Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club- is a Japanese anime series produced by Kyoto Animation.

The story centers around a group of high school boys, united by their passion for swimming and the bonds they form in their newly-established swim club.

Originally inspired by the light novel "High☆Speed!" by Koji Oji, the anime explores themes of friendship, rivalry, chasing dreams, and self-discovery.

There are three main TV seasons and several theatrical films, each expanding on the journeys of the main characters from adolescence into early adulthood.

Fans worldwide have fallen in love with the vibrant visuals, charismatic cast, and emotionally-charged races.

Free! was born following the second Kyoto Animation Awards, where the light novel "High☆Speed!" received a special encouragement prize in 2011.

Before the anime announcement, a mysterious "swimming animation" commercial aired during "Tamako Market," sparking online buzz due to the appearance of attractive male characters.

This hype eventually led to the official reveal in April 2013.

Kyoto Animation’s involvement marked its first project in collaboration with Osaka-based broadcasters, further drawing attention.

Set primarily in the fictional Iwatobi Town—a stand-in for Iwami Town in Tottori Prefecture—the anime seamlessly blends real-life Japanese seaside scenery with a vivid, colorful animation style.

Locations include Iwatobi High School, the stylish but competitive Samezuka Academy, and local landmarks such as swim clubs and scenic coastlines.

From picturesque rivers to busy school corridors, the setting becomes as memorable as the characters themselves.

Season 1

Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, and Nagisa Hazuki once shared victory as children in a swim club.

Reunited at Iwatobi High School, they discover their old club will be demolished.

Digging up their time-capsule trophy, they encounter Rin Matsuoka, a childhood friend turned rival.

Inspired, they create the Iwatobi Swim Club, recruit Rei Ryugazaki, and chase competition glory while wrestling with conflicting dreams, personal setbacks, and the haunting question: what does swimming mean to each of them?

Season 2: Eternal Summer

As new challenges loom, both Iwatobi and Samezuka aim for nationals.

Rin becomes Samezuka’s captain; his old friend, Sosuke Yamazaki, transfers in.

Haruka struggles under the weight of others' expectations and future anxieties.

Through heart-to-heart talks and a transformative trip to Australia, the team finds meaning in swimming for themselves and each other.

The season culminates in their final high school relay and decisions about their next steps in life.

Season 3: Dive to the Future

Now university students, Haruka and his friends navigate new teams and rivalries.

Haruka joins Hidaka University’s swim team, reconnects with former classmate Asahi Shiina, and meets Ikuya Kirishima, an old friend turned distant.

The drama intensifies as they seek reconciliation, personal purpose, and a place among Japan's swimming elite.

Friendships are tested, but new bonds form as everyone strives for the global stage.

  • Iwatobi Swim Club: The central high school swim team, known for their strong friendships and underdog spirit.
  • Samezuka Academy: Prestigious rival school, home to talented swimmers like Rin and Sosuke.
  • Relay: A medley relay race holds special emotional value, symbolizing teamwork and shared dreams.
  • Fr (Freestyle): The signature stroke of both Haruka and Rin, representing individuality and self-expression.

Free! includes three main anime seasons:

  • Free! (2013)
  • Free! -Eternal Summer- (2014)
  • Free! -Dive to the Future- (2018)

The films expand on the characters’ backstories and futures:

  • High-Speed! –Free! Starting Days–
  • Free! –Timeless Medley–: Bonds & Promises
  • Free! –Take Your Marks–
  • Free! –Road to the World– Dream
  • Free! –the Final Stroke– (Parts 1 & 2)

Doubling as a multimedia phenomenon, Free! also features light novels, drama CDs, radio shows, guides, and lavish illustration books.

Kyoto Animation helmed all animated entries, renowned for lifelike water animation, expressive character designs, and emotive storytelling.

Directors Hiroko Utsumi (seasons 1 and 2) and Eisaku Kawanami (season 3, movies) led the team.

Character design and overall visual supervision were handled by Futoshi Nishiya.

Composer Tatsuya Kato provided a stirring, energetic score that brings race scenes to life.

Each season features hit music by OLDCODEX (notably "Rage On" and "Dried Up Youthful Fame") as opening themes.

Ending songs like "SPLASH FREE" and those performed by the main cast as STYLE FIVE became instant fan favorites.

The movies and special episodes each introduced new tracks, with many released as singles or albums.

  • 2013 Anime Buzzword Award Bronze Prize: "I only swim free."
  • Animage 36th Anime Grand Prix: Best Subtitle—12th episode of Season 1.
  • Animage 37th Anime Grand Prix: Grand Prize, and Makoto Tachibana won Best Male Character.
  • "Dried Up Youthful Fame" awarded Best Anime Song.

Free! sparked a worldwide surge in interest in swimming anime.

It shattered gender stereotypes, attracting both male and female audiences with its blend of sports action, nuanced emotion, and stylish male characters.

The show consistently topped Blu-ray, DVD, and music charts in Japan.

Its influence can be seen in many later sports and "bromance" anime.

Free! is deeply intertwined with real-world locations in Tottori, inspiring fans to visit the series’ modeled scenery.

Merchandise ranges from figures and apparel to themed snacks sold in collaboration with Japanese convenience stores.

The franchise notably helped redefine Kyoto Animation’s brand and demonstrated the worldwide demand for sports anime that celebrates both emotional depth and visual spectacle.
