Asaemon Ikeda is a mysterious and important character from Gintama. She comes from a famous family of executioners known as the Ikeda family. Asaemon wears a skull mask and is known as the "Death God" behind the scenes. She has a complicated past involving betrayal, sacrifice, and her deep connection with Gintoki Sakata. Asaemon is skilled with a sword and has a unique way of executing people that is said to free their souls. Her story is filled with secrets and dramatic events. She is also known for having a warm heart under her serious appearance, which wins her friends wherever she goes.
Asaemon Ikeda wears a black mini-skirt kimono and a skull mask on her head.
She also wears knee-high socks, showing a bit of her thighs, which creates a "forbidden" feeling, but her skirt is never revealing.
Her character design is inspired by the actress Ayame Gouriki.
Asaemon is usually serious, calm, and follows common sense.
Even though she seems cool, she sometimes shows a funny and cute side, like cutting off Gintoki’s nipple in a joke (she called it “chest-cutting” instead of “beheading”).
She is very kind and cannot ignore people in trouble.
For example, she once saved a child from a badly loaded truck and used to encourage Gintoki when he was a prisoner.
Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura both care about her a lot, and when they found out she was alive, they cried with happiness.
She is shown smiling at the end of her story arc, showing her softer side.
Asaemon is part of the Ikeda family, a line of government executioners.
She was taken in as an adopted child by the 16th head of the family, Yaemon Ikeda, and became the 17th head herself.
Her real father was once a Joi patriot who, out of fear, betrayed his friends to the government and even tried to hand Asaemon over to the Hitotsubashi faction for safety.
Gintoki Sakata executed her real father, and then her adoptive father, Yaemon Ikeda, executed him as well.
Asaemon grew up with the biological child of her adoptive father, who became the 18th head after her.
She admired her adoptive father even more than his real child.
Asaemon continued the belief that executions can purify souls.
Asaemon has incredible sword skills.
She can cut through a car with ease.
Her special move is called “Tsuji-giri” (Street-Cutting).
With this move, the cut is so clean that even the cells almost stick back together, and the soul is taken before the body realizes it was cut.
This is a secret technique in the Ikeda family, also called "Soul Washing."
She has a deep connection with Gintoki Sakata.
She met Gintoki even before he knew Otose.
When she was little, her real father was about to sell her, but Gintoki saved her.
In prison, she promised Gintoki, "When I become a proper executioner, I'll cut your head, so don't die until then."
This promise gave Gintoki hope.
Later, when Asaemon was thought to have died, Gintoki was very upset and blamed Sougo Okita for not stopping her.
This shows how important she is to Gintoki.
Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura also care about Asaemon and cry with happiness when they see her alive again.
Asaemon is friends with many characters and is liked by them for her kindness and fairness.
The Encounter and Her Request
One day, a girl wearing a skull mask appears in front of Gintoki Sakata.
She asks him to help her commit seppuku by acting as her second.
The Night Executioner
Asaemon is revealed to be the 17th head "Night Executioner" of the Ikeda family.
She was supposed to take over as executioner but was called a traitor after she killed the previous head.
She left her family to hide the real truth and take the blame.
Her Father’s Betrayal
Asaemon believed her real father died in the Joi war, but actually, he was alive and betrayed his comrades for safety.
He even tried to hand Asaemon over to the Hitotsubashi faction.
Gintoki caught him, and the previous Night Executioner executed him.
A Promise with Gintoki
Asaemon and Gintoki met when she was a child, and he made her promise to only cut his head once she became a great executioner.
This promise kept Gintoki going when he was in prison.
The Truth Comes Out
It turned out the previous head had helped many death-row prisoners, including Gintoki, escape.
When this was found out, Asaemon was supposed to execute him as punishment.
To protect her family, Asaemon pretended to betray them and disappeared.
The new head (the real son of the previous one) secretly killed more escaped prisoners and put all the blame on Asaemon.
Returning to Edo
Gintoki and his friends bring Asaemon back, and they fake her death so she can escape being hunted.
However, the Night Executioner tries to turn her over to Tokugawa Kihi’s side instead of helping her.
Asaemon realizes they do not share the same beliefs and feels sorry for killing the previous head.
Facing the Night Executioner
Asaemon fights the Night Executioner again alongside Gintoki.
After defeating him, she takes the family name and becomes the 19th "Night Executioner."
Officially, it is said she died by seppuku.
Life After the Truth
Even though she was thought dead, Asaemon continues to value her friends.
She has not been seen again in the main battle until two years later, where a silhouette believed to be her appears during the fight for Kabuki District.
"Someday, when I become a great executioner, I'll cut off your head, big brother. So promise me. Never die until then."
"There are no more criminals here who need to be judged."
Asaemon’s name is based on Yamada Asaemon, a real-life sword tester from the Edo period.
Her look is inspired by the actress Ayame Gouriki.
In the anime, her voice actress also plays a heroine in another show about death gods.
