ main cast—together forming the group “Demo Tabeta-i.”

Both songs capture the playful struggles of weight loss and the temptations of tasty treats.

Plus-Sized Elf gained a cult following for its relatable blend of fantasy comedy and real-world dieting struggles.

Fans praise the cast’s unique personalities—especially Elfuda’s earnest but hilarious efforts to lose weight.

The show’s positive, body-neutral tone and accessible humor have been celebrated in both manga and anime communities.

There is also a web radio show titled “Plus-Sized Elf Can't Lose Weight On The Radio Either!” hosted by Elfuda’s voice actress, provided for fans who want even more behind-the-scenes fun.

Blu-ray box and full soundtrack releases are set for late 2024.

The series’ punchline—“It’s not just magic, sometimes it’s metabolism!”—captures its quirky spirit perfectly.
