Voice Actor: Mamoru Miyano

Shinmon Benimaru is the Captain of Special Fire Force Company 7, based in the Asakusa district.

He combines the traditional image of an Edo-period firefighter with a rough, streetwise demeanor and a sharp gaze marked by a circle symbol in one iris and a cross in the other.

Although outwardly curt and brusque, he has a deeply emotional, old-fashioned “Edo-type” temperament, placing great value on loyalty, obligation, and human warmth.

Because of this, the people of Asakusa affectionately call him “Ben-chan” or “Young Master,” treating him as their own guardian and leader.

Despite his perpetually stern, deadpan expression, Benimaru becomes unexpectedly cheerful and radiant when drunk, to the point that people call him the “King of Merriment.”

Within the Fire Force world, his overwhelming combat prowess and versatility have earned him the title “the strongest fire soldier.”

Benimaru is hot-tempered, quick to pick fights, and not at all polite, but he is fundamentally kind-hearted and loyal.

He prizes the local community of Asakusa above institutions like the Empire or the Holy Sol Temple, and he always pays back favors and debts.

He is an Originist, a believer in and defender of the pre-cataclysm “Nation of Origin,” and he does not pledge loyalty to the Empire or its Sun God.

Because of this stance, the Holy Sol Church views him with hostility and suspicion, even while acknowledging his usefulness on the battlefield.

Benimaru insists on using the old-world naming order “Shinmon Benimaru” instead of the Empire’s “Benimaru Shinmon.”

This choice, small as it seems, is a pointed declaration of his allegiance to pre-disaster culture and his rejection of imperial norms.

Benimaru is a slim but well-toned young man with a height of 170 cm and a constant air of fatigue or boredom.

He dresses in a style reminiscent of historical Edo firefighters, emphasizing loose, practical clothing rather than rigid uniforms.

His most distinctive visual trait is his eyes: one iris is marked with a circle symbol, and the other with a cross symbol.

These symbols are not just aesthetic; they are visually emphasized when he activates his ignition and flame-control abilities, highlighting which power he is using.

Hybrid Pyrokinetic (“Fusion Fire Soldier”)

Benimaru is a unique “fusion fire soldier,” simultaneously possessing and mastering both second-generation and third-generation pyrokinetic abilities.

There is no clear generational classification for him, and some sources treat his hybrid powers as a separate category altogether.

As a second-generation user, he can exquisitely control and manipulate existing flames in the environment.

As a third-generation user, he can independently ignite and generate flames from his own body at will.

He can also use ignition and flame manipulation simultaneously, seamlessly blending creation and control.

On-screen, his powers are visualized through his eyes: the cross-mark iris glows when using second-generation controlling abilities, the circle-mark iris glows when using third-generation ignition, and both glow when he combines the two.

His control over fire is exceptional in both scale and precision.

He can cause massive explosions or perform pinpoint detonations with equal ease, which is why he is frequently described as “the strongest fire soldier.”

Combat Style and Physical Prowess

Benimaru is not only a top-tier pyrokinetic but also a highly skilled martial artist.

He combines hand-to-hand combat and body movement with his pyrokinetic abilities in a fluid, lethal style.

When he trained Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle, he fought them from morning to evening in continuous sparring without using his powers.

Despite the prolonged combat, he completely dominated both of them and showed virtually no signs of fatigue, demonstrating extreme stamina and physical conditioning.

He practices a specialized fighting art called “Iaitegiri” (Sheathed-Hand Slash), an Asakusa firefighting style that merges sword-drawing concepts with hand strikes and pyrokinetic output.

Mastery of this style, especially its final technique “Sun Wheel,” is a mark of succession for the Asakusa firefighting chief.

Unique Physiology

For reasons even he does not understand, Benimaru has a naturally high resistance to poisons and drugs.

This unusual constitution allows him to endure toxins or chemical agents that would incapacitate normal people.

Benimaru’s combat revolves around his hybrid abilities and his Asakusa firefighting style, often using a traditional fireman’s standard called a “matoi” as both weapon and projectile.

He frequently ignites the matoi and launches it like a guided missile or rocket, steering it in midair for attacks or even as a mobility tool.

Below are his main named techniques:

Iaitegiri Forms (Asakusa Firefighting Style)

First Form: Fire Moon

A horizontal sweeping strike that sends a sharp arc of flame across a wide area.

It can hit multiple opponents at once, making it ideal for crowd control or clearing space.

Second Form: Moonlight

Benimaru crosses his hands and releases an intense burst of light.

This technique is used primarily as a flashbang-like distraction or blinding maneuver, as seen when he uses it against members of the Evangelist’s faction.

Third Form: Dawn

A rising, uppercut-like strike delivered from low to high, accompanied by an upward burst of flame.

It is effective for launching enemies into the air or breaking through defenses from below.

Fourth Form: Red Sun

Benimaru accumulates an immense amount of heat and releases it in a single explosive attack.

The heat and shockwave generated are so great that they can literally gouge out portions of the sea surface.

Fifth Form: Faint Sun

A diagonal, overhead strike similar to a descending sword slash.

In his battle with the character Firepot, this technique was successfully blocked by the opponent’s use of “Dawn.”

Sixth Form: Reversed Scene

This form is named in the story but never actually shown in use.

Its exact mechanics and application remain unknown, adding a layer of mystery to his style.

Seventh Form: Sun Wheel

Benimaru draws a massive, circular arc of flame, resembling a blazing sun in the sky.

The resulting attack delivers catastrophic damage, and mastering this technique is the condition for being recognized as the chief of Asakusa’s firefighters.

Red Moon and Its Variations

Red Moon

A technique taught to Benimaru by Konro Sagamiya, who originally specialized in it.

It works by building up even more heat than “Red Sun” and then releasing it in a single, overwhelming burst.

When unleashed, “Red Moon” generates a gigantic explosion capable of completely erasing opponents caught in its core.

Although not originally a formal Iaitegiri form, Benimaru adopted and evolved it as part of his personal arsenal.

Seventh Form: Sun Wheel Red Moon

This is Benimaru’s ultimate combination technique, developed through his training with Firepot.

By merging the foundational “Sun Wheel” with the devastating output of “Red Moon,” he creates “Sun Wheel Red Moon,” described as the “Sun Wheel of Benimaru that is acknowledged by, and surpasses, the previous generation.”

The attack represents not only his mastery of Asakusa’s style but also his surpassing of his predecessors as the true leader and strongest guardian of the district.

Benimaru’s method of “sending the Infernals to rest” is unconventional and infamous.

Instead of performing a delicate, minimal-damage execution, he tends to destroy everything around the target in spectacular fashion.

When an Infernal appears, Benimaru often takes it out with overwhelming force, annihilating nearby structures and scenery in the process.

Because of this highly destructive style, locals and outsiders alike call him the “King of Destruction of Asakusa.”

Despite the collateral damage, the people of Asakusa generally accept and even support his methods.

They trust his intentions, knowing his priority is the peace of their district and the relief of the tormented souls of the Infernals.

Konro Sagamiya

Konro Sagamiya is the Lieutenant (middle officer) of Company 7 and serves as a senior brother figure to Benimaru.

In the past, they fought side by side and were equals in battle, but due to certain circumstances, Konro has retired from frontline fighting.

Konro used to call Benimaru simply “Ben,” reflecting their closeness and familiarity.

He is also the one who passed down the “Red Moon” technique to Benimaru and remains a key mentor and pillar of support in his life.

Shinra Kusakabe

Shinra Kusakabe is a member of Special Fire Force Company 8.

Initially, a misunderstanding leads Benimaru and Shinra to clash, even coming to blows.

However, once the misunderstanding is cleared and they fight a common enemy, their relationship grows into one of mutual respect.

Benimaru later trains Shinra (and Arthur Boyle) intensely, forming a mentor–student bond, especially in terms of combat development.

Gustav Honda

Gustav Honda is the Captain of Company 2, and his relationship with Benimaru is notoriously bad.

The two men openly despise each other, and whenever they meet face-to-face, they deliberately call one another by the name style that irritates them most.

Benimaru addresses him by his Empire-style name “Gustav Honda,” emphasizing their ideological divide.

In return, Gustav calls him “Benimaru Shinmon,” rubbing against Benimaru’s preference for the old-world “Shinmon Benimaru” style.

Akitaru Oubi and Company 8

Akitaru Oubi, Captain of Company 8, is one of the few imperial officers who meets Benimaru halfway.

He calls Benimaru by his Origin-style name “Shinmon Benimaru,” respecting his cultural stance.

When Company 8 operates in Asakusa, they also adapt their self-introduction and behavior to match the local Originist customs.

This consideration helps build a cooperative, if informal, alliance between Company 7 and Company 8.

Benimaru’s identity is deeply tied to Asakusa, both culturally and emotionally.

He acts as its protector, representative, and sometimes unruly battering ram against external threats.

By clinging to Originist customs—the old naming order, traditional firefighter aesthetics, local rituals—he preserves a living link to the world before the Great Cataclysm.

His leadership is informal but absolute: the locals treat his words as law, not because of official rank, but because he has repeatedly fought and bled for them.

Within this context, mastering the “Sun Wheel” technique and inheriting techniques like “Red Moon” are not just combat milestones.

They symbolize his acceptance of the role of Asakusa’s chief, the one who must surpass previous generations to keep the district safe in a dangerous world.
