Abengane is a nen exorcist and Conjuration-type nen user in Hunter × Hunter, known as the sole survivor of the annihilated Hame group and later recruited to remove the nen ability placed on the Phantom Troupe’s leader.
Abengane is a calm, calculating Black man with a sharp mind and a slightly condescending view of others that he keeps carefully hidden.
He appears in the Greed Island arc as one of the professional players hired by Battera to clear the game.
He joins the Hame group after confirming the details of their profit-sharing, particularly the increase in his cut if rare cards are obtained.
Within the team, he is mainly responsible for collecting spell cards.
He values money and material reward, and his actions consistently show a strong focus on personal gain and self-preservation.
His good memory, quick thinking, and ability to stay cool under pressure make him stand out even among skilled nen users.
When the identity of the bomber group is revealed, Abengane secretly approaches Gon Freecss and his allies before the deal with the bombers is completed.
He shares critical information about Genthru and his nen abilities, helping the protagonists understand the threat they face.
Later, after being marked with Genthru’s deadly Countdown ability, he uses his own nen to exorcise it and avoid death.
However, the exorcised nen manifests as a large nen beast that clings to him afterward, forcing him to hide both himself and the creature.
In the endgame of Greed Island, Abengane appears with other players at the site where Genthru and his team have been defeated and restrained by Gon’s group.
Seizing the opportunity, he casually taps Genthru’s body and declares that he has “captured the bomber,” fulfilling the original condition to finally erase his own Countdown nen beast and securing his survival as the only remaining member of the Hame group.
Abengane is specifically sought after as a nen exorcist, a rare specialist who can remove curses and lingering nen abilities placed on others.
He becomes especially important after Neon Nostrade’s fortune-telling points to him as a key person related to the Phantom Troupe’s leader, Chrollo Lucilfer.
The Phantom Troupe track Abengane among the Greed Island players based on Neon’s prophecy.
After finding him, they negotiate through Hisoka Morow, offering a very large payment to convince Abengane to remove the nen ability sealing Chrollo’s powers.
His service is extremely valuable because nen exorcists are extraordinarily rare, to the point that the Hunter Association publicly knows of only one self-declared exorcist.
Abengane’s method is also safer than many exorcist abilities, as he does not directly shoulder the enemy nen himself.
After his involvement with the Phantom Troupe, his subsequent whereabouts and activities are not revealed in the story.
He essentially disappears from the narrative once his role as potential exorcist for Chrollo is established.
Abengane is highly intelligent, quick-witted, and constantly calculating.
He is always thinking several steps ahead, weighing risk against reward with cold precision.
While he tends to look down on others, he is too pragmatic to show open contempt.
He keeps his true thoughts hidden, presenting a composed and professional exterior.
He shows little emotional attachment to his allies in the Hame group, viewing their massacre by the bomber team primarily through the lens of survival and opportunity.
At the same time, he is not reckless; he prefers to gather information, predict outcomes, and act only when conditions favor him.
His attitude toward money is straightforward: he works for high pay and is willing to risk much if the compensation justifies it.
This is evident both in his participation in Greed Island and in his negotiations with Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe.
Nen Type
Abengane is a Conjuration-type nen user.
His primary ability is the creation of a nen beast that can consume and neutralize other nen abilities placed on people.
According to creator notes, his Conjuration ability is rated at the highest of four evaluation levels, labeled “Extreme.”
It is considered one of the most perfectly constructed nen abilities in the series, and the only Conjuration ability to receive that top rating.
Exorcism Nen Beast (provisional name)
Abengane’s signature ability allows him to conjure a nen beast that “eats” nen abilities attached to others.
This ability functions more like neutralization and isolation than simple cancellation.
To activate it, Abengane performs a ritual in a forest, drawing on the “power of the forest spirits” by combining his own aura with the aura of living creatures in the surroundings.
Through this ritual, he conjures a nen beast whose form and size depend on the nature and strength of the target nen ability.
The stronger and more dangerous the nen ability being removed, the larger and more imposing the resulting nen beast.
Because the beast automatically scales to the strength of the target, there is essentially no situation where a nen is “too strong to exorcise” with his ability.
Once the beast consumes the attached nen from the victim, the victim is freed from its direct effects.
However, the exorcised nen is not destroyed; instead, it is transferred into the nen beast itself.
From that moment on, the beast remains bound to Abengane, following him constantly until one of two conditions is met.
Either the original user of the exorcised nen dies, or the original “true” release condition of that nen ability is fulfilled.
Because of this, Abengane’s power does not erase nen in an absolute sense.
It renders the ability harmless to the original target and stores it inside a separate entity, effectively neutralizing and quarantining it.
This system makes his ability extremely safe and reliable from the perspective of the person being exorcised.
Abengane himself bears only the “burden” of being followed by the nen beast, which is bothersome but not overtly hostile or uncontrollable.
Notably, his ability cannot exorcise nen from a user who is already dead.
If the nen’s caster has died and their ability persists as a post-mortem curse, Abengane’s method cannot remove it.
The series does not fully explain what happens if he exorcises a nen ability that has no defined release condition at all.
Likewise, it is unknown what would occur if someone attempted to destroy the nen beast itself instead of fulfilling the ability’s original condition.
Practical Use and Examples
In Greed Island, Abengane is targeted by Genthru’s deadly Countdown ability, which turns the victim’s body into a bomb.
Realizing that Genthru’s “Release” command is likely an ignition trigger rather than a disarming mechanism, Abengane decides to rely on his own exorcism instead of trusting the bomber.
He performs his forest ritual and conjures a massive nen beast to consume Countdown from his body.
The bomb threat is neutralized, but the newly formed beast then remains attached to Abengane as a constant, looming presence.
To finally get rid of it, the original condition of Countdown must be met or Genthru must be physically touched and “captured” by someone in-game.
At the end of the Greed Island game, after Genthru has been defeated and tied up by Gon and his allies, Abengane touches him and fulfills the condition, causing the Countdown-based nen beast to disappear.
Throughout this sequence, Abengane demonstrates both his analytical skills and his willingness to take calculated risks to ensure his own survival.
His exorcism ability proves to be an exceptionally powerful counter to complex nen traps, making him a top-tier specialist in the Hunter × Hunter world.
Abengane first crosses paths with Gon Freecss and his allies during the Greed Island events.
He gives them crucial intelligence on Genthru’s powers, indirectly contributing to the bomber’s eventual defeat.
Biscuit Krueger also becomes involved around the time Abengane is using up the last of his remaining time under Countdown, as he teaches Gon and Biscuit about Genthru’s ability.
This exchange helps Gon’s team prepare effective strategies against the bomber trio.
The Phantom Troupe later seek him out specifically because of his exorcism skill.
His role is pivotal for Chrollo Lucilfer, who has had his nen sealed by another powerful specialist.
Hisoka Morow negotiates with Abengane on behalf of the Troupe, arranging a huge financial reward in return for attempting to remove the seal binding Chrollo’s nen.
Abengane agrees to help under these lucrative conditions.
Neon Nostrade’s prophecy serves as the clue that leads the Troupe to him in the first place.
Through this chain of connections, Abengane’s skill set becomes directly tied to some of the most influential figures in the Hunter × Hunter universe.
Creator notes describe Abengane’s Conjuration ability as one of the most “complete” nen abilities in the series.
It is rated “Extreme,” the top tier in a four-level internal scale used to assess nen ability design.
Unlike many exorcism-type powers, Abengane does not need to receive the cursed nen onto his own body or risk immediate backlash.
His only real downside is the inconvenience and danger of being followed by the nen beast that stores the exorcised ability.
Because his ability can handle any living user’s nen without exception and without directly harming Abengane, it is considered a “broken” or overwhelmingly effective exorcism in-universe.
This explains why characters such as the Phantom Troupe are willing to go to great lengths and pay enormous sums to secure his cooperation.
His voice is performed by Daisuke Hirakawa in the original Greed Island OVA adaptation, and by Eiji Hanawa in the 2011 television adaptation.
These portrayals emphasize his cool, calculating personality and slightly aloof demeanor.
