Character Setting

Edit

Mutsu is a skilled and beautiful female warrior from the Yato tribe, known as one of the three great mercenary clans in space. She serves as the vice-commander of the Kaientai and is known for her calm and collected nature. Originally, she wanted to live a normal girl's life but was forced into a tough position due to her family background. After meeting Tatsuma Sakamoto, her life changed, and she started to believe in his ideals. Despite her no-nonsense attitude towards Sakamoto's antics, she respects and trusts him deeply. Mutsu has a strong sense of justice, a sharp tongue, and is respected as a true right hand by her crew. She is secretly a member of the powerful Yato tribe and has an interesting past involving space pirates, family, friendship, and many adventures.

Mutsu has long hair and always keeps a poker face.

She wears a blue work outfit with a purple traveling coat and a woven hat.

A bright red scarf is wrapped around her neck.

She dresses in a style inspired by traditional Japanese gangsters, making her look tough and cool.

She does not carry an umbrella for sunlight like other Yato, showing her unique way of dealing with her weaknesses.

Mutsu is very calm, smart, and serious.

Though she seems cool and collected, she is also very passionate and bold.

She speaks in the Tosa dialect, calling herself "washi" (an old man-like word for "I"), which she picked up from Tatsuma Sakamoto.

She can be sarcastic and has a sharp tongue, earning her the nickname "Razor-Sharp Vice-Commander" from Sakamoto.

Despite her tough attitude, she trusts Sakamoto deeply and is fiercely loyal.

She is respected by everyone in the Kaientai, with many calling her "Lady Mutsu."

She is also not afraid to scold or even physically punish Sakamoto when he acts irresponsibly.

When she was 14, Mutsu was forced by her father to become the vice-commander of the space pirates Chidori.

She was known as the "Diamond Princess" back then.

Her father was the leader of Chidori, and she really wanted to live just like a normal girl.

She met Tatsuma Sakamoto when he was a slave on the Chidori's ship.

Over time, she became interested in Sakamoto and the other slaves who eventually started a rebellion.

Sakamoto bought (or rather, took over) the Chidori and changed her life.

Her family roots lie in the Yato tribe, which means she is part of one of the most powerful warrior clans in space.

Her father climbed to the top as the Chidori's boss using his own schemes, but there is little information about her mother.

She had a close relationship with Umibouzu (Kagura's father) because their fathers were friends, and Umibouzu tried to become her mentor.

Mutsu is very strong and an amazing fighter as a member of the Yato tribe.

She led a group made up mostly of humans, yet outwitted dangerous enemies in major battles.

Her fighting skills are so high that even enemy commanders took notice and guessed that her force must include at least one battle-hardened Yato—her.

She survived dangerous battles and protected her friends, even taking serious injuries to keep Sakamoto safe.

Mutsu is extremely close to Tatsuma Sakamoto, who trusts her fully and calls her his "Razor-Sharp Vice-Commander."

She runs most of the actual work in the Kaientai, as Sakamoto is often absent and laid-back.

She keeps Sakamoto in line, even aggressively when needed, but does it out of care and loyalty.

Many of the Kaientai members respect her, regarding her almost as the real captain above Sakamoto.

She also had close ties with Umibouzu due to their fathers' friendship.

"Our ship is meant for trading. If the captain loses his way, we’re all in trouble."

Early Life and Meeting Sakamoto

At 14, Mutsu worked as the vice-commander of the space pirates Chidori, forced into the role by her father.

She was called the "Diamond Princess" and just wanted a normal girl's life.

One day, Sakamoto and the other slaves on the ship caught her attention.

Mutsu eventually helped with the rebellion that allowed Sakamoto to take over the ship and free the slaves.

This started her new journey with Sakamoto.

Joining Kaientai

After her father's death, she was targeted by Chidori's leader who wanted her place. Sakamoto saved her from danger.

She then joined Sakamoto and worked alongside him, becoming his trusted vice-commander in the Kaientai.

She would later run most of the Kaientai when Sakamoto was missing or fooling around, winning the respect of the entire crew.

Rakuyou Decisive Battle

During the Rakuyou arc, Mutsu gets important intel from Umibouzu and leads a rescue mission for the Kiheitai.

With her leadership, her mostly-human team managed to sneak through heavy enemy lines thanks to her powerful fighting skills.

She also showed her strong connection with Umibouzu and the past information she had about him and the Yato home planet.

Silver Soul Arc

In the Silver Soul arc, Mutsu protects Sakamoto and suffers serious wounds but survives.

After the battles, Sakamoto's business fails, Kaientai goes bankrupt, but Mutsu does not give up.

She starts a new business and answers a request from Katakuriko Matsudaira to go to Earth.

Mutsu's name is based on real historical figures: Munemitsu Mutsu (also known as Yonosuke Mutsu), or the name of Sakamoto Ryoma's last sword, 'Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki.'

She started using the Tosa dialect after being around Sakamoto for so long.

Even with few appearances in the original manga, Mutsu is very popular thanks to her cool personality.

Fans often call her "Mucchan."

She was ranked number one in "Who do you want as your tour guide abroad?" and always makes the top three for "Who would you want as your wife?"

There was a time a fan sent many postcards to the manga creator, hoping for more appearances of the Kaientai.

In the Kaientai, Mutsu does almost all the real work, similar to historical relationships, like how Sakamoto Ryoma depended on Kenkichi Nagaoka for all administrative tasks.

Her popularity vote rankings: 15th in the first poll, 30th in the second, 35th in the third, and back up to 21st in the fourth, showing steady popularity despite rare appearances.

Mutsu appears in nearly every Gintama anime opening and ending alongside Sakamoto.

There are anime-only episodes focused on her and Sakamoto.

In one episode, she predicted Gintoki Sakata would tear up Sakamoto's New Year's card, so she sent her own and lots more from the Kaientai.

She’s known to fan communities by her nickname "Mucchan."

She is both tough and caring, keeping Sakamoto in line while supporting everybody in the Kaientai.

Her true identity as a mighty Yato was a huge surprise even for Gintoki Sakata, who complained, “What about our main heroine’s place now?!”

Even with her tough and sarcastic side, Mutsu cares deeply about her friends and the ideals she believes in.
