Kokichi Muta is a second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High and a semi–grade 1 sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, better known by his remote puppet alias Ultimate Mechamaru.
Kokichi Muta is the true body and identity behind Ultimate Mechamaru, the humanoid puppet who usually represents him in battle and daily life.
He is a sorcerer born with a powerful Heavenly Restriction that grants him immense cursed energy in exchange for a severely crippled body.
He formally belongs to Kyoto Jujutsu High and works alongside his classmates in the Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event.
Behind the scenes, however, he briefly acts as an informant for Suguru Geto’s faction in order to obtain a healthy body.
Kokichi harbors deep resentment toward his own body and the Heavenly Restriction that caused his disabilities.
He openly states he would gladly give up his cursed energy if it meant he could obtain a normal, healthy body.
Because he cannot appear in public and lives in a hidden underground room, Kokichi struggles to fully bond with others.
Despite this isolation, he is strongly attached to his classmates and dreams of meeting them face-to-face under the sun.
He initially feels jealousy and irritation toward Panda, who is not human yet can freely move under daylight when Kokichi cannot.
After fighting Panda during the Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event, their relationship softens into a more friendly, mutual respect.
Kokichi’s emotional core is surprisingly earnest and gentle; his biggest wish is not power or fame but simple, normal interaction with his friends.
During his final battle, he fights while vividly recalling the faces of his Kyoto classmates, especially Kasumi Miwa, who treated him with kindness.
Because of his Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi is born without his right arm and everything below his knees, and he has no sensation below the waist.
His skin is so fragile that even moonlight can burn it, and his entire body constantly feels as if needles are being driven into his pores.
Before being healed by Mahito, Kokichi’s body is wrapped entirely in bandages, and he lives confined in an underground facility.
After his body is reconstructed, he gains a healthy appearance, wears the Kyoto Jujutsu High uniform, ties up his hair, and bears a noticeable scar on his left cheek.
When piloting his puppet Ultimate Mechamaru, he usually appears to others as a humanoid robot rather than as his real, frail self.
In the anime, his giant armored puppet emits beast-like roars based on Kokichi’s own voice, processed and enhanced for dramatic effect.
Kokichi is taken in and protected by Jujutsu High when he is very young.
Once he reaches high-school age, he naturally enrolls as a student at Kyoto Jujutsu High.
Due to his condition, he spends most of his time underground, remotely operating puppets across Japan.
These puppets allow him to attend classes, participate in events, and communicate with others as Ultimate Mechamaru.
Although he is an official Kyoto student and comrade, his inability to physically be with others creates a subtle emotional distance.
This gap motivates his desperate desire to obtain a normal body and walk among his friends as an equal.
Kokichi’s primary wish is to gain a healthy body, even at the cost of his overwhelming cursed energy and Heavenly Restriction.
He does not want strength for power’s sake; he wants the simple human experience of standing beside his friends.
His most deeply held goal is to meet the Kyoto students in person, under the open sky, without bandages or puppets mediating his presence.
He especially treasures Kasumi Miwa’s kindness and longs to speak to her face-to-face, not just through a puppet.
This emotional drive is summed up in his declaration: “I will meet them! Everyone!”
Even when he sides with the enemy temporarily, this choice stems from that same desperate longing to live normally and connect with others.
Kokichi is a user of puppet-based techniques and a holder of a Heavenly Restriction that dramatically boosts his cursed energy.
His fighting style focuses on remote control, long-range engagement, and strategic use of accumulated power.
Heavenly Restriction
Kokichi’s Heavenly Restriction robs him of a functional body but grants him vast reserves of cursed energy and an enormous technique range.
His innate limitation leaves him without a right arm, without legs below the knees, with no sensation below the waist, and with extremely fragile skin.
In exchange, his cursed technique can reach across all of Japan, and his cursed energy output is immense even by sorcerer standards.
He can control numerous puppets over vast distances simultaneously, using them for spying, combat, and communication.
The pain he suffers is constant, described as needles being driven into every pore of his body at all times.
This lifelong agony and restriction become the “price” that fuels his overwhelming energy, which he later stores to power his ultimate puppet.
Puppet Manipulation
Kokichi’s primary technique allows him to create and remotely operate puppets for battle and everyday interaction.
He most commonly appears as the humanoid robot Ultimate Mechamaru, which he uses as his public persona.
This main puppet is equipped with internal weapons such as swords, guns, and cannons, providing both offensive and defensive capabilities.
Kokichi can also operate multiple puppets simultaneously, swarming enemies in coordinated attacks.
He uses unregistered, ultra-small puppets to spy on Jujutsu High and relay information to Suguru Geto’s group while acting as an internal informant.
These discreet puppets allow him to act without revealing his true body’s location or condition.
Ultimate Mechamaru is the nickname of Kokichi’s primary humanoid puppet used for daily life and battle.
The name comes from a robot in an old anime that Kokichi was shown as a child, which left a strong impression on him.
The puppet has a humanoid robotic appearance and serves as Kokichi’s “face” to the rest of the world.
It can talk, fight, and interact with others, letting Kokichi live vicariously through it despite his confinement.
Ultimate Mechamaru is packed with various internal weapons such as blades, cannons, and defensive mechanisms.
Through it, Kokichi can adapt to many combat situations, from close-quarters melee to long-range bombardment.
Kokichi often deploys several smaller versions alongside the main puppet, overwhelming opponents with numbers and firepower.
These puppets are also used for surveillance and infiltration, especially during his time as a secret informant.
Giant Armored Puppet
Kokichi’s trump card is the enormous armored puppet known as Ultimate Mechamaru Absolute Mode, also called Armored Puppet Ultimate Mechamaru Prototype 0.
This massive robot evokes iconic “human-shaped decisive weapons” from classic mecha anime and is powered by years of stored cursed energy.
By binding his already restricted body further over 17 years, 5 months, and 6 days, Kokichi accumulates a stockpile of cursed energy.
This stored power reaches the level of a special-grade sorcerer and is released through Ultimate Mechamaru Absolute Mode in brief, overwhelming bursts.
Within this giant puppet, Kokichi can perform devastating long-range attacks and high-mobility maneuvers.
He pilots it from a cockpit, turning his lifelong suffering into an enormous, one-shot weapon against his enemies.
Charged Attacks
Kokichi’s ultimate puppet channels his accumulated years of power into named charged techniques.
Each technique consumes a different number of “years” of his saved cursed energy.
Charge 1 Year – Great Purification Cannon (Ultra Cannon)
One year’s worth of cursed energy is concentrated into a beam fired from the puppet’s palm.
This blast has the raw destructive power to obliterate something on the scale of a dam.
Charge 2 Years – Double Great Purification Cannon (Miracle Cannon)
Two years of cursed energy are converted into beams fired from both hands simultaneously.
When aimed at a water surface, the impact throws up a pillar of water taller than the puppet itself.
Charge 5 Years – Homing Bullets: Quintet (Viola)
Five years of cursed energy are formed into five massive energy projectiles that track and pursue the target.
These homing blasts relentlessly chase the enemy, creating a deadly storm of guided fire.
These attacks allow Kokichi to momentarily dominate the battlefield, putting even dangerous foes under intense pressure.
He uses them in his desperate fight against Mahito and Suguru Geto’s faction, leveraging every year of pain he stored.
Kokichi also uses Simple Domain, a defensive domain technique from the New Shadow Style school.
Simple Domain is a “weak person’s domain,” designed to counter enemy domains by neutralizing their techniques within a limited space.
In general, domains carry the property of overpowering or “rewriting” other cursed techniques inside them.
Even though Simple Domain is considered a lesser version, it still counts as a domain and can slightly dilute the effects of enemy techniques.
Kokichi, however, takes this a step further by deploying Simple Domain inside the opponent’s body.
By creating the domain within Mahito, he significantly amplifies the neutralization effect and disrupts Mahito’s body-altering technique, inflicting real damage.
Ordinarily, New Shadow Style is a secret art passed from master to one successor, and teaching it to outsiders is forbidden by binding vows.
Kokichi is not an official student of this school; he learns the technique by imitating what he saw from Kasumi Miwa.
Because he cannot freely cast it, Kokichi loads the Simple Domain technique into capsule-like cartridges.
In battle, he injects or strikes with these capsules to trigger Simple Domain at critical moments.
Using this method, he wounds Mahito and shields himself from Mahito’s domain expansion, temporarily turning the tide of battle.
This clever adaptation shows his intelligence and resourcefulness, even when facing a sorcerer-killing curse.
Kokichi’s closest connections are with the students of Kyoto Jujutsu High.
Even though he rarely meets them in person, he watches them constantly through puppets and values them deeply.
He feels particular affection for Kasumi Miwa, who interacts warmly with his puppet and treats him kindly despite his situation.
During his final battle, memories of Miwa and the rest of the Kyoto team drive him to keep fighting against impossible odds.
Kokichi initially experiences envy and irritation toward Panda, who, despite being non-human, can go outside and move freely in daylight.
After their clash during the Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event, Kokichi’s attitude softens, and an awkward friendship begins to form.
He also respects Aoi Todo as a powerful comrade, though Todo is notably absent from some of the plans Kokichi arranges for Shibuya.
Kokichi’s concern for his classmates runs so deep that he arranges missions to keep them away from Shibuya on the day of the major incident.
At one point, Kokichi enters into a binding vow with Mahito and the false Suguru Geto (Kenjaku).
In exchange for having his body healed with Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration and a promise that Kyoto students would not be harmed, Kokichi becomes their inside informant.
He uses unregistered miniature puppets to gather intel from within Jujutsu High and send it to the enemy.
This covert activity makes him a traitor in practice, even though his motives are rooted in desperation and longing for a normal life.
However, when the cursed spirit Hanami attacks the Kyoto side during the Sister School Exchange Event, the enemy breaks their promise.
Seeing the vow violated, Kokichi resolves to quit being an informant and prepares to fight back against Mahito and Kenjaku.
On October 19, 2018, Mahito finally fulfills his part of the bargain and reconstructs Kokichi’s body with Idle Transfiguration.
For the first time in his life, Kokichi obtains a healthy, fully functional body and can move freely.
Almost immediately afterward, he turns on Mahito and confronts him and Kenjaku using Ultimate Mechamaru Absolute Mode.
Kokichi unleashes the years of accumulated cursed energy, employing his charged attacks and strategic Simple Domain cartridges.
Thanks to careful planning and enormous power, Kokichi temporarily gains the upper hand against Mahito.
He damages Mahito’s body and even uses an improvised Simple Domain strike inside Mahito to disrupt Idle Transfiguration.
Ultimately, Mahito manages to deploy his domain, Self-Embodiment of Perfection, pulling Kokichi into its interior.
Despite his ingenuity and determination, Kokichi cannot overcome Mahito inside the domain and is killed in the clash.
The anime extends this scene by showing Kokichi activating a life-sized backup Mechamaru within the cockpit as a last resort.
Even as death closes in, he struggles to land a final Simple Domain strike on Mahito, fighting to his very last moment.
Before his death, Kokichi anticipates the possibility that Satoru Gojo might be targeted and sealed.
He prepares three small “Mini Mechamaru” units with preset instructions to activate only if Gojo is sealed.
During the Shibuya Incident, these Mini Mechamaru puppets activate and contact Yuji Itadori and his allies.
Through them, Kokichi posthumously delivers crucial information about the enemy’s plans and Gojo’s sealing.
His message becomes a key trigger that alerts the heroes to the true scope of the crisis unfolding in Shibuya.
Although his cursed energy reserves are limited in these posthumous puppets, he uses them efficiently to provide maximum intelligence.
Kokichi also makes arrangements so that, aside from Aoi Todo, his Kyoto classmates are assigned to missions far away from Tokyo on the day of the Shibuya Incident.
This strategic move keeps most of them out of the main disaster zone, showing his deep care and forward-thinking even from beyond the grave.
Once the Mini Mechamaru puppets exhaust their power, Kokichi’s lingering presence finally disappears completely.
What remains are his plans, his warnings, and the emotional impact he leaves on the Kyoto and Tokyo students.
In the anime adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen, Kokichi is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka.
The roar emitted by the giant Ultimate Mechamaru Prototype 0 is actually Matsuoka’s shout, digitally processed and used as the robot’s voice.
The anime expands some of Kokichi’s final scenes compared to the original manga.
In particular, it shows him activating an additional life-sized Mechamaru unit and making a last attempt to punch Simple Domain directly into Mahito.
In a special illustration for the final episode, Kokichi (as Mechamaru) is shown accidentally holding hands “like lovers” with Kasumi Miwa and reacting in shock.
Given that he dies during the Shibuya Incident and is permanently separated from Miwa, this playful image serves as a bittersweet, heartwarming extra for fans who care about their relationship.
