Asa is the founder and secret puppeteer of the Yozakura Family, a genius doctor who became the story’s ultimate villain after his wish to save many lives twisted into dark experiments. Driven by a belief that the world’s suffering justifies any means, he hides his existence, endlessly manipulating and sacrificing his own family for a greater cause. Asa’s actions set the generations-long conflict between the Yozakura Family and Dandelion, making him the true mastermind and last enemy in Mission: Yozakura Family.
Asa is never described in great detail, but elements like his age (having lived for over 300 years with a youthful appearance thanks to immortality) and his presence as a fatherly figure are repeated. He is said to have an aura of authority and intelligence.
Asa is someone whose original wish was to help people and end suffering. However, as he gained power and tasted success, he began valuing his goal above all else.
He sacrificed the happiness and lives of his family, saying it was for the good of many.
Asa became cold and ruthless. He saw making his family suffer as a necessary sacrifice.
He believes that putting the needs of the many above the few is always right.
To him, his descendants choosing happiness over saving others is selfish and wrong.
Asa became blind to his own cruelty and obsessed with his "righteous" mission.
From Doctor to Monster
About 300 years ago, during the mid-Edo period, Asa was a doctor studying Western medicine.
He saw people endlessly dying from diseases and starvation.
When his wife died giving birth to their daughter, Tsubomi Yozakura, he was devastated.
Tsubomi was born with a miraculous healing power. Asa believed studying her abilities could help save countless others.
The Path Into Darkness
He began experimenting on Tsubomi, even performing surgery on her without anesthesia.
Asa treated his daughter and her descendants as test subjects.
Even as Tsubomi suffered, she tried to believe in her father's wish to help others.
Many people were saved because of Asa’s research, but nobody knew the true cost.
Asa and Tsubomi were honored by the emperor and given the Yozakura name— As’s "success story."
The Family’s Fate
The Yozakura Family, with their unique powers, was built to provide him with research subjects.
He erased all evidence of his existence and secretly controlled the family for generations.
Asa himself became immortal by using Tsubomi’s powers.
He continued his experiments and made sure that the family members shut out their feelings and personal desires for “the greater good.”
Anyone who tried to resist was often eliminated, and records of them erased.
Asa is the origin of the family’s powers.
He can use multiple "blooming" (Kaika) abilities, which are superpowers passed down the family.
- Stasis: Stops all physical movement within a range.
- Shell (tentative name): Makes shell-like restraints to immobilize targets.
- Embrace: Learned by Futaba Yozakura. Uses precise moves to neutralize attacks and can even attack.
- Hardening: Learned by Taiyo Asano. Hardens the body to reduce damage, allowing offensive and defensive moves.
- Pierce: Learned by a former Yozakura. Fires sharp spikes from altered bones.
- Sever: Learned by a former Yozakura. Slices the enemy by splitting their flesh into different matter.
- Nothingness: Learned by Kyoichiro Yozakura. Turns targeted things into nothing.
- Division: Learned by Tsubomi Yozakura. Allows user to split their heart (soul) and transplant it into others, creating a link. This grants functional immortality, as long as one heart survives.
Asa used this on his clones and Momo Yozakura, using them as replacements for himself.
- Conquest: Asa's ultimate move, which he can use only once. Allows his own soul to fully take over another’s body.
- Tsubomi Yozakura: Asa’s daughter and his original test subject. She has a unique healing ability and is the ancestor of the Yozakura Family.
- Momo Yozakura: A "clone" created from Tsubomi’s cells. Served as Asa’s agent until defecting.
- The Clones (The Asa Family):
- Kaz (First Son): Cold and professional, always follows Asa’s orders but cares for his siblings.
- Nii (First Daughter): Fox-eared, sensible, hates hurting children, wavers in following Asa's orders.
- Mitsu (Second Son): Youngest boy, confident, loves faith, gets into fights with Kaz.
- Yoh (Second Daughter): Very young, pure-hearted, adores her family, possesses the "brainwave" "wither" power.
Asa’s Secret Rule
Asa, the true ancestor of the Yozakura Family, secretly controlled the household for centuries.
He erased all records of himself and sent spies and enforcers, like Kawashita Makoto and Momo Yozakura, to keep the family in line.
The Tragedy of Tsubomi
His daughter, Tsubomi, was born with immense healing powers.
Believing her power could save the world, Asa experimented on her mercilessly.
He ignored her pain, believing sacrifices for the greater good were not only justified but required.
Building the "Perfect" Family
He used Tsubomi’s abilities to make himself and his descendants immortal.
The family became a source of endless research material, always under Asa’s shadow, with anyone trying to protect their own happiness considered “selfish” and eliminated.
The Rise of the True Villain
As time passed, the Yozakura Family started to resist.
Rei Yozakura, the ninth head of the family, sensed Asa’s true nature and rebelled.
With Rei’s help, Momo also turned against Asa.
Asa’s Response and the Clones
To counter this, Asa used a brainwashing program on Momo.
When Rei gave Momo the “Blood of the Yozakura,” it created a rampage that broke Asa’s control.
Asa created clone "children" (Kaz, Nii, Mitsu, Yoh) using Tsubomi’s limbs and Rei’s heart, calling them his "hands and feet".
Manipulation Across Generations
He continued to manipulate the family from the shadows, sending new agents and even infiltrating the Spy Association.
He recruited powerful villains and allies, using the promise of immortal medical arts.
He was willing to sacrifice countless lives for his experiments, believing they could be revived once his research succeeded.
He planned to eliminate the first twins in family history, Hifumi and Alpha Yozakura.
Repeated Resistance
Past family leaders attempted to resist Asa’s control, but most failed.
There were times when they almost succeeded, like during the family’s independence in the Meiji era, but Asa always found a way to regain control— even using war as a cover for his tactics.
- The kanji for “Asa” means dawn, or the sun rising above the horizon.
- The main character’s name, Taiyo Asano, also means “sunrise,” making them symbolic opposites.
- In the story, they are called "two suns."
- Asa is considered the perfect final villain for a story about a family fighting for each other against someone who would sacrifice anyone for his idea of the greater good.
- "If they wish for their own happiness instead of helping others, then as the parent of the Yozakura Family, I must scold them and have them become sacrifices for the world. That is true happiness for the Yozakura."
- "My wish was always to save others. That’s why I will never stop."
- Asa appears only in shadows for much of the story, being the mastermind behind the scenes.
- He is connected to many of the family’s tragedies, even arranging the deaths of dangerous people who might threaten his power.
- Even Goliath, the mysterious white dog, is implied to be tied to Asa in unknown ways.
