Character Setting

Edit

Urogi is a demon from the manga and anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, one of the emotion-based clones created from Upper Rank demon Hantengu and the embodiment of “Joy.”

He is notable for his bird-like appearance, high-speed aerial combat, and sadistic, thrill-seeking personality.

Urogi is one of Hantengu’s multiple emotion clones, specifically representing “Joy” in the set of Joy, Anger, Sadness, and Pleasure.

Among Hantengu’s bodies, he stands out as the only one capable of true flight.

He has a large pair of wings and limbs shaped like the talons of a bird of prey, with sharp raptorial claws used for slashing.

His eyes are yellow like a predator’s, and his tongue is marked with the character for “joy,” reinforcing his thematic role.

His bird motif ties closely to his name: “Urogi” is associated with the sky and birds, and his behavior resembles a hunting raptor.

When he snatches Tanjiro Kamado and flies off with him, the scene evokes old folklore about tengu abducting children and spiriting them away into the sky.

Unlike Hantengu’s main body and the other clones, who all refer to themselves using the archaic first-person pronoun equivalent to “I” in an old-man style, Urogi uniquely uses the more casual “ore,” roughly “I” in a rough, masculine register.

Because of this, some fan works mistakenly give him the same pronoun as the other clones, but both the original manga, the anime, and the novelization keep his self-reference consistent.

In the anime, Urogi is voiced by Shunsuke Takeuchi, who is the youngest among the actors playing Hantengu’s emotion clones.

His intense, guttural sound attacks in the show are not purely sound effects; the “screams” are actually performed by Takeuchi himself.

As the embodiment of joy, Urogi is aggressively cheerful in battle and derives pure pleasure from carnage.

He treats fighting like a game and delights in provoking fear, screams, and bloodshed.

He openly revels in the speed and sharpness of his claws, boasting that his talons can shatter even diamond.

This narcissistic confidence makes him loud, taunting, and constantly seeking more “fun” from his opponents.

At the same time, his thrill-seeking nature leads directly into his biggest weakness: overconfidence.

He is easily distracted by his own enjoyment, leaves multiple openings, and tends to underestimate opponents the moment he feels he has the upper hand.

Compared to Karaku, who also enjoys playing around with his victims, Urogi’s joy is more feral and sadistic, emphasizing instinct and rush rather than refined cruelty.

By contrast, Sekido and Aizetsu are far more controlled and calculating, making Urogi the most reckless among the clones.

General Combat Style

Urogi specializes in hit-and-run tactics that take full advantage of his aerial mobility.

He bombards enemies from above, then dives in with sudden, high-speed slashes before retreating into the air again.

His wings grant him superior maneuverability and speed, allowing him to dodge and reposition rapidly.

However, this light, airborne build also means his body mass is relatively low, making him easier to knock back when an opponent meets his charge head-on.

His claws are extremely dangerous weapons that he proudly claims can crush even diamond.

They combine raw cutting power with his high-speed dives, turning each swipe into a potentially lethal strike.

Blood Demon Art: Kyōatsu Meiwa (Mad Pressure Roaring Wave)

Urogi’s signature technique is a devastating sonic shockwave emitted from his mouth.

Though often referred to as an “audio-based attack,” it functions more like a compressed pressure wave or concussive blast than a mere sound.

He projects this roar-shaped wave at high speed, capable of smashing through structures and hurling opponents away.

In the anime, this wave is accompanied by Takeuchi’s raw vocal performance instead of a purely synthetic sound effect.

Interestingly, this type of sonic attack is not exclusive to Urogi.

Zohakuten, who can wield all of the emotion clones’ Blood Demon Arts, also uses it, and Urami is shown using a similar technique.

This overlap has led to the idea that Urogi’s truly unique ability might actually be his flight, while the sonic pressure attack could be a technique accessible to all of Hantengu’s manifestations.

In other words, Urogi’s “specialty” might be flight first, with the shockwave being a shared capability among clones.

Strengths

Urogi’s main strengths are speed, aerial freedom, and multi-directional attack angles.

He can move in three dimensions effortlessly, making him hard to track and counter from the ground.

His claws, enhanced by his speed and physical power, can easily slice through conventional defenses and cause massive damage on impact.

The combination of flying and ranged pressure waves gives him both long-range harassment and close-range burst potential.

His joyful, fearless mindset also makes him highly aggressive.

He does not hesitate, and he constantly presses the attack, overwhelming slower or less experienced fighters.

Weaknesses

Urogi’s greatest weakness is the same thing that makes him distinctive: his obsession with joy and thrill.

He tends to play with his prey, chat during combat, and show off instead of finishing a fight efficiently.

This showboating leads to frequent openings that a sharp opponent can exploit.

Once his rhythm is disrupted and his momentum broken, he finds it much harder to regain control of the battle.

His lightweight body, optimized for speed and flight, has reduced stability under heavy impact.

If an enemy meets his attack with strong forward force or drags him into a direct power struggle, he is more likely to be overpowered.

Battle Against Tanjiro Kamado

Urogi first becomes a major threat during the confrontation between Tanjiro Kamado and the Hantengu clones.

Using his flight, he seizes Tanjiro and carries him into the sky, attacking him midair while reveling in the chaos.

Early in their fight, Urogi dominates with speed and aerial mobility, forcing Tanjiro into a defensive position.

He repeatedly tries to overwhelm Tanjiro with sonic waves and diving claw attacks while mocking him and demanding more “entertaining” reactions.

However, as the fight continues, Urogi’s chronic overconfidence and carelessness begin to cost him.

Tanjiro observes his patterns, times his moves, and gradually seizes the initiative from the airborne demon.

Eventually, Tanjiro uses the Hinokami Kagura technique “Sun Halo Dragon: Head Dance” to target multiple clones.

In this decisive moment, Urogi is the first of the clones to have his neck split open, suffering a severe injury alongside Karaku and Sekido.

Fusion into Zohakuten

After the tide of battle turns, Sekido becomes enraged at the repeated failures and vulnerabilities of the other clones.

In his fury, he absorbs Urogi, Karaku, and Aizetsu into himself.

This fusion gives rise to Zohakuten, a new form capable of using all of their Blood Demon Arts together.

Urogi effectively ceases to exist as an independent entity at this point, his abilities and “joy” subsumed into Zohakuten’s composite power.

Urogi’s design strongly ties into avian and sky imagery.

His wings, claws, and predatory eyes all mirror a bird of prey that enjoys the hunt.

The way he grabs Tanjiro and flies off can be seen as a nod to old stories about demonic beings abducting humans and roaming the skies with them.

This visual storytelling reinforces his role as a wild, ecstatic hunter who finds delight in toying with his victims from above.

The split between his rough first-person speech and the archaic style used by Hantengu and the other clones also emphasizes his uniqueness.

While the others feel more bound to Hantengu’s original, aged personality, Urogi gives off a younger, more modern, and more impulsive vibe.

His defining emotional theme, “joy,” is reflected not only in his name and tongue marking but in the way he experiences combat as pure entertainment.

He is not just brutal—he is exuberantly brutal, which makes him both memorable and dangerous.

In the anime adaptation, when Urogi’s neck is slashed and he falls to the ground, there is a brief shot where he curls up in a compact, rounded pose.

This curled-up position has been noted by some viewers as unexpectedly cute, gaining him a small fan following for that moment alone.

Shunsuke Takeuchi’s performance as Urogi stands out not only for the character’s manic energy but also because he personally performs the roaring sound waves instead of relying solely on sound effects.

Among the voice actors portraying Hantengu’s emotion clones, Takeuchi is the youngest, which fits Urogi’s comparatively youthful, wild energy.
