Banehige is a male professional hero in the world of One-Punch Man, ranked A-Class 33rd and later promoted to 28th, known for his springy Kaiser mustache, gentlemanly demeanor, and devastating long-range thrust technique using a modified rapier.
Banehige is an A-Class hero (initially rank 33, later rank 28) who appears only in the manga version illustrated by Yusuke Murata.
He is a middle-aged man, 47 years old, with a distinctive spring-shaped Kaiser mustache and usually wears a tuxedo.
He comes from a prestigious family but rejected a conventional “on-rails” life.
Instead of pursuing a career at an elite corporation, he chose the riskier path of becoming a hero.
In addition to hero work, he runs a coffee shop, both as a source of income and as a hobby.
His demeanor is polite and refined, and he behaves like a classic gentleman.
Banehige is a former master swordsman and a disciple of Nichirin, one of the top members of the swordmaster group known as the Sword Saint School.
He is regarded as a genius swordsman even by Nichirin himself.
He is on friendly terms with A-Class hero Ougon Ball (Golden Ball), who holds rank 29 in A-Class.
The two often act together on missions.
According to a routine Disaster Cause Survey by the Hero Association, Banehige is responsible for patrolling and investigating Z-City.
His hero ranking is lower than his true combat ability because his strongest techniques are too dangerous to use in populated areas.
Banehige’s upbringing in a noble household gave him refined manners and a sense of dignity.
Despite this, he disliked the idea of a predetermined elite career and chose a more self-directed, unconventional life as a hero.
He is calm, courteous, and speaks and behaves like a well-bred gentleman.
Running a coffee shop reflects his taste and personal interests, giving him a relaxed, cultured image alongside his role as a fighter.
He respects his teacher Nichirin deeply and follows the ways of the Sword Saint School.
At the same time, he remains modest about his own talent, even though others frequently praise his genius.
Banehige is a swordsman of a branch style within the Sword Saint School, directly under Nichirin’s line.
His swordsmanship talent is so outstanding that Nichirin himself calls him a genius.
He fights using a special rapier or saber-like weapon that he produces in a way reminiscent of a magic trick.
His stance and movements resemble fencing, focusing on precision, speed, and thrusting attacks rather than heavy slashes.
His best-known special move is “Tomboy” (踏無暴威), a pun-based name for a technique where he compresses the sword blade like a spring.
He then releases the compressed blade in an extremely powerful and fast thrust with extraordinary range and piercing power.
From the placement of utility poles in the scene where Tomboy is used, the effective range is estimated to be at least 200 meters.
Everything along the line of fire—such as poles and mailboxes—ends up with clean, punched-through holes, demonstrating remarkable penetration.
The projectile-like thrust is so powerful that it risks harming anything behind the intended target.
Because of this, using Tomboy in a city or densely populated area is extremely risky and usually not an option.
For this reason, Banehige’s full power is hard to demonstrate during normal hero work in human settlements.
Nichirin explains that this limitation is precisely why Banehige remains in the lower ranks of A-Class despite his skill.
During the Monster Association raid, Banehige unveils a multi-shot version of his technique called “Tomboowee” (踏無暴雨威).
This is essentially a rapid-fire barrage of Tomboy thrusts, making lethal use of the high penetration to wipe out numerous clones of Black Sperm.
Even though the exact mechanics are unclear, the fired blade segments or extended blade reliably return to him after being launched.
In the anime adaptation, the depiction leans more toward the blade itself extending rather than being detached and shot.
His ability to repeatedly launch these ultra-long-range thrusts allows him to threaten enemies at distances where most swordsmen are powerless.
Under the right conditions—namely, in open areas with no civilians—he has shown the potential to fight against Dragon-level threats.
Due to his status as Nichirin’s top disciple among the Sword Saint members, Banehige is considered to be at least close in strength to Iaian and other prominent sword-wielding heroes.
Iaian himself, despite being higher-ranked in the Hero Association, treats Banehige with clear respect.
Garou also acknowledges that Banehige’s style is extremely dangerous in the right environment.
He notes that Banehige is simply ill-suited for urban battlefields, which is why his achievements seem limited.
Banehige’s official ranking is in the lower half of A-Class, starting at 33rd and later moving up to 28th.
However, several characters state that this rank underestimates his true prowess.
Nichirin points out that Banehige’s Tomboy has such extreme penetration that it cannot be used freely in populated areas, restricting his combat options during typical hero missions.
This environmental incompatibility means his performance metrics and public recognition lag far behind his actual strength.
Garou, after fighting him, comments that Banehige’s style would be far more effective in a different setting.
This implies that under battlefield conditions with no civilians and plenty of open space, Banehige could fight on par with much more highly ranked heroes.
His partnership with Ougon Ball also helps highlight that he is not just a “gimmick” fighter.
Within their duo, both heroes’ abilities are acknowledged by the Association, and they complement each other at mid-to-long range.
Overall, Banehige is one of the clearest examples in the series of a hero whose ranking and reputation do not fully reflect his true combat capabilities.
This gap becomes obvious during the Monster Association arc, where his performance is much more impressive than his usual A-Class rank would suggest.
Z-City Investigation and Kombu Infinity
Banehige first appears when he and Ougon Ball are dispatched as an investigation team.
They are sent to the outskirts of Z-City, which has turned into a ghost town due to frequent monster appearances and rumors of a “monster” living there.
During their patrol, they encounter Kombu Infinity, a monster unrelated to the rumored “monster” of the area.
Ougon Ball is quickly overwhelmed, but Banehige stands his ground and deflects all of Kombu Infinity’s attacks with composed swordplay.
He then attempts to finish the fight with Tomboy, launching his signature long-range thrust.
Kombu Infinity, however, reads the attack and avoids the finishing blow, turning the battle into a war of attrition.
Banehige eventually collapses from exhaustion after this drawn-out fight.
Fortunately, he had already called for backup, and other heroes arrive in time to rescue both him and Ougon Ball, preserving their lives.
After their defeat, the true “monster” of the area—Saitama, actually just a human hero—casually kills Kombu Infinity before the other heroes can engage it.
This outcome makes Banehige’s initial performance look weaker in hindsight, though later material suggests Kombu Infinity might have been misclassified and stronger than its “Tiger” threat rating suggests.
Encounter with Garou
Banehige next appears when Garou begins targeting heroes and sets his sights on Ougon Ball.
Banehige rushes in to protect his friend, engaging Garou with swift, precise sword slashes.
His flurry of attacks is sharp enough to impress even Garou, forcing the martial artist to respect his technique.
Banehige pushes Garou into the air with his continuous offense and then fires Tomboy at him midair.
Garou manages to protect himself by sacrificing his left hand and uses the opportunity to close the distance.
Once he gets in close, he punches Banehige away, knocking him unconscious in a single blow.
From Garou’s dialogue, it is implied that he had already analyzed and anticipated the use of Tomboy in that situation.
Even so, Garou says that if the battlefield had been different, Banehige would have been a much more dangerous opponent, acknowledging the mismatch between his style and typical city environments.
Monster Association Raid and Sword Saint Disciples
During the assault on the Monster Association, Banehige joins the battle as one of the sword disciples.
He fights alongside Nichirin and other swordsmen against Black Sperm and additional monsters.
In this chaos, Banehige uses his multi-shot technique Tomboowee.
The extremely high penetration of the repeated thrusts proves ideal for piercing and destroying many of Black Sperm’s split bodies in quick succession.
Despite their fierce offense, the swordsmen face a terrible enemy in Ugly President, a grotesque monster who is especially dangerous to close-range fighters.
During this phase, Zanbai and Amahare are killed, and Nichirin receives a fatal injury while shielding Banehige.
As he lies dying, Nichirin tells Banehige that he has grown into a fine swordsman.
In his final moments, Nichirin grants Banehige full mastery, effectively giving him the equivalent of a full-license transmission of their sword style.
Defense Against Homeless Emperor’s Attack
Later in the same arc, Banehige is involved in a high-stakes confrontation with Homeless Emperor.
Homeless Emperor unleashes an overwhelming “ultra dense carpet bombing” of light projectiles.
At that time, Atomic Samurai intends to draw the secret sword “Nichirin,” a blade that responds to the mind, to counter the threat.
To buy him the time and protection needed to do so, Banehige and A-Class Rank 2 hero Iaian work together.
Banehige and Iaian stand in front and cut down a huge number of incoming light bullets with their swords.
This coordinated defense against such a deadly barrage showcases Banehige’s speed, precision, and stamina under extreme pressure.
Following these events, Banehige is shown alive, holding Nichirin’s heavily damaged body.
Nichirin also survives, though most of his body has to be reconstructed as a mechanical prosthetic.
Nichirin calls Banehige a genius and indicates that his student’s potential is very high.
Black Sperm’s clones and Homeless Emperor’s light projectiles both serve as practical demonstrations of how lethal Banehige can be when allowed to fight without concern for collateral damage.
Even though Iaian outranks him in the Hero Association, Iaian clearly respects Banehige.
This hints that Banehige’s actual swordsmanship might surpass Iaian’s, especially in specialized scenarios.
Garou’s commentary aligns with this idea: Banehige is dangerous but shackled by his technique’s incompatibility with cityscapes.
If he could fight in open fields, wastelands, or uninhabited areas, his Tomboy and Tomboowee techniques would be much more freely usable.
In the Monster Association battle, Banehige contributes meaningfully against enemies classified around Dragon level.
This further reinforces that under the right conditions, his strength can reach or at least approach the realm of top-tier A-Class and even some S-Class combatants.
Banehige appears only in the Murata-drawn One-Punch Man manga published on platforms such as Tonari no Young Jump.
He does not exist in the original webcomic version of the story.
At his debut, his loss to Kombu Infinity and the monster’s later classification as “Tiger level” made Banehige seem relatively weak.
However, later battles show that he can stand up to far more dangerous foes, making it likely that Kombu Infinity’s rating was too low rather than Banehige being genuinely weak.
His coffee shop, refined manners, and exaggerated Kaiser mustache combine to give him a unique flavor among the heroes.
He stands out as a cultured gentleman whose deadliest weapon is not brute force, but a precise and terrifyingly powerful long-distance thrust.
