Rika Furude is a key figure in the ancient times of the Village of the Ogre’s Abyss, distinguished by her sincere nature, unique sense of humor, and a truly memorable obsession with shrine maiden outfits.
She is known for wearing a modified shrine maiden costume, which was originally designed based on her own preferences.
The distinctive outfit features an open chest area, skirt with a very short hemline, and exposed upper arms—a testament to her eccentric taste.
This unique costume remains as a memento after her passing and is still worn by Hanyuu Furude.
Rika is respected for her earnestness and reliability; the villagers deeply trust her.
However, beneath her upright demeanor lies a passionate, almost comical, shrine maiden outfit fetish.
Once she begins to speak on the topic, she can't be stopped and her enthusiasm turns her into the ultimate costume enthusiast.
She expresses her affection through playful banter, is unfailingly polite, and is endearingly eccentric.
Rika was born in the earliest days of the Village of the Ogre’s Abyss, before it became known as Hinamizawa.
As a baby, she was caught in an attack on the village by “Half-Bloods.”
During the chaos, she was saved by Hai-Ryun Yeasomul Jedha, a mysterious woman who later adopted her as the heir to Furude Shrine, raising her into adulthood.
After coming of age, Rika was again saved by Jedha—this time from a bear attack—and was given the name Hanyuu by her savior, who later became her wife.
Together, they had one daughter, Ouka Furude.
Rika possessed great spiritual power, capable of sealing away demons, which she used to protect her village from supernatural threats.
She displayed tremendous courage and self-sacrifice when she used her last strength to restrain the onslaught of a malevolent “Pureblood” possessing her child self.
Despite these powers, her legacy is as much about her unique fashion sense and the modified shrine maiden robes she left behind as it is about her spiritual might.
Her adoptive parent and later wife is Hai-Ryun Yeasomul Jedha, who saved her twice and gave her the name Hanyuu.
Ouka Furude is her and Jedha’s beloved daughter.
Hanyuu Furude, who survives her, treasures the modified robe as a keepsake from Rika.
Among villagers, she is both respected for her integrity and remembered for her quirky obsessions.
There are hints that her personality and behavior remind Hanyuu of Maebara Keiichi, especially regarding their passionate interests and persuasive speeches.
Rika’s obsession with shrine maiden costumes is legendary—all modifications to Hanyuu’s current outfit stem from Rika’s explosive sense of fashion.
She would launch into extended, almost philosophical speeches about clothing, rivaling even the most committed enthusiasts in the series.
She also shares traits with Irie Kyōsuke, such as her courteous manner of speaking and, for those in the know, a certain resemblance in voice actor.
While famous for her reliability, Rika’s “costume fetishes” are considered notorious and even comical by those who knew her.
"I think the same can be said for us humans. ‘Having horns’—just for that alone, we have created a difficult life for you. Please, don’t blame yourself alone."
"Stay here, as long as you want. Days or years… as long as you wish."
"‘Though my master is gone, let not spring be forgotten.’ ...unlike Michizane’s poem, I feel these cherry trees will bloom even without me."
"Now it's green everywhere in summer, but in autumn, the fields turn gold and the mountains blaze with color. It’s a breathtaking sight! Compared to our previous cherry blossom parties, it's not so flamboyant—but is more graceful, I suppose."
"Hanyuu. I love you. ...I love you, Hanyuu."
"You no longer have to bear pain alone. I will protect you and our child no matter what. ...No matter what it takes or what I have to endure, I’ll stay by your side. So… will you have our child?"
"No matter what others say, you are my beloved Hanyuu. Never forget that. Please take care of Ouka Furude."
Ancient Origins & Adoption
In the distant past of the Village of the Ogre’s Abyss, Rika was saved as an infant from a brutal “Half-Blood” raid by Hai-Ryun Yeasomul Jedha.
Jedha adopted Rika, raising her as her daughter and the successor to Furude Shrine.
Coming of Age & Family
As she grew up, Rika again owed her life to Jedha, who rescued her from a bear attack.
Jedha gave her the name Hanyuu, and the two later married, having a single child together, Ouka Furude.
The Incident with the “Pureblood”
Rika’s life was tragically cut short by a catastrophic incident involving an evil “Pureblood” who possessed her younger self.
Using her last reserves of strength, she sealed away the demon’s wrath, dying alongside the spirit, with Hanyuu and her daughter left to mourn.
Legacy
Despite her death, Rika’s influence endures through both her profound spiritual impact on the village and the remarkably altered shrine maiden robes Hanyuu continues to wear.
Her memory lives on in loved ones, her eccentricities, and the traditions she shaped.
Her unusual legacy is the modified shrine maiden outfit still worn by Hanyuu, originally custom-made to suit Rika's eccentric and passionate tastes.
Hanyuu seems to find kinship or deja vu in Maebara Keiichi, possibly recognizing Rika’s unique traits mirrored in him.
Some parts of the community jokingly refer to the legendary “nightmare” of Rika’s clothing lectures, as they were endless and obsessively detailed.
Her transformation into a legendary figure is punctuated by her ability to blend heartfelt sincerity with a mischievous and unforgettable sense of humor.
Voice actor: Tomokazu Seki (original Japanese).
