Shido looks like an ordinary high school boy and has a pretty average and plain appearance. He often gets overlooked in school, but after certain Spirits start getting attached to him, he attracts attention from both boys and girls.

Shido is gentle, sensitive, pure, and honest. He has a bit of a sharp tongue but can’t leave someone sad or troubled alone. Though he has never dated anyone before, he is selfless and devoted to helping others, even at risk to himself.

He cares deeply for his little sister Kotori Itsuka, and has some overprotective tendencies. He also shows a strong sense of responsibility for the Spirits he is asked to save. Shido is often embarrassed by his own "cringe" past and tries to keep it secret.

Shido lost his birth mother at a young age and was adopted by the Itsuka family. His adoptive parents are often away, so Shido is good at cooking and housework. As a child, he wrote manga stories about himself as a superhero, which he now considers an embarrassing part of his past.

He has a strange power: when he kisses a Spirit who has opened her heart to him, he seals away her spiritual power and can even use some powers himself. Because of this, Ratatoskr basically forces him into the role of negotiating and sealing Spirits.

Shido is not very popular with the girls in his class, and has had no experience with romance before the story begins.

Shido's main ability is to seal the power of Spirits into himself by kissing them. However, he must earn the Spirit's trust first, or it won't work.

He can also use the abilities of Spirits whose power he has sealed, but this puts a heavy strain on his body—like causing extreme pain and tiredness.

If Shido suffers fatal injuries, he can regenerate, thanks to Kotori’s Spirit power sealed inside him (though he temporarily loses this if she regains her power). He also senses the mood or mental state of sealed Spirits through invisible "paths" that connect them.

Over time, Shido becomes more skilled at using the Spirits' powers. Some powers he can use include:

• Tohka Yatogami: Summoning a powerful sword.
• Kotori Itsuka: Auto-regeneration.
• Yoshino Himekawa: Freezing shield.
• Natsumi Kyouno: Transformation abilities.
• Miku Izayoi: Communicate emotions through song.
• Others: Using wind powers, unlocking/sealing things, and more.

Tohka Yatogami

Tohka was the first Spirit he tried to save. Over time, they have become very close and seem to share special feelings for each other.

Origami Tobiichi

Origami is aggressive toward him, and after he helps her with a major problem, she starts showing him real romantic feelings.

Yoshino Himekawa

Shido treats Yoshino gently, almost like a little sister. She wants him to see her as a girl, not a child.

Kurumi Tokisaki

Kurumi is dangerous and frightening, but Shido is determined to save her. They share some secrets and have an unusual connection, bonding over their love of cooking.

Kotori Itsuka

Though not blood-related, Shido and Kotori have a warm and playful sibling relationship. He has no romantic feelings for her.

Kaguya Yamai & Yuzuru Yamai

They sometimes trouble Shido and drag him into their competitions, but both care for him in their own ways.

Miku Izayoi

At first, Miku did not want anything to do with a boy, but after some events she becomes attached to Shido, calling him "darling."

Natsumi Kyouno

Natsumi struggled with self-esteem, but after much effort from Shido, she opened up to him.

Nia Honjo

Nia, who distrusted humans, was helped by Shido and eventually became his friend.

Mukuro Hoshimiya

Mukuro calls Shido her master and can be possessive, but she becomes more relaxed after her trouble is solved.

Shido lives a normal life until he discovers his ability to seal Spirits' powers with a kiss. Ratatoskr, led by his sister Kotori, asks him to "date" Spirits and stop disasters by sealing their powers.

Meeting the Spirits

He first meets Tohka Yatogami, who is seen as dangerous by the world. Shido risks his life to gain her trust and save her. He goes on to meet many more Spirits, each with their own troubles, like Yoshino Himekawa, Kurumi Tokisaki, and others.

Power and Risks

Over time, Shido becomes the target of the DEM organization, which wants to capture or kill him for his unique abilities. He is forced into dangerous situations, often having to use the Spirits’ powers at risk to his own life.

Emotional Battles

Shido’s deep care for Spirits leads many of them to fall in love with him. This sometimes causes problems—as the stronger their feelings, the more dangerous their reactions if anything happens to him. Enemies try to use this against him, causing crises where multiple Spirits are put in danger of losing control.

True Origins

It is revealed that Shido’s mysterious powers are because he is a recreated being—a “second life” of a boy named Shinji Takamiya, created by Mio Takamiya, after he was killed by Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott. Mio wanted to give her beloved someone who could never be harmed or killed.

• In the spin-off "Date A Bullet," Shido is seen as a “legend” in a parallel world.
• Despite being surrounded by girls, Shido always tries to value and understand each Spirit fully, making him a well-liked main character in the series.
