Spy Classroom is a Japanese light novel series written by Takemachi and illustrated by Tomari, published by Fantasia Bunko (KADOKAWA) since January 2020.

It revolves around a group of girl spies, each with unique flaws and skills, trained by the self-proclaimed "world's strongest spy," Klaus.

The story combines espionage, action, and psychological warfare in a post-war world where covert operations replace traditional warfare.

Spy Classroom has inspired several manga adaptations, anime television seasons aired in 2023, and a stage play in 2024, gaining broad popularity with over 1.35 million copies in circulation worldwide as of November 2023.

The series was originally submitted to the 32nd Fantasia Awards under the title "Spies Are Sweetly Tempted by the Whole School’s Beauties."

Initially, it focused on a male protagonist surviving in a girls’ spy school, but it was thoroughly rewritten upon publication.

Takemachi was inspired by his love of mystery and the compatibility of spy stories with suspense and mind games, especially after seeing works like "Joker Game" and "Princess Principal."

He also ensured the main character, Klaus, and the main heroine, Lily, provided complementary but distinct perspectives in the story.

Set in a world where a great war has ended, nations now rely on spies instead of direct conflict, engaging in an "information war" rather than battles with swords or guns.

Spies are valued assets, and countries specialize in "Impossible Missions" with extremely low success rates and high death rates.

The Din Republic, the main country, establishes elite spy teams to deal with these dangerous operations, leading to the formation of "Lamplight," a team built from "failed" spy trainees.

Following the end of a massive world war, nations have abandoned traditional warfare in favor of spy operations.

Klaus, the Republic’s strongest spy, forms Lamplight, a team of failed trainees—all young girls deemed unfit elsewhere.

The team’s first operation is to steal a biological weapon from the Galgad Empire, a mission with a deadly history.

While Klaus is unmatched as a spy, he is terrible at teaching, forcing the girls to learn through practical attempts to defeat him.

As the story unfolds, the girls face betrayal, assassination plots, and must overcome their shortcomings, gaining confidence and skill.

Each volume typically focuses on one or more girls, exploring their backgrounds, motivations, and specialization—such as Lily’s poison expertise, Grete’s disguise abilities, or Thea’s negotiation and mind-reading.

The narrative spotlights teamwork, trust issues, and the personal growth of each character as they take on perilous undercover operations.

Impossible Mission:

A mission with less than a 10% chance of survival, even for professional spies. Failure is nearly guaranteed.

Lamplight:

A special team formed by Klaus, composed of female trainees who flunked out of their spy schools.

Each has a unique codename and specialty—ranging from disguise, poisoning, gadget-making, animal communication, to mind-reading.

Phoenix:

Another elite spy team made of top graduates from the spy school, rivals to Lamplight.

Light Novels:

Ongoing since January 2020, with 17 volumes released (including 12 main and 5 short story volumes as of October 2024).

Manga:

Multiple manga adaptations exist:

  • Main story (by Kaname Seu) covers the first arc.
  • Second, third, and fourth arcs have different illustrators and focus, following the structure of the novels.

Anime:

Produced by studio feel., directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi.

Season 1 aired from January to March 2023, and Season 2 aired from July to September 2023, each with 12 episodes.

Theanime closely follows the novels, with some adaptation for the TV format.

Stage Play:

"A Spy Classroom" stage adaptation was performed at the Hakuhinkan Theatre from January 20–28, 2024, focusing on the events of the first volume.

The move from a male-centric, school-harem setup to a team of flawed female spies was driven by the publisher's feedback and Takemachi’s own desire to experiment.

The characters were redesigned to break common tropes—each appearing as an “underdog” but with a hidden talent vital to undercover work.

The first story arc was planned out from the beginning, with later arcs continuing the pattern of focusing on different girls' growth.

For the anime:

  • Opening song “Tomoshibi” by nonoc (Season 1) and "Rakuen" by nonoc (Season 2).
  • Endings were performed by different artists, including Konomi Suzuki and the main cast, with special ending themes assigned to character-centric episodes (e.g., Erna, Sibylla, Thea, Annette, Lily).

  • Won the Grand Prize at the 32nd Fantasia Awards, gaining early recognition before publication.
  • Ranked highly in the “Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!” guidebook in 2021 (2nd in new works and overall) and continued to perform well in subsequent years.

Spy Classroom quickly became a hit, selling over 100,000 copies within six months and exceeding 1.35 million copies—including digital and global sales—by late 2023.

Reviewers praised its intriguing world, strong character development, and mix of suspense and action.

The series is celebrated for making “impossible missions” and spy tactics fun, blending humor with genuinely clever storytelling.

It has fostered a dedicated fanbase, led to official collaborations, cafes, merchandise, and even a real-life puzzle event.

Comic and anime adaptations have expanded the audience.

Special collaborations included themed cafes, Red Cross blood donation drives, karaoke events, and crossovers with games like D4DJ Groovy Mix and Elemental Story.

Figurines and fanbooks have also been released, cementing the series as a notable contemporary light novel success.
