Character Setting

Edit

Fuchi is a supporting character in the series Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, a young executioner of the Yamada Asaemon clan who serves as both mad scientist and battlefield medic, specializing in dissection, anatomy, and drug development while fighting alongside death-row convicts on the island of Shinsenkyo.

Name: Fuchi

Gender: Male

Age: 20

Birthday: May 20

Height: 148 cm

Affiliation: Yamada Asaemon clan

Executioner Role: Official executioner and medical specialist

Qi Attribute: Metal

Voice Actor (Anime): Aoi Ichikawa

Stage Actor (Live Action): Wakui Miyazaki

Image Color: Dandelion yellow

Fuchi is very short and small-framed, which is why he was nicknamed “Puchi” (from “petite,” later rendered as “Fuchi”).

He has yellow, bob-cut hair with long bangs that fall over his eyes, tied at the back into a small topknot-like tuft.

Behind his bangs are large, striking four-white eyes, giving him an eerie and somewhat unsettling gaze.

His diminutive build contrasts sharply with his serious, clinical demeanor and his skill in battle.

He always carries dissection tools at his waist, so his two swords are slung across his shoulders instead of at his hip.

The two blades he favors are shaped for dissection: one has a dramatically upturned tip, and the other resembles a saw, making them ideal for cutting through flesh and bone.

On the surface, Fuchi behaves like a classic mad scientist: he is obsessed with anatomy, organs, and the detailed structure of the human body.

He takes great pride in the Yamada Asaemon not just as executioners but as contributors to medicine through dissection and drug development.

He sincerely believes, “Clarifying the structure of the human body in order to advance medicine is a noble mission; I will not tolerate anyone who mocks it.”

This conviction is not mere rhetoric for him, but a core principle that guides his choices and loyalties.

Because his sensibilities differ from most people, he rarely finds someone within the clan who truly “gets” him, and he has little interest in trivial small talk.

However, he is also secretly needy: he dislikes not being invited at all and gets annoyed if he is excluded from social activities from the start.

Though he often speaks and acts with a cold, clinical detachment that makes him seem psychopathic, he is not actually heartless.

Once he gets deeply involved with someone, even a condemned criminal, he easily starts to care about them and shows a surprisingly warm and human side.

Fuchi’s fascination with life and death led him to turn the Yamada family’s warehouse into his personal research lab.

There he immersed himself in medical texts, pharmaceutical experiments, and endless dissections.

His “experiments” even extended into cooking.

Unsurprisingly, this made him the least popular person in the dojo rotation when it came to preparing meals.

He is particularly skilled at dissecting executed bodies, using them to study anatomy and to refine medicines.

Thanks to this, he becomes a critical asset on the island, acting as both combatant and field doctor.

In combat, Fuchi exploits his small body and light frame to move with high speed and agility.

He wields his two specialized blades with precision, cutting tendon, muscle, and vital points with a surgeon’s accuracy rather than brute strength.

Assignment to Shinsenkyo

Fuchi is assigned as the executioner in charge of the death-row convict Tamiya Gantetsusai.

Together they land on the mysterious island of Shinsenkyo in search of the Elixir of Life.

From the start, Fuchi uses his knowledge of anatomy and pharmacology to treat Gantetsusai’s injuries.

Later, when they meet up with other groups, he also becomes the de facto medic for the rest of the landing party.

Although he cannot sense Tao, the energy that powers many of the beings on the island, he compensates with raw anatomical knowledge and tactical precision.

By coordinating with Tōma in battle, he is able to help overcome the transformed, oni-like forms of Kishō’s attendants Kikka and Tōka.

Relationship with Senta

Fuchi finds a rare kindred spirit in Senta, another studious type who is also driven by curiosity and knowledge.

Although their academic interests differ, they respect each other as fellow scholars.

After Fuchi learns of Senta’s death in battle, he undergoes a quiet but profound emotional shift.

The loss makes him feel that letting lives go to waste on the island is intolerable, and he starts to wish deeply for everyone’s survival.

This change of heart affects his actions: he even releases a captured Taoist who has lost the will to fight.

He also throws himself into treating the wounded among his comrades, valuing their lives more and more.

Cooperation with Gantetsusai and the Others

After reuniting with Sagiri Yamada Asaemon and the others, Fuchi mostly works in tandem with Tamiya Gantetsusai.

The two form an odd but effective duo as they challenge the celestial beings known as the Tensen in their domain, Horai.

On top of combat support, Fuchi continues to serve as the group’s medical backbone.

His knowledge is invaluable in understanding the bizarre transformations and regenerative properties that plague both enemies and allies on the island.

In the second spin-off novel, Memories in the Waves, the first chapter “Contradictory Life” features Fuchi in a more relaxed everyday setting.

He is shown sharing dango and tea with Senta and Sagiri, offering a rare glimpse of his social side away from the battlefield.

The chapter also depicts a local murder case in their neighborhood.

Fuchi applies his anatomical and forensic knowledge to help identify the culprit, effectively acting as a medical detective.

According to the original author, Fuchi’s portrayal in this story closely matches how the character was envisioned from the start.

Because of that, the chapter is considered essential reading for fans who want to understand his personality in depth.

At the beginning, Fuchi’s emotional responses appear muted, and he often behaves as if human bodies are simply research material.

He seems almost indifferent to whether those around him live or die, as long as he can gain knowledge.

However, repeated encounters with death—especially the deaths of allies and the humanity he sees even in condemned criminals—force him to confront his own feelings.

He gradually shifts from pure curiosity toward a genuine desire to see everyone return alive, or at least not die meaninglessly.

This inner conflict pushes him to examine the nature of “attachment” and “emotion” within himself.

Instead of rejecting these contradictions, he ultimately chooses to accept human confusion, weakness, and inconsistency as natural and valid.

Fuchi’s journey is closely tied to Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku’s central theme of “the middle path.”

He ends up standing between cold rationality and emotional compassion, neither wholly one nor the other.

After intense battles against the Tensen, the situation on Horai becomes even more chaotic when the shogunate sends an additional landing force.

This reinforcement unit is organized under Shugen Yamada Asaemon, who eventually reaches Horai and encounters Fuchi and Tamiya Gantetsusai.

Shugen is one of the few people who truly understood Fuchi’s interests, much like Senta.

Back in the Yamada warehouse, they had dissected bodies together and studied the human form side by side, forming a quiet bond over their shared research.

However, on Horai, their paths clash over loyalty and justice.

Shugen views Gantetsusai as a criminal who must not be protected or shown favoritism, while Fuchi now refuses to abandon those he has decided to care about.

By shielding Gantetsusai, Fuchi is seen by Shugen as defying the world order upheld by the shogunate.

As a result, Shugen delivers a harsh “purging” slash meant to enforce that order.

Fuchi is gravely wounded and left in a critical state.

Even so, he still has just enough strength to move and to make one final medical choice.

With medical supplies sufficient for only one person, Fuchi decides to use them on the equally wounded Gantetsusai instead of on himself.

He treats Gantetsusai’s injuries as best he can, fully aware that this decision means sacrificing his own life.

After finishing his treatment, Fuchi quietly lets himself die.

His final act is a conscious embrace of human emotion, contradiction, and attachment, choosing compassion over self-preservation.

In the end, Fuchi’s death strongly echoes the series’ exploration of the “middle way” between extremes.

He dies as both scientist and friend, accepting that humans are defined not just by logic, but by messy, conflicting feelings.
