L-ELF is one of the main characters of *Valvrave the Liberator*. He is a 17-year-old elite agent from the Dorssian military's Karlstein Institute. Known for his intelligence and amazing combat abilities, L-ELF has a sharp mind and little emotion. He is famous for breaking down situations and being called a "One-Man Army" by his enemies. L-ELF holds deep feelings for Princess Lieselotte W. Dorssia and is driven by the desire to change Dorssia through revolution. His history includes a harsh childhood as an orphan, betrayal, and a life marked by cold decisions. Despite his rough side, L-ELF's personal journey involves friendship, loss, and learning what it truly means to care for others.
“L-ELF” is a code name, so he has no last name, but he has once used the full name L-ELF Calurstein as a convenience. His real name is Michael (last name unknown). Due to his keen situational awareness and extremely high combat ability that can annihilate the majority of opponents in an instant, he is feared by ARUS under the nickname "One-Man Brigade." Additionally, his abilities have reached a prophetic level, easily grasping the powers of Magius and discerning the intentions behind the special curriculum of Sakimori Academy. When formulating plans and strategies, he has the habit of stating, “The conclusion that can be drawn is,” after listing the factors that need to be simulated.
## Appearance
Originally an orphan, he was a street child and, ten years before the story begins in the 61st year of the Shinkyoku calendar, became a lower-level member of a terrorist group conducting anti-government movements. The presidential faction that had been using the organization abandoned them, and when L-ELF was captured while attempting to escape, he was saved by Princess Lieselotte just before he was about to be killed. As a result, he has a strong attachment to the photo of Lieselotte he always carries and her name, which he occasionally speaks. Lieselotte is also aware of L-ELF, and when they reunited three years ago, she tried to escape from her confinement with him, but he was dissuaded when she pointed out that there was no safe place for them and they still had no path forward.
- Age: 17
- Birthday: May 25
- Zodiac Sign: Gemini
- Blood Type: A
- Height: 177 cm
While belonging to the Calurstein Institute, he learned that one of his comrades, Efzequs, was an anti-government element within the royalist faction, and according to the institute's merciless principle of "If we overlook a traitor, everyone will be killed", he killed him. This incident became an unforgettable past not only for L-ELF, who hesitated to carry out the murder, but also for A-Drei and the others who could not stop him. Through this experience, L-ELF developed a ruthlessness that, in order to prevent situations he finds absolutely intolerable, he would not hesitate to kill even his comrades.
L-ELF is tall and slim. He has silver hair and blue eyes. He always looks neat and serious, fitting his military background.
During the infiltration of Module 77, he and Q-vier disguised themselves as transfer students to Sakimori Academy, killing the immigration inspectors and bringing along three other unregistered transfer students with them. Initially, he planned to kill Haruto at Module 77 and capture Valvrave I, but after being Jacked by him, he was recognized as a traitor by the Dolcia Army. However, harboring the ambition to revolutionize Dolcia and change the world, he thought he could use Haruto for course correction and urged him to make a "contract." He then continued to lurk in Module 77, prompting Haruto and Saki to head to the Valvrave hangar after discovering it, while also planning the militarization of the newly formed Geoole and commencing the occupation of Module 77 to realize his ambitions. Eventually, after being sought out by Haruto for his abilities, the contract was established, making him the first defector to the newly formed Geoole.
## Personality
Afterward, with the aim of mutual monitoring, he shared a room with Haruto and guided the students in arranging and maintaining Module 77, while secretly assessing their suitability for Valvrave and carefully selecting irreplaceable Magius, steering the situation in his desired direction. However, just before arriving at the moon, they were attacked by the Dolcia Army, and a squad led by Kain broke into Module 77. L-ELF confronted Kain alongside Haruto but was overwhelmed and lost Valvrave II.
L-ELF is calm, logical, and almost never shows strong emotions. He always looks for the best result in any situation. He likes to say, "The conclusion that follows is..." when thinking about solutions. L-ELF does not care much about food, hobbies, or even having fun. He finds it hard to be around girls. His main focus is the mission, and he can act cold—even toward friends—if they become threats.
In the '2nd' arc, after arriving on the moon, he discreetly supports the newly formed Geoole while conducting research on Valvrave and Magius with Takumi through Haruto's human experimentation. As a result, he discovers the fact that Valvrave operates by Haruto attacking others and establishes a contract with him stating, “For the supply of power for Valvrave, when a fit occurs, allow oneself to be attacked.” After descending to Earth, he confided to Haruto about his frustrations of not being able to take direct action in the revolution due to lacking piloting aptitude.
His drive comes from wanting to win and his promise to Princess Lieselotte. Despite his cold front, L-ELF learns about friendship and loyalty through his adventures, especially his connection with Haruto Tokishima.
During the Geoole rescue operation, he was in contact with the Dolcia royal faction and, upon hearing the name "Michael" from Klimhilt during their reunion in the ancient city of Dolciana, he became convinced that Lieselotte was nearby and went to rescue her alone, confessing his love for her. However, after being gravely injured in battle with pursuers and being rescued by Haruto during their escape, he learned that Lieselotte sacrificed herself to protect them, losing even the will to live. After the collapse of the newly formed Geoole, he was about to be sold together with Haruto when Kyuuma rescued them, leading to an emergency landing on the moon. There, he was shocked to learn from Haruto that Lieselotte was a Magius, but upon understanding her feelings, he regained his composure. He later returned to Dolcia disguised as an injured soldier, joined forces with A-Drei and Ikusain, who had learned the truth, to expose the realities of the Magius to the world. Afterward, he joined up with the besieged Valvrave I, allowing Haruto to Jack his body and instructing him to fight Kain. When the battle concluded and he regained consciousness, he confessed to the dying Haruto "He (Haruto) is my friend," shedding tears as he watched over his last moments.
## Background
After the recovery operation for Module 77, he attended the wedding of Satomi and Takahi, smiling and celebrating with them.
L-ELF was taken to an orphan camp as a child. During a transfer, he tried to escape and was almost caught by Dorssian soldiers. Princess Lieselotte W. Dorssia saved his life, making a deep mark on him, and he began to care for her greatly.
In the spin-off work "Undertaker," L-ELF is one of the few who knows the existence of both five Valvraves and two Kagerou. Before arriving on the moon, he learned of the Kagerou's existence when the Dolcia Army's squad attempted an invasion using drill bits and poison gas. He highly appreciated the piloting skills of Jin and Nao, who controlled the Kagerou remotely using the Kagerou's control system "DRI-Ve," and judged that the two Kagerou could defend even if the five Valvraves separated from Module 77, which contributed to the execution of the Earth descent operation. He has also enforced a gag order on Jin and the others to ensure that the existence of the two Kagerou is kept secret from others until the worst-case scenario arises.
He later joined the Karlstein Institute and became L-ELF, which means "11th of L in Karlstein." His birth name is Michael, but his last name remains unknown because it was taken from him.
Ten years before the main story, L-ELF spent time with a terrorist group. He was abandoned by them, got captured, and was rescued by Lieselotte. Three years before the current story, he tried to save Lieselotte again but failed to find a safe place, so he could not rescue her.
One day, he killed his teammate F-sechs, who turned out to be a royalist rebel, following the rules of his organization and learning to be ruthless.
## Abilities
L-ELF is a genius at figuring things out fast. He can take down many enemies with his fighting skills and is even called a "One-Man Army" by ARUS, another military force. He is good with tactics, creating strong plans, and reading what his enemies will do next—almost like he can see the future.
He is also great at understanding the power of Magius, an important force in the story. L-ELF can spot hidden intentions, like seeing through the special curriculum at Sakimori Academy.
