Character Setting

Edit

Chiya Ujimatsu is a main character from the manga and anime series Is the Order a Rabbit?, serving as the poster girl of the Japanese-style café Amamiusa and a classmate of Cocoa Hoto in high school.

She is known for her graceful, traditional beauty, eccentric naming sense for sweets, and a mix of nurturing kindness and chaotic prankster energy.

Full name: Chiya Ujimatsu

Gender: Female

Birthday: September 19 (Virgo)

Age: Same age and school year as Cocoa Hoto

Blood type: O

Height: 157 cm (first year of high school) → 158 cm (third year of high school)

Occupation: High school student, poster girl at Amamiusa (traditional sweets café)

School life: Same class as Cocoa Hoto in first and second year; different class in third year

Future goal: After graduation, work at Amamiusa while attending a university in the wood-framed town

Voice actress: Satomi Sato

Chiya is the poster girl of Amamiusa, a traditional Japanese-style sweets café.

Unlike Rabbit House, she usually works without part-timer peers, surrounded instead by older staff including her grandmother.

Her surname “Ujimatsu” is derived from “Uji matcha” (green tea from Uji).

The exact surname does not exist in reality, though similar surnames originating from Uji in Kyoto and other regions do.

She is childhood friends with Syaro Kirima, and the two share a long, complicated, and very affectionate history.

Chiya meets Cocoa Hoto when they become high school classmates, and they quickly become close friends.

Chiya is a tall (second only to Rize Tedeza among the main high school girls) and graceful beauty with a traditional Japanese vibe.

She has long black hair styled in a hime cut, which enhances her “Yamato Nadeshiko” (classic Japanese lady) impression.

Her build is described as slim but curvy, with a surprisingly voluptuous figure hidden under her work attire.

She tends to “slim down visually” in clothes, and her weight is light enough to surprise Rize.

While working at Amamiusa, she wears a kimono-style uniform paired with boots to match the town’s aesthetic.

In her private life, she also wears Western-style casual clothes without any issue.

When she borrows the Fleur de Lapin bunny-themed uniform from Syaro, the tightness around her chest is so extreme that the buttons pop.

Despite this, clothes that fit Syaro generally fit Chiya as well, as long as the chest area is not a limiting factor.

Chiya is fundamentally gentle, elegant, and nurturing, very much a modern “Yamato Nadeshiko” type.

She is good at looking after others and often takes on a big-sister role, especially with Syaro and Cocoa.

However, her sense of humor and general perception are quite offbeat compared to normal people.

She is extremely fond of playing the fool, intentionally setting up bizarre jokes and waiting for someone to react.

She loves scary stories, occult themes, and horror movies, but does not wholeheartedly believe in the supernatural.

For example, she hears about the coffee divination “Café du Mansie” and misinterprets it as something like necromancy.

Chiya gets easily discouraged and can fall into dramatic despair over small misunderstandings.

She also tends to jump to conclusions, which often leads to emotional scenes and comedic meltdowns.

Although she has no malicious intent, her actions often turn her into a natural little devil who avoids danger herself while others around her suffer the consequences.

Her weirdly good luck in dodging flying objects or bad outcomes reinforces this impression.

Chiya’s main hobby is making traditional Japanese sweets.

She derives special joy from giving those sweets extravagant, poetic, sometimes over-the-top names and putting them directly on Amamiusa’s menu.

She also enjoys pranks, horror-themed roleplay, and anything that allows her to surprise people.

In addition, she likes horror movies and has a soft spot for occult-flavored topics, inherited from her grandmother’s knowledge of folk remedies and old beliefs.

Academically, she is strong in humanities and language-related subjects such as Japanese and literature.

She is weak in mathematics, so Cocoa tutors her in math while Chiya teaches Cocoa in language subjects.

She has surprisingly high momentary physical power—for example, she can row a boat at astonishing speed.

However, her stamina is extremely low, and she quickly collapses from heavy exercise or carrying heavy objects for too long.

Her danger-avoidance instinct and luck are unusually strong.

She can deftly avoid incoming objects, even though people near her may end up getting hit instead.

Cocoa Hoto

Chiya meets Cocoa Hoto when they end up in the same class in their first year of high school.

They click immediately and become close friends, with Chiya quickly growing very attached to Cocoa.

Chiya likes Cocoa so much that she once seriously suggested that Cocoa “pack her bags and move in”.

She also misinterprets things easily: during a conversation about class placement, she believes Cocoa will not be lonely even if they are separated, and she ends up crying loudly in front of Syaro.

Chiya and Cocoa are both considered “Cocoa-holics”, deeply obsessed with Cocoa’s presence and energy.

When Cocoa is away visiting her family, Chiya even proposes holding an “Out-of-season Cocoa Festival” to cope.

Cocoa is one of the few people who can perfectly decode Chiya’s bizarre dessert names by intuition alone.

This shared understanding deepens their bond and makes Chiya feel especially close to her.

Syaro Kirima

Chiya and Syaro Kirima are childhood friends who grew up together.

Chiya knows many of Syaro’s secrets and embarrassing stories, which she often uses—playfully—to tease Syaro.

She finds Syaro’s reactions adorable and entertaining, which leads her to push Syaro’s buttons frequently.

This often ends with Syaro getting angry or flustered, but the closeness between them is evident.

Despite the pranks, Chiya deeply cares about Syaro.

For example, when Rize offers to walk Syaro home, Chiya tries to carry Syaro on her back through the rain so that Syaro’s poverty will not be revealed.

Chiya dreams of working together at Amamiusa with Syaro and has actually prepared a uniform specifically for her.

She even writes a letter expressing the wish to “wear the same uniform and work together,” but Syaro misunderstands it as Chiya wanting to work at Fleur de Lapin.

When Syaro brings her own Fleur uniform to share, Chiya puts it on enthusiastically, only for the chest buttons to explode under the strain.

Syaro’s mood worsens, and she ultimately declares she has no intention of working at Amamiusa, causing Chiya to burst into genuine tears.

Even so, hints show that Syaro also wanted to work with Chiya, but their crossed signals keep delaying that dream.

Chiya, meanwhile, often imagines them as a manzai comedy duo, encouraging Syaro to carry a personal slapstick fan (“my own harisen”) for comedic effect.

Other Characters

Chiya is friendly and caring toward Chino Kafu and Rize Tedeza, although they are frequently bewildered by her naming sense and sudden thematic shifts.

She is easily influenced by others, especially Cocoa and Rize, and will abruptly declare theme phases like “○○ month”, changing the shop decorations or uniform style to match.

She gets along well with Megumi Natsu, often drawing Meg into her jokes and pranks.

Meg’s straightforwardness sometimes leads her to be one of the few people who call out Chiya’s more dangerous antics—like when Chiya picks obviously poisonous mushrooms while waiting for someone to object.

Chiya also crosses paths with Midori Aoyama, who may help with naming some menu items at Amamiusa.

Rize even refers to Midori as a “co-conspirator” in making over-the-top names.

Chiya works part-time at Amamiusa, a traditional Japanese sweets café.

She is its poster girl, serving customers in a kimono-style uniform and providing a soothing, traditional atmosphere—until her eccentric naming sense and pranks kick in.

Because Amamiusa lacks peers her own age among the staff (most are older, including her grandmother), Chiya longs for friends to work alongside her.

This fuels her desire to recruit Syaro and partly explains her fascination with Rabbit House, where friends work together.

She sometimes plays “Rabbit House pretend” alone at Amamiusa, mimicking the lively café atmosphere she admires.

Internally, she wants to invite Syaro to work there, but misunderstandings keep getting in the way.

Her dream after graduation is to continue working at Amamiusa while commuting to a local university in the wood-framed town.

This reflects her commitment to both the shop’s tradition and her own future.

One of Chiya’s signature traits is her extraordinary naming sense.

She gives her homemade sweets long, dramatic titles that sound more like fantasy spells or poetry than menu items.

These names appear directly on Amamiusa’s menu without explanation.

As a result, people like Chino and Rize are completely confused, while Cocoa can interpret them with ease.

Amamiusa even provides “guides for first-time customers”—a normal menu explaining what the elaborate names actually mean.

Some names are also thought to be co-created with Midori Aoyama, whom Rize jokingly calls a “co-conspirator.”

Chiya’s named sweets and dishes include (with approximate interpretations):

“Sea-Reflected Moon and Stars” – a white dumpling and chestnut sweet red bean soup.

“Capital of Flowers Triple Gemstones” – anmitsu with cherry-flavored dango.

“Golden Shachihoko Special Cream Anmitsu” – white bean soup with mochi and taiyaki.

“Princess’s Jewel Box” – an assorted sweet dish.

“Frozen Evergreen” – likely a matcha parfait or matcha shaved ice with ice cream.

“Snowfield’s Red Gem” – strawberry daifuku.

“Sparkling Three Jewels” – three-color dango.

“Footsteps of Warriors’ Dreams” – extra-large fruit and white dumpling red bean soup.

“Jade Snow Mountain” – shaved ice (perhaps matcha with white mochi and ice cream).

“Small Wheat-Colored Temptation” – turkey, used as a Christmas limited menu item.

“White Gem That Mimics Poisonous Orbs” – mixed normal and wasabi-filled buns for a Russian roulette game.

“Baron’s Gold Vein” – buttered potatoes.

She also gives seasonal and theme-based names, especially for Halloween:

“Red Moon-Dripping Witches’ Sabbat” – Halloween sweet.

“Mansion in the Dark Forest Where Bats Dance” – Halloween sweet.

“The Bonfire of the Doyles” – Halloween sweet.

“Banquet of Evil Spirits and Rabbits Where Moonlight Cannot Reach” – Halloween sweet.

“Pumpkin-Headed Vampire King” – Halloween pancake.

“Thunder of Autumn Rejoices with Sea Bream” – Halloween sweet.

“Tower of Moon and Ghost Pumpkins” – Halloween matcha parfait.

“Purgatory Dance Party” – Halloween sweet.

“Sister of the Abandoned Church Sings a Creepy Canon” – Halloween sweet.

“Descended Vampire King” – Halloween anmitsu.

In various media and collaborations, more names appear, such as:

“White Dragon Orbs Shining in Chiya’s World” – collaboration menu in a themed café.

“Unfading Twin Moons of the Circle” – dorayaki with chestnuts.

“Pearl Emerging from the Frozen Grassland” – white dumpling matcha shaved ice.

“Jewels of Flowing Water Sunk in Darkness” – tokoroten with brown sugar syrup.

She also loves naming non-Japanese dishes at Rabbit House:

“White Jewel on a Snow-Covered Plate”-like patterns for desserts.

“Holy Mountain Peak, Red and White Temptation” – Christmas limited pancake at Rabbit House.

“Threads of Sunset” – napolitan pasta.

Chiya’s naming style often blends nature, fantasy, and dramatic imagery, and it is one of her most memorable characteristics.

Chiya has a strong love for pranks and comedic setups.

This began when she was a child: she once surprised her mother, who reacted dramatically, and the reaction made Chiya extremely happy.

She likes Russian roulette-style games using food, such as:

Dango with one skewer secretly filled with wasabi.

Glasses of mixed normal tea and bitter green juice.

Ironically, Chiya herself has terrible luck in these games and often ends up picking the worst option.

This recurrent self-inflicted misfortune becomes a running gag.

In a test of courage, Chiya happily dresses up in a white coat resembling a death shroud and acts as a ghost.

Her enthusiasm for scaring people is always high, even when the atmosphere is genuinely creepy.

Chiya is fixated on “doing the perfect comedy bit”.

She sometimes waits patiently for someone to point out obvious problems, such as when she picks obviously poisonous mushrooms and silently holds onto them until Megumi Natsu or Syaro finally protests.

Her dream of forming a manzai duo with Syaro reflects this passion for comedy.

She encourages Syaro to literally carry a personal slapstick fan so she can formally be the designated straight man who hits Chiya when she exaggerates.

Chiya’s physical abilities are imbalanced.

She can display tremendous burst strength, such as rowing a boat with astonishing speed.

However, her endurance is abysmal.

She often collapses after short bursts of intense exertion or when carrying heavy objects for a short time.

Despite this, she has excellent hazard avoidance and remarkably good luck in dodging physical dangers.

Thrown objects and accidents tend to miss her but sometimes strike people nearby.

Her running stamina improves slightly when Rize Tedeza helps her train for the school marathon.

Even with training, she is still not a natural athlete but becomes less likely to immediately drop out.

Her behavior often makes her look like a natural chaos engine: good things happen to her by accident, bad things happen to those around her, and she never intends harm.

Chiya is a high school student in the same grade as Cocoa Hoto.

She is in the same class as Cocoa in the first and second years and placed in a different class in her third year.

At the second-year school festival, she serves as an organizing committee member alongside Cocoa.

Their hard work is recognized, and as a result, Chiya is recommended as a candidate in the student council president election.

Her academic performance is strong in humanities, and she serves as a tutor in language subjects for Cocoa.

In return, Cocoa helps her with mathematics, her weak point.

Chiya’s knowledge of folk remedies and occult practices comes from her grandmother.

She applies these remedies, often experimentally, to Syaro—though she herself is not entirely convinced they are effective.

Her fascination with these old practices and the supernatural leads her to enjoy horror films and ghost stories.

She is not easily terrified by spooky themes; in fact, she embraces them for fun and atmosphere.

This occult interest influences her aesthetic: she names sweets after witches’ sabbats, vampires, haunted mansions, and other dark images.

It also plays into her role during events like test-of-courage episodes, where she gleefully plays a ghost.

Chiya appears as a playable character in the mobile game Kirara Fantasia.

She joins the cast along with Syaro in the 2019 event “The Ambition of Amamiusa.”

She has multiple versions:

4-star Priest (fire attribute) – event distribution character.

5-star Priest (wind attribute) – gacha character.

5-star Mage (fire attribute, Christmas version) – limited Christmas event “Kuromon and the Great Christmas Tree” in 2020.

As a Priest, her skills focus on team support and recovery:

4-star Priest skills: all include healing plus additional buffs, such as medium party heal + magic defense up, or raising an ally’s chance of being targeted.

5-star Priest skills: party-wide healing plus party-wide buffs, with the ability to place healing skill cards that also help fill the “special move” gauge, as well as skills that increase an ally’s defense and chance of being targeted.

Her exclusive weapon for the 5-star Priest form has:

Pre-evolution: buffs one ally’s attack, magic attack, and luck (medium) for several turns.

Final evolution: buffs all allies’ attack, magic attack, and luck (large) for several turns, significantly boosting overall team damage and critical chance.

Her auto skill as a 5-star Priest grants immunity to status ailments and stun.

Combined with her ability to increase an ally’s or her own chance of being targeted, she can act as a pseudo-knight, drawing attacks while supporting the team.

As a 5-star Mage (Christmas Chiya):

Her special and skills deal large fire-element damage to all enemies, and she can raise the party’s magic attack.

Her weapon skill deals fire damage to all enemies and increases her own luck, allowing her to self-stack high critical rates.

Her auto skill turns her basic attacks into area attacks, boosting her magic attack each time she defeats an enemy.

These mechanics echo her personality in the main series:

if she uses her “target rate up” on others, it reflects her knack for letting others take the hit; if she uses it on herself, it mirrors her tendency to draw misfortune onto herself in Russian roulette pranks.

Chiya’s versions all share elemental alignment with Cocoa in the game.

This makes them strategically compatible and thematically underscores their close relationship.

In the second part of Kirara Fantasia’s main story, in chapter 5 “Is the Order a Guerilla?”, Chiya appears as part of a group summoned by the entity Hypris.

Chino, Rize, and Syaro are all present, but Cocoa is initially missing.

Chiya and the others join the effort to search for Cocoa, who is captured by the realist faction.

A power called the Sunstone cuts the “paths” to Cocoa, causing Chiya and the others to forget Cocoa’s existence temporarily.

Chiya waits in the underground Amamiusa, which is then attacked by monsters called Utsukai.

She is rescued by Kirara, who has come to borrow Chiya’s power.

Afterward, Chiya joins forces with Kirara, Chino, Rize, and Syaro to rescue Cocoa.

Once Cocoa is saved, Kirara reconnects their “paths,” restoring Chiya’s memories, and Chiya returns to her original world with her bond to Cocoa intact.

Among the main cast of Is the Order a Rabbit?, most characters’ given names are usually written in katakana in Japanese media presentations.

However, Chiya’s name is consistently written in kanji, highlighting her strong traditional, Japanese image.

Other characters whose names are also primarily shown in kanji include Midori Aoyama, Rin Mate, and Chiya’s mother Chidori.

In magazine character profile columns, Chiya and Tippy are unique in that they are often introduced by their full names, while others use only their given names.

This special treatment, combined with her kimono aesthetic and Japanese sweets background, reinforces Chiya’s role as the quintessential “Japanese-style” heroine within the series.
