Character Setting

Edit

Grice is a male Eldian character in the manga and anime series Attack on Titan, a senior member of the Eldian Restorationists and the man who recruits Grisha Yeager into the anti‑Marley movement.

He later becomes known as the uncle of Colt Grice and Falco Grice and is executed by being sent to “Paradise” as part of Marley’s punishment for rebels.

Grice is an Eldian living inside a Marleyan internment zone.

He operates as a high‑ranking member of the underground anti‑government organization known as the Eldian Restorationists.

Within the organization, he is one of the few members whose name is revealed, alongside Grisha Yeager and Dina Fritz.

He is characterized by his passionate hatred of Marley and his determination to restore Eldia.

Grice first appears in Grisha Yeager’s flashbacks.

Through his actions, he becomes the catalyst that pushes Grisha into rebellion against Marley.

First Contact with Grisha Yeager

When Grisha Yeager is 18 and has inherited his father’s medical clinic, Grice visits him while posing as an ordinary patient.

Once alone, he reveals a cross‑shaped scar on his body, a sign used among Eldian Restorationists to mark themselves as “comrades.”

Grice then reveals the truth about the death of Grisha’s younger sister, Fay Yeager.

He explains that she was not accidentally lost or killed by chance, but murdered by a Marleyan authority figure after Grisha and Fay illegally left the internment zone.

Using this truth as leverage, Grice offers to share more detailed information on the condition that Grisha cooperates with the Eldian Restorationists.

He invites Grisha to lend his strength to the group, promising the chance to strike back at Marley and fight for Eldia’s revival.

Rise of the Eldian Restorationists

After this encounter, Grisha joins the Eldian Restorationists and quickly rises to a leadership role.

Grice works closely with him as the group gathers information, spreads anti‑Marley ideology, and plans to one day reclaim Eldian freedom.

Grisha eventually marries Dina Fritz, a woman of royal blood descended from the ancient Fritz family, and they have a son, Zeke Yeager.

The Restorationists place enormous hope on Zeke, expecting him to become a Marleyan Warrior and act as their spy and weapon from within Marley’s own military program.

However, their plan fails when Zeke, overwhelmed by pressure and manipulation from his Marleyan mentor Tom Ksaver and the state system, secretly reports his parents and the Restorationists to the Marleyan authorities.

This betrayal leads to the capture of Grice, Grisha, Dina, and the other members of the movement.

Capture and Transport

Following Zeke Yeager’s report, Marley arrests the Eldian Restorationists.

Grice is taken with the others to a remote coastal area on the island of Paradis, where Eldian criminals are transformed into mindless Titans as punishment.

This process, known as being “sent to paradise,” is in reality a death sentence.

On the day of their execution, the captured Eldians are lined up atop a high wall overlooking the shore.

Confrontation with Grisha Yeager

On the wall, Grice and Grisha Yeager are reunited in chains.

Consumed by rage and despair, Grice harshly condemns Grisha for the way he raised Zeke.

He calls Grisha a selfish, incompetent father who pushed his dreams onto his son and turned him into a child who would sell out his parents.

Grice declares that entrusting everything to Grisha was a mistake and vents all his resentment and regret in their final moments together.

Death on Paradis Island

The commotion draws the attention of Gross, a sadistic Marleyan officer overseeing the executions.

Amused by Grice’s outburst, Gross decides to use him as live bait.

Instead of being immediately injected with Titan spinal fluid and pushed off the wall, Grice is kicked down while still in human form.

Gross taunts him by saying that if he is lucky, he might make it all the way to the innermost wall and survive.

Grice hits the ground and starts running north, desperately trying to escape.

However, he is soon spotted by his former comrades, who have already been transformed into Titans and released along the shore.

Although his exact final moments are not depicted, it is strongly implied that Grice is chased down and devoured by the Titans who were once his fellow Restorationists.

By the current point in the story, the possibility of his survival is considered virtually zero.

Connection to Colt and Falco Grice

In the Marley‑focused arc, it is revealed that Grice is the uncle of Colt Grice and Falco Grice, making him their paternal relative.

This also confirms that “Grice” is a family name (surname) rather than a given name.

Because of Grice’s involvement with the Eldian Restorationists, his entire family comes under suspicion of anti‑Marley activity.

To prove their loyalty and clear the family name, both Colt and Falco volunteer to become Warriors, a special unit of Eldian soldiers who inherit the powers of the Nine Titans and fight for Marley.

Colt succeeds in gaining the succession rights to the Beast Titan, a position of prestige within the Warrior program.

As a result, the Grice family is elevated to the status of “Honorary Marleyans,” gaining legal protections and social privileges that finally secure their safety and stability.

Grice’s Influence on the Narrative

Grice’s decision to recruit Grisha Yeager sets off a chain of events that ultimately shapes the entire world of Attack on Titan.

Without his intervention, Grisha might have remained an obedient citizen, and key plot events—including Grisha inheriting the Attack Titan and later passing it to Eren Yeager—might never have occurred.

His fate also illustrates the cruelty of Marley’s system and the tragic costs borne by Eldians who resist it.

Through his family, particularly Colt and Falco, Grice’s legacy continues to echo in later arcs, linking the early Restorationist movement to the next generation of Eldians fighting for their own future.

“We will tell you the details if you cooperate with us.

If you lend your strength to us, the Eldian Restorationists.”

This line encapsulates Grice’s role as recruiter and agitator, offering painful truth and a path of resistance in exchange for commitment to the cause.
