## Overview
Kyojuro Rengoku is one of the nine Hashira, the top-ranking swordsmen who support the Demon Slayer Corps in its fight against demons.
He holds the title of Flame Hashira and uses Flame Breathing, one of the five fundamental breathing styles.
He comes from the prestigious Rengoku family, a clan that has produced Flame Hashira for generations.
Despite a difficult family situation, he rises to the rank of Hashira mostly through self-taught training from a mere three-volume Flame Breathing instruction manual.
He is a main character in the Mugen Train Arc, where he leads the mission aboard the mysterious train, protects over 200 passengers, and ultimately faces Akaza, Upper Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki.
His death becomes a turning point for Tanjiro Kamado and his friends, shaping their resolve and growth.
## Personality
### A Man Burning Like Flame
Kyojuro is defined by his unshakable sense of justice, duty, and optimism.
He is cheerful, energetic, and has a big-brotherly demeanor, easily talking to anyone regardless of age or gender.
He is straightforward, honest, and utterly committed to protecting the weak.
His sense of responsibility as both a Hashira and an eldest son drives his actions.
He tends to arrive at conclusions quickly and then state them openly, sometimes ignoring nuance or other people’s pacing.
This gives him a slightly eccentric air and can make others wonder if he is really listening, but his intentions are always sincere.
He rarely harbors grudges; even if he clashes with someone in opinion, he can immediately return to his usual warm, smiling self.
He highly values courage and determination in others, as seen when he praises Tanjiro’s spirit despite their initial conflict over Nezuko Kamado.
He has a strong, healthy mentality that does not easily warp under hardship.
Unlike many other characters, his ideal dream shown by Enmu is not an escape from reality but a vision of successfully protecting people combined with memories of his family.
He is extremely empathetic and sensitive to emotional subtleties, which, combined with his open character, makes him widely liked.
Among the Hashira, his “rapport score” is described as an outstanding 95%, the highest, indicating that nearly all other Hashira are comfortable with him.
### Catchphrases and Quirks
Kyojuro is very expressive in his reactions to food and events.
He loudly praises tasty food with “Delicious!” and, when particularly pleased, shouts “Wasshoi!” as a celebratory exclamation.
He is known for eating a massive amount of food; on the Mugen Train he eats eleven beef hot pot bento boxes in one sitting.
Because of this appetite and his food-centric reactions, some fans jokingly call him “the Food Hashira.”
He wakes up efficiently and on time, ranking first in a “best at waking up” internal ranking.
His favorite motto is a combination of Chinese-style maxims: “Fall and only then cease” and “With complete mental focus, nothing is impossible,” summarizing his belief in perseverance and willpower.
## Appearance
Kyojuro Rengoku has bright flame-colored hair that looks like fire. His eyes are sharp and full of energy. He wears a white cape with red and yellow flame patterns at the bottom and flame-designed leg guards over his standard uniform. His Nichirin sword has a red blade, flame-shaped guard, and special engravings passed down in his family, all showing his connection to fire.
## Personality
Kyojuro is cheerful, lively, and always full of energy. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and is very determined to do his duty. He looks after younger team members with kindness and gives clear orders when needed. Sometimes, his straightforward way of speaking can lead to arguments, but he truly cares about others. He always acts with passion and stays true to his beliefs, no matter how hard things get.
## Background
Kyojuro was born into the Rengoku family, a family famous for passing down the Flame Breathing technique. He trained hard as a child under his strict father. After his mother died and his father lost his motivation, Kyojuro often had to train alone, using only the family’s guidebook. He is the oldest son and feels responsible for supporting his family and his younger brother, Senjuro Rengoku.
Kyojuro has striking, flame-colored hair that appears to blaze outward and fierce, intense eyes that echo the colors of fire.
His hair’s distinct pattern is later revealed to be related to a tradition passed down in the Rengoku family.
He wears the standard black Demon Slayer uniform, with a unique white haori over it whose hem is patterned like flickering flames.
The haori does not fall off even when he moves violently, and it is later revealed to be an heirloom worn only by the Flame Hashira of the Rengoku family.
He also wears leg wraps with flame motifs to complete the “living flame” impression.
His overall look emphasizes vigor, strength, and a strong, unwavering presence.
## Backstory
Kyojuro is the eldest son of the Rengoku family, a lineage known for producing Flame Breathing swordsmen and Flame Hashira.
His father, Shinjuro Rengoku, was a former Flame Hashira, and his mother, Ruka Rengoku, was a gentle yet strong woman whose words deeply shaped Kyojuro’s life.
As a child, Kyojuro received intense, passionate training from Shinjuro and grew up with the expectation of becoming a great demon slayer.
However, when Ruka died from illness, Shinjuro lost his drive, fell into alcoholism, and abandoned both his training duties and his parental role.
From that point on, Kyojuro essentially trained himself.
With only three volumes of Flame Breathing instructions left in the house, he studied them thoroughly and honed his skills mostly on his own until he eventually rose to the position of Flame Hashira.
He deeply loves his younger brother, Senjuro Rengoku, and, despite carrying his own pain, always encourages him with a smile.
He takes over household responsibilities and attends Hashira meetings in his father’s place, effectively managing the Rengoku family while still very young.
Although hurt by his father’s coldness and harsh words, Kyojuro does not sink into bitterness.
He chooses instead to live up to his mother’s teachings: that those born with strength must use it to help and protect others.
## Abilities
Kyojuro has a natural talent for sword fighting, which he improved with constant training. He uses Flame Breathing techniques and is very fast and strong. He can move across five train cars in a flash and has moves to soften blows. He has a sharp eye for battle tactics and leads other demon slayers in fights. Kyojuro carries a special uniform, his red-bladed sword, and a loyal Kasugai Crow named Kaname, which helps him in battles.
## Relationships
Kyojuro treats younger Demon Slayers like Tanjiro Kamado, Inosuke Hashibira, and Zenitsu Agatsuma as a friendly older brother. He is strict but caring, teaching them important lessons. He is well respected by other Hashira and team members. His bond with his family, especially his younger brother Senjuro, is very important to him and guides many of his decisions. His trusted crow, Kaname, also plays a key part in his leadership and fighting style.
## Trivia
Kyojuro loves eating grilled sea bream, sweet potatoes, and beef bento. He has a big appetite and is known for finishing large meals at train stations. When surprised, he says, “Unbelievable!” When eating tasty food, he exclaims, “Delicious!” and sometimes shouts “Wasshoi!” when especially happy. One of his favorite sayings is, “Fall and do not rise—But if your mind is set, anything is possible!” He is always enthusiastic about everything he does.

## Plot
### The Incident and Investigation
One night, Kyojuro Rengoku hears about an incident where over 40 train passengers go missing. As the main leader of the Demon Slayer Corps there, he rushes to the train station for answers. He buys lots of beef bento boxes and gets information from Tomi and Fuku. He also talks to train engineers and the conductor about the Mugen Train’s current location and when it will move again.
### Teamwork and Battle with Enmu
While he is looking around the station, Kyojuro and his team save victims from a string of slashings. He gathers his team quickly and, once on the train, joins up with the Enmu’s minions and the main group—Tanjiro Kamado, Inosuke Hashibira, and Zenitsu Agatsuma. Kyojuro tells them, “No matter what shape a demon takes, they always have a neck,” giving confident and clear instructions.
Inside the train, Enmu casts a sleep spell to weaken the Demon Slayers. Even though many slayers are in danger, Kyojuro springs back into action with his powerful second sword strike to help the group.
### Showdown with Akaza
Soon after, he faces Upper Rank Three demon Akaza in a one-on-one fight. They are evenly matched at first, but Akaza shows his true strength. Kyojuro gets a deadly punch in the stomach. Even though he is badly hurt and near death, he refuses Akaza’s offer to become a demon. With his last burst of energy, he tries to cut Akaza’s neck.
### Last Words and Farewell
In his final moments, Kyojuro remembers his family, speaks with pride about his beliefs, and smiles peacefully as sunlight streams through the train, showing he is satisfied with his actions.
## Others
Kyojuro appears in works outside the main story, such as "Kyojuro Rengoku Side Story," and is part of many game collaborations. In each, he sometimes has unique powers or settings. His Japanese voice actor Satoshi Hino admires Kyojuro’s strong and pure character, saying that playing him gives energy and hope. The movie "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Arc," which features Kyojuro’s story, broke box office records in Japan and touched the hearts of many fans, showing just how beloved he is.
Kyojuro’s combat ability is extremely high even among the Hashira.
His swordsmanship combines natural talent with relentless training and extensive front-line experience.
As a Hashira, he is trusted by the highest ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps and respected by his peers.
He single-handedly defeated the former Lower Rank Two when he was still at the Corps rank of “Ko,” a step below Hashira.
On the Mugen Train, he can move across five train cars in an instant, striking with such force that the train itself briefly lifts from the tracks.
He also uses his techniques to soften the impact of the train’s eventual derailment, preventing what should have been a mass-casualty disaster.
Akaza, Upper Rank Three, praises Kyojuro as a rare talent who is close to the “highest realm” of martial arts.
It is implied that Kyojuro may have partially perceived the “Transparent World,” as he accurately reads the internal injuries in Tanjiro’s body when teaching him how to use breathing for emergency first aid.
Even more, in the anime it is stated that at age 20 he has not yet reached his physical prime.
Akaza speculates that in one or two years his techniques would have become even sharper and more refined, indicating enormous growth potential.
In Hashira arm-wrestling rankings, Kyojuro places third, showing his impressive upper-body strength.
He is also fifth in speed rankings, demonstrating excellent leg power consistent with Flame Breathing’s explosive footwork.
Beyond raw combat, Kyojuro has outstanding tactical awareness and leadership.
He rapidly assesses situations, evaluates the abilities of other fighters, and assigns roles that maximize their strengths, as seen when he commands Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Inosuke Hashibira, and Nezuko Kamado aboard the Mugen Train.
## Flame Breathing
Flame Breathing is one of the five basic breathing styles in the Demon Slayer world.
It focuses on powerful, aggressive slashes, often delivered from a grounded stance with explosive forward motion.
Flame Breathing contrasts with Water Breathing, which uses flexible, fluid movement and defensive-reactive techniques.
Practitioners of Flame Breathing are explicitly instructed never to refer to it as “Fire Breathing,” emphasizing a strict terminological distinction.
An ex-demon once described being cut by Kyojuro’s Flame Breathing as “refreshing, like a summer blue sky,” highlighting the clear, pure feeling conveyed by his swordsmanship.
Kyojuro’s mastery is impressive given that he largely refined it alone from a mere three-volume guide.
## Equipment
### Nichirin Sword
Kyojuro wields a Nichirin sword, also known as a color-changing katana, with a bright red blade.
The sword’s guard is shaped like stylized flames, and the hilt is wrapped in white, while the scabbard has a white and gray herringbone pattern.
The blade is engraved with the four characters meaning “Destroy demons” (often rendered as “Extinguish evil demons”).
The hamon (the temper line) on the blade is shaped like rising flames.
An official 1:1 replica released in 2021 measures 950 mm in total length, giving a good indication of the size of Kyojuro’s sword.
### Demon Slayer Uniform and Haori
His uniform is the standard black Demon Slayer outfit with the character for “Destroy” on the back.
It is made of special fabric that is breathable yet difficult to wet, burn, or tear, and minor demons cannot tear it with claws or teeth.
Over this he wears his white flame-patterned haori.
This haori is a Rengoku family heirloom, granted only to the Flame Hashira of the clan, and symbolizes both tradition and responsibility.
He also wears flame-motif leg guards that emphasize his thematic connection to fire.
### Kasugai Crow
Kyojuro’s Kasugai Crow is a male crow named Kaname.
The crow respects him deeply and addresses him with honor, reflecting both Kyojuro’s status and his family’s long service in the Corps.
Kaname first appears in the manga on a chapter cover and later guides Tanjiro to the Rengoku residence at Kyojuro’s request.
In the Mugen Train film, Kaname is given a tearful scene where he departs the battlefield to carry news of Kyojuro’s death.
## Role in the Mugen Train Arc
### Pre-Mission Investigation (Anime-Original Prologue)
After a series of disappearances on the Mugen Train and the loss of several Demon Slayers sent to investigate, the Corps orders Kyojuro to lead the response.
At the same time, Muzan Kibutsuji tasks Enmu, Lower Rank One, with killing both the Hashira and Tanjiro Kamado, who previously survived Lower Rank Five Rui.
The train is temporarily taken out of service and moved to a depot.
In the city near the station, a separate “slasher” incident is terrorizing the area, further disrupting daily life.
Kyojuro establishes or oversees a nearby Demon Slayer outpost to coordinate responses to the train and the slasher.
With fellow demon slayers and his crow, he begins tracking demonic activity and questioning locals.
He meets a bento vendor girl named Fuku and her grandmother Tomi at the station, bluntly asking if they have seen any demons.
His direct question alarms his companions and even his crow, but shows his straightforward nature.
He buys a large number of beef hot pot bentos, some as gifts for other demon slayers and many for himself.
Using the pretense of delivering these boxes, he obtains information from railway staff about the Mugen Train’s status and the upcoming resumption of service.
That night, a demon known as the “sound-speed demon” attacks a trainee mechanic.
Kyojuro rescues the boy but cannot immediately give chase due to the boy’s injuries, so he calls in nearby slayers to pursue while he tends to the wounded.
After stabilizing the boy, Kyojuro uses Total Concentration Breathing to sprint at high speed and catches up to the demon as it goes after Fuku and Tomi.
He kills the demon, and Tomi recognizes his resemblance to the Flame Hashira who saved her and her child 20 years prior—revealed to have been Shinjuro Rengoku.
Kyojuro realizes that his father once bravely protected these people, and he promises to tell Shinjuro about their gratitude.
He concludes that the slasher was a distraction and that the main threat—the demon tied to the Mugen Train—is still at large, so he resolves to board the train the following night.
### Boarding the Train
On the day of departure, Kyojuro returns to the station, where Fuku and Tomi thank him again and sell him another stack of bentos.
He promises them once more that he will convey their thanks to his father, a promise that sadly never comes to pass.
He boards the Mugen Train, unknowingly sharing the train with Enmu and his human collaborators.
Soon after, Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Inosuke Hashibira, and Nezuko Kamado also board under orders to assist the Flame Hashira.
Inside the train, Kyojuro loudly enjoys his bentos, exclaiming “Delicious!” in a voice that echoes through the car.
Tanjiro and his friends locate him by following this thunderous enthusiasm.
Tanjiro asks him about the “Hinokami Kagura” that his family uses, hoping it is related to Flame Breathing.
Kyojuro bluntly answers that he has never heard of it, leaving Tanjiro crestfallen, though he later remembers that the Rengoku family keeps records that might help and invites Tanjiro to visit after the mission.
Kyojuro explains the mission details: over forty passengers have disappeared on the Mugen Train, and several demon slayers sent to investigate have vanished as well.
Zenitsu panics when he realizes they are already “on the battlefield,” while Kyojuro reminds them to remain vigilant because a demon could appear at any time.
The conductor then punches their tickets, activating Enmu’s sleep-inducing spell.
Kyojuro falls asleep and dreams of the day he reported his promotion to Hashira to Shinjuro, who coldly dismissed him, while Senjuro tried to encourage him.
Even in his dream, Kyojuro refuses to sink into self-pity.
He tells himself that there is no use dwelling on what cannot be changed and chooses to keep encouraging his younger brother.
Enmu’s human agent, a braided girl, infiltrates Kyojuro’s dream to find and destroy his “spiritual core.”
However, Kyojuro’s survival instinct is so strong that his real body moves even while asleep, grabbing her by the throat and preventing the destruction of his soul.
Meanwhile, Nezuko, unaffected by the spell, wakes Tanjiro with her flames and headbutts.
Tanjiro then begins his fight with Enmu while Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko protect passengers in other cars.
### Waking and Commanding the Battle
By the time Kyojuro awakens, Enmu has fused his body with the entire train, turning it into a giant demon.
The demon’s flesh spreads through the cars, attacking passengers simultaneously.
Kyojuro wakes on his own, senses the crisis, and immediately slices through demonic flesh with a blazing technique.
He then apologizes for having “dozed off” while things escalated, calling it shameful for a Hashira.
He takes command of the situation with calm authority.
He quickly assesses the capabilities of the younger slayers and assigns roles:
Kyojuro himself will defend the front half of the train and passengers there.
Zenitsu and Nezuko will defend the rear cars.
Inosuke and Tanjiro will search for and sever Enmu’s true neck, somewhere within the train.
His instructions are simple but perfectly targeted: he trusts each of them, giving them clear objectives without micromanaging their fighting styles.
When Tanjiro hesitates about how to fight a demon that has merged with a train, Kyojuro reminds him that as long as it is a demon, it must have a neck, making the goal simple and concrete.
From Enmu’s perspective, it is as if he has swallowed five tiny warriors who are hacking him apart from the inside.
Kyojuro, Zenitsu, and Nezuko savagely cut through his flesh while Tanjiro and Inosuke seek the demon’s core.
Eventually, Tanjiro and Inosuke locate Enmu’s neck bone within the train and sever it, killing Enmu.
As Enmu dies, the train derails violently, threatening severe casualties.
Kyojuro responds instantly, unleashing powerful Flame Breathing techniques to shield the passengers and reduce the impact.
Despite the scale of the crash, there are no deaths among the passengers or Demon Slayers other than the injuries already sustained.
### Final Battle Against Akaza
Just as the survivors are catching their breath, Akaza, Upper Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki, suddenly appears near the wreckage.
He immediately locks onto Kyojuro’s strong fighting spirit and attacks him.
Akaza is fascinated by Kyojuro’s martial prowess and honorable spirit.
He repeatedly urges Kyojuro to become a demon, arguing that as a demon he could train for centuries, surpass human limits, and fight forever.
Akaza offers what he believes is a compliment and opportunity:
“If you become a demon, you can train for 100 or 200 years.”
“Let us fight forever at the highest level.”
Kyojuro utterly rejects this philosophy.
He declares that mortality is precisely what makes human life beautiful and precious.
He tells Akaza that aging and dying are not weaknesses but the very things that make humans dear and worthy of respect.
He refuses to abandon his humanity, even if doing so would allow him to reach greater strength.
The battle between them is fierce and visually spectacular, with both fighters trading devastating blows.
Kyojuro’s techniques push Akaza to the brink multiple times; without demonic regeneration, Akaza would have been incapacitated by Kyojuro’s strikes.
However, the difference in regeneration becomes decisive.
Kyojuro suffers severe injuries: his left eye is destroyed, his ribs are broken, and his internal organs are badly damaged.
Despite this, he never retreats, continuing to place himself between Akaza and the helpless passengers.
At the climax, he unleashes Flame Breathing Ninth Form: Rengoku, a final, all-out technique.
Akaza counters with his own ultimate attack and drives his fist through Kyojuro’s abdomen, inflicting a mortal wound.
Even so, Kyojuro locks his arms around Akaza, pinning him and attempting to either cut off his head or hold him in place until sunrise.
Tanjiro and Inosuke rush to help, but Akaza, panicking as dawn approaches, tears off his own arms to escape Kyojuro’s grip.
Kyojuro fails to decapitate him by a hair’s breadth, and Akaza flees into th

The Flame Hashira who uses "Breath of Flames." He is 20 years old. His Nichirin Blade has a red blade and a tsuba shaped like flames. He is a major character in the Infinity Train Arc.
He wears a white haori over his uniform, with flame-like patterns at the bottom edge.
He adamantly demands the execution of Tanjirou for violating Corps rules and Nezuko for being a demon, yet he does not show personal hatred towards demons, favoring rational discourse. After the Hashira Meeting, he is somewhat moved by Tanjirou's determination, and later invites him to be his apprentice when they meet again. Eventually, he acknowledges Nezuko, who fought to protect humans, as a member of the Demon Slayer Corps.
He comes from the Rengoku family, a renowned line of Flame Hashira. Trained under his father's guidance since childhood, he honed his demon-hunting skills. However, after his father suddenly abandoned his sword and became apathetic, Rengoku was deeply hurt but continued to support the Demon Slayer Corps with a cheerful demeanor while guiding his younger brother, Senjurou.
Rengoku's combat abilities are exceptional; on the Infinity Train, he can move between five carriages instantly and mitigate the impact of derailment with his techniques. He shows outstanding leadership and judgment, providing precise instructions to Tanjirou and others to manage the situation on the train. He is highly regarded by other Hashira.
During the investigation of the Infinity Train, he collaborates with Tanjirou and the others to defeat Enmu. However, immediately after, he is ambushed by Upper Rank Three, Akaza. Akaza praises Rengoku's exceptional combat skills, swordsmanship, and spirit, repeatedly trying to persuade him to become a demon. Rengoku steadfastly refuses and fights to the end as a human. Despite a more than equal battle, he is gradually cornered by Akaza's regenerative abilities and sustains fatal injuries, ultimately failing to kill Akaza. Nonetheless, he fought valiantly against an Upper Rank demon who had killed numerous Hashira, protecting everyone else from harm. With his last words, he leaves a message for Tanjirou and dies with a smile, holding his love for his family. He became the first Hashira of his generation to die in battle, but his fighting spirit and conviction deeply influenced Tanjirou and others, earning continued respect even after his death.
In the spin-off "Rengoku Kyoujurou Gaiden," he is portrayed as the protagonist.
